Fe modelling of CFRP-concrete interface subjected to cyclic temperature,humidity and mechanical stress

Modelling of environmental effects on the bond surface between FRP composites and concrete is crucial for the purpose of life prediction of strengthened members. The service performance of composite systems depends on the degree of chemical and physical aging of the system. Physical aging is a reversible process which is related mainly to temperature fluctuations. Chemical aging is the permanent molecular level degradation of fibres, resin or interfaces due to long-term exposure to the environment. The resulting strength reduction and the system behaviour due to aging are important in evaluating the strengthening of civil engineering infrastructure. In this paper, a finite element model is developed to predict the interface properties after long-term exposure to the cyclic temperature and the constant humidity. Effects of sustained loading are also taken into account. The predicted strength, cracks pattern, failure mode and strain variation along the bond line agree well with test results.     

Managing the transition to a more compact city in Australia

This paper explores the transition towards the compact city model in Australia, which has become the orthodoxy of metropolitan planning in the last two decades. This transition is aligned with neoliberal policies through which private investment and the marketplace have become dominant in driving urban growth and change. However, an intensive review of the experience of Sydney and Perth shows that a metanarrative of transition from a social-democratic to a neoliberal form in metropolitan planning is an oversimplification, and blurs the redeployment of state powers, processes and institutions to address new challenges. The paper explores two related points. First, it demonstrates how a methodical examination of the eclectic mixture of policies designed to drive the compact city transition can enable the identification and analysis of shared policy trends across the two cities. These trends relate to metropolitan strategies, transport planning, infrastructure funding, centralization and local input. Second, it demonstrates how such a review can also provide broader insights into the contours of the political economy of the compact city, and the potential significance for its citizenry. Key insights relate to who has a say in development control, growing executive power, increased government engagement with lobby groups and growing inequality.     

Autonomous detection of aerosolized biological agents by multiplexed immunoassay with polymerase chain reaction confirmation

The autonomous pathogen detection system (APDS) is an automated, podium-sized instrument that continuously monitors the air for biological threat agents (bacteria, viruses, and toxins). The system has been developed to warn of a biological attack in critical or high-traffic facilities and at special events. The APDS performs continuous aerosol collection, sample preparation, and detection using multiplexed immunoassay followed by confirmatory PCR using real-time TaqMan assays. We have integrated completely reusable flow-through devices that perform DNA extraction and PCR amplification. The fully integrated system was challenged with aerosolized Bacillus anthracis, Yersinia pestis, Bacillus globigii, and botulinum toxoid. By coupling highly selective antibody- and DNA-based assays, the probability of an APDS reporting a false positive is extremely low.     

Rigid Components in Molecular Graphs

We consider three-dimensional generic bar-and-joint realizations of squares of graphs. These graphs are also called molecular graphs due to their importance in the study of flexibility in molecules. The Molecular Conjecture, posed in 1984 by T.-S. Tay and W. Whiteley, indicates that determining rigidity (or, more generally, computing the number of degrees of freedom) of molecular graphs may be tractable by combinatorial methods. We show that the truth of the Molecular Conjecture would imply an efficient algorithm to identify the maximal rigid subgraphs of a molecular graph. In addition, we prove that the truth of two other conjectures in combinatorial rigidity (due to A. Dress and D. Jacobs, respectively) would imply the truth of the Molecular Conjecture.

Maternal behavior of socially deprived Rhesus monkeys.

The maternal behavior of 4 monkeys separated from their mothers at birth and denied opportunity to interact with other monkeys during the first 18 mo. of life is described and compared with the maternal behavior of 4 normal feral monkeys. The 4 socially deprived monkeys were grossly inadequate mothers, but the social development of the infants of these inadequate mothers was apparently normal. The maternal behavior of 5 additional mother-deprived monkeys is also described; 3 of these animals were inadequate and 2 adequate mothers. The 2 adequate mother-deprived mothers had early social experience; the 7 inadequate mothers did not. 3 inadequate mothers gave birth to a 2nd infant and exhibited normal maternal care.
