In this paper, the multi carrier energy (MCE) systems are reviewed from different point of views including mathematical models, integrated components and technologies, uncertainty management, planning objectives, environmental pollution, resilience, and robustness. The basic of MCE systems is formed by combination of cooling, heating and power (CCHP). The natural gas and electricity are the main inputs to MCE systems and the cooling, heating, and electricity are the common outputs. The regular energy converters in the MCE systems are combined heat and power (CHP), gas boiler, absorption-electrical chillers, power to gas (P2G) and fuel-cell. The generic energy storages are electrical, heating, cooling, hydrogen, carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydro systems.  相似文献

The Sustainable Transport Energy Programme (STEP) is an initiative of the Government of Western Australia, to explore hydrogen fuel cell technology as an alternative to the existing diesel and natural gas public transit infrastructure in Perth. This project includes three buses manufactured by DaimlerChrysler with Ballard fuel cell power sources operating in regular service alongside the existing natural gas and diesel bus fleets. The life-cycle assessment (LCA) of the fuel cell bus trial in Perth determines the overall environmental footprint and energy demand by studying all phases of the complete transportation system, including the hydrogen infrastructure, bus manufacturing, operation, and end-of-life disposal. The LCAs of the existing diesel and natural gas transportation systems are developed in parallel. The findings show that the trial is competitive with the diesel and natural gas bus systems in terms of global warming potential and eutrophication. Emissions that contribute to acidification and photochemical ozone are greater for the fuel cell buses. Scenario analysis quantifies the improvements that can be expected in future generations of fuel cell vehicles and shows that a reduction of greater than 50% is achievable in the greenhouse gas, photochemical ozone creation and primary energy demand impact categories.  相似文献

Hydrogen fuel has the potential to mitigate the negative effects of greenhouse gases and climate change by neutralizing carbon emissions. Transporting large volume of hydrogen through pipelines needs hydrogen-specific infrastructure such as hydrogen pipelines and compressors, which can become an economic barrier. Thus, the idea of blending hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines arises as a potential alternative for transporting hydrogen economically by using existing natural gas grids. However, there are several potential issues that must be considered when blending hydrogen into natural gas pipelines. Hydrogen has different physical and chemical properties from natural gas, including a smaller size and lighter weight, which require higher operating pressures to deliver the same amount of energy as natural gas. Additionally, hydrogen's small molecular size and lower ignition energy make it more likely to permeate through pipeline materials and seals, leading to degradation, and its wider flammability limits make it a safety hazard when leaks occur. In this study, we investigate these potential issues through simulation and technical surveys. We develop a gas hydraulic model to simulate the physical characteristics of a transmission and a distribution pipeline. This model is used throughout the study to visualize the potential impacts of switching from natural gas to hydrogen, and to investigate potential problems and solutions. Furthermore, we develop a Real-Time Transient Model (RTTM) to address the compatibility of current computational pipeline monitoring (CPM) based leak detection methods with blended hydrogen. Finally, we suggest the optimal hydrogen concentration for this model, and investigate the amount of carbon reduction that could be achieved, while considering the energy needs of the system.  相似文献

In this study, comprehensive thermodynamic analysis and techno-economic assessment studies of the renewable hydrogen production and its blending with natural gas in the existing pipelines are performed. Solar and wind energy-based on-grid and off-grid power systems are designed and compared in energy, exergy, and cost. Solar PV panels and wind turbines are particularly considered for electricity and hydrogen production for residential applications in an environmentally benign way. Fuel cell units are included to supply continuous electricity in the off-grid system. Here, the heat required for a community consisting of 100 houses is provided by hydrogen and natural gas mixture as a more environmentally benign fuel. The costs of capital, fuel, operation, and maintenance are calculated and evaluated in detail. The total net present costs are calculated as $6.95 million and $2.47 million for the off-grid and on-grid power systems, respectively. For the off-grid system, energy and exergy efficiencies are calculated as 32.64% and 40.73%, respectively. Finally, the energy and exergy efficiencies of the on-grid system are determined as 26.58% and 35.25%, respectively.  相似文献

