Based on the irreversible model of a PEM fuel cell working at steady state, expressions for the power output, efficiency and entropy production rate of the PEM fuel cell are analytically derived by using the theory of electrochemistry and non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The effects of multi-irreversibilities resulting from electrochemical reaction, heat transfer and electrical resistance on the key parameters of the PEM fuel cell are analyzed. The curves of the power output, efficiency and entropy production rate of the PEM fuel cell varying with the electric current density are represented through numerical calculation. The general performance characteristics of the PEM fuel cell are revealed and the optimum criteria of the main performance parameters are determined. Moreover, the optimal matching condition of the load resistance is obtained from the relations between the load resistance and the power output and efficiency. The effects of the leakage resistance on the performance of the PEM fuel cell are expounded and the optimally operating states of the PEM fuel cell are further discussed.  相似文献

A generic model of the hybrid system consisting of an alkaline fuel cell (AFC) and a heat-driven cycle, which may work as either a refrigerator or a heat pump, is originally established. On the basis of the models of AFCs and three-heat-reservoir cycles, the equivalent power output and efficiency of the hybrid system are obtained. The performance characteristic curves of the hybrid system are represented through numerical calculation. The maximum equivalent power output and efficiency of the hybrid system are determined. Problems concerning the optimal operation of the hybrid system are discussed. The effects of the main irreversible losses on the performance of the hybrid system are investigated in detail. It is important to note that the waste heat produced in the AFC can be readily used in such a hybrid cycle.  相似文献

Based on the current models of solid oxide fuel cells and two-heat-source heat engines consisting of two isothermal and two polytropic processes, a general model of a class of fuel cell/heat engine hybrid systems is established, in which multi-irreversibilities existing in real hybrid systems are taken into account. Expressions for the efficiency and power output of the hybrid systems are analytically derived from the model. The curves of the efficiency and power output of the hybrid systems varying with the current density and the efficiency versus power output curves are represented through numerical calculation. The general performance characteristics of the hybrid systems are revealed and the optimum criteria of the main performance parameters are determined. The effects of some key irreversibilities existing in the fuel cell, regenerator and two-heat-source heat engine on the performance of the hybrid systems are discussed in detail. The results obtained here are very general and may be directly used to derive the various interesting conclusions of the hybrid systems which are operated under different special cases.  相似文献

Using fuel cell systems for distributed generation (DG) applications represents a meaningful candidate to conventional plants due to their high power density and the heat recovery potential during the electrochemical reaction. A hybrid power system consisting of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack and an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is proposed to utilize the waste heat generated from PEM fuel cell. The system performance is evaluated by the steady-state mathematical models and thermodynamic laws. Meanwhile, a parametric analysis is also carried out to investigate the effects of some key parameters on the system performance, including the fuel flow rate, PEM fuel cell operating pressure, turbine inlet pressure and turbine backpressure. Results show that the electrical efficiency of the hybrid system combined by PEM fuel cell stack and ORC can be improved by about 5% compared to that of the single PEM fuel cell stack without ORC, and it is also indicated that the high fuel flow rate can reduce the PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency. Moreover, with an increased fuel cell operating pressure, both PEM fuel cell electrical efficiency and overall electrical efficiency firstly increase, and then decrease. Turbine inlet pressure and backpressure also have effects on the performance of the hybrid power system.  相似文献

In this study, a new molten carbonate fuel cell-gas turbine hybrid system, which consists of a fuel cell, three heat exchangers, a compressor, and a turbine, is established. The multiple irreversible losses existing in real hybrid systems are taken into account by the models of a molten carbonate fuel cell and an open Brayton cycle with a regenerative process. Expressions for the power outputs and efficiencies of the subsystems and hybrid system are derived. The maximum power output and efficiency of the hybrid system are numerically calculated. It is found that compared with a single molten carbonate fuel cell, both the power output and efficiency of the hybrid system are greatly enhanced. The general performance characteristics of the hybrid system are evaluated and the optimal criteria of the main performance parameters are determined. The effects of key irreversibilities on the performance of the hybrid system are investigated in detail. It is found that the use of a regenerator in the gas turbine can availably improve the power output and efficiency of the system. The results obtained here are significant and may be directly used to discuss the optimal performance of the hybrid system in special cases.  相似文献

