The structure of the rotifer community in relation to lake pH, trophic status, the type of planktivore assemblage and the crustacean community was assessed in a survey of 23 lakes ranging in pH from 4.4 to 7.3, and in a study of two lakes — one acidic, the other circumneutral — during two summers. In both investigations the number of rotifer species encountered per sample was strongly reduced with pH. Although the reason for this is not clear acid-stress, the ultraoligotrophic nature of the acidic lakes, and competitive interactions with crustacean zooplankters may all have played a role. More importantly the ecological significance of this relationship is not known. The rotifer Keratella taurocephala was a principle species in the most acidic lakes, while several common rotifers were notably absent from these lakes. Although rotifer abundance was correlated with lake pH, the results of this study indicate that rotifer abundance is not a result of lake pH per se, but of lake trophic status and interactions with the crustacean community.  相似文献

The distribution of rotifer communities between emergent (Typha angustifolia) and submerged (Chara tomentosa) vegetation and a comparatively open water zone were compared during the spring, summer and autumn seasons at three macrophyte-dominated lakes. This survey identified 107 rotifera species of which 58% of the taxonomical structure was common for the three examined lakes. Stoneworts with a more complicated spatial and morphological structure (having a much longer stem length than the narrow leaf cattail), supported higher rotifer densities. The stem length appeared to be the best predictor of all the macrophyte parameters and pH and chlorophyll a for the chemical variables, for explaining the variation of rotifer densities using the stepwise multiple forward regressions. The distribution of pelagic species did not differ between particular sites, which may have reflected the behavioural requirements of those rotifers. Some of them remained in the open water zone while others seeking an anti-predator refuge, gathered within macrophyte stands during the daytime. Moreover, there were nine Chara-associated species recorded and only one Typha-associated species was noted. An effect of age of quarry lakes on rotifer abundance and species composition has been evaluated. Rotifers occurred in all lakes under study. They were even found in the youngest (2 years of age) one, Rogonica 4, but both rotifer density and species richness were low there. Rotifer communities of much higher density and species diversity were noted in lakes only 4–6 years older. Lakes of over 30 years of age were strongly differentiated in rotifer numbers and species structure. In general, age of quarry lakes has an impact on rotifer communities only at the very beginning of the process of colonization. Several years later other factors become more important, e.g., depth or trophic state of the lakes.  相似文献

Rotifer community structure of the oligotrophic, alpine lake KGnigssee was investigated from October 1982 to October 1983. Twenty different species were found, including several cold-stenothermal and oligotrophic species. Polyarthra vulgaris/dolichoptera, Kellicottia longispina and Keratella cochlearis were the most abundant species throughout the year, comprising 90% of the total rotifer community (2.8 × 106 individuals m–2, maximum). The remainder of the rotifer community was represented by as many as eight species which occured for a short time in summer and autumn. The rotifer community was limited to the upper 50 m (85–100%) in which most (60–80%) of the rotifers preferred the trophogenic layer (0–20 m). Species-specific depth preferences were observed. Rotifer abundance and distribution are discussed in terms of the specific environmental conditions in Königssee. The rotifer community of Konigssee is compared to that of Lake Constance in its former oligotrophic state.  相似文献

Pelagic rotifers were studied in lakes with contrasting acidification histories situated in an acid-stressed region of southern Norway. Life histories and spatial distribution varied considerably between the investigated species, and influenced the recovery processes. Most headwater lakes have experienced strongly acidified environments during the last five decades, whereas lakes close to the Skagerrak coast have been stable within the same period. Rotifer diversity and abundance were reduced in the most acidic sites and increased towards the coast. Most surveyed species are known to possess sediment egg-banks, and after chemical recovery most rotifers dispersed into the plankton from these egg-banks and produced viable populations. Some species of the genera Polyarthra and Collotheca, and the species Kellicotta longispina and Keratella serrulata showed a striking ability to tolerate acidification, and were the dominant taxa in the acidmost environments. K. serrulata characterised, but did not numerically dominate, acid rotifer communities especially in the most coloured sites, and decreased following liming. The predominantly bacteriophageous genus Conochilus exploded in numbers shortly after liming, most probably because bacteria increased strongly during this transition phase. Planktivorous fish influenced indirectly rotifer abundance by consuming invertebrate predators and important rotifer competitors such as filter feeding cladocerans. Invertebrate predators, such as larvae of Chaoborus spp. and Heterocope saliens probably influenced rotifer distributional patterns in a complex top-down manner, both during chronic acidification and liming in environments with low fish predation. Important rotifer predators such as pelagic cyclopoid copepods, Bythotrephes longimanus and Leptodora kindti, were absent from the most acidic fishless lakes. Considerable populations of large-sized Daphnia longispina probably suppressed several rotifer species in sites with low fish predation, as did large populations of Bosmina longispina and Ceriodaphina quadrangula in lakes with intense fish predation.  相似文献

