3He: cosmological and atomic physics experiments

Because the superfluid 3He order parameter exhibits many similarities with that of our Universe, the superfluid condensate may be considered as a quantum vacuum that carries various types of quasiparticles and topological defects. The condensate thus provides a test system for the experimental investigation of many general physics problems in cosmology, atomic or nuclear physics that are otherwise difficult or even impossible to investigate experimentally.     

8-Deoxylankolide from a lankamycin producing Streptomyces spp

Dacryops is a closed cyst that develops on the palpebral lobe of the lacrimal gland, manifesting in the region of the external canthus. Its slow and insidious growth causes mechanical and aesthetic problems that do not regress spontaneously. Treatment involves excision of the cyst while sparing the adjacent glandular tissues. In cases associated with hypolacrimation, marsupialization of the cyst is indicated. To obtain a reduction of the cyst to an aesthetically acceptable level in cases of simple dacryops, the authors suggest argon laser therapy, which avoids the risks related to surgery and general anesthesia and eliminates the need for hospitalization. Two patients with simple dacryops were treated with blue-green argon laser under local anesthesia. At the end of follow-up, the cysts had been clinically reduced in volume and were not visible by external examination. In cases of simple dacryops, laser therapy is suitable for the reduction of the cyst. Photocoagulation treatment is not advisable in cases that are complicated by fistulas or where the clinical presentation is atypical.     

Isolation of the uterotonic principle from Leonurus artemisia, the Chinese motherwort

A search in ancient Chinese medicinal literature and modern phytochemical references indicates that the therapeutic value of Leonurus artemisia (I-mu ts'ao, the Chinese motherwort) might reside in a uterotonic principle present in leaves. Leonurine (4-guanidino-n-butyl syringate) was isolated from fresh and dry leaves of Leonurus artemisia. The uterotonic effect of leonurine was demonstrated in rat uterus in vitro. Results from this study suggest that functional phytochemistry based on ethnobotanical experience could lead to development of new and effective drugs from Chinese medicine.     

A geometry dependent thermal resistance between a saturated dilute3He-4He solution and sintered silver powder

We present direct measurements of the thermal resistance between a saturated dilute³He-⁴He solution and sintered silver powder between 5 and 150mK. Measurements obtained using different sinter geometries allow us to distinguish the contribution due to the thermal boundary resistance from that of the size-limited thermal resistance of the³He-⁴He solution within the pores of the sinter. The thermal boundary resistance per inverse unit volume is found to vary as T^–3 and is insensitive to the sinter particle size.     

Tirapazamine is metabolized to its DNA-damaging radical by intranuclear enzymes

Tirapazamine (TPZ), a new anticancer drug that is currently in Phase II and III clinical trials, has a unique mechanism of action. Its cytotoxicity is selective for hypoxic cells in solid tumors and results from DNA damage produced by a free radical, which is generated by enzymatic reduction of the parent molecule. However, there is no agreement as to which enzyme(s) are involved. Here, we have measured both DNA damage and TPZ metabolism in A549 human lung cancer cells and in isolated nuclei derived from the cells. We show that, although the nuclei metabolize TPZ at a rate that is only 20% of that of whole cells, they have levels of DNA damage that are similar to those of the cells. We also show that TPZ radicals that are formed outside nuclei do not contribute to intranuclear DNA damage. Thus, essentially all of the DNA damage from TPZ results from radicals generated within the nucleus, and the 80% of the drug metabolism that occurs in the cytoplasm is probably irrelevant for the activity of this drug in killing hypoxic cells.

采用Ｇｒｅｅｎ函数方法和Ｎｅｗｍａｎ积方法求解盒状砂岩油藏任意边界条件下的水平井开采时的渗流问题，并提出了所求压力解的快速数值方法。
