The effect of washing frequency on the physiological responses and performance of buffalo calves was studied in hot summer. Thirty Nili-Ravi calves aged 4–6 months were divided into three uniform groups of ten. The calves of group A, B and C were washed two (9 a.m. and 3 p.m.), three (8 a.m., 12 noon and 4 p.m.) and four (8 a.m., 11 a.m., 2 p.m. and 5 p.m.) times in a day, respectively. They were washed with water for 5 min at a stretch. The mean linear body measurements, body weight, dry matter intake through concentrate, green fodder and physiological responses, i.e. rectal temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate before and after washing under different daily washing frequency were recorded fortnightly. The average daily gain was also calculated. The mean total dry matter intake was increased with the increase frequency of washing. The maximum mean daily body weight gain was recorded in group C followed by group B and A. There were statistically significant (P < 0.05) differences between the three washing groups. Calves were more comfortable with increase number of washing in a day in hot summer. The rectal temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate also varied significantly (P < 0.05) between the three experiment groups. It can be concluded that daily four times washing in hot summer had more beneficial effects over three and two times washing of young Nili-Ravi buffalo calves to decrease rectal temperature, pulse rate and respiration rate and to increase average feed utilization and daily gain under tropical climate.  相似文献

Temperature pervasively affects all cellular processes. In response to a rapid increase in temperature, all cells undergo a heat shock response, an ancient and highly conserved program of stress-inducible gene expression, to reestablish cellular homeostasis. In isolated cells, the heat shock response is initiated by the presence of misfolded proteins and therefore thought to be cell-autonomous. In contrast, we show that within the metazoan Caenorhabditis elegans, the heat shock response of somatic cells is not cell-autonomous but rather depends on the thermosensory neuron, AFD, which senses ambient temperature and regulates temperature-dependent behavior. We propose a model whereby this loss of cell autonomy serves to integrate behavioral, metabolic, and stress-related responses to establish an organismal response to environmental change.  相似文献

The X-ray in the field of medical imaging is an important diagnostic tool, but it has been identified that there are potential radiation risks associated with the X-ray radiation scans. These risks have traditionally been guarded against using lead based shields. Lead has excellent radiation shielding properties, but it is also heavy and a potential health and environmental hazard due to its toxicity. Thus, there have been studies seeking to find an alternative that is as effective and yet counters the other drawbacks. In this paper, preliminary studies were conducted to assess the shielding effect of barium sulphate (BaSO4) and bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) on the coated fabric samples. X-ray transmission resulting from standard lead coated samples, uncoated fabric, BaSO4, and BaSO4/Bi2O3 coated fabrics was evaluated via measuring the penetration of primary radiation. Different properties such as mass per unit area, material thickness, and surface morphology were examined. All samples were irradiated by X-ray at 80 kVp to measure the amount of transmissions. The X-ray transmission level associated with BaSO4 ranged from 84.5 % to 70.5 %. However, this level was elevated to 55.6 % when BaSO4/Bi2O3 mixture was applied on the fabric. The theoretical attenuation coefficient values associated with different coating mixtures comprising different weight proportions of BaSO4, Bi2O3, and PVC were determined between 0 MeV and 105 MeV using XCOM code. The XCOM results implied that the X-ray attenuation coefficient among all prepared coatings should be the mixture comprising 13.3 wt% Bi2O3/20 wt% BaSO4/66.7 wt% PVC, which was in agreement with the experimental results obtained from X-ray transmission measurements.  相似文献

The effects of conventional lime sulfide depilation and enzymatic depilation on the enamel layer of pickled lamb pelts were examined using atomic force and optical microscopy, immunohistological, and proteomic techniques. Microscopy showed that the surface structure of enzymatically depilated material was visibly less organized than conventionally processed material, implying that the enzymes used for depilation were responsible for this difference. Proteomic analyses identified an absence of collagen VI in the enamel of skins that had been processed with enzymes, in contrast to the skins that had been processed using conventional methods, which was confirmed using immunolocalization studies. It is therefore possible that the destruction of collagen VI during enzymatic depilation may cause the changes to the enamel structure observed during enzyme processing and in turn affect the quality of the finished product.  相似文献