The planktonic rotifer biomass and abundance in two trace metal-contaminated, acidified lakes were compared with that of six non-acidic lakes in central Ontario, Canada, which had low levels of metals. Rotifers, especially Keratella taurocephala Myers, were an order of magnitude more abundant in the acidified lakes. They composed 16 to 51% of the total zooplankton biomass in these lakes, but <2% in the non-acidic lakes. Recent experimental work supports a hypothesis that the great abundance of rotifers in the acidic lakes is attributable to a reduction in densities of crustacean competitors.  相似文献

Rotifer Kellicottia bostoniensis (Rousselet), typical for North American waterbodies, was found in three reservoirs (Ivankovo, Uglich, and Sheksna) of the Upper Volga Basin in 2005–2012. We investigated monogonont rotifers in two natural Macedonian lakes that greatly differ in age, size and trophic state: Lake Ohrid and Lake Dojran. A main characteristic of Lake Ohrid is the scarcity of nutrients and consequently a low level of primary production. Lake Dojran represents a typical eutrophic lake. Results clearly indicate that species numbers are negatively correlated with trophic degree. Qualitative analyses of rotifer compositions in Lakes Ohrid and Dojran showed the presence of 70 and 55 taxa, respectively. Rotifer assemblages differed in their community structure, population densities, and the occurrence pattern of dominant species. The density of rotifers increased with increasing nutrient concentration, varying from min. 0.67 ind. L−1 in June, 2006 to max. 8.2 ind. L−1 in July, 2004 in Lake Ohrid, whereas min. 28.8 ind. L−1 (in December, 2005) and max. 442.5 ind. L−1 (in September, 2005) were recorded in Lake Dojran. Gastropus stylifer and Keratella cochlearis were the most abundant species in the pelagic zone of Lake Ohrid, averaging monthly densities of 1.2 ind. L−1 and 0.6 ind. L−1, respectively, thereby contributing 29% and 15% to rotifer abundance. In contrast, Lake Dojran rotifers were dominated by Brachionus spp. Brachionus diversicornis and Brachionus calyciflorus f. amphiceros were most abundant, comprising 40% and 25% of the total rotifer density. These results corroborate our idea, that the trophic state is an important factor in determining the composition of rotifer communities.  相似文献

Predation and food supply are generally perceived as important determinants of spatial and temporal variations of populations. The population dynamics of freshwater rotifers have been well researched in this aspect. However, their spatial variations have attracted less attention and have not been studied by simultaneously considering both predation and food supply. We studied spatial variations of rotifer abundance among 34 Canadian boreal lakes. A large part of the variance of rotifer abundance was associated with variables related to trophic status including chlorophyll a and total phosphorus. However, abundances of mesozooplankton such as potential predators and competitors did not correlate with rotifer abundance and did not explain the residual of the regression between rotifer abundance and chlorophyll a. The results of the present study indicated that variation in rotifer abundance among lakes was caused by bottom-up forces related to food supply and not by top-down predatory interactions. This provides a contrast to previous empiric and experimental studies that reported that temporal variations of rotifer abundance were mainly regulated by top-down interactions. This discrepancy suggests that overall differences in rotifer abundance among lakes are mainly determined by bottom-up forces while temporal changes in single lakes are shaped by top-down forces. Meanwhile, the composition of rotifer species was correlated with mesozooplankton abundance as well as trophic status. Rotifer species with long spines or rigid loricae were found in the lakes where mesozooplankton were abundant, which suggests that defensive morphology could have affected the rotifer species distribution among the study lakes.  相似文献

