The popularity of the iris biometric has grown considerably over the past two to three years. Most research has been focused on the development of new iris processing and recognition algorithms for frontal view iris images. However, a few challenging directions in iris research have been identified, including processing of a nonideal iris and iris at a distance. In this paper, we describe two nonideal iris recognition systems and analyze their performance. The word "nonideal" is used in the sense of compensating for off-angle occluded iris images. The system is designed to process nonideal iris images in two steps: 1) compensation for off-angle gaze direction and 2) processing and encoding of the rotated iris image. Two approaches are presented to account for angular variations in the iris images. In the first approach, we use Daugman's integrodifferential operator as an objective function to estimate the gaze direction. After the angle is estimated, the off-angle iris image undergoes geometric transformations involving the estimated angle and is further processed as if it were a frontal view image. The encoding technique developed for a frontal image is based on the application of the global independent component analysis. The second approach uses an angular deformation calibration model. The angular deformations are modeled, and calibration parameters are calculated. The proposed method consists of a closed-form solution, followed by an iterative optimization procedure. The images are projected on the plane closest to the base calibrated plane. Biorthogonal wavelets are used for encoding to perform iris recognition. We use a special dataset of the off-angle iris images to quantify the performance of the designed systems. This work is the first part of an overall project the aim of which is the development of general mix design rules for concrete containing different kinds of mineral admixtures. The separation of the different physical effects responsible for the modification of cement hydration, when chemically inert quartz powders are used in mortars, is presented. The phenomenological approach, based on semi-adiabatic calorimetry, is only associated with first-order phenomena, and the study excludes the complex physicochemical details involved in the chemistry of cement. The results, obtained for a wide range of fineness (between 180 and 2000 m2/kg) and replacement rates (up to 75%), show that short-term degrees of hydration in mortars containing a chemically inert mineral admixture (quartz) are always higher than for a reference mortar. This study confirms that cement hydration is enhanced by inert mineral admixtures. The two main physical effects responsible for the modification of the hydration of cement are identified as the dilution effect and heterogeneous nucleation. The dilution effect of the cement is highlighted with a coarse mineral admixture. The heterogeneous nucleation effect, although it increases with fineness of mineral admixtures, presents an optimum depending on the replacement rate. In the following part of this work, these results will be used for the development of an empirical model allowing us to quantify both physical effects. 相似文献

Many developing world cities have seen the emergence of informal markets where private tanker truck operators transport water extracted from peri-urban wells to urban consumers. This study adopted a systems-modelling approach to analyzing the informal tanker market in India. The results indicate that the demand for tanker supply was caused by lack of groundwater availability in private wells as well as unreliable piped supply. The study shows that two groundwater factors are relevant: depth to water and aquifer productivity. Together, these could explain the difference in spatial, temporal and consumer-specific variations in tanker dependence. 相似文献

It was possible to fractionate soy protein into two soy protein isolate fractions (>90% protein) enriched in either glycinin
or β-conglycinin by using a new simplified procedure (referred to as the Deak procedure) employing CaCl2 and NaHSO3. The Deak procedure produced fractions with higher yields of solids, protein, and isoflavones, and similar protein purities
as well as improved functional properties compared to fractions recovered by established, more complex soy protein fractionation
procedures. The Deak glycinin-rich fraction comprised 15.5% of the solids, 24.4% of the protein, and 20.5% of the isoflavones
in the starting soy flour, whereas the glycinin-rich fraction of the established procedure (Wu procedure) comprised only 11.6%
of the solids, 22.3% of the protein, and 9.6% of the isoflavones. The Deak β-conglycinin-rich fraction comprised 23.1% of
the solids, 37.1% of the protein, and 37.5% of the isoflavones in the starting soy flour, whereas the Wu β-conglycinin-rich
fraction comprised only 11.5% of the solids, 18.5% of the protein, and 3.3% of the isoflavones. Protein purities were >80%
for both fractions when using both procedures. The Wu procedure produced protein fractions with slightly higher solubilities
and similar surface hydrophobicities; whereas, the fractions produced by the Deak procedure had superior emulsification and

Nondestructive sensing of a single-carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites was evaluated by the measurement of electrical resistivity under reversible cyclic loading. For the strain–stress sensing, the strain up to the maximum load of a bare carbon fiber itself is larger than that of carbon fiber composite. As curing temperature increased, apparent modulus up to the maximum load increased and the elapsed time became shorter. Higher residual stress might contribute to the improved interfacial adhesion. The strain up to the maximum load at low temperature was larger than that at higher temperature. The strain of electrodeposition (ED) treated carbon fiber was smaller than that of the untreated carbon fiber composite until the maximum load reached. This could be due to higher apparent modulus of composite based on the improved interfacial shear strength (IFSS). Since the electrical resistivity was responded well quantitatively with various parameters, such as matrix modulus, the fiber surface modification, the electrical resistivity measurement can be a feasible method of nondestructive sensing evaluation for conductive fiber reinforced composites inherently. 相似文献

Calculation of electromagnetic (EM) scattering from vibrating penetrable cylinders of arbitrary cross-section is presented using a general class of time-varying sheet boundary conditions (SBCs) in conjunction with the method of moments (MoM). Sheet impedance and admittance expressions are first derived from the exact scattering solution for a penetrable circular cylinder with perturbed radius. Then, using the SBCs, integral equations are derived and solved numerically so that vibrating cylinders with arbitrary cross-section can be treated. Cylinder vibrations are assumed to be non-relativistic, allowing a simplified calculation of the scattered Doppler spectrum. A critical factor in the calculation of the potentially small Doppler components is that the time-varying nature of the cylinder boundary, contained within the sheet impedance and admittance expressions, can be isolated from the unperturbed terms in the scattered field. Comparison with exact and analytical perturbation solutions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the numerical solution. 相似文献

Results of a room temperature magnetic refrigeration test bed and an analysis using a computational model are presented. A detailed demonstration of the four sequential processes in the transient magnetocaloric regeneration process of a magnetic material is presented. The temperature profile during the transient approach to steady state operation was measured in detail. A 5 °C evolution of the difference of temperature between the hot end and the cold end of the magnetocaloric bed due to regeneration is reported. A model is developed for the heat transfer and fluid mechanics of the four sequential processes in each cycle of thermal wave propagation in the regenerative bed combined with the magnetocaloric effect. The basic equations that can be used in simulation of magnetic refrigeration systems are derived and the design parameters are discussed. 相似文献

We present a new solver for coupled nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs). The solver is based on pseudo-spectral collocation with domain decomposition and can handle one- to three-dimensional problems. It has three distinct features. First, the combined problem of solving the PDE, satisfying the boundary conditions, and matching between different subdomains is cast into one set of equations readily accessible to standard linear and nonlinear solvers. Second, touching as well as overlapping subdomains are supported; both rectangular blocks with Chebyshev basis functions as well as spherical shells with an expansion in spherical harmonics are implemented. Third, the code is very flexible: The domain decomposition as well as the distribution of collocation points in each domain can be chosen at run time, and the solver is easily adaptable to new PDEs. The code has been used to solve the equations of the initial value problem of general relativity and should be useful in many other problems. We compare the new method to finite difference codes and find it superior in both runtime and accuracy, at least for the smooth problems considered here. 相似文献