Based on the models of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell working at steady state and a semiconductor thermoelectric generator, a hybrid system consisting of a PEM fuel cell, a semiconductor thermoelectric generator, and a regenerator is originally put forward. Expressions for the efficiencies and power outputs of the fuel cell, thermoelectric generator, and hybrid system are derived. The relation between the operating electric currents in the fuel cell and thermoelectric generator is obtained. The maximum power output of the hybrid system is numerically given. The optimally operating electric currents in the fuel cell and thermoelectric generator are calculated, and consequently, the optimal region of the hybrid system is determined. The results obtained here will provide some guidance for further understanding the performance and operation of practical PEM fuel cell-thermoelectric generator hybrid systems.  相似文献

A fully-integrated micro PEM fuel cell system with a NaBH4 hydrogen generator was developed. The micro fuel cell system contained a micro PEM fuel cell and a NaBH4 hydrogen generator. The hydrogen generator comprised a NaBH4 reacting chamber and a hydrogen separating chamber. Photosensitive glass wafers were used to fabricate a lightweight and corrosion-resistant micro fuel cell and hydrogen generator. All of the BOP such as a NaBH4 cartridge, a micropump, and an auxiliary battery were fully integrated. In order to generate stable power output, a hybrid power management operating with a micro fuel cell and battery was designed. The integrated performance of the micro PEM fuel cell with NaBH4 hydrogen generator was evaluated under various operating conditions. The hybrid power output was stably provided by the micro PEM fuel cell and auxiliary battery. The maximum power output and specific energy density of the micro PEM fuel cell system were 250 mW and 111.2 W h/kg, respectively.  相似文献

Transient power demand fluctuations and maintaining high energy density are important for many portable devices. Small fuel cells are potentially good candidates as alternative energy sources for portable applications. Hybrid power sources have some inherent properties which may be effectively utilized to improve the efficiency and dynamic response of the system. In this paper, an improved dynamic model considering the characteristics of the temperature and equivalent internal resistance is presented for proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The dynamic behavior of a system with hybrid PEM fuel cells and an ultracapacitor bank is simulated. The hybrid PEM fuel cell/ultracapacitor bank system is used for powering a portable device (such as a laptop computer). The power requirement of a laptop computer varies significantly under different operation conditions. The analytical models of the hybrid system with PEM fuel cells and an ultracapacitor bank are designed and simulated by developing a detailed simulation software using Matlab, Simulink and SimPowerSystems Blockset for portable applications.  相似文献

Fuel cells output power depends on the operating conditions, including cell temperature, oxygen partial pressure, hydrogen partial pressure, and membrane water content. In each particular condition, there is only one unique operating point for a fuel cell system with the maximum output. Thus, a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controller is needed to increase the efficiency of the fuel cell systems. In this paper an efficient method based on the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and PID controller (PSO-PID) is proposed for MPPT of the proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells. The closed loop system includes the PEM fuel cell, boost converter, battery and PSO-PID controller. PSO-PID controller adjusts the operating point of the PEM fuel cell to the maximum power by tuning of the boost converter duty cycle. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm, simulation results are compared with perturb and observe (P&O) and sliding mode (SM) algorithms under different operating conditions. PSO algorithm with fast convergence, high accuracy and very low power fluctuations tracks the maximum power point of the fuel cell system.  相似文献

The development of fuel cell electric vehicles requires the on-board integration of fuel cell systems and electric energy storage devices, with an appropriate energy management system. The optimization of performance and efficiency needs an experimental analysis of the power train, which has to be effected in both stationary and transient conditions (including standard driving cycles). In this paper experimental results concerning the performance of a fuel cell power train are reported and discussed. In particular characterization results for a small sized fuel cell system (FCS), based on a 2.5 kW PEM stack, alone and coupled to an electric propulsion chain of 3.7 kW are presented and discussed. The control unit of the FCS allowed the main stack operative parameters (stoichiometric ratio, hydrogen and air pressure, temperature) to be varied and regulated in order to obtain optimized polarization and efficiency curves. Experimental runs effected on the power train during standard driving cycles have allowed the performance and efficiency of the individual components (fuel cell stack and auxiliaries, dc–dc converter, traction batteries, electric engine) to be evaluated, evidencing the role of output current and voltage of the dc–dc converter in directing the energy flows within the propulsion system.  相似文献

