ABSTRACTChiral materials possess some unusual properties which make them interesting for useful applications in nanophotonics. In this work, we review the basic techniques used to achieve electromagnetically induced chirality in initially isotropic materials and mention some of their novel operations. Next, we investigate the transmission characteristics of two different multi-level atomic models in which chirality is introduced by magnetoelectric cross coupling of external electromagnetic fields with atomic transitions, leading to quantum coherence. The left-(lcp) and right-circularly polarized (rcp) beams, the two eigenmodes of a chiral medium, are shown to transmit in an anti-symmetric manner with respect to the probe field detuning and control field magnitude variations. This selective transmission of a particular mode at specific detunings may find applications in optical isolation and storage. We further demonstrate that the driving control fields and their effective phase can be used as tuning knobs to manipulate the medium's birefringence and the transmission of the eigenmodes. 相似文献

We show how nanoimprint lithographic techniques are particularly suited for the realization of OLED device structures. We tested them to realize nanopatterned metallic electrodes containing photonic crystals to couple the light out and plasmonic crystals showing extraordinary transmission. At similar current densities, a two-fold electroluminescence is achieved with devices having double-sided structured metallic electrodes as compared to a control OLED with an ITO anode. The use of combined nanoimprint lithography processes has the potential to expand the performance range of various organic optoelectronic devices. 相似文献

Duty cycling is a fundamental approach used in contention‐based medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to reduce power consumption in sensor nodes. Existing duty cycle‐based MAC protocols use either scheduling or low‐power listening (LPL) to reduce unnecessary energy lost caused by idle listening and overhearing. This paper presents a new asynchronous duty‐cycled MAC protocol for WSN. It introduces a novel dual preamble sampling (DPS) approach to efficiently coordinate channel access among nodes. DPS combines LPL with a short‐strobed preamble approach to significantly reduce the idle‐listening issue in existing asynchronous protocols. We provide detailed analysis of the energy consumption by using well‐known energy models and compare our work with B‐MAC and X‐MAC, two most popular asynchronous duty cycle‐based MAC protocols for WSNs. We also present experimental results based on NS‐2 simulations. We show that depending on the traffic load and preamble length, the proposed MAC protocol improves energy consumption significantly without degrading network performances in terms of delivery ratio and latency. For example, for a traffic rate of 0.1 packets/s and a preamble length of 0.1 s, the average improvement in energy consumption is about 154%. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In the paper we present parallel solutions for performing image contour ranking on coarse-grained machines. In contour ranking, a linear representation of the edge contours is generated from the edge contours of a raw image. We describe solutions that employ different divide-and-conquer approaches and that use different communication patterns. The combining step of the divide-and-conquer solutions uses efficient sequential techniques for merging information about subimages. The proposed solutions are implemented on Intel Delta and Intel Paragon machines. This paper investigates a high performance implementation of an Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian moving mesh technique on shared
memory systems using OpenMP environment. Moving mesh techniques are considered an integral part of a wider class of fluid
mechanics problems that involve moving and deforming spatial domains, namely, free-surface flows and Fluid Structure Interaction
(FSI). The moving mesh technique adopted in this work is based on the notion of nodes relocation, subjected to a certain evolution
as well as constraint conditions. A conjugate gradient method augmented with preconditioning is employed for solution of the
resulting system of equations. The proposed algorithm, initially, reorders the mesh using an efficient divide and conquer
approach and then parallelizes the ALE moving mesh scheme. Numerical simulations are conducted on the multicore AMD Opteron
and Intel Xeon processors, and unstructured triangular and tetrahedral meshes are used for the 2D and 3D problems. The quality
of generated meshes is checked by comparing the element Jacobians in the reference and current meshes, and by keeping track
of the change in the interior angles in triangles and tetrahedrons. Overall, 51 and 72% efficiencies in terms of speedup are

This paper presents a scalable content-based image indexing and retrieval system based on vector wavelet coefficients of color images. Highly decorrelated wavelet coefficient planes are used to acquire a search efficient feature space. The feature space is subsequently indexed using properties of all the images in the database. Therefore, the feature key of an image not only corresponds to the content of the image itself but also to how much the image is different from the other images being stored in the database. The search time linearly depends on the number of images similar to the query image and is independent of the database size. We show that, in a database of 5,000 images, query search takes less than 30 msec on a 266 MHz Pentium II processor, compared to several seconds of retrieval time in the earlier systems proposed in the literature 相似文献

Two radio channel simulators based on the time variant frequency transfer function have been implemented using digital signal processing techniques in SIMULINK. The first simulator uses a two ray channel model to determine the number of taps per coherent bandwidth of the channel by comparing the bit error rate (BER) with the tapped delay line model for differential quadrature phase shift keying. The results show that ten taps per coherent bandwidth are appropriate for a very close approximation of the channel. The second simulator utilises real channel measurements to estimate the BER for the IEEE 802.16 -2004 wireless metropolitan area network orthogonal frequency division-multiplexing standard with 256 carriers. Channel measurements at three frequencies in the 2-6-GHz frequency band in rural/semi rural environment demonstrate the simulator and relate the BER performance of the standard to the frequency selectivity of the channel. 相似文献

The present study demonstrates the synthesis and antimicrobial activity of the p-tetranitrocalix[4]arene (3). The microbial activity was determined against a variety of microorganisms, i.e., Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains such as Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 10231, Streptococcus viridans ATCC 12392, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, as well as some fungal species including Aspergillus niger ATCC 16404, Aspergillus flavus ATCC 90906, and Candida albicans ATCC 32333. Kirby-Bauer well agar diffusion method was employed for the determination of antimicrobial activity. All the microorganisms were applied to a selective agar medium (Mueller Hinton Agar) for growth. It was observed that compound 3 is considerably effective against selected microorganisms. The MIC values were also evaluated. Thus, from the results it could be deduced that compound 3 may be a valuable addition to the therapeutic index. 相似文献
