The effect of discharge rate of direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) on fuel efficiency was comparatively investigated using a DMFC single cell and a DMFC system. The results obtained from the single cell were used to model the DMFC system. Several semi-empirical equations were derived that relate discharge current, voltage, power output, energy density and fuel consumption for a nominal 25 W DMFC system. The decrease in fuel efficiency with decreased power output that is observed for the DMFC system is attributable to the increase of methanol crossover that can be observed for an individual cell. A DMFC system can achieve maximum energy density and fuel efficiency at an appropriately high level of power output.  相似文献

This paper is presented to investigate operational characteristics of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) stack with regard to fuel and energy efficiency, including its performance and stability under various operating conditions. Fuel efficiency of the DMFC stack is strongly dependent on fuel concentration, working temperature, current density, and anode channel configuration in the bipolar plates and noticeably increases due to the reduced methanol crossover through the membrane, as the current density increases and the methanol concentration, anode channel depth, and temperature decreases. It is, however, revealed that the energy efficiency of the DMFC stack is not always improved with increased fuel efficiency, since the reduced methanol crossover does not always indicate an increase in the power of the DMFC stack. Further, a lower methanol concentration and temperature sacrifice the power and operational stability of the stack with the large difference of cell voltages, even though the stack shows more than 90% of fuel efficiency in this operating condition. The energy efficiency is therefore a more important characteristic to find optimal operating conditions in the DMFC stack than fuel efficiency based on the methanol utilization and crossover, since it considers both fuel efficiency and cell electrical power. These efforts may contribute to commercialization of the highly efficient DMFC system, through reduction of the loss of energy and fuel.

The present work consists of a tubular-shaped direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) that is operated completely passively with methanol solution stored in a central fuel reservoir. The benefit of a tubular-shaped DMFC over a planar-shaped DMFC is the higher instantaneous volumetric power energy density (power/volume) associated with the larger active area provided by the tubular geometry. Membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) with identical compositions were installed in both tubular and planar-shaped, passive DMFCs and tested with 1, 2, and 3 M methanol solutions at room temperature. The peak power density for the tubular DMFC was 19.0 mW cm−2 and 24.5 mW cm−2 while the peak power density for the planar DMFC was 20.0 mW cm−2 and 23.0 mW cm−2 with Nafion® 212 and 115 MEAs, respectively. Even though the performance of the fuel cell improved with each increase in methanol concentration, the fuel and energy efficiencies decreased for both the tubular and planar geometries due to increased methanol crossover. The tubular DMFC experienced higher methanol crossover potentially due to a higher static fluid pressure in the anode fuel reservoir (AFR) caused by the vertical orientation of the tubular fuel reservoir. The performance of the tubular DMFC in this work represents an 870% improvement in power density from the previous best, passive, tubular DMFC found in the literature.  相似文献

Energy density and power density are two of the most significant performance indices of a fuel cell system. Both the indices are closely related to the operating conditions. Energy density, which can be derived from fuel cell efficiency, is especially important to small and portable applications. Generally speaking, power density can be easily obtained by acquiring the voltage and current density of an operating fuel cell. However, for a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), it is much more difficult to evaluate its efficiency due to fuel crossover and the complex architecture of fuel circulation. The present paper proposes a semi-empirical model for the efficiency evaluation of a DMFC under various operating conditions. The power density and the efficiency of a DMFC are depicted by explicit functions of operating temperature, fuel concentration and current density. It provides a good prediction and a clear insight into the relationship between the aforementioned performance indices and operating variables. Therefore, information including power density, efficiency, as well as remaining run-time about the status of an operating DMFC can be in situ evaluated and predicted. The resulting model can also serve as an important basis for developing real-time control strategies of a DMFC system.  相似文献

