This paper investigates a recently proposed dynamic hybrid RANS-LES framework using a general-purpose finite-volume flow solver. The new method is highly generalized, allowing coupling of any selected RANS model with any selected LES model and containing no explicit grid dependence in its formulation. Selected results are presented for three test cases: two-dimensional channel flow, backward facing step, and a nozzle flow relevant to biomedical applications. Comparison with experimental and DNS data, and with other hybrid RANS-LES approaches, highlights the advantages of the new method and suggests that further investigation is warranted.  相似文献

This study compares experimental measurements and numerical simulations of liquid droplets over heated (to a near surface temperature of 423 K) and unheated cylinders. The numerical model is based on an unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) formulation using a stochastic separated flow (SSF) approach for the droplets that includes submodels for droplet dispersion, heat and mass transfer, and impact on a solid surface. The details of the droplet impact model are presented and the model is used to simulate water spray impingement on a cylinder. Computational results are compared with experimental measurements using phase Doppler interferometry (PDI). Overall, good agreement is observed between predictions and experimental measurements of droplet mean size and velocity downstream of the cylinder.  相似文献

Numerous comparisons between Reynolds‐averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) and large‐eddy simulation (LES) modeling have already been performed for a large variety of turbulent flows in the context of fully deterministic flows, that is, with fixed flow and model parameters. More recently, RANS and LES have been separately assessed in conjunction with stochastic flow and/or model parameters. The present paper performs a comparison of the RANS k ? ε model and the LES dynamic Smagorinsky model for turbulent flow in a pipe geometry subject to uncertain inflow conditions. The influence of the experimental uncertainties on the computed flow is analyzed using a non‐intrusive polynomial chaos approach for two flow configurations (with or without swirl). Measured quantities including an estimation of the measurement error are then compared with the statistical representation (mean value and variance) of their RANS and LES numerical approximations in order to check whether experiment/simulation discrepancies can be explained within the uncertainty inherent to the studied configuration. The statistics of the RANS prediction are found in poor agreement with experimental results when the flow is characterized by a strong swirl, whereas the computationally more expensive LES prediction remains statistically well inside the measurement intervals for the key flow quantities.Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Among the various hybrid methodologies, Speziale's very large eddy simulation (VLES) is one that was proposed very early. It is a unified simulation approach that can change seamlessly from Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) to direct numerical simulation (DNS) depending on the numerical resolution. The present study proposes a new improved variant of the original VLES model. The advantages are achieved in two ways: (i) RANS simulation can be recovered near the wall which is similar to the detached eddy simulation concept; (ii) a LES subgrid scale model can be reached by the introduction of a third length scale, that is, the integral turbulence length scale. Thus, the new model can provide a proper LES mode between the RANS and DNS limits. This new methodology is implemented in the standard k ? ? model. Applications are conducted for the turbulent channel flow at Reynolds number of Reτ = 395, periodic hill flow at Re = 10,595, and turbulent flow past a square cylinder at Re = 22,000. In comparison with the available experimental data, DNS or LES, the new VLES model produces better predictions than the original VLES model. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the new method is quite efficient in resolving the large flow structures and can give satisfactory predictions on a coarse mesh. One of the most important and challenging topics in the Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent flows is the connection of the LES technique to the well known and largely used RANS approach where the Navier–Stokes equations are Reynolds averaged. The hybridation of LES and RANS is not only important for its possible practical use, (a rational use of the computational means in different zones), but also from a theoretical point of view, and one possible procedure consists of blending RANS and LES models in the transition zone. In this paper a new filtering technique based on blending filters which transitions smoothly between LES and RANS is proposed and the associated universal model for the subgrid scale stresses is derived. A new methodology for modeling and simulation of reactive flows is reported in which a 3D formulation of the Linear Eddy Model (LEM3D) is used as a post-processing tool for an initial RANS simulation. In this hybrid approach, LEM3D complements RANS with unsteadiness and small-scale resolution in a computationally efficient manner. To demonstrate the RANS-LEM3D model, the hybrid model is applied to a lifted turbulent N2-diluted hydrogen jet flame in a vitiated co-flow of hot products from lean H2/air combustion. In the present modeling approach, mean-flow information from RANS provides model input to LEM3D, which returns the scalar statistics needed for more accurate mixing and reaction calculations. Flame lift-off heights and flame structure are investigated in detail, along with other characteristics not available from RANS alone, such as the instantaneous and detailed species profiles and small-scale mixing.  相似文献

