Urbanization of a catchment often causes degeneration of rivers. We studied the water quality of three rivers in Addis Ababa based on the impact of stormwater and non‐point sources, and urbanization. Along these rivers several point sources were registered, with direct discharge of industrial and domestic wastes into them. To distinguish the impact of these year‐round point‐sources from stormwater, we analysed physicochemical parameters, nutrients and heavy metals sampled from upstream to downstream sections of each river in the dry and wet season. Dissolved oxygen (DO), NO2–N, NH4–N, PO4–P, (Cr(VI) and Cu) exceeded international standards, pointing to a generally poor water quality of the rivers in both seasons. NO3–N, Mn and Zn were problematic in dry season only. Although stormwater improved DO, conductivity, PO4–P, Cr(VI) and Zn, the levels were still critical, pointing to construction sites, agriculture and pit latrines, somewhat offsetting the effect of stormwater dilution. No clear impact of urbanization pressure was found.  相似文献

Water quality and uses of the Bangpakong River (eastern Thailand)   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The Bangpakong River is the most important watershed in the Eastern part of Thailand. Water quality parameters were sampled from June 1998 through May 1999 at 11 sites along a 227 km gradient, covering the wet season (June-November) and the dry season (December-May). Surface water was collected at three different stations per site (close to the banks and in the middle of the river), and analyzed for temperature, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, suspended solids, pH. ammonia, fecal coliforms, biochemical oxygen demand and chemical oxygen demand as well as conductivity, phosphate, and heavy metals. The Scottish water quality index (WQI) was adaptated to the tropical environment. The averaged WQI was low (41%) and quality declined significantly during the dry season (ANOVA, p<0.001). Although the quality rose somewhat at middle sites, only 27% of the WQI values during wet season and 2.5% during dry season were higher than 50%, denoting poor environmental quality. Within each season, the main sources of variability were the differences between sites along the gradient (48% during the wet season, 63% during the dry season), whereas monthly variability represented less than 20% of the variability. The seasonal results show that the river is suitable only for tolerant fish and wildlife species and is of doubtful use for potable water supply during the dry season. As quality improves during the wet period, water can be used for the production of potable water, but only with advanced treatment, and for indirect and noncontact recreational activities. In the middle stretches of the river, higher water quality permits multiple uses at moderate cost.  相似文献

Surveys of five rivers in a hot-humid zone of a tropical country (Nigeria) were carried out over 3 years by obtaining samples for physical, chemical and bacteriological analyses. The main characteristics monitored were temperature, turbidity, total, dissolved and suspended solids, pH, dissolved oxygen, BOD, ammonia-nitrogen and the coliform counts. In addition, the main characteristics of the liquid waste being discharged into the rivers were determined.During the dry season, the highest mean temperature is 29°C with a range of 5°C and the lowest is 26°C with a range of 3°C. In the wet season, the highest mean temperature is 27.3°C with a range of 2°C while the lowest is 24.5°C with a range of 1°C. The other characteristics vary more widely with seasons. The high temperature in these rivers all the year round encourages pollution by human activities. During the dry season, pollution causes prolific algae boom, which causes oxygen supersaturation during periods of high temperature and abundant sunlight. The physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the rivers deteriorate sharply as they flow through towns and other human communities.  相似文献

Artisanal gold mining (AGM) with metallic mercury has a long history in Ghana. It is believed to be over 2,000 years old. Today, AGM has escalated in a new dimension consuming about half of the country where gold lode deposits exist along riverbanks or rivers are alluvial-gold rich. The Pra River in southwestern Ghana is a site of on going application of metallic mercury in prospecting gold, and this paper examines mercury (Hg) contamination in the different environmental compartments in its watershed. Samples of water, sediment, soil and biota (i.e., human hair and fish) were collected from locations along the course of the river during the rainy and dry seasons of 2002 and 2003, respectively. Besides the obvious Hg point sources along the Pra and its tributaries, the obtained results show that Hg levels and speciation in the studied aquatic system are controlled by precipitation, which drives the hydrology and differences in flow regimes versus seasons. The seasonal difference in Hg speciation suggests that methyl mercury (MeHg) found in the aqueous phase and riverine sediments is likely of terrestrial origin where its production is favored during the rainy season by high soil water and organic matter content. The use of the enrichment factor (EF) for the assessment of sediment quality indicated moderate to severe contamination of surface sediments in the rainy season, while in the dry season, the EF index indicates nearly no pollution of surface sediments. Accordingly, most of the Hg introduced into this river system is likely transported to depositional downstream terminal basins (e.g. the river delta and the Gulf of Guinea). With regard to biota, Hg measured in hair in the dry period was higher than data obtained on samples collected during the wet period. This could be explained at least in part by the shift in diet as a result of abundance of fish in the local markets and the concurrent increase and more active fishing during the dry season. Mercury data obtained on a very limited number of fish samples collected during the dry period only are also presented.  相似文献

