Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metal (Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn, Hg, Fe, Co, Cr, Mo) contents were established in soil and plant samples collected in different areas of the railway junction I?awa G?ówna, Poland. Soil and plant samples were collected in four functional parts of the junction, i.e. the loading ramp, main track within platform area, rolling stock cleaning bay and the railway siding. It was found that all the investigated areas were strongly contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The PAH contamination of the soil was the highest in the railway siding and in the platform area (59,508 and 49,670?μg?kg(-1), respectively). In the loading ramp and cleaning bay, the PAH concentration in soil was lower but still relatively very high (17,948 and 15,376?μg?kg(-1), respectively). The contamination in the railway siding exceeded the average control level up to about 80 times. In the soil of all the investigated areas, four- and five-ring PAHs prevailed. The concentrations of PAHs were determined in four dominating species of plants found at the junction. The highest concentration was found in the aerial parts of Taraxacum officinale (22,492?μg?kg(-1)) growing in the cleaning bay. The comparison of the soil contamination with PAHs in the investigated railway junction showed a very significant increase of the PAHs level since 1995. It was found that the heavy metal contamination was also very high. Pb, Zn, Hg and Cd were established at the highest levels in the railway siding area, whereas Fe concentration was the highest in the platform area. A significant increase in mercury content was observed in the cleaning bay area. The investigations proved very significant increase of contamination with PAHs and similar heavy metals contamination in comparison with the concentration determined in the same areas 13?years ago.  相似文献

The research was carried out in the spruce forests of Barania Góra (Silesian Beskids, Poland) affected by pandemic dying of trees. Twenty-seven samples were collected from the O layer in two plots: 17 in a cut down forest infested with insect pests (bark beetle) and ten in a 120-year-old healthy forest. The analyses covered basic parameters (pH(H2O), pH(KCl), w(org), C(tot), N(tot), CEC) and the concentrations of aluminium in the fractions leached with 0.1?M BaCl(2) (Al(exch)), 0.5?M CuCl(2) and 0.1?M Na(4)P(2)O(7) (Al(bio)) solutions. The total aluminium concentration in the soil was assayed digesting samples with hydrofluoric acid. The effect of pH and organic matter content on the amount of exchangeable (Al(exch)) and bioavailable (Al(exch)) aluminium in the soil was analysed. It has been found that the soils in both plots are strongly acidic and contain 550 to 1,700?mg?kg(-1) of exchangeable aluminium and 1,200 to 4,800?mg?kg(-1) of bioavailable aluminium. The lack of disease symptoms in the spruce trees in plot 2 can be explained by the higher content of organic matter in the soil. Unfortunately, one might expect that the high concentration of exchangeable aluminium will also cause the trees in the area to wither.  相似文献

This paper focuses on the influence of uranium tailing piles on the contamination of their immediate surroundings. The monitoring was carried out on arable land near Pribram in Central Bohemia, Czech Republic. The monitored arable land is located 600 m northeast of the bottom of the piles. In addition, the high uranium (U) content in the topsoil ranged from 40 to 220 ppm. A former portion of it was found in an exchangeable fraction (49%). Both of these facts make this land unsuitable for agricultural use. The sequential extraction discovered a shift in the U content among sample spots situated in and outside the path of the predominant wind direction. In the first group, uranium binds mainly to Fe/Mn oxides, while in the other samples, U is accumulated in the more mobilizable fractions.  相似文献

