The redesign of alleyways located in commercial districts is typically undertaken to effect economic development and to develop a sense of community and a sense of place through these spaces. An investigation of a recently renovated alley in the Hollywood neighbourhood of Los Angeles, CA was conducted to assess aspects of the efficacy of this project—namely, how and by what magnitude use of the alley differed from use of an unconverted alley. Behavioural observations carried out in the East Cahuenga Pedestrian Alley and a nearby control alley revealed considerable differences in use. Findings include that nearly 90% of all recorded activity occurred in the redesigned alley and the majority of this was pedestrian- and dining-related, while control alley activity was heavily transportation- and work-oriented. Results substantiate claims that alley landscape redesign revitalises social life in commercial district alleys.  相似文献

A glycoside ester product was prepared by the transglycosylation of starch and glycerol, which yielded a mixture of 2,3-dihydroxypropyl-α-D-glucopyranoside and other glycerol glycosides, followed by interesterification of the crude glycerol glycosides with a mixture of mono-, di- and tripalmitin. The purified reaction product, consisting of ca. 77% glycerol glycoside palmitates, 14% palmitins and 9% free palmitic acid, was found to be extremely effective in lowering the interfacial tension between cottonseed oil and water—a 0.04% concentration in the oil phase lowering the interfacial tension to 1.3 dynes/cm. Abstract  

An eco-friendly catalytic amount (10 mol%) of nanocrystalline ZnO has been explored in the synthesis of new series of ferrocenyl aminophosphonic esters by a three-component reaction of ferrocene carbaldehyde, an amine, and a dialkyl phosphate. The nano ZnO catalyzed the selective synthesis of ferrocenyl aminophosphonates and no intermediate formation of either an imines or α-hydroxy phosphonate were observed. This is one of the fundamental aspects in green chemistry for simple experimental and product isolation protocol.  相似文献

Accurate prediction of phase equilibria regarding CH4 replacement in hydrate phase with high pressure CO2 is an important issue in modern reservoir engineering. In this work we investigate the possibility of establishing a thermodynamic framework for predicting the hydrate equilibrium conditions for evaluation of CO2 injection scenarios. Different combinations of equations of state and mixing rules are applied and the most accurate thermodynamic models at different CO2 concentration ranges are proposed.  相似文献

Nanoparticles of magnetites (Fe3O4) are synthesized with a new process based on electro-precipitation in ethanol medium. Drought stress is one of the major abiotic stresses that are a threat to crop production worldwide. Drought stress impairs the plants growth and yield. Therefore, the aim of the present experiment was to select the tolerant genotype/s on the basis of moprpho-physiological and biochemical characteristics of 10 Vicia faba genotypes (Zafar 1, Zafar 2, Shebam, Makamora, Espan, Giza Blanka, Giza 3, C4, C5 and G853) under drought stress. We studied the effect of different levels of drought stress i.e., (i) normal irrigation (ii) mild stress (iii) moderate stress, and (iv) severe stress on plant height (PH) plant−1, fresh weight (FW) and dry weight (DW) plant−1, area leaf−1, leaf relative water content (RWC), proline (Pro) content, total chlorophyll (Total Chl) content, electrolyte leakage (EL), malondialdehyde (MDA), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content, and activities of catalase (CAT), peroxidase (POD) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) of genotypes of faba bean. Drought stress reduced all growth parameters and Total Chl content of all genotypes. However, the deteriorating effect of drought stress on the growth performance of genotypes “C5” and “Zafar 1” were relatively low due to its better antioxidant enzymes activities (CAT, POD and SOD), and accumulation of Pro and Total Chl, and leaf RWC. In the study, genotype “C5” and “Zafar 1” were found to be relatively tolerant to drought stress and genotypes “G853” and “C4” were sensitive to drought stress.  相似文献