In order to improve the power generation efficiency of fuel cell systems employing liquid fuels, a hybrid system consisting of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is proposed. Utilize the high temperature heat generated by SOFC to reform as much methanol as possible to improve the overall energy efficiency of the system. When SOFC has a stable output of 100 kW, the amount of hydrogen after reforming is changed by changing the methanol flow rate. Three hybrid systems are proposed to compare and select the best system process suitable for different situations. The results show that the combined combustion system has the highest power generation, which can reach 350 kW and the total electrical efficiency is 57%. When the power of the tail gas preheating system is 160 kW, the electrical efficiency can reach 75%. The PEM water preheating system has the most balanced performance, with the electric power of 300 kW and the efficiency of 66%.  相似文献

The integration of the gas turbine cycle and organic Rankine cycle with the solid oxide fuel cell for power generation is quite prevalent. However, the need is also felt for systems capable of providing power with cooling. Therefore, it is proposed to integrate solid oxide fuel cell with gas turbine cycle, vapour absorption refrigeration system and organic Rankine cycle through the heat available with fluid in the cycle. Here intercooled and reheat gas turbine cycle is integrated with solid oxide fuel cell. Heat rejected in intercooling is used in vapour absorption refrigeration system for cooling. This paper presents thermoeconomic analysis. Results show that the combination of solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine-vapour absorption refrigeration system-organic Rankine cycle yields increase in efficiency to 68.79% as compared to 58.88% from combined solid oxide fuel cell-gas turbine cycle. The cost of electricity per unit power output is found as 1939.93 $/kW.

Although there has been a lot of waste heat utilization studies for the air-cooled data center (DC) systems, the waste heat utilization has not been studied for the liquid-cooled DC systems, which have been rapidly gaining importance for the high-performance Information and Communication Technology facilities such as cloud computing and big data storage. Compared to the air-cooled systems, higher heat removal capacity of the liquid-cooled DC systems provides better heat transfer performance; and therefore, the waste heat of the liquid-cooled DC systems can be more efficiently utilized in the low-temperature and low-carbon energy systems such as electricity generation via polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells. For this purpose, the current study proposes a novel hybrid system that consists of the PEM fuel cell and the two-phase liquid-immersion DC cooling system. The two-phase liquid immersion DC cooling system is one of the most recent and advanced DC cooling methods and has not been considered in the DC waste heat utilization studies before. The PEM fuel cell unit is operated with the hydrogen and compressed air flows that are pre-heated in the DC cooling unit. Due to its original design, the hybrid system brings its own original design criteria and limitations, which are taken into account in the energetic and exergetic assessments. The power density of the PEM fuel cell reaches up to 0.99 kW/m2 with the water production rate of 0.0157 kg/s. In the electricity generation case, the highest energetic efficiency is found as 15.8% whereas the efficiency increases up to 96.16% when different multigeneration cases are considered. The hybrid design deduces that the highest exergetic efficiency and sustainability index are 43.3% and 1.76 and they are 9.4% and 6.6% higher than exergetic and sustainability performances of the stand-alone PEM fuel cell operation, respectively.  相似文献

A general endoreversible refrigeration cycle model which includes the irreversibility of heat transfer across finite temperature differences and the heat leak loss between the external heat reservoirs is used to analyze the rate of exergy output of a multi-stage combined refrigeration system. The relations between the rates of exergy output and refrigeration and between the rate of exergy output and coefficient of performance are derived. The efficiency of exergy output is calculated. The optimal problems relative to the rate of exergy output are discussed. Some characteristic curves of the refrigeration system are presented. The results obtained here are suitable for an arbitrary-stage endoreversible combined refrigeration system.  相似文献