A small peatland catchment in eastern Finland was monitored for runoff and export of dissolved organic carbon. To exemplify the response of a peatland under years of different meteorological conditions, data from one very dry and one wet growing season are presented. Runoff was 194 and 387 mm, and DOC export was 4.2 and 11.3 gC m− 2 in the dry and wet year respectively. Analysis of the hydrographs showed that in both years most runoff and DOC export was generated during peak flow events, with low baseflow in the intermediate periods. Runoff response to rain events was strongest under a high water table in the spring and autumn, with a summer runoff minimum. The effect of drought on runoff occurred only after mid June when the effects of snowmelt had dissipated. Snowmelt therefore dominated DOC export in the dry year (61%) but contributed much less (29%) in the wet year. The relationship between runoff and the water table was highly similar in both years. Any variation that was observed herein was potentially related to a superficial subsidence of the peat surface under drier summer conditions and to raised spring water levels, causing restricted drainage due to flooding. The observed variation of DOC concentrations in both years generally had a limited impact on DOC export. During peak runoff events, concentrations dropped proportionally to the magnitude of the events. This decrease in available DOC is argued to be caused by a dominance of leaching over supply and production and by the specific hydraulic characteristics of the peatland surface. DOC concentrations were some 25% higher under drought conditions. These elevated concentrations were dispelled by spring snowmelt of the next year, demonstrating that a winter snowpack in boreal regions may be instrumental in limiting the longer term hydrological and biochemical effects of a drought.  相似文献

The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs =p,p'DDT, p,p'DDD, p,p'DDE, alpha-HCH and gamma-HCH) were measured in the sediments, water and burbot (whole liver and liver lipids) of eight Russian Arctic rivers near their outflows to the Arctic Ocean between 1988 and 1994. DDT was not detected in any river sediments above the limit of quantification (LOQ) of 2.5 ng g(-1) dry wt. Concentrations of DDD and DDE were only found in three of the river sediments above the LOQ of 0.75 ng g(-1) dry wt. DDT and DDE were present in only North Dvina and Pechora river water above the LOQ of 5 ng l(-1), while DDD was not found in any river above this limit. Both alpha- and gamma-HCH were found in all river sediments except for the Kolyma River at concentrations up to 2.4 and 3.5 ng g(-1) dry wt., respectively. In river water, alpha-HCH was as high as 8.6 ng l(-1) in the Ob River and gamma-HCH as high as 7.6 ng l(-1) in the Pechora River. The concentration of both sigmaDDT and sigmaHCH decreased to LOQ levels by about 1992 in both water and sediments. sigmaDDT (up to 70 ng g(-1) wet wt.) and sigmaHCH (maximum 18 ng g(-1) wet wt.) in burbot livers followed a similar temporal trend as in water and sediments. There is a scarcity of OCP data for Russia, but from what is available, we conclude that: (1) contamination of Russian rivers and burbot by OCPs is less severe in the Arctic than at lower latitudes; (2) contamination of Russian Arctic burbot is comparable to, or lower than, similar OCP contamination measured in burbot and other fish in other countries; and (3) the OCP concentrations in Russian burbot pose a negligible health risk to either humans or wildlife.  相似文献

Regression models are proposed for accurate estimation of storm runoff load. Regression equations are obtained for the relationship between final cumulative load and flow during direct runoff by each storm event. The models are applied to estimate annual nutrients load by all influent rivers into the Lake Kasumigaura for a model year of average annual rainfall. The load in dry weather is calculated from observed data of all influent rivers. Total annual load for a year is the sum of loads in dry weather days and loads in wet weather days. The ratios of the load in a wet weather day to total annual loads are 29 percent for T‐N, 51 percent for T‐P, 53 percent for T‐COD, 22 percent for D‐N, 22 percent for D‐P and 30 percent for D‐COD.  相似文献