Fundamental research on vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of a circular cylinder is still needed to build more rational VIV analysis tools for slender marine structures. Numerical results are presented for the response of an elastically mounted rigid cylinder at low mass damping constrained to oscillate transversely to a free stream. A two-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) code equipped with the SST kω turbulence model is applied for the numerical calculations. The numerical results are compared in detail with recent experimental and computational work. The Reynolds-averaging procedure erases the random disturbances in the vortex shedding process, so that the comparison between experimental data and the numerical results obtained by RANS codes may reveal some random characteristics of the VIV response. How random disturbance affects the observation in the experiments is discussed in this paper and the issues influencing the appearance of the upper branch in experiments are especially investigated. The absence of the upper branch in RANS simulations is explained in depth on account of discrepancies, which exist between experiments and RANS simulations. In addition, the formation of the 2P vortex shedding mode and its transition through the lock-in region are well reproduced in this investigation.  相似文献

We present a novel approach to hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS)/ large eddy simulation (LES) wall modeling based on function enrichment, which overcomes the common problem of the RANS-LES transition and enables coarse meshes near the boundary. While the concept of function enrichment as an efficient discretization technique for turbulent boundary layers has been proposed in an earlier article by Krank & Wall (A new approach to wall modeling in LES of incompressible flow via function enrichment. J Comput Phys. 2016;316:94-116), the contribution of this work is a rigorous derivation of a new multiscale turbulence modeling approach and a corresponding discontinuous Galerkin discretization scheme. In the near-wall area, the Navier-Stokes equations are explicitly solved for an LES and a RANS component in one single equation. This is done by providing the Galerkin method with an independent set of shape functions for each of these two methods; the standard high-order polynomial basis resolves turbulent eddies, where the mesh is sufficiently fine and the enrichment automatically computes the ensemble-averaged flow if the LES mesh is too coarse. As a result of the derivation, the RANS model is applied solely to the RANS degrees of freedom, which effectively prevents the typical issue of a log-layer mismatch in attached boundary layers. As the full Navier-Stokes equations are solved in the boundary layer, spatial refinement gradually yields wall-resolved LES with exact boundary conditions. Numerical tests show the outstanding characteristics of the wall model regarding grid independence, superiority compared to equilibrium wall models in separated flows, and achieve a speed-up by two orders of magnitude compared to wall-resolved LES.  相似文献

Xiao and Jenny (2012) proposed an interesting hybrid LES/RANS method in which they use two solvers and solve the RANS and LES equations in the entire computational domain. In the present work this method is simplified and used as a hybrid RANS-LES method, a wall-modeled LES. The two solvers are employed in the entire domain. Near the walls, the flow is governed by the steady RANS solver; drift terms are added to the DES equations to ensure that the time-averaged DES fields agree with the steady RANS field. Away from the walls, the flow is governed by the DES solver; in this region, the RANS field is set to the time-averaged LES field. The disadvantage of traditional DES models is that the RANS models in the near-wall region – which originally were developed and tuned for steady RANS – are used as URANS models where a large part of the turbulence is resolved. In the present method – where steady RANS is used in the near-wall region – the RANS turbulence models are used in a context for which they were developed. In standard DES methods, the near-wall accuracy can be degraded by the unsteady agitation coming from the LES region. It may in the present method be worth while to use an accurate, advanced RANS model. The EARSM model is used in the steady RANS solver. The new method is called NZ S-DES . It is found to substantially improve the predicting capability of the standard DES. A great advantage of the new model is that it is insensitive to the location of the RANS-LES interface.  相似文献

