Finding Time

What has our sense of the acceleration of time got to bear on our experience of cities? How might it be consciously countered by architects ‘finding time’ through ‘thoughtful design and measured observation’. ‘A self-declared ‘cultural polymath’, Tim Makower is the founder of Makower Architects. A partner at Allies and Morrison for many years, he has significant experience in leading large-scale projects, ranging from the King's Cross Masterplan in London to the Old Doha Regeneration Framework, which he draws on here and in his book Touching the City: Thoughts on Urban Scale (Wiley, 2014).     

The Architectural Detail and the Fear of Commitment

Mark Burry holds a unique position in architecture, straddling the worlds of practice and academia as Senior Architect to the Temple Sagrada Família in Barcelona and as Professor at RMIT in Melbourne, where he is Founding Director of the RMIT Design Research Institute. In his Counterpoint to this issue of AD, he puts the spotlight back on construction, asking whether the detail could be in danger of falling victim to an inadvertent and ‘massive separation of design from making’. As he states: ‘to detail effectively is to understand not only what the building “is”, but how it will be made’.     

Artists of the Floating World: SANNA,Niedermayr and the Construction of Atmosphere

Hugh Campbell expands upon the mutually collaborative spatial qualities evoked in the photographic works of Walter Niedermayr and the architecture of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa of Tokyo-based practice SANAA. Describing their relation as forming a ‘thickened presence’, he alludes to a particular atmosphere reliant on an ambiguity of scale, detail and discernible proximity that serves to liberate the architecture and the photographs from mere documentation whereby instead they figure as transparent recordings of spatial intentions. Here, Peter Carl substitutes the term ‘type’ for the typical, and ‘typology’ for typicality. In so doing he frees up the notion of type for contemporary design, liberating it from the strictures of its performance history and precedents that have often veered towards standardisation.

It's in Your Nature: I'm Lost in Paris

R&Sie(n)'s installation I'm Lost in Paris (2008), a disturbing take on the ecological house, epitomises the preoccupation of the French architect François Roche with the contradictions of modern nature. Javier Arbona tracks how Roche's notion of nature as ‘a partly human artifice’ which is both alien and personalised play out in his various projects, capitulating between attempts at overcoming alienation and heightening it. The Problem of Scale

Sean Godsell has built an international reputation on designing finely crafted houses in southeast Australia for which he draws all the details by hand. Here he explains how landing the commission for the Design Hub, a new postgraduate design research centre for RMIT in Melbourne, required a shift in scale and also a change in working conditions as he encountered new production processes and levels of regulation. Maintaining the character of the building as something ‘made’ rather than produced was a sustained battle.     

Architecture + Textiles = Architextiles

A hybrid term, ‘architextiles’ encompasses a wide range of projects and ways of thinking that unite architecture and textiles. By way of introduction to this issue, guest-editor Mark Garcia highlights the significant rise of interest in this confluence by theorists, architects, engineers, textile designers, materials scientists and artists. Beirut-born architect and writer Tony Chakar describes how the July 2006 Israeli attacks on Beirut prompted memories of the Lebanese War and provided the essential catalyst for producing his work The Eighth Day. Careful not to stipulate prescribed meanings, Chakar delivers the series of images as a lecture that provide luminosity in ‘the space of catastrophe’ where ‘language is undone’. We Will Be Making Active Form

In response to the relative redundancy of architect-designed buildings and the proliferation of commercial structures that are rolled out to a highly formulaic spatial format across the world's cities, Keller Easterling advocates a new architecture of ‘active form’. These active forms potentially perform as ‘verbs’ rather than ‘nouns’ to the city's activities, providing ‘the means by which the field changes’ and the ‘repertoire for how it plays’.     

Customised ‘Care-Ready’ Living: A HAPPI-Inspired Design for Evolutionary Housing by Walter Menteth Wren Architects

In 2013, Walter Menteth Architects entered the 2013 Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Re-imagine Ageing Design Competition with an entry that focused on the delivery of customised housing to suit individual specifications. Here Walter Menteth , a director of the practice, describes the research the office undertook as part of the project and how it led to a solution that radically questioned the current procurement process for development-led retirement housing by proposing a new, distinctively ‘branded’ delivery vehicle that improves access to consumers while expanding buyer choice and engagement.     

The Poetics of the Island of Vessels

Since 2000, Neil Spiller has been engaged on a ‘long project’: a series of hundreds of drawings that through a potent mix of cyborgian fantasy and Surrealism, imbued with poetry and biotechnology, evoke a psycho-geographical island inhabited by an irascible alter ego, ‘The Professor’. Spiller seeks out in this work ‘an unusual and startling architecture’ that reveals a ‘loving, enigmatic and ragged beauty’.     

Madhura Prematilleke (Team Architrave)

Madhura Prematilleke practises with his colleagues at Team Architrave in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and considers himself an Asian Modernist in search of what he calls a ‘robust architecture’ that ‘can accommodate - and indeed thrive upon - the manner in which it is used, misused or otherwise “Asianised”’. This view of Modernism stems from the fact that, as Prematilleke explains, ‘in a cultural landscape such as ours in Sri Lanka - where urban contexts are chaotic, tastes are wildly heterogeneous, and usage of buildings abrasive, Modernism, in particular, with its aspirations of purity and lucidity, is hardly able to cope’. The Reluctant Architect: An Interview with Wang Shu of Amateur Architects Studio

On the announcement of the awarding of the Pritzker Prize to the first Chinese architect, Wang Shu, in May 2012, jury chair Lord Palumbo commended him for an architecture that is ‘timeless, deeply rooted in its context and yet universal’. Visiting Wang and his work in the ancient city of Hangzhou in Eastern China, shortly afterwards Edward Denison and Guang Yu Ren sought to understand why Wang might have succeeded where other architects have failed in a Chinese and international context, forging an innovative approach to architecture, which is in tune with tradition while being of a ‘genuine and often sublime originality’.     

Distructuring Utopias

In order to meet the challenges of fast-paced urban transformations, Laurent-Paul Robert and Dr Vesna Petresin Robert of Rubedo call for a rethinking of the perennial Utopian model of urban design. They espouse a design strategy that is both able ‘to reflect the dynamics of urban growth and decay’, while meeting the needs of a ‘post-capitalist economy’ - a condition in which change is the only constant.