The rotifer fauna of 19 mostly small water bodies (natural and artificial ponds, clay-pits and pools) in Pozna was studied on four occasions during 1996–98 to determine the suitability of urban areas for rotifer habitats. Rotifers were present in all the water bodies studied, with 114 species in 39 genera found, representing ca. 25% of all rotifers recorded from Poland. Mean diversity was 10 spp (range 1–36). Most common were: Brachionus angularis and Keratella cochlearis (spring), Colurella uncinata, Lecane closterocercaand Lepadella patella (summer) and L. closterocerca and K. cochlearis (autumn). Rotifer densities (1-1503 ind l–1), Shannon's diversity (H 0.00-3.71) and dominant species differed in different water-bodies. The index of percentage similarity of community showed strong differences in qualitative structure of rotifer assemblages. The different types of water habitats, both the existing or the newly created in towns, may explain the relatively high diversity of rotifer communities observed in the urban areas studied.  相似文献

A review of the literature on rotifers and crustacean zooplankton in highly acidic environments revealed that data from eleven aquatic environments on three continents (America, Europe, Japan) with a pH 3 are available. Seven sites are influenced by volcanism or weathering processes in the catchment area, four others originated from human mining activities. Species richness was generally low. Only 16 species are found and 1–11 species are reported for each area. These studies clearly show that small littoral or benthic rotifers predominate over crustaceans under highly acidic conditions. In the Lusatian mining area (Germany), all lakes are colonized by zooplankton, even the most acidic one with a pH of 2.3. The core community consists of the rotifers Cephalodella hoodi, C. gibba, Elosa worallii and Rotaria rotatoria, with C. hoodi and E. worallii the most abundant. Larger species, such as the rotifer Brachionus sericus or the cladoceran Chydorus sphaericus, occur at a pH close to 3. A similar pattern is reported from acidic mining lakes in Illinois, U.S.A. Many of these species can also be found in less acidic softwater or even alkaline environments due to the tolerance of a broad range of pH values. Elosa worallii and Brachionus sericus are probably the most acidophilic rotifer species, though at least the latter can also grow at neutral pH in the laboratory. Clear understanding of the pH limits of B. sericus in nature may also have been complicated by the fact that it has probably in the past been wrongly named as B. urceolaris (phenotype `sericus'). The typical B. urceolaris cannot tolerate extremely low pH. Overall, generalist species with a worldwide distribution seem to play the major role in the colonization of anthropogenic highly acidic lakes.  相似文献

Freshwater zooplankton species differ in their consumption of live and dead algal cells when tested in situ. Using isotopically-labeled living and heat-killed Chlamydomonas reinhardti as models for phytoplankton and detrital seston, respectively, we tested differential feeding on these foods by 3 rotifers and 2 microcrustaceans. Keratella cochlearis selectively feeds on detrital materials while 2 sympatric rotifer species, Conochilus dossuarius and Kellicottia bostoniensis show no ability to discriminate between the living and dead foods. Both the copepod Diaptomus spatulocrenatus and a cladoceran, Bosmina sp., differentially consume living cells.  相似文献

The rotifer communities of 15 acidic – alkaline and soft – marginally hard water floodplain lakes of the lower Assam valley of the Brahmaputra river basin, characterized by low ionic concentrations, reveal 164 species (178 taxa) belonging to 39 genera and 20 families and represent the richest biodiversity known to date in these ecotones of the Indian subcontinent. Nine species are new to the Indian Rotifera. Cosmopolitan (59.7%) > pantropical (15.2%) > cosmotropical (12.2%) species dominate the taxocoenosis. Biogeographically interesting elements constitute a notable component (13.4%); important members of this category include six Oriental, two Australasian and seven Palaeotropical species. The examined fauna depicts a tropical character with predominance of Lecanespp. (28.0%). Littoral or periphytic rotifers (76.2%) dominate the planktonic species. Rotifers comprise a dominant qualitative (67–103, 79.1±11.0 species) and an important quantitative (mean: 41.1–65.9%) component of zooplankton in all floodplain lakes, register a moderate diversity (mean: 2.036–2.642), low dominance (mean: 0.019–0.216) and high evenness (mean: 0.840–0.893). The examined material indicates several interesting acidophilous elements. Richness depicts significant inverse correlation with pH. Water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen and alkalinity record significant direct relationships with the rotifer abundance. Diversity is influenced by abundance and is also directly correlated with water temperature and conductivity. Canonical analysis shows a notable cumulative impact of six abiotic factors on richness, density and diversity.  相似文献