A 6‐cell silicon‐based micro direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) stack utilized the serial flow path design was developed. The effect of the structure of flow path on the performance of the stack was investigated using polarization characterization and electrochemical impedance analysis. Further, the voltage distribution for individual cells under different current density was discussed. The results indicated that the μDMFC stack with the serial flow path design exhibited better performance than that utilized the parallel flow path due to uniform mass transfer of methanol as a result of the use of the serial flow path. Such a μDMFC stack generates a peak output power of ca. 187 mW, corresponding to an average power density of ca. 21.7 mWcm‐2, and exhibits a steady‐state power output for more than 100 h. In this study, the performance characteristics of a flowing electrolyte-direct methanol fuel cell (FE-DMFC) and a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) are evaluated by computer simulations; and results are compared to experimental data found in the literature. Simulations are carried out to assess the effects of the operating parameters on the output parameters; namely, methanol concentration distribution, cell voltage, power density, and electrical efficiency of the cell. The operating parameters studied include the electrolyte flow rate, flowing electrolyte channel thickness, and methanol concentration at the feed stream. In addition, the effect of the circulation of the flowing electrolyte channel outlet stream on the performance is discussed. The results show that the maximum power densities that could be achieved do not significantly differ between these two fuel cells; however the electrical efficiency could be increased by 57% when FE-DMFC is used instead of DMFC.  相似文献

The control of a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) operating under variable power conditions is important in the development of a commercially applicable device. Fuel cells are conventionally designed for a maximum power output. However variable load cycles can result in fuel cell operation under sub-optimal conditions. In this paper, a simple method of power management using a physical guard is presented. The guard can be used on the anode or cathode electrode, in the membraneless gap or in any combination. This design selectively deactivates specific active regions of the electrode assembly and enables the DMFC to operate at a constant voltage and current density at different absolute power conditions. The guard also serves to control excessive crossover during shutdown and low power operation.  相似文献

To meet the demands for high power micro-electronic devices, two silicon-based micro-direct methanol fuel cell (μDMFC) stacks consisting of six individual cells with two different anode flow fields were designed, fabricated and evaluated. Micro-electronic–mechanical-system (MEMS) technology was used to fabricate both flow field plate and fuel distribution plate on the silicon wafer. Experimental results show that either an individual cell or a stack with double serpentine-type flow fields presents better cell performance than those with pin-type flow fields. A μDMFC stack with double serpentine-type flow fields generates a peak output power of ca. 151 mW at a working voltage of 1.5 V, corresponding to an average power density of ca. 17.5 mW cm−2, which is ca. 20.7% higher than that with pin-type flow fields. The volume and weight of the stacks are only 5.3 cm3 and 10.7 g, respectively. Such small stacks could be used as power sources for micro-electronic devices.  相似文献

Fuel cells are being considered as an important technology that can be used for various power applications. For portable electronic devices such as laptops, digital cameras, cell phone, etc., the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) is a very promising candidate as a power source. Compared with conventional batteries, DMFC can provide a higher power density with a long-lasting life and recharging which is almost instant. However, many issues related to the design, fabrication and operation of miniaturized DMFC power systems still remain unsolved. Fuel delivery is one of the key issues that will determine the performance of the DMFC. To maintain a desired performance, an efficient fuel delivery system is required to provide an adequate amount of fuel for consumption and remove carbon dioxide generated from fuel cell devices at the same time. In this paper, a novel fuel delivery system combined with a miniaturized DMFC is presented. The core component of this system is a piezoelectric valveless micropump that can convert the reciprocating movement of a diaphragm activated by a piezoelectric actuator into a pumping effect. Nozzle/diffuser elements are used to direct the flow from inlet to outlet. As for DMFC devices, the micropump system needs to meet some specific requirements: low energy consumption but a sufficient fuel flow rate. Based on theoretical analysis, the effect of piezoelectric materials properties, driving voltage, driving frequency, nozzle/diffuser dimension, and other factors on the performance of the whole fuel cell system will be discussed. As a result, a viable design of a micropump system for fuel delivery can be achieved and some simulation results will be presented as well.  相似文献