One option to decarbonise residential heat in the UK is to convert the existing natural gas networks to deliver hydrogen. We review the technical feasibility of this option using semi-structured interviews underpinned by a literature review and we assess the potential economic benefits using the UK MARKAL energy systems model. We conclude that hydrogen can be transported safely in the low-pressure pipes but we identify concerns over the reduced capacity of the system and the much lower linepack storage compared to natural gas. New hydrogen meters and sensors would have to be fitted to every building in a hydrogen conversion program and appliances would have to be converted unless the government was to legislate to make them hydrogen-ready in advance.  相似文献

In this paper the effects of hydrogen on the transport of natural gas-hydrogen mixture in a high-pressure natural gas transmission system are investigated in detail. Our research focuses on the decrease in transferable energy content under identical operating conditions as hydrogen is blended in the gas transmission network. Based on the extensive literature review the outstanding challenges and key questions of using hydrogen in the natural gas system are introduced. In our research the transmissible energy factor - TEF - is defined that quantifies the relative energy capacity of the pipeline caused by hydrogen blending. A new equation is proposed in this paper to find the value of TEF at specific pressure and temperature conditions for different hydrogen concentrations. This practical equation helps the natural gas system operators in the decision-making process when hydrogen emerges in the gas transmission system. In this paper the change of the compression power requirement, which increases significantly with hydrogen blending, is investigated in detail.  相似文献

This study presents the sustainable planning of a renewables-based energy system, which aims to fulfil the electric needs of the island by replacing the existing diesel generators with new wind farms, photovoltaic installations and hydrogen production systems. Electric system design and least cost planning analysis were concluded using historic data from both demand and supply sides. An optimal “sustainable island” scheme should ensure 100% use of renewable energy resources for power generation, while hydrogen production is ideal for covering storage and transportation needs. Due to its morphology and scale, Karpathos applies perfectly for wind and solar energy systems, due to increased solar resource (about 1790 kWh/m2.year of global irradiation) and high wind potential (average of 9 m/s in specific locations). Therefore, this case study examines an increase in RES penetration up to 20% in the electric energy mixture, a hydrogen production plan just for the needs of transport and a more aggressive, 100% renewables scheme that ensures a self-fulfilling energy system based on indigenous renewable resources.  相似文献

The production of electrolytic hydrogen is considered among the best solution to mitigate the grid instability problems which arise from the widespread distribution of renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar. However, hydrogen is not easy to stock and distribute. Possible solutions are represented by its direct injection into the existing pipeline for natural gas distribution or its utilisation for the production of a substitute of natural gas. In this last case, which follows the so called approach of “power to gas”, a source of carbon is required. Preferably the carbon should come from biomass, since it can be considered “renewable carbon”.Starting from this idea, this study analyses two different approaches, depending on the grid power demand. In a first layout, biomass is gasified with electrolytic hydrogen to generate directly a methane rich syngas. After water condensation, the syngas is fed to a methanation process to convert almost completely carbon in methane.In the second layouts the biomass is gasified with electrolytic oxygen and the syngas is fed, together with other electrolytic oxygen, to a power unit, such as an internal combustion engine, a gas turbine or a high temperature fuel cells (SOFC). The exhaust gas from these power units is composed almost exclusively by carbon dioxide and water vapour. After water condensation, the carbon dioxide is fed together electrolytic hydrogen to a methanation process to obtain the substitute of natural gas.An overall best efficiency of roughly 74% is obtained when the plant is not connected to the grid. On the contrary, when electricity can be absorbed by the grid, best efficiency of 59.4% is reached utilising, as power unit, a SOFC fed at 6 bars.In all cases the input is low value energy (biomass and unstable electric power) and the output is high value energy constituted by a substitute of natural gas and stable electric power.  相似文献