Assessment of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in human body is important for human health because they have weak estrogenic or antiestrogenic effects and are considered endocrine disrupters. We used colostrum of women as indicator for levels of OCPs in human body for mothers with normal and preterm labor from eastern part of Romania. Sixty- three samples of colostrum were extracted by solid-phase extraction. Analyses were carried out using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS). OCPs have been detected in all samples, with p,p’-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p’-DDE) and γ-hexachlorocyclohexane (γ-HCH) being at the highest concentrations. Of the organochlorines measured in clostrum samples from women in preterm labor, median levels of DDTs (470 ng/g) and HCHs (99 ng/g) were higher than for the same compounds from women in normal labor (median of DDTs = 268 ng/g and median of HCHs = 96 ng/g). Normal labor had higher median concentrations of HCB (19.5 ng/g) versus preterm labor (14 ng/g). Statistical data show high Spearman correlation coefficients between various OCPs. We found a good correlation between α-, γ-, β- and δ- HCH isomers (p < 0.001) for both normal and preterm labor. The most abundant target compound was p,p’-DDE (median value 96 ng/g, and 137 ng/g for mother with normal and preterm labor, respectively) in all colostrum samples. The estimated daily intakes of HCHs by infants exceeded corresponding Health Canada guidelines.  相似文献

The focus of this study is to improve the dispersion state of nanocrystalline (nc) Fe‐Ni particles in polyamide 6 (PA6) matrix and the filler‐matrix interfacial interactions to provide Fe‐Ni alloy/PA6 nanocomposites of remarkable mechanical performance for engineering applications. nc Fe40Ni60 particles were chemically synthesized. Then Fe40Ni60/PA6 nanocomposites of various nanofiller loading were prepared by compounding via a newly modified master batch technique called ultrasound assisted master batch (UMB), followed by injection molding (IM). Their mechanical properties, morphology and structural parameters were characterized and compared with the corresponding properties of Fe40Ni60/PA6 nanocomposites made by solution mixing (SM) and IM. The study reveals that the UMB process is more cost effective and time efficient, simpler and easier to scale up compared with the SM process. In addition, UMB nanocomposites exhibit superior mechanical properties and distinctive morphology compared with the corresponding SM ones. Moreover, structural analyses indicate that physical structural changes occurred in PA6 due to presence of alloy particles are affected differently by the different compounding methods, profound understanding of such phenomenon is focused throughout the article. These distinctive advantages recommend that UMB technique can be of great potential in commercial production of polymer nanocomposites (PNCs). It is concluded that the sonication of nc Fe40Ni60 particles in dilute polymer solution during UMB compounding, a new step that is incorporated for the first time in the master batch process, is mainly responsible for the good wetting between nanoparticles and polymer chains, strong filler‐matrix interactions and consequently the remarkable mechanical performance of UMB PNCs. The aromatic compounds and biological activities of essential oils from six Tunisian aromatic plants including Artemisia herba-alba, Rosmarinus officinalis, Thymus capitatus, Mentha piperita, Ocimum basilicum and Artemisia absinthium were investigated. Hydro-distillation was used to extract essential oil from these plants. The identification of compounds from essential oils was performed using GC–MS analysis. Camphor (28.47%) was the major compound of A. absinthium essential oil. High contents of verbenone (20.99%) and camphor (19.72%) were found in R. officinalis. In the case of T. capitatus, carvacrol (81.09%), gamma terpinene (6.61%) and caryophyllene (4.87%) were identified as the major compounds. While eugenol (24.69%), linalool (18.00%) were characteristic compounds of O. basilicum essential oil, camphor (39.10%) and farnesol (14.25%) together with bornyl acetate (12.31%) were the main constituents of A. absinthium. These oils were also subjected to a screening for their antioxidant activity and essential oil from A. absinthium showed a greater antioxidant activity (IC50?=?0.0063 mg/mL) compared to the standard Vitamin E (IC50?=?0.019 mg/mL). The antibacterial activities of the oils against seven pathogenic strains, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus, Salmonella, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis and Micrococcus luteus, were tested. The highest and broadest activity was shown by M. piperita; however, Ocimum basilicum was inactive against all strains. Essential oils were also evaluated for antidiabetic and anti-acetylcholinesterase activities. The IC50 values of A. herba-alba and O. basilicum against α-amylase were respectively 17.76 and 16.32 µg/mL suggesting a powerful anti-diabetic effect comparable to that of acarbose (IC50?=?14.88 µg/mL). R. officinalis, M. piperita and A. absinthium exhibited an interesting acetylcholinesterase inhibition with IC50 equal to 22, 24 and 58 µg/mL respectively.  相似文献
