A GIS for ocean applications called “the Xiamen Atmospheric and Oceanographic Data Management and Display System (AODMDS)” has been designed and developed. The system is based on ArcObjects (AO), a component-based GIS development tool. The paper discusses in detail the storage and organization of the atmospheric and oceanographic data, the strategy and methods for the visualization and mapping of oceanographic and atmospheric data, and the implementation of the methods in AODMDS. It also discusses some advanced display control techniques that expand the functions of ArcObjects. One of the techniques is “gradient-fill-style color-map control,” which provides a feasible color-rich display control for all types of raster maps. As a stand-alone desktop GIS system built on AO, AODMDS provides effective data management and powerful mapping and visualization functions for atmospheric and oceanographic data.

Integrated Mobile GIS and Wireless Internet Map Servers for Environmental Monitoring and Management

With the progress of mobile GIS technology there is a great potential for adopting wireless communications and Internet mapping services for regional environmental management programs and natural habitat conservation. This paper provides an overview of a NASA-funded research project that focuses on the development of mobile GIS tools and wireless Internet Map Server (IMS) services to facilitate environmental monitoring and management tasks. By developing and testing wireless web-based map/image servers, mobile GIS applications, and global positional systems (GPS), this research created an integrated software/hardware infrastructure for a prototype mobile GIS application. The mobile GIS prototype allows multiple resource managers and park rangers to access large-size, remotely sensed images and GIS layers from a portable web server mounted in a vehicle. Users can conduct real-time spatial data updates and/or submit changes back to the web server over the wireless local area network (WLAN). This paper discusses in general the major components of mobile GIS, their current technological limitations, and potential problems during implementation. Key research agenda for mobile GIS are identified with suggestions for future research and development.

Creating a GIS application for retail centers in Jeddah city

The aim of this paper is to identify the role of geographical information systems (GIS) in supporting retail planners in monitoring and analyzing retail development and growth. At first, a review about retail planning and its relevant issues is made. Second, GIS is defined together with its applications in retail planning. The third part discusses the created GIS application that is designed for two retail centers in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. This application is created to help planners in defining the distribution of retail demand, describing customers profile, analyzing trade areas and modeling retail flows. Two useful models have been produced by this study. One is called market penetration and the other is based on spatial interaction technique. The former is created to examine retail center catchment area, while the latter is used to model the interaction between demand areas and retail centers.

GIS数据库与地图数据库关系辨析

系统地阐述了地图、地理信息系统、地图数据库、地理信息系统(GIS)数据库之间的相互联系，着重指出了地图数据库、GIS数据库之间的差别。针对人们对地图数据库与GIS数据库的模糊认识，以及我国不同阶段地理数据生产、地理数据库建设的途径、生产工艺的特点，指出了当前我国不少GIS数据的建设实际上还是地图数据库的建设，没有达到GIS数据库建设的要求。文章认为，以目前GIS的技术水平，同时建立与维护GIS数据库与地图数据库的必要性。地图数据库为社会提供各种比例尺的地图服务，GIS数据库为其应用提供各种时空尺度的地理信息服务。随着GIS技术及制图综合技术的发展，最终将以统一的GIS数据库同时提供多比例尺地图服务及各种时空尺度的地理信息服务。

A Perspective on the Fundamentals of Fuzzy Sets and their Use in Geographic Information Systems

The development of fuzzy sets in geographic information systems (GIS) arose out of the need to handle uncertainty and the ability of soft computing technology to support fuzzy information processing. An overview of the fundamentals of fuzzy sets is used to illustrate its use in GIS. The use of some terms within both the GIS and fuzzy information processing community is clarified. Since one of the key problems when applying fuzzy sets to GIS problems is in the specification of grades of membership, the many methods used to specify memberships in fuzzy sets in GIS applications are presented. The α–cut is defined and shown to be of increasing importance in GIS. Non–compensatory and compensatory connectives are compared. Aggregation operators are reviewed and shown to be useful in a number of GIS studies. Fuzzy relations and fuzzy control systems are briefly discussed with reference to their use in GIS and in relation to the development of modern soft computing technology. Several features of fuzzy sets make that paradigm attractive for use in GIS. It is concluded that as GIS–related applications increase in their levels of complexity and sophistication fuzzy sets will play a major, cost effective role in their development.

基于WEB三维虚拟场景的建立

随着万维网的发展,在网上实现3维图形的显示、漫游、分析和量测成为研究的焦点内容之一。本文总结了基于WEB的三维虚拟场景的建立与编程技术———VRML与Java3D技术,对这两种技术的运行机理、实现机制作了较详细的论述,并给出了相应的实例。实例证明基于VRML和Java3D建立WEB上的三维模型可以提供给用户一个逼真的、实时的、可交互的三维虚拟场景。