The curtailment of renewable energy would be reduced by converting it to hydrogen or methane using power to hydrogen (P2H) facilities or power to methane (P2M) facilities. Both hydrogen and methane can be injected into the existing natural gas system which has significant potential to unlock the inherent flexibility of integrated energy systems. The coordinated operation strategy of the hybrid power-natural gas energy systems considering P2H and P2M is proposed aiming to minimize the operational cost. In addition, a method to calculate the higher heating value of hydrogen-natural gas mixture is presented along with a strategy for handling the constraints of hydrogen mixture level limits. The simulation results of three case studies demonstrate the economic and environmental benefits of P2H/P2M in terms of reductions in cost, CO2 emissions and wind power curtailment. The differences in benefits between P2H and P2M have also been compared and analyzed.  相似文献

Hydrogen economy is one of the most attractive alternatives to the current carbon-based energy system, since it can be produced from diverse resources and used as a carbon-free energy carrier from the end-user's perspective. This study proposes a hybrid hydrogen supply system for the transport sector, which includes all the life stages from production, transport, and storage to final distribution (fueling stations). Particularly, we consider two types of resources for hydrogen production (i.e., renewable wind power and conventional natural gas) to identify the benefits and bottlenecks of hydrogen supply systems from the economic, environmental, and social perspectives. To achieve this goal, rigorous process models for the involved processes (i.e., hydrogen production by steam methane reforming from natural gas and water electrolysis using wind power, and hydrogen storage and transport) are developed. To illustrate the capability of the proposed system, we conducted a design problem within the hydrogen supply system in Jeju Island, Korea. In this case study, three scenarios were generated by combining different hydrogen production options: 1) wind power-based hydrogen production, 2) natural gas-based hydrogen production, and 3) integrated hydrogen production. As a result, we discussed the optimal hydrogen supply system, from the life cycle perspective, by identifying technical bottlenecks, major cost-drivers, and CO2 burdens.  相似文献

One of the most important elements of economical and social development is to provide uninterrupted electric energy to consumers. The increasing world population and technological developments rapidly increase the demand on electric energy. In order to meet the increasing demand for sustainable development, it is necessary to use the consumable resources of the world in the most productive manner and minimum level and to keep its negative effects on human health and environment in the lowest level as much as possible. In this study, alignment of hydrogen fuel cells, hydroelectric, wind, solar and geothermal sourced electric energy systems, in addition to fossil fueled coal, natural gas and nuclear power plants, in respect to sustainability parameters such as CO2 emission, land use, energy output, fresh water consumption and environmental and social effects is researched. Consequently, it has been determined that the wind and nuclear energy power plants have the highest sustainability indicators. The fuel cells that use hydrogen obtained by using coal and natural gas are determined as the most disadvantageous transformation technologies in respect to sustainability. This study contains an alignment related to today's technologies. Using of renewable energy resources especially in production of hydrogen, output increases to be ensured with nanotechnology applications in photovoltaic systems may change this alignment.  相似文献

