A Model of Joined Beams as Limit of a 2<Emphasis Type="Italic">D</Emphasis> Plate

In this paper, we consider an elastic multi-structure composed of two joined beams forming an angle \(\alpha\in \, ]0,\frac{\pi}{2}]\) at the junction, clamped at the three extremities and submitted to forces transverse to the plane containing the skeleton of the multi-structure. We derive the equilibrium configuration of the transverse displacement and the torsional rotation of the multi-structure, via an asymptotic analysis based on a dimensional reduction of a Kirchhoff-Love plate. More generally, we obtain the equilibrium configuration of the transverse displacement and the torsional rotation of a multi-structure whose skeleton is composed of a line and a planar curve joined together.     

Intermediate molybdenum oxides involved in binary and ternary induced electrodeposition

The first stages of Co–Ni and Co–Ni–Mo deposition in sulphate–citrate medium at pH 4.0 were analysed. In both cases, the formation of non-hydrogenated nickel on the electrode before alloy deposition was detected by linear sweep voltammetry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Co–Ni electrodeposition was anomalous since the Co/Ni ratio in the alloy was higher than the corresponding [Co(II)]/[Ni(II)] ratio in solution. The adsorption of Co(II) over the initial nickel could explain the anomalous codeposition, which persisted with the addition of molybdate to the Co–Ni bath. However, the formation of intermediate molybdenum oxides also took place. A mechanism has been proposed to describe the sequence of steps for Co–Ni–Mo electrodeposition. Under our conditions, the alloy is formed mainly from free Co²⁺ and Ni²⁺ cations, whereas molybdate is reduced firstly to molybdenum oxide from MoO₄(H₃Cit)²⁻ and, secondly, NiCit⁻ catalyses the subsequent reduction to molybdenum metal of the intermediate [MoO₂–NiCit⁻]_ads species.

Riassunto In questo lavoro ci occupiamo di problemi al contorno per una classe di operatori lineari quasi ellittici del tipoA+σ, dove σ è una perturbazione assegnata; proviamo che l'operatore associato al problema è di Fredholm con indice zero e studiamo le proprietà spettrali dell'operatore associato al problema con condizioni al contorno omogenee.

Summary In this paper we study boundary value problems for linear quasi elliptic (A+σ)-type operators, where σ is an assigned perturbation; we prove that the related operator is a Fredholm operator whose index is zero. Then we study spectral properties of the operator related to the problem with homogeneous boundary conditions.

Synthesis and structural,magnetic and electrochemical characterization of PtCo nanoparticles prepared by water-in-oil microemulsion

PtCo nanoparticles with homogeneous size (around 3–4 nm) have been synthesized in a water-in-oil microemulsion of water/polyethylenglycol–dodecylether (BRIJ^®30)/n-heptane. X-ray diffraction study revealed the formation of a cubic phase with a gradual decrease of the cell parameter with increasing cobalt incorporation in the crystalline lattice of platinum. In relation to their magnetic properties, the PtCo nanoparticles present a superparamagnetic behaviour even after annealing, although higher permeability was induced by the thermal treatment. Finally, the electrocatalytic activity of the particles towards oxalic acid oxidation in H₂SO₄ was evaluated. The Pt74Co26 nanoparticles showed the highest reactivity for this reaction.     

Sharp Global Well-Posedness for a Higher Order Schrodinger Equation

Using the theory of almost conserved energies and the "I-method" developed by Colliander, Keel, Staffilani, Takaoka and Tao, we prove that the initial value problem for a higher order Schrodinger equation is globally well-posed in Sobolev spaces of order s > 1/4. This result is sharp.     

Substituent control of potassium and rubidium uptake by asymmetric calix[4]-thiacalix[4]tubes

Herein we report on the synthesis and ionophore properties of the first asymmetric p-tert-butylcalix[4]-p-R-thiacalix[4]tubes 7a-c (R = t-Bu, H, 1-adamantyl). The target compounds were obtained by the condensation of tosyloxyethoxy-p-tert-butylcalix[4]arene with the corresponding p-R-thiacalix[4]arenes in the presence of K2CO3 in acetonitrile. The complexation with sodium, potassium and rubidium iodides was studied in CDCl3-CD3OD (4:1) medium by means of 1H NMR measurements. It was found that the ionophore properties of calixtubes 7a-c are controlled by the character of the substituents at the upper rim of the thiacalix[4]arene fragment and it was shown that only the molecular tube 7c with an adamantane-containing thiacalixarene unit is capable of quantitatively binding potassium (swiftly) and rubidium (slowly) cations.     

Wave features of a hyperbolic prey–predator model

A hyperbolic predator–prey model is proposed within the context of extended thermodynamics. The nature of the steady state solutions for the uniform and non‐uniform perturbations are analyzed. The existence of smooth traveling wave‐like solutions, related to the invasion of the predator population into a prey‐only state is discussed. Validation of the model in point is also accomplished by searching for numerical solutions of the system, which also points out limit cycles in the populations.