The sequential elution technique (SET) is used to determine the distribution of elements in the different cell fractions of mosses. The extracellular extractants most commonly used in this technique are NiCl2 and EDTA, although there are certain disadvantages associated with their use. In order to avoid such problems, we searched for new extractants that displace extracellularly bound metals, either because they are present at high concentrations (Ca) or because they have a high affinity for cation exchange sites (Hg and Au). The compounds HCl, NaCl, and CaCl2 were tested as extractants of the former type, as possible alternatives for the determination of extracellular metals in the moss Pseudoscleropodium purum. Calcium chloride was finally chosen as is it potentially the most successful in terms of binding to the cation exchange sites without altering the membrane permeability. The concentration chosen was 160 mM, as this yielded maximum displacement of Zn without membrane alterations. An experiment was then carried out to test the efficiency of Ca in extracting extracellular Zn, under laboratory and field conditions. In addition, Hg and Au were tested, at different concentrations, as extractants with high affinity for cation exchange sites, as neither of these elements has previously been used in the SET, and both display electronic characteristics that suggest their potential usefulness in displacing other cations from cation exchange sites. The results obtained show that extraction of extracellularly bound metal by high concentrations of Ca should be ruled out, as total extraction of Zn was not achieved. Both Hg and Au produced membrane alterations at low concentrations and moreover, neither was more efficient at extracting Zn than the reference extractant (20 mM NiCl2).  相似文献

The aim of this work was to determine the optimum values for the biodegradation process of six abiotic factors considered very influential in this process. The optimisation of a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (naphthalene, phenanthrene and anthracene) biodegradation process was carried out with a degrading bacterial consortium C2PL05. The optimised factors were the molar ratio of carbon/nitrogen/phosphorus (C/N/P), the nitrogen source, the iron source, the iron concentration, the pH and the carbon source. Each factor was optimised applying three different treatments during 168 h, analysing cell density by spectrophotometric absorbance at 600 nm and PAH depletion by HPLC. To determine the optimum values of the factors, an analysis of variance was performed using the cell density increments and biotic degradation constants, calculated for each treatment. The most effective values of each factor were: a C/N/P molar ratio of 100:21:16, NaNO3 as nitrogen source, Fe2(SO4)3 as iron source using a concentration of 0.1 mmol l?1, a pH of 7.0 and a mixture of glucose and PAHs as carbon source. Therefore, high concentrations of nutrients and soluble forms of nitrogen and iron at neutral pH favour the biodegradation. Also, the addition of glucose to PAHs as carbon source increased the number of total microorganism and enhanced PAH biodegradation due to the augmentation of PAH degrader microorganisms. It is also important to underline that the statistical treatment of data and the combined study of the increments of the cell density and the biotic biodegradation constant have facilitated the accurate interpretation of the optimisation results. For an optimum bioremediation process, it is very important to perform these previous bioassays to decrease the process development time and, therefore, the costs.  相似文献

Instrumented column tests are often used to assess the effectiveness of methods to prevent acid mine drainage (AMD). These tests are seldom duplicated, and this lack of duplicate can cast some doubt about their repeatability and reliability. This paper provides an analysis of column test studies (with duplicates) performed with a commonly used methodology. The paper presents the analysis of two multi-layer covers with capillary barrier effects in which the water retention layer was made of a non-plastic silt and of two cover scenarios involving a single-layer low sulphide cover. The first study compared the cover performance to limit AMD when different cover materials are used, while the second study compared the thickness of covers on cover performance. Statistical comparison between duplicates was made using available geochemical data, hydro-geotechnical data, and gas concentrations. Student??s t-test statistical tools and analysis of variances were used to determine the repeatability of the data. The results indicate that a good reproducibility of the column tests can be achieved with a good set-up methodology and rigorous control of the boundary conditions.  相似文献

Medicines and their metabolites have been found as water contaminants at very low concentrations; moreover, there is no extensive toxicological data to determine the risks associated with their occurrence in water resources. The ibuprofen genotoxicity potential to the Oreochromis niloticus fish (Tilapia), due to nanograms per liter exposure, was evaluated using the micronucleus test. Acute (48 h) and sub-chronic assays (10 days) were carried out at 300 ng/L ibuprofen aquatic concentration comparing with the negative control group (without treatment), with eight animals per group. The results were assessed from the average of triplicate analyses. The micronucleus frequency in peripheral blood of fish was determined using a sample size of 3,000 erythrocytes per animal. Significance was defined using t test (p????0.05). The bioassay results showed a statistically significant increase in the frequency of micronuclei for both exposure times in comparison to the negative control. The micronucleus frequency observed for the sub-chronic tests was higher than the one identified in the acute assays. The observed ibuprofen genotoxic effects demonstrated an aquatic environmental risk of this pharmaceutical, which occurs for the used fish experimental model in lower concentration than previously described for other aquatic organisms.  相似文献

