Method to measure the optical properties of small volumes of diffusive media

The method consists of measuring the perturbation provoked by a small volume of the diffusive medium on light propagating through a medium of known optical properties. The absorption and the reduced scattering coefficients of the medium are retrieved from multidistance continuous-wave measurements of transmittance. The inversion procedure is based on the solution of the diffusion equation obtained with a perturbative approach. The method has been validated with Monte Carlo results. Examples of experimental results are reported.     

eWALL: An Open-Source Cloud-Based eHealth Platform for Creating Home Caring Environments for Older Adults Living with Chronic Diseases or Frailty

Independent living of older adults is one of the main challenges linked to the ageing population. Especially those living with diseases like COPD, MCI or frailty, need more support in everyday life and this is by itself a big societal challenge with impact in multiple sectors. In this paper we present eWALL, an innovative open-source eHealth platform that aims to address these challenges by means of an advanced cloud-based infrastructure. eWALL is designed in an innovative manner and achieved technical breakthroughs in eHealth platforms, while prioritizing user and market needs that are often abandoned and are the major reason for technically sound solutions that fail. We consider this as an opportunity and we aim to change the eHealth systems’ experience for older adults and break the barriers for the penetration of ICT solutions.     

Dendrimer‐Based Signal Amplification of Click‐Labelled DNA in Situ

The in vivo incorporation of alkyne‐modified bases into the genome of cells is today the basis for the efficient detection of cell proliferation. Cells are grown in the presence of ethinyl‐dU (EdU), fixed and permeabilised. The incorporated alkynes are then efficiently detected by using azide‐containing fluorophores and the Cu^I‐catalysed alkyne–azide click reaction. For a world in which constant improvement in the sensitivity of a given method is driving diagnostic advancement, we developed azide‐ and alkyne‐modified dendrimers that allow the establishment of sandwich‐type detection assays that show significantly improved signal intensities and signal‐to‐noise ratios far beyond that which is currently possible.     

The Interplay between Fe3O4 Superparamagnetic Nanoparticles,Sodium Butyrate,and Folic Acid for Intracellular Transport

Combined treatments which use nanoparticles and drugs could be a synergistic strategy for the treatment of a variety of cancers to overcome drug resistance, low efficacy, and high-dose-induced systemic toxicity. In this study, the effects on human colon adenocarcinoma cells of surface modified Fe₃O₄ magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in combination with sodium butyrate (NaBu), added as a free formulation, were examined demonstrating that the co-delivery produced a cytotoxic effect on malignant cells. Two different MNP coatings were investigated: a simple polyethylene glycol (PEG) layer and a mixed folic acid (FA) and PEG layer. Our results demonstrated that MNPs with FA (FA-PEG@MNPs) have a better cellular uptake than the ones without FA (PEG@MNPs), probably due to the presence of folate that acts as an activator of folate receptors (FRs) expression. However, in the presence of NaBu, the difference between the two types of MNPs was reduced. These similar behaviors for both MNPs likely occurred because of the differentiation induced by butyrate that increases the uptake of ferromagnetic nanoparticles. Moreover, we observed a strong decrease of cell viability in a NaBu dose-dependent manner. Taking into account these results, the cooperation of multifunctional MNPs with NaBu, taking into consideration the particular cancer-cell properties, can be a valuable tool for future cancer treatment.