Distribution patterns of epilithic diatom assemblages in streams in northeastern Spain and their relation to different environmental gradients are presented. Thirty-five sites were sampled covering a wide range of fluvial typologies. Gradient analysis was used to analyze the community structure and the major ecological gradients underlying variation in species composition. Two major gradients were evident; the first was a complex gradient from oligotrophic, pristine, fast-flowing highland rivers to mainly eutrophic rivers of low elevation; and the second related to altitudinal and seasonal variation of temperature. Two sets of factors were evident; one was associated with water chemistry, and the other to seasonal and physiographical variation. Variance partitioning allowed the separation of the effects of the different sets of environmental parameters. The contribution of physiography and water chemistry to diatom distribution was more unclear when the level of disturbance was intermediate. Considering the relatively high proportion of variation explained by physiographical variables alone, we suggest that when using diatoms to evaluate water quality, ecoregional characteristics of river stretches should also be considered.  相似文献

A comprehensive water quality monitoring program was conducted in the Yeongsan (YS) River, Korea from 2005 to present to investigate wet and dry weather pollutant discharge in an attempt to establish point and non-point pollution management strategies. As part of this monitoring program, 11 heavy metal species were measured during dry and wet weather conditions in the YS River, where Gwangju City (GJ), a subcatchment of the YS River, was further monitored to clarify the responsibility of different metal species discharged into the mainstream. Monthly grab water samples showed that greater amounts of metals along the YS River were discharged during the wet summer months due largely to storm runoff. In addition, further monitoring results revealed that GJ, a highly urbanized area, was a significant contributor of the heavy metals being discharged into the YS River during both wet and dry weather. The most abundant metal species discharged from GJ were manganese, aluminum and iron with different contributions of wet and dry weather flows to the total discharge load. Wet weather flow was a significant contributor to the annual dissolved metal loads, accounting for 44-93% of the annual load depending on the metal species, with the exception of chromium and cadmium (9% and 27%, respectively). Mostly, metal loads during wet weather were shown to be proportional to the rainfall depth and antecedent dry period. A substantial fraction of metals were also associated with solids, suggesting that sedimentation might be an appropriate management practice for reducing the metal load generated in GJ. Overall, although dissolved metal concentrations in YS River were at an acceptable level for aquatic community protection, continual metal discharge throughout the year was considered to be a potential problem in the long-term due to gradual water quality degradation as well as continuous metal accumulation in the system.  相似文献

The wet/dry tropics of the Australian savannas are particularly prone to fire due to the highly seasonal rainfall and accumulation of grassy fuels. The effect of an early dry season wildfire (May, 1998) on the water quality of a seasonally flowing stream (December-June) was examined for a lowland savanna forest in Kakadu National Park (northern Australia) which had remained unburnt for 10 years. The water quality variables assessed were: total and volatile suspended sediment, phosphorus, nitrogen, iron and manganese. Compared to three years of pre-fire water quality data and 5 years of stream flow data, there was no detectable impact of the wildfire on the volume of stream flow, mean concentrations and the total mass transported by the stream for each water quality variable, except possibly nitrogen. The limited effect on water quality is attributed primarily to the timing of the wildfire and the low intensity relative to fires later in the dry season (September). The retention of canopy cover and the accumulation of leaf litter following the wildfire, and the catchment's gently undulating terrain all contributed to the negligible impact on water quality. Early dry season fires appear to be a viable management option for reducing accumulated fuel loads and hence reducing the risk of destructive wildfires later in the dry season.  相似文献

