Membrane distillation (MD) is a thermal-based separation technique with the potential to treat a wide range of water types for various applications and industries. Certain challenges remain however, which prevent it from becoming commercially widespread including moderate permeate flux, decline in separation performance over time due to pore wetting and high thermal energy requirements. Nevertheless, its attractive characteristics such as high rejection (ca. 100%) of non-volatile species, its ability to treat highly saline solutions under low operating pressures (typically atmospheric) as well as its ability to operate at low temperatures, enabling waste-heat integration, continue to drive research interests globally. Of particular interest is the class of carbon-based nanomaterials which includes graphene and carbon nanotubes, whose wide range of properties have been exploited in an attempt to overcome the technical challenges that MD faces. These low dimensional materials exhibit properties such as high specific surface area, high strength, tuneable hydrophobicity, enhanced vapour transport, high thermal and electrical conductivity and others. Their use in MD has resulted in improved membrane performance characteristics like increased permeability and reduced fouling propensity. They have also enabled novel membrane capabilities such as in-situ fouling detection and localised heat generation. In this review we provide a brief introduction to MD and describe key membrane characteristics and fabrication methods. We then give an account of the various uses of carbon nanomaterials for MD applications, focussing on polymeric membrane systems. Quantitative cellular in vitro nanoparticle uptake measurements are possible with a large number of different techniques, however, all have their respective restrictions. Here, we demonstrate the application of synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence imaging (XFI) on prostate tumor cells, which have internalized differently functionalized gold nanoparticles. Total nanoparticle uptake on the order of a few hundred picograms could be conveniently observed with microsamples consisting of only a few hundreds of cells. A comparison with mass spectroscopy quantification is provided, experimental results are both supported and sensitivity limits of this XFI approach extrapolated by Monte-Carlo simulations, yielding a minimum detectable nanoparticle mass of just 5 pg. This study demonstrates the high sensitivity level of XFI, allowing non-destructive uptake measurements with very small microsamples within just seconds of irradiation time. 相似文献

Energy games belong to a class of turn-based two-player infinite-duration games played on a weighted directed graph. It is one of the rare and intriguing combinatorial problems that lie in NP∩co-NP, but are not known to be in P. The existence of polynomial-time algorithms has been a major open problem for decades and apart from pseudopolynomial algorithms there is no algorithm that solves any non-trivial subclass in polynomial time. In this paper, we give several results based on the weight structures of the graph. First, we identify a notion of penalty and present a polynomial-time algorithm when the penalty is large. Our algorithm is the first polynomial-time algorithm on a large class of weighted graphs. It includes several worst-case instances on which previous algorithms, such as value iteration and random facet algorithms, require at least sub-exponential time. Our main technique is developing the first non-trivial approximation algorithm and showing how to convert it to an exact algorithm. Moreover, we show that in a practical case in verification where weights are clustered around a constant number of values, the energy game problem can be solved in polynomial time. We also show that the problem is still as hard as in general when the clique-width is bounded or the graph is strongly ergodic, suggesting that restricting the graph structure does not necessarily help. 相似文献

Due to the increasing importance of producing and consuming energy more sustainably, Energy Informatics (EI) has evolved into a thriving research area within the CS/IS community. The article attempts to characterize this young and highly dynamic field of research by describing current EI research topics and methods and provides an outlook of how the field might evolve in the future. It is shown that two general research questions have received the most attention so far and are likely to dominate the EI research agenda in the coming years: How to leverage information and communication technology (ICT) to (1) improve energy efficiency, and (2) to integrate decentralized renewable energy sources into the power grid. Urethanes of cellobiose and cellulose-containing uretdione groups are synthesized by the reaction of aliphatic and aromatic diisocyanate uretdiones with the saccharides. The syntheses are performed as a heterogeneous reaction in dimethyl acetamide using dibutyl tin dilaurate as a catalyst, as well as a homogeneous reaction in dimethyl acetamide-lithium chloride. The reactor systems used for the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, fixed bed, fluidized bed and slurry bed, are compared on the basis of space time yield (STY) and level of conversion obtainable under the same set of feed and operating conditions. The slurry bed and fluidized bed reactor were compared on the basis of a first order reaction model. The performance of these two reactors was found to be comparable at low values of WHSV, but at higher values of WHSV, the fluidized bed reactor gave higher conversions and STY. A power law kinetic expression was used to compare the performance of the slurry bed and fixed bed reactors. Higher conversions and STY were obtained from the fixed bed with varying WHSV. This may be due to the omission of the intra and inter phase mass transfer resistances in the modelling of the fixed bed reactor. 相似文献

The Sr(B'0.5 Ta0.5 )O3 ceramics where B'=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, and Yb have been prepared by the conventional solid-state ceramic route and their microwave dielectric properties have been investigated. The structure and microstructure of the ceramics have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope techniques. The relative permittiviy (ɛr ) varies linearly with B'-site ionic radii, except for La, and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf ) varies linearly with the tolerance factor. The Sr(B'0.5 Ta0.5 )O3 ceramics have ɛr in the range 25.9–32, Q u × f =4500–54 300 GHz, and τf =−79 to −42 ppm/°C. A slight deviation from stoichiometry affects the dielectric properties of these double perovskites. Partial substitution of Ba for Sr could tune the dielectric properties. Addition of rutile (TiO2 ) lowered the sintering temperature and improved the dielectric properties of Sr(B'0.5 Ta0.5 )O3 ceramics. 相似文献