In this work, a general inelastic framework for the derivation of general three-dimensional thermomechanical constitutive laws for materials undergoing phase transformations is proposed. The proposed framework is based on the generalized plasticity theory and on some basic elements from the theory of continuum damage mechanics. More specifically, a new elaborate formulation of generalized plasticity theory capable of accommodating the multiple and interacting loading mechanisms, which occur during the phase transformations, is developed. Furthermore, the stiffness variations occurring during phase transformations are taken into account by the proposed framework. For this purpose, the free energy is decomposed into elastic and inelastic parts, not in a conventional way, but in one which resembles the elastic-damage cases. Also, a rate-dependent version of the theory is provided. The concepts presented are applied for the derivation of a three-dimensional thermomechanical constitutive model for Shape Memory Alloy materials. Numerical simulations to show qualitatively the ability of the model to capture the behavior of the shape memory alloys are also presented. Furthermore, the model has been fitted to actual experimental results from the literature.  相似文献

A numerical approach to model 3D impact scenarios on concrete structures is presented and validated by experimental investigations. Special focus is given to dynamic contact modeling of an impactor loading a concrete plate at very high velocity. In this context, the main aspect is the elimination of non-physical oscillations of the kinematic fields by using an updated Newmark integration scheme. Two Lagrangian multipliers are used for this update which successfully reduces the unphysical oscillations of the above mentioned fields. In a further step, the material behavior of concrete is described by the microplane model introducing a new rate-dependent non-local damage formulation. Using the equivalent strain as a non-local field, the method is able to model, in an adequate manner so that the crack pattern in concrete is represented by the damage evolution in case of transient problems. The accuracy is validated and proved by the help of benchmark simulations as well as the observed phenomena to experimental investigations.  相似文献

A complementary experimental and computational study of the flow field evoked by a plasma actuator mounted on a flat plate was in focus of the present work. The main objective of the experimental investigation was the determination of the vector force imparted by the plasma actuator to the fluid flow. The force distribution was presently extracted from the Navier–Stokes equations directly by feeding them with the velocity field measured by a PIV technique. Assuming a steady-in-mean, two-dimensional flow with zero-pressure gradient, the imbalance between the convective term and the momentum equation’s right-hand-side terms reveals the desired resulting force. This force-distribution database was used afterwards as the source term in the momentum equation. Furthermore, an empirical model formulation for the volume-force determination parameterized by the underlying PIV-based model is derived. The model is tested within the RANS framework in order to predict a wall jet-like flow induced by a plasma actuator. The Reynolds equations are closed by a near-wall second-moment closure model based on the homogeneous dissipation rate of the kinetic energy of turbulence. The computationally obtained velocity field is analysed along with the experimental data focussing on the wall jet flow region in proximity of the plasma actuator. For comparison purposes, different existing phenomenological models were applied to evaluate the new model’s accuracy. The comparative analysis of all applied models demonstrates the strength of the new empirical model, particularly within the plasma domain. In addition, the presently formulated empirical model was applied to the flow in a three-dimensional diffuser whose inflow was modulated by a pair of streamwise vortices generated by the present plasma actuator. The direct comparison with existing experimental data of Grundmann et al. (2011) demonstrated that the specific decrease of the diffuser pressure corresponding to the continuous forcing was predicted correctly.  相似文献

A constitutive model of thermo-mechanically coupled finite strain plasticity considering martensitic phase transformation is presented. The model is formulated within a thermodynamic framework, giving a physically sound format where the thermodynamic mechanical and chemical forces that drive the phase transformation are conveniently identifiable. The phase fraction is treated through an internal variable approach and the first law of thermodynamics allows a consistent treatment of the internal heat generation due to dissipation of inelastic work. The model is calibrated against experimental data on a Ni–Cr steel of AISI304-type, allowing illustrative simulations to be performed. It becomes clear that the thermal effects considered in the present formulation have a significant impact on the material behavior. This is seen, not least, in the effects found on forming limit diagrams, also considered in the present paper.  相似文献