Brown algae Sargassum sinicola and Sargassum lapazeanum were tested as cadmium biosorbents in coastal environments close to natural and enriched areas of phosphorite ore. Differences in the concentration of cadmium in these brown algae were found, reflecting the bioavailability of the metal ion in seawater at several sites. In the laboratory, maximum biosorption capacity (q max) of cadmium by these nonliving algae was determined according to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm as 62.42?±?0.44 mg g?1 with the affinity constant (b) of 0.09 and 71.20?±?0.80 with b of 0.03 for S. sinicola and S. lapazeanum, respectively. Alginate yield was 19.16?±?1.52% and 12.7?±?1.31%, respectively. Although S. sinicola had far lower biosorption capacity than S. lapazeanum, the affinity for cadmium for S. sinicola makes this alga more suitable as a biosorbent because of its high q max and large biomass on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula. Sargassum biomass was estimated at 180,000 t, with S. sinicola contributing to over 70%.  相似文献

Urban and industrial activities are major sources of pollution to marine environments. Sediments can act as sink and reservoir for a wide range of contaminants, including heavy metals. Environmental quality assessment in this compartment can provide useful information to control pollution in coastal areas. Lately, implementation of Environmental Legislative Frameworks within the European Community is increasing awareness about the importance of marine sediment quality in order to achieve a ??Good Environmental Status.?? In this work, the study of superficial marine sediments allowed assessment of source and fate of heavy metals in a semi-enclosed deep embayment that is subjected to severe anthropogenic activities. Results indicated that accumulation of heavy metals takes place mainly in proximity to anthropogenic sources (industrial area and harbors), but pollution can also spread to greater depths affecting the whole ecosystem. Multivariate statistics helped identify source and fate of several elements, showing evidence of pollutants transfer from urban wastewaters, industrial effluents, and atmospheric emissions to marine sediments. Results provided useful information for the implementation and development of Environmental Management Strategies under European Legislative Frameworks.  相似文献

After over 10 years of accumulation of residues in the studied dumps near Madrid, it has been registered low or moderate heavy metals concentrations on the surrounding area. Only occasionally, some rubbish dumps contain significant quantities of Cu, Ni, Zn and Pb. The concentration levels of Pb, Ni, Zn and Cu are safe when they are compared with the surrounding areas levels of heavy metals. The aim of this paper is the analysis of pollutants existing around in the dumps located at the sides of the plateaus of the central valley of the Tajo River (provinces of Madrid and Toledo, Spain). The high karstification rate of the upper layer of these tablelands and the existence of numerous dumps on them (even on their slopes) make these areas vulnerable to heavy metal pollution. However, after several years of use, the concentration of pollutants only reaches moderate values in the studied areas. Dumping materials were collected at four rubbish dumps. The mineralogical composition of the materials were analysed by XRD. Sequential extraction procedure was applied for speciation of the metal forms in the collected samples. Concentrations of Zn, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cr and Cd in extracts were determined by AAS. The studied samples showed high carbonate concentration. Contamination processes are combined there with weathering processes. Heavy metals concentration in control samples (gypsum, limestones, red soils and colluviums) were compared with samples of the studied dump in order to evaluate the pollution level. Concentrations of Zn, Pb, Ni and Cu were variable. The contamination was elevated for samples in depth in relation with weathering process of heavy metals.  相似文献