The mid-summer phytoplankton communities of more than 100 Adirondack lakes ranging in pH from 4.0 to 7.2 were characterized in relation to 25 physical-chemical parameters. Phytoplankton species richness declined significantly with increasing acidity. Acidic lakes (pH < 5.0) averaged fewer than 20 species while more circumneutral waters (pH > 6.5) averaged more than 33 species. Phytoplankton abundance was not significantly correlated with any of the measured physical-chemical parameters, but standing crop parameters, i.e., chlorophyll a and phytoplankton biovolume, did correlate significantly with several parameters. Midsummer standing crop correlated best with total phosphorus concentration but acidity status affected the standing crop-phosphorus relationship. Circumneutral waters of low phosphorus content, i.e. < 10 µg·1–1 TP, averaged 3.62 µg·1–1 chlorophyll a whereas acidic lakes of the same phosphorus content averaged only 1.96 µg·1–1 chlorophyll a. The midsummer chlorophyll content of lakes of high phosphorus content, i.e. > 10 µg·1–1 TP, was not significantly affected by acidity status.Adirondack phytoplankton community composition changes with increasing acidity. The numbers of species in midsummer collections within all major taxonomic groups of algae are reduced with increasing acidity. The midsummer phytoplankton communities of acidic Adirondack lakes can generally be characterized into four broad types; 1) the depauperate clear water acid lake assemblage dominated by dinoflagellates, 2) the more diverse oligotrophic acid lake community dominated by cryptomonads, green algae, and chrysophytes, 3) the productive acid lake assemblage dominated by green algae, and 4) the chrysophyte dominated community. The major phytoplankton community types of acid lakes are associated with different levels of nutrients, aluminum concentrations, and humic influences.  相似文献

I examined the effects of a graded density of the large-bodied cladoceran Daphnia pulicaria upon a natural rotifer assemblage to assess the relative magnitudes of interference and exploitative competition. An in situ, 5-day, bag-enclosure experiment was conducted to test the hypothesis that populations of the rotifers Anuraeopsis spp., Keratella cochlearis typica and Polyarthra spp. are differentially suppressed by interference competition. Rotifer density decreases and observed vs. expected mortality rates for all three rotifer taxa were consistent with the hypothesis of suppression via interference competition. Evidence of exploitative effects were also apparent, though interference effects appeared more important at higher cladoceran densities.  相似文献

The limnetic and littoral zooplankton were studied during summer 1989 in Triangle Lake, a humic acid (pH 4.9) bog lake in Ohio, USA. The limnetic zooplankton showed low species richness and biomass, and dominance by the rotifers Kellicottia bostoniensis and Polyarthra vulgaris. In the littoral, species richness and biomass were markedly higher, and the crustaceans Alona guttata, Ceriodaphnia quadrangula, Chydorus sphaericus, Simocephalus serrulatus and Tropocyclops prasinus, and the rotifer Ascomorpha ecaudis were the dominants. The extreme rotifer dominance and lack of cladocerans in the limnetic zone were likely the result of Chaoborus predation. A pronounced mid-summer decline in cladoceran biomass in the littoral was likely due to predation by T. prasinus and Utricularia (bladderwort).  相似文献

Over 30 years after drainage for agriculture, a 2700 ha temporary marshland was recently restored in Doñana National Park. We describe the recovery of zooplankton communities (copepods, cladocerans and rotifers) in 47 new temporary ponds excavated as part of the restoration project during the first two hydroperiods (April 2006 and 2007), and compare them to those of eight reference sites in the surrounding marshland. Major changes in the species composition and abundance occurred in new ponds between years. While rotifers and cyclopoid copepods dominated in terms of number of individuals in 2006, calanoid copepods and cladocerans were the most abundant groups in 2007. Rotifer species richness was significantly lower in 2007, but there was an increase in Simpson and β-diversity in 2007 owing largely to a dramatic decline in the abundance of Hexarthra cf. fennica (rare in reference sites) from 93% of all rotifer individuals in new ponds in 2006 to only 32% in 2007. In contrast, species richness of copepods and cladocerans was significantly higher in new ponds in 2007, but there were no changes in Simpson diversity. β-Diversity of cladocerans was also significantly higher in 2007. In 2006, the species richness of cladocera and copepods was significantly lower in new ponds than in reference sites, but by 2007 there were no differences in richness or Simpson diversity. Overall, 7 copepod, 13 cladoceran and 26 rotifer taxa were recorded in new ponds, including 80% of taxa recorded in reference sites. These results indicate that zooplankton communities can be rapidly restored in Mediterranean temporary wetlands, at least when large source populations in the surrounding area reduce dispersal limitation. They also illustrate the importance of comparing different metrics of richness and diversity in studies of zooplankton restoration.  相似文献