The performance of a constructed surface flow wetland in reducing diffuse N pollution coming from croplands is being investigated in an ongoing experiment, begun in 1998 in NE Italy. The 0.32 ha wetland is vegetated with Phragmites australis (Cav.) Trin. and Typha latifolia (L.). It receives drainage water from 6 ha of land managed for an experiment on drainage systems, where maize, sugarbeet, winter wheat and soybean are cultivated. During the period 1998-2002, the wetland received from 4698 to 8412 mm of water per year (on average, about 9 times the environmental rainfall); its water regimen was discontinuous and flooding occurred on a variable number of days per year (from 13 to 126). Nitric nitrogen was the most important form of element load. Its concentration in the inflow water over time was rather discontinuous, with median values ranging from 0.2 (in 2001) to 4.5 (in 2000) mg L(-1). Inflow nitric N concentrations were occasionally in the 5-15 mg L(-1) range. Concentrations reduced passing through the wetland, with a more evident effect in the last year. Over 5 years, the wetland received slightly more than 2000 kg ha(-1) of nitrogen, 87% in nitric form mostly from farmland drainage. The remaining 13% of N was applied as organic slurry directly onto the wetland, with 5 distributions during 1998 to assess wetland performance in treating occasional organic loads. Field drainage loads had a discontinuous time pattern and occurred mostly during autumn-winter, with the exception of the 2001-2002 season which was a very dry. The wetland discharged 206 kg ha(-1) of N, over the 5-year period, with an apparent removal efficiency of about 90%. The disappearance was mostly due to plant uptake (1110 kg ha(-1)) and soil accumulation (570 kg ha(-1)), with the contribution of denitrification being estimated at around 7%.  相似文献

Oxygenation systems, such as bubble-plume diffusers, are used to improve water quality by replenishing dissolved oxygen (DO) in the hypolimnia of water-supply reservoirs. The diffusers induce circulation and mixing, which helps distribute DO throughout the hypolimnion. Mixing, however, has also been observed to increase hypolimnetic oxygen demand (HOD) during system operation, thus accelerating oxygen depletion. Two water-supply reservoirs (Spring Hollow Reservoir (SHR) and Carvins Cove Reservoir (CCR)) that employ linear bubble-plume diffusers were studied to quantify diffuser effects on HOD. A recently validated plume model was used to predict oxygen addition rates. The results were used together with observed oxygen accumulation rates to evaluate HOD over a wide range of applied gas flow rates. Plume-induced mixing correlated well with applied gas flow rate and was observed to increase HOD. Linear relationships between applied gas flow rate and HOD were found for both SHR and CCR. HOD was also observed to be independent of bulk hypolimnion oxygen concentration, indicating that HOD is controlled by induced mixing. Despite transient increases in HOD, oxygenation caused an overall decrease in background HOD, as well as a decrease in induced HOD during diffuser operation, over several years. This suggests that the residual or background oxygen demand decreases from one year to the next. Despite diffuser-induced increases in HOD, hypolimnetic oxygenation remains a viable method for replenishing DO in thermally-stratified water-supply reservoirs such as SHR and CCR.  相似文献

A field study at the Lourens River, South Africa, was undertaken during the pesticide application period between November 2001 and January 2002 in order to investigate the potential relation of agricultural pollution to the aquatic macroinvertebrate fauna. The upper regions of the Lourens River were free of contamination (LR1), whereas subsequent stretches flowing through a 400-ha orchard area (LR2) received transient insecticide peaks. Continuously operating suspended-particle samplers as well as flood samplers operating during runoff events were used to measure pesticide contamination. In addition, various physicochemical and morphological parameters were examined. A survey of the macroinvertebrate communities associated with the rocky substrates was carried out every three weeks. Community indices were calculated using the South African Scoring System (SASS 5) for bioassessment of water quality in rivers. The two sites differed in pesticide pollution as well as in average turbidity levels (LR1 5.5 mg/L; LR2 64.3 mg/L), but were similar in bottom substrate composition and most other abiotic factors. At the downstream site (LR2), pesticide values of 0.05 microg/L azinphos-methyl in water as well as 49 microg/kg azinphos-methyl, 94 microg/kg chlorpyrifos and 122 microg/kg total endosulfan in suspended particles were found during runoff conditions. The macroinvertebrate communities of the two sampling sites were similar in terms of number of total individuals, but differed significantly (ANOVA) in average number of taxa (LR1 11.7, LR2 8.9). Seven out of 17 investigated taxa occurred in significantly reduced numbers or were even absent at the downstream site LR2. The community characteristics determined by SASS 5 showed a significantly less sensitive community structure at the downstream site (TS 41; ASPT 4.6), indicating continuously lower water quality compared to site LR1 (TS 80; ASPT 6.9). It is concluded that the Lourens River macroinvertebrate communities are affected by agricultural pollution, with pesticides and increased turbidity as the most important stressors.  相似文献

The concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) is an important indicator of water quality because aquatic life survives on the DO in water. A free overfall jet from a weir plunging into downstream water causes entrainment of air bubbles if the free overfall jet velocity exceeds a certain critical value and hence aeration occurs. This paper investigates the free overfall jets from sharp‐crested weirs and their effect on air entrainment and aeration efficiency. The results indicate that the air entrainment and aeration efficiency of triangular sharp‐crested weirs are significantly better than those for the other sharp‐crested weir types. Therefore, the triangular sharp‐crested weirs can be used as highly effective aerators in streams, rivers, constructed channels, fish hatcheries, water treatment plants, etc. Regression equations were obtained for the triangular sharp‐crested weirs relating air entrainment rate and aeration efficiency to drop height, discharge and angle in the triangular sharp‐crested weir. There was good agreement between the measured values and the values computed from the predictive equations.  相似文献

Outdoor stream mesocosm studies conducted between 1992 and 1996 at two facilities enabled the investigation of structural variability in invertebrate assemblages within and between studies. Temporal variability of benthic invertebrate assemblages between eight replicate streams within a study was assessed in a 28-day mesocosm study without chemical treatment. Cluster analysis, non-metric multidimensional scaling, and principal component analysis each showed the untreated assemblages as structurally distinct groups on the three sampling days. The assemblages between the eight replicate streams showed >88% Bray-Curtis similarity at any one time during the study. In addition, pre-treatment data from a series of four studies conducted at one facility were used to examine structural variability in the starting benthic invertebrate assemblages between studies. Invertebrate assemblages were structurally distinct at the start of each mesocosm study conducted in different years at the same facility and the taxa responsible for differences in the assemblages were also different each year. The implications of temporal and spatial variability in benthic invertebrate assemblages within and between mesocosm studies with regards to species sensitivity and study repeatability should be considered when results of such studies are used in risk assessment.  相似文献

In 1974–1976, baseline studies were carried out on the flora and macroinvertebrate fauna of the R. Kennet at two sites downstream of Marlborough (Savernake Upper and Lower) and at one site upstream of Hungerford (Littlecote). Simplified maps of each site, showing the cover of macrophytes, were obtained monthly between April 1974 and April/June 1976, and replicated quantitative samples of the macroinvertebrates were collected on the dominant macrophyte and on gravel in June 1974, and also in June and December 1975. As a consequence of two major droughts and increasing concern over water quality in the Upper Kennet in the 1990s, the studies recommenced in the summer of 1997 using the same sites and methodologies. Maps and macroinvertebrate samples were obtained in early July and December 1997 and in June of both 1998 and 1999. At the Savernake sites, mapping in summer 1997 confirmed what had been apparent for some years. That is, macrophyte cover (both Ranunculus and Schoenoplectus) was much lower than in the 1970s. In contrast, the site downstream at Littlecote retained a relatively high cover of Ranunculus, despite the drought. In late autumn 1997, phosphate stripping commenced at Marlborough Sewage Treatment Works, the drought ended and in addition, the spring of 1998 was unusually wet. Ranunculus recolonised both Savernake sites with remarkable speed by summer 1998 and retained this dominant position in 1999. Quantitative samples of macroinvertebrates collected on gravel and the dominant macrophyte at each of the three study sites indicated that there was no evidence of major loss of family richness between the 1970s and 1990s as a result of the low flows or enrichment. However, at Savernake (but not Littlecote) in summer 1997, the macroinvertebrate assemblage was affected by low flows and/or enrichment. This took the form of changes in the abundance of some families, with lentic forms being favoured in relation to some lotic families. Following the end of the drought, many macroinvertebrate families at Savernake showed a rapid response to the new conditions and the assemblages reverted to those expected in a fast-flowing cretaceous chalk stream. Continued monitoring through the next drought is advisable to provide a greater understanding of the interplay between water quality, the discharge regime, habitat quality (including macrophyte growth) and the response of the macroinvertebrate fauna.  相似文献

The partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO(2)) in surface water was surveyed monthly at 6 sampling sites along the entire length of the lower reaches of the Xijiang River, a subtropical monsoon river in China, and at the mouths of its major tributaries, over a whole hydrological year from April 2005 to March 2006, to reveal the seasonal and spatial dynamics of pCO(2). Intensive sampling and measurements were also conducted at Wuzhou gauge station in June and July to investigate the impact of floodwater on pCO(2) and to further explore the relationship between river discharge and pCO(2). The pCO(2) levels were well above atmospheric equilibrium (380 microatm) during the entire survey period with obvious seasonal and spatial variations, ranging from 600 microatm to 7200 microatm for the mainstream and from 700 to 11000 microatm for tributaries, respectively. The pattern of pCO(2) seasonal variation across 6 sites was almost consistent with each other with little difference. The pCO(2) levels in the dry season were relatively low, with relatively slight temporal and spatial fluctuations that were predominantly controlled by in situ biogenic activities. While the pCO(2) in the wet season greatly varied with river discharge, both annual maximum and minimum pCO(2) levels occurring in this period. The much higher pCO(2) in the early wet season were mainly induced by increasing baseflow and interflow that flushed significant soil CO(2) into the streams, whereas the lower pCO(2) observed after floods from July to September, some even lower than pCO(2) levels in the dry season, potentially resulted from in situ plankton blooms. The annual minima pCO(2) levels occurring in this period were caused by the dilution effect of floodwater. There was no obvious downstream trend in pCO(2) variation during the whole survey period, probably a consequence of disturbance from tributaries or spatially distinct channel characteristics and water environments. Based on measurements, we estimate that the water-to-air CO(2) flux in the lower reaches of the Xijiang River is about 8.3-15.6 Mg C ha(-1)y(-1). The role of the Xijiang River as a net source of atmospheric CO(2) is undoubted.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a monitoring and modelling programme, carried out to study the processes occurring in gully pots during dry weather. The monitoring programme involved estimation of the change in gully pot liquor quality, under field and laboratory conditions. The contents (i.e. liquor and sludge) of pots draining five different types of roads were monitored over dry periods in the winter and summer. A bench scale study was carried out to study the influence of temperature variations and sludge digestion by-products on gully liquor quality. The change in quality was measured in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO) and ammonium concentration. The trends for change in COD and DO, were found to be broadly similar for all road types. However, ammonium transformation was found to follow different patterns at different locations. Several dry weather processes, such as COD decay, ammonium transformation, oxygen depletion and uptake by sludge, oxygen transfer from the atmosphere and benthic release of COD, have been identified. Other processes, found to take place during dry weather, include development of a scum layer over the surface of the gully liquor and sludge bulking. A model is proposed which can predict the change in gully liquor quality in terms of COD, DO and ammonium concentrations. Data collected during the study has been used to successfully calibrate and verify the model.  相似文献

This paper presents a case study which describes water-availability problems and corresponding public-health implications for a rural area in Nigeria. A water-availability assessment was carried out in eight villages which are controlled by the Jalingo Local Government of Taraba State. Questionnaires were used to obtain data from sixty households (approximately 650 participants) concerning issues of water-supply sources, water quantity, water quality and community participation in water-resources projects. It was found that (i) community well water is the major source of water, (ii) 35% of the inhabitants depend on well water during the wet season, and (iii) 69% depend on it during the dry season. About 80% of the households have access to less than 30 litres of water per person per day and, because of low water availability, there is a prevalence of water-related diseases.  相似文献

Manganese (Mn) concentrations in the tea field effluent were 1.1-3.5 mg/l over a 2 year period from June 1997 to May 1998 (first water year) and June 1998 to May 1999 (second water year). The annual Mn loads were 38,000 g/ha in the first water year and 19,000 g/ha in the second. The highest Mn loads were observed, respectively, in July 1997 (10,000 g/ha) in the first water year and in June 1998 (4100 g/ha) in the second. The water-soluble Mn content of soil of the tea field increased abruptly with decreasing soil pH in the pH region below 4.5. The large Mn load from the tea field during the rainy season is likely due to application of excess fertilizer and manure before the rainy season, which may lead to acidification of the soil.  相似文献