A new hybrid RANS/LES approach with scale-adaptive capabilities is developed. The blending function in the SST model is adopted to prevent the invasion of the von Karman length scale to the RANS region, and the compressibility correction proposed by Wilcox is incorporated to produce a realistic shear layer development in compressible flows. The new model is validated for a subcritical flow past a circular cylinder and a supersonic base flow. Time-averaged turbulent statistics predicted by the new model show fairly good agreement with the experimental data, slight improvements over DES simulations, and are much better than SAS results. The main advantage of the new model over the DES method is that the distribution of the blending function reflects local vortex structures instead of grid spacing in the turbulent wake. The sequence of the effect intensity of the compressibility correction from strong to weak is SAS, the new model and DES.  相似文献

Detached-eddy simulation (DES) is well understood in thin boundary layers, with the turbulence model in its Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) mode and flattened grid cells, and in regions of massive separation, with the turbulence model in its large-eddy simulation (LES) mode and grid cells close to isotropic. However its initial formulation, denoted DES97 from here on, can exhibit an incorrect behavior in thick boundary layers and shallow separation regions. This behavior begins when the grid spacing parallel to the wall Δ becomes less than the boundary-layer thickness δ, either through grid refinement or boundary-layer thickening. The grid spacing is then fine enough for the DES length scale to follow the LES branch (and therefore lower the eddy viscosity below the RANS level), but resolved Reynolds stresses deriving from velocity fluctuations (“LES content”) have not replaced the modeled Reynolds stresses. LES content may be lacking because the resolution is not fine enough to fully support it, and/or because of delays in its generation by instabilities. The depleted stresses reduce the skin friction, which can lead to premature separation. For some research studies in small domains, Δ is made much smaller than δ, and LES content is generated intentionally. However for natural DES applications in useful domains, it is preferable to over-ride the DES limiter and maintain RANS behavior in boundary layers, independent of Δ relative to δ. For this purpose, a new version of the technique – referred to as DDES, for Delayed DES – is presented which is based on a simple modification to DES97, similar to one proposed by Menter and Kuntz for the shear–stress transport (SST) model, but applicable to other models. Tests in boundary layers, on a single and a multi-element airfoil, a cylinder, and a backward-facing step demonstrate that RANS function is indeed maintained in thick boundary layers, without preventing LES function after massive separation. The new formulation better fulfills the intent of DES. Two other issues are discussed: the use of DES as a wall model in LES of attached flows, in which the known log-layer mismatch is not resolved by DDES; and a correction that is helpful at low cell Reynolds numbers.  相似文献

Transition Modelling for General Purpose CFD Codes   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The paper addresses modelling concepts based on the RANS equations for laminar-turbulent transition prediction in general-purpose CFD codes. Available models are reviewed, with emphasis on their compatibility with modern CFD methods. Requirements for engineering transition models suitable for industrial CFD codes are specified. A new concept for transition modeling is introduced. It is based on the combination of experimental correlations with locally formulated transport equations. The concept is termed LCTM – Local Correlation-based Transition Model. An LCTM model, which satisfies most of the specified requirements is described, including results for a variety of different complex applications. An incremental approach was used to validate the model, first on 2D flat plates and airfoils and then on to progressively more complicated test cases such as a three-element flap, a 3D transonic wing and a full helicopter configuration. In all cases good agreement with the available experimental data was observed. The authors believe that the current formulation is a significant step forward in engineering transition modeling, as it allows the combination of transition correlations with general purpose CFD codes. There is a strong potential that the model will allow the 1st order effects of transition to be included in everyday industrial CFD simulations.  相似文献

In this work, a continuum based model of the magnetic field induced phase transformation (FIPT) for magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMA) is developed. Hysteretic material behaviors are considered through the introduction of internal state variables. A Gibbs free energy is proposed using group invariant theory and the coupled constitutive equations are derived in a thermodynamically consistent way. An experimental procedure of FIPT in NiMnCoIn MSMA single crystals, which can operate under high blocking stress, is described. The model is then reduced to a 1-D form and the material parameter identification from the experimental results is discussed. Model predictions of magneto-thermo-mechanical loading conditions are presented and compared to experiments.  相似文献