Pelagic rotifer plankton was studied in four stratified lakes with different degrees of human impact from June to July 2001 and throughout 2002. Rotifer species diversity was closely correlated to temperature and oxygen concentration (correlation coefficients were 0.90 and 0.87, respectively) in the water column of the hypertrophic Lake Kruglik. In the mesotrophic lakes, the correlation coefficients were much lower and their reduction was related to decreasing human impact on the lakes. Species richness was similar in Lakes Kruglik and S. Volos, but the spatial structure of the community differed greatly. The maximum rotifer density was observed in the epilimnion of Lake Kruglik, with densities dropping sharply towards the hypolimnion. In the mesotrophic lakes, the highest rotifer density was recorded in the meta- and hypolimnion. A comparative analysis of the morphometric characteristics of Keratella cochlearis showed that (1)␣the lorica length of ovigerous females increased in all four lakes with decreasing temperature; (2) the shortest lorica length was in Lake Kruglik at the same temperature; (3) in the mesotrophic lakes a significant increase in lorica length occurred as the temperature decreased from 14.2 °C to 4.2 °C. There is the similar relationship in rotifers of the genus Filinia. Hypoxia in the clino- and hypolimnion of Lake Kruglik reduced the diversity of spatial niches created by thermal stratification. As a result, the number of non-overlapping niches for rotifers in Lake Kruglik is reduced by a factor of 2–5 compared to that in mesotrophic lakes, but the mean value of the overlapping index is significantly higher.  相似文献

Worldwide, there have been few comparative studies on rotifer communities in subtropical lakes. We studied changes in rotifer community structure over 1 year and its relationship to several physicochemical variables in five subtropical shallow lakes in East China, covering a nutrient gradient from mesotrophy to moderate eutrophy. In these lakes, the genera Brachionus, Lecane, and Trichocerca dominated the rotifer species composition, and Polyarthra dolichoptera, Keratella cochlearis, Filinia longiseta, T. pusilla, and Anuraeopsis fissa were the dominant species. With increased nutrient loading, total rotifer abundance and species dominance increased, indicating that rotifer abundance might be a more sensitive indicator of trophic state than species composition. Comparative analyses of the six rotifer community indices calculated in this study and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the two slightly eutrophic lakes and the other two moderately eutrophic lakes exhibited a high degree similarity in community structure. This suggests that the trophic state of a lake determines the rotifer community structure. In contrast, in the two moderately eutrophic lakes, the mass ratios of TN:TP and the contents of TP suggested N-limitation and cyanobacteria dominance in phytoplankton communities might be possible. In these lakes TN played a more important role in shaping the rotifer community according to stepwise multiple regression and RDA. RDA analysis also suggested that rotifer species distribution was strongly associated with trophic state and water temperature, with water temperature being the most important factor in determining seasonality.  相似文献

We used mesocosms to analyze predation impacts on the prey populations and prey community structures by two cyclopoid copepod species, the larger Mesocyclops pehpeiensis and the smaller Thermocyclops taihokuensis, who coexist with small-sized herbivorous zooplankton species in a fish-abundant lake. The overall predation impact on the prey populations was stronger for Mesocyclops than for Thermocyclops. Mesocyclops had a strong and less selective impact on the rotifer community but a selective impact on the crustaceans. In contrast, Thermocyclops had a selective predation impact on rotifers but a weak and less selective impact on the crustacean community. As a result, the former predator reduced the diversity of the crustacean community but not the rotifer community, while the latter had an opposite impact on the diversities of the two communities. It has been suggested that fish induce development of a zooplankton community dominated by the small-sized zooplankton species in fish-abundant lakes. Our results demonstrated that cyclopoid copepods altered species composition and diversity of the small-sized zooplankton community in such lakes. Thus, the results have given an important suggestion on the role of the invertebrate predator cyclopoid copepods, which often coexist with fish, that they determine population dynamics and community structures of small-sized zooplankton in fish-abundant lakes.  相似文献