Protonated polyaniline (PANI) is directly polymerized on Nafion 117 (N117), forming a composite membrane, to act as a methanol-blocking layer to reduce the methanol crossover in the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC), which is beneficial for the DMFC operating at high methanol concentration. The PANI layer grown on the N117 with a thickness of 100 nm has an electrical conductivity of 13.2 S cm−1. The methanol permeability of the PANI/N117 membrane is reduced to 59% of that of the N117 alone, suggesting that the PANI/N117 can effectively reduce the methanol crossover in the DMFC. Comparison of membrane-electrode-assemblies (MEA) using the conventional N117 and the newly developed PANI/N117 composite shows that the PANI/N117-based MEA outputs higher power at high methanol concentration, while the output power of the N117-based MEA is reduced at high methanol concentration due to the methanol crossover. The maximum power density of the PANI/N117-based MEA at 60 °C is 70 mW cm−2 at 6 M methanol solution, which is double the N117-based MEA at the same methanol concentration. The resistance of PANI/N117 composite membrane is reduced at elevated methanol concentration, due to the hydrogen bonding between methanol and PANI pushes the polymer chains apart. It is concluded that the PANI/N117-based MEA performs well at elevated methanol concentration, which is suitable for the long-term operation of the DMFC.  相似文献

Models are a fundamental tool for the design process of fuel cells and fuel cell systems. In this work, a steady-state, one-dimensional model accounting for coupled heat and mass transfer, along with the electrochemical reactions occurring in the DMFC, is presented. The model output is the temperature profile through the cell and the water balance and methanol crossover between the anode and the cathode. The model predicts the correct trends for the influence of current density and methanol feed concentration on both methanol and water crossover. The model estimates the net water transfer coefficient through the membrane, α, a very important parameter to describe water management in the DMFC. Suitable operating ranges can be set up for different MEA structures maintaining the crossover of methanol and water within acceptable levels. The model is rapidly implemented and is therefore suitable for inclusion in real-time system level DMFC calculations.  相似文献

This study examines the feasibility of powering a range of portable devices with a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The analysis includes a comparison between a Li-ion battery and DMFC to supply the power for a laptop, camcorder and a cell phone. A parametric study of the systems for an operational period of 4 years is performed. Under the assumptions made for both the Li-ion battery and DMFC system, the battery cost is lower than the DMFC during the first year of operation. However, by the end of 4 years of operational time, the DMFC system would cost less. The weight and cost comparisons show that the fuel cell system occupies less space than the battery to store a higher amount of energy. The weight of both systems is almost identical. Finally, the CO2 emissions can be decreased by a higher exergetic efficiency of the DMFC, which leads to improved sustainability.  相似文献

To achieve the maximum performance from a Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC), one must not only investigate the materials and configuration of the MEA layers, but also consider alternative cell geometries that produce a higher instantaneous power while occupying the same cell volume. In this work, a two-dimensional, two-phase, non-isothermal model was developed to investigate the steady-state performance and design characteristics of a tubular-shaped, passive DMFC. Under certain geometric conditions, it was found that a tubular DMFC can produce a higher instantaneous Volumetric Power Density than a planar DMFC. Increasing the ambient temperature from 20 to 40 °C increases the peak power density produced by the fuel cell by 11.3 mW cm−2 with 1 M, 16.3 mW cm−2 with 2 M, but by only 8.4 mW cm−2 with 3 M methanol. The poor performance with 3 M methanol at a higher ambient temperature is caused by increased methanol crossover and significant oxygen depletion along the Cathode Transport Layer (CTL). For a 5 cm long tubular DMFC to maintain sufficient Oxygen transport, the thickness of the CTL must be greater than 1 mm for 1 M operation, greater than 5 mm for 2 M operation, and greater than 10 mm for 3 M or higher operation.  相似文献