The hybrid system comprised by a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell and internal combustion engine shows many advantages for vehicle applications. The hybrid system can recover the un‐reacted hydrogen from fuel cell, utilize heat in the combustion product from cylinder, or combine the advantages of both. Based on thermodynamics and electrochemistry, an indirect integration system of the PEM fuel cell and Otto cycle is established for vehicle applications. The irreversibilities such as the entropy production and overpotentials in the fuel cell, the finite‐rate heat transfer between the air in the Otto cycle and combustion chamber wall, the irreversible compression, expansion, and regeneration processes in the Otto cycle are considered. The excellence of the PEM fuel cell compared with internal combustion engine is shown in terms of energy conversion efficiency. When the vehicle is speeding or launching suddenly, not only the flow rate of natural gas into the hybrid system should be increased but also a specific coupling mode between two powertrain systems should be found. In this study, we deal with the exergoeconomic analysis of a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell power system for transportation applications. The PEM fuel cell performance model, that is the polarization curve, is previously developed by one of the authors by using the some derived and developed equations in literature. The exergoeconomic analysis includes the PEM fuel cell stack and system components as compressor, humidifiers, pressure regulator and the cooling system. A parametric study is also conducted to investigate the system performance and cost behaviour of the components, depending on the operating temperature, operating pressure, membrane thickness, anode stoichiometry and cathode stoichiometry. For the system performance, energy and exergy efficiencies and power output are investigated in detail. It is found that with an increase of temperature and pressure and a decrease of membrane thickness the system efficiency increases which leads to a decrease in the overall production cost. The minimization of the production costs is very crucial in commercialization of the fuel cells in transportation sector.  相似文献

Reliance on point estimates when developing hybrid energy systems can over/underestimate system performance. Analyzing the sensitivity and uncertainty of large-scale hybrid systems can be a challenging task due to the large number of design parameters to be explored. In this work, a comprehensive and efficient sensitivity/uncertainty methodology is applied on two fuel cell hybrid systems to help analysts to investigate hybrid systems more efficiently. This methodology also includes a step-by-step approach to perform design optimization under uncertainty of energy systems. The two hybrid systems are: molten carbonate fuel cell with thermoelectric generator (MCFC-TEG) and phosphoric acid fuel cell with refrigerator (PAFC-REF). Various sensitivity and uncertainty methods are utilized to analyze the design parameters and their effect on the performance of these two systems. These methods perform local and regression-based sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo uncertainty propagation, parameter screening, and variance decomposition. Detailed approach is adopted to identify and rank the influential design parameters for each system. Results demonstrate that the optimum power output of the MCFC-TEG has 10% uncertainty, driven mainly by the operating temperature, cahtode activation energy, TEG figure of merit, and TEG thermal conductivity. However, PAFC-REF is more reliable with larger power output and 1.4% uncertainty, driven by the charge transfer coefficient, heat transfer in the refrigeration cycle, cold reservoir temperature, and operating temperature. Based on this identification, design optimization under uncertainty is performed using these sensitive parameters to improve the system performance through increasing the power output and reducing its uncertainty.  相似文献

A novel solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) multigeneration system fueled by biogas derived from agricultural waste (maize silage) is designed and analyzed from the view point of energy and exergy analysis. The system is proposed in order to limit the greenhouse gas emissions as it uses a renewable energy source as a fuel. Electricity, domestic hot water, hydrogen and cooling load are produced simultaneously by the system. The system includes a solid oxide fuel cell; which is the primary mover, a biogas digester subsystem, a cascaded closed loop organic Rankine cycle, a single effect LiBr-water absorption refrigeration cycle, and a proton exchange membrane electrolyzer subsystem. The proposed cascaded closed-loop ORC cycle is considered as one of the advanced heat recovery technologies that significantly improve thermal efficiency of integrated systems. The thermal performance of the proposed system is observed to be higher in comparison to the simple ORC and the recuperated ORC cycles. The integration of a splitter to govern the flue gas separation ratio is also introduced in this study to cater for particular needs/demands. The separation ratio can be used to vary the cooling load or the additional power supplied by the ORC to the system. It is deduced that net electrical power, cooling load, heating capacity of the domestic hot water and total energy and exergy efficiency are 789.7 kW, 317.3 kW, 65.75 kW, 69.86% and 47.4% respectively under integral design conditions. Using a parametric approach, the effects of main parameters on the output of the device are analyzed. Current density is an important parameter for system performance. Increasing the current density leads to increased power produced by the system, decreased exergy efficiency in the system and increased energy efficiency. After-burner, air and fuel heat exchangers are observed to have the highest exergy destruction rates. Lower current density values are desirable for better exergy-based sustainability from the exergetic environmental impact assessment. Higher current density values have negative effect on the environment.  相似文献