Passive direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) are promising energy sources for portable electronic devices. Different from DMFCs with active fuel feeding systems, passive DMFCs with nearly stagnant fuel and air tend to bear comparatively less power densities. In the aspect of cell performance optimization, there could be significant differences in cell design parameters between active and passive DMFCs. A numerical model that could simulate methanol permeation and the pertinent mixed potential effect in a DMFC was used to help seek for possibilities of optimizing the cell performance of a passive DMFC by studying impacts from variations of cell design. The subjects studied include catalysis of the anode and the cathode, membrane thickness, membrane conductivity, and methanol concentration. In contrast to general understandings on a DMFC with active fuel and reactant gas, our simulation results for a passive DMFC used in this study indicated that the catalysis of the cathode appeared to be the most important parameter. The maximum power density was predicted to improve by 38% with the thickness of the cathodic catalyst layer doubled and by 36% with the catalyst loading doubled. The improvement on cell performance would multiply if we simultaneously adopted the most optimal parameters during the simulation study.  相似文献

This paper describes the possible evolution of Li-ion technology, and evaluates the expected improvements, arising from new materials to cell technology. New active materials under investigation and electrode process improvements may allow an ultimate final energy density of more than 500 Wh/l and 200 Wh/kg, in the next 5–10 years, while maintaining sufficient power densities. A new rechargeable battery technology cannot be foreseen today that surpasses this. The possible use of small fuel cells is also discussed. The only solution would be direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology, providing that the remaining important technological issues are solved. The association with a rechargeable battery could provide an optimised energy + power, hybrid power source. Several simulated comparisons for small- to medium-sized power sources are described, between fuel cells and batteries. Hybrid Li-ion/DMFC is a good option for systems larger than 1 kWh. The hybrid concept of high-energy–low-power primary lithium (as the fuel) with high-power Li-ion (as the cell stack) is an already available, cost effective solution where long run times are required.  相似文献

In the present study, a hydrogen polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC) micropowerplant in combination with a steam reformer fed by methanol and a direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) micropowerplant are analyzed numerically regarding their exergetic efficiency. The effects of concentration and activation overpotentials, and ohmic resistance on the efficiency are considered in quasi-two-dimensional fuel cell models. The influence of significant operational parameters on the exergetic efficiency is examined numerically. Experimental results are conducted for the steam reformer. This work shows the importance of an exergy analysis of the fuel cell as part of an entire thermodynamic system generating electric power and compares PEFC and DMFC micropowerplants exergetically.  相似文献

A new single passive direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) supplied with pure methanol is designed, assembled and tested using a pervaporation membrane (PM) to control the methanol transport. The effect of the PM size on the fuel cell performances and the constant current discharge of the fuel cell with one-fueling are studied. The results show that the fuel cell with PM 9 cm2 can yield a maximum power density of about 21 mW cm−2, and a stable performances at a discharge current of 100 mA can last about 45 h. Compared with DMFC supplied with 3 M methanol solution, the energy density provided by this new DMFC has increased about 6 times.  相似文献

This review describes the polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) that are both under development and commercialized for direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC). Unlike the membranes for hydrogen fuelled PEM fuel cells, among which perfluorosulfonic acid based membranes show complete domination, the membranes for DMFC have numerous variations, each has its advantages and disadvantages. No single membrane is emerging as absolutely superior to others. This review outlines the prospects of the currently known membranes for DMFC. The membranes are evaluated according to various properties, including: methanol crossover, proton conductivity, durability, thermal stability and maximum power density. Hydrocarbon and composite fluorinated membranes currently show the most potential for low cost membranes with low methanol permeability and high durability. Some of these membranes are already beginning to impact the portable fuel cell market.  相似文献

To realize lightweight design of the fuel cell system is a critical issue before it is put into practical use. The printed-circuit-board (PCB) technology can be potentially used for production of current collectors or flow distributors. This study develops prototypes of a single passive air-breathing direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) and also an 8-cell mono-polar DMFC stack based on PCB current collectors. The effects of diverse structural and operational factors on the cell performance are explored. Results show that the methanol concentration of 6 M promotes a higher cell performance with a peak power density of 18.3 mW cm−2. The combination of current collectors using a relatively higher anode open ratio and inversely a lower cathode open ratio helps enhance the cell performance. Dynamic tests are also conducted to reveal transient behaviors and its dependence on the operating conditions. To validate the real working status of the DMFC stack, it is coupled with an LED lightening system. The performance of this hybrid system is also reported in this study.  相似文献