Microgrids—generating systems incorporating multiple distributed generator sets linked together to provide local electricity and heat—are one possible alterative to the existing centralized energy system. Potential advantages of microgrids include flexibility in fuel supply options, the ability to limit emissions of greenhouse gases, and energy efficiency improvements through combined heat and power (CHP) applications. As a case study in microgrid performance, this analysis uses a life cycle assessment approach to evaluate the energy and emissions performance of the NextEnergy microgrid Power Pavilion in Detroit, Michigan and a reference conventional system. The microgrid includes generator sets fueled by solar energy, hydrogen, and natural gas. Hydrogen fuel is sourced from both a natural gas steam reforming operation and as a by‐product of a chlorine production operation. The chlorine plant receives electricity exclusively from a hydropower generating station. Results indicate that the use of this microgrid offers a total energy reduction potential of up to 38%, while reductions in non‐renewable energy use could reach 51%. Similarly, emissions of CO2, a key global warming gas, can be reduced by as much as 60% relative to conventional heat and power systems. Hydrogen fuels are shown to provide a net energy and emissions benefit relative to natural gas only when sourced primarily from the chlorine plant. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Air pollution is a serious public health problem throughout the world, especially in industrialized and developing countries. In industrialized and developing countries, motor vehicle emissions are major contributors to urban air quality. Hydrogen is one of the clean fuel options for reducing motor vehicle emissions. Hydrogen is not an energy source. It is not a primary energy existing freely in nature. Hydrogen is a secondary form of energy that has to be manufactured like electricity. It is an energy carrier. Hydrogen has a strategic importance in the pursuit of a low-emission, environment-benign, cleaner and more sustainable energy system. Combustion product of hydrogen is clean, which consists of water and a little amount of nitrogen oxides. Hydrogen has very special properties as a transportation fuel, including a rapid burning speed, a high effective octane number, and no toxicity or ozone-forming potential. It has much wider limits of flammability in air than methane and gasoline. Hydrogen has become the dominant transport fuel, and is produced centrally from a mixture of clean coal and fossil fuels (with C-sequestration), nuclear power, and large-scale renewables. Large-scale hydrogen production is probable on the longer time scale. In the current and medium term the production options for hydrogen are first based on distributed hydrogen production from electrolysis of water and reforming of natural gas and coal. Each of centralized hydrogen production methods scenarios could produce 40 million tons per year of hydrogen. Hydrogen production using steam reforming of methane is the most economical method among the current commercial processes. In this method, natural gas feedstock costs generally contribute approximately 52–68% to the final hydrogen price for larger plants, and 40% for smaller plants, with remaining expenses composed of capital charges. The hydrogen production cost from natural gas via steam reforming of methane varies from about 1.25 US$/kg for large systems to about 3.50 US$/kg for small systems with a natural gas price of 6 US$/GJ. The operation of energy systems considering a multi-carrier scheme takes several advantages of economical, environmental, and technical aspects by utilizing alternative options is supplying different kinds of loads such as heat, gas, and power. This study aims to evaluate the influence of power to hydrogen conversion capability and hydrogen storage technology in energy systems with gas, power, and heat carriers concerning risk analysis. Accordingly, conditional value at risk (CVaR)-based stochastic method is adopted for investigating the uncertainty associated with wind power production. Hydrogen storage system, which can convert power to hydrogen in off-peak hours and to feed generators to produce power at on-peak time intervals, is studied as an effective solution to mitigate the wind power curtailment because of high penetration of wind turbines in electricity networks. Besides, the effect constraints associated with gas and district heating network on the operation of the multi-carrier energy systems has been investigated. A gas-fired combined heat and power (CHP) plant and hydrogen storage are considered as the interconnections among power, gas and heat systems. The proposed framework is implemented on a system to verify the effectiveness of the model. The obtained results show the effectiveness of the model in terms of handling the risks associated with multi-carrier system parameters as well as dealing with the penetration of renewable resources.  相似文献

Compared to the conventional thermal units and electrolytic devices, reversible fuel cells have very high efficiencies on both fuel cell mode of generating electricity and electrolysis mode of producing hydrogen or CHx. However, previous studies about fuel cells and its benefits of power to gas are not fully investigated in the electricity-gas energy system. Moreover, state-of-art studies indicate that hydrogen could be directly injected to the existing natural gas (NG) pipeline within an amount of 5%–20%, which are considered to make a slight influence on the natural gas technologies. This work proposes a novel electricity-hydrogen energy system based on reversible solid oxide cells (RSOCs) to demonstrate the future vision of multi-energy systems on integrating multiple energy carriers such as electricity, pure hydrogen, synthetic natural gas (SNG) and mixed gas of H2-natural gas. The P2G processes of RSOC are sub-divided modelled by power to H2 (P2H) and power to SNG (P2SNG). The co-electrolysis/generation processes and time-dependent start-up costs are considered within a unit commitment model of RSOC. The proposed electricity-hydrogen energy system optimization model is formulated as mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), where the H2-blended mixed gas flow is linearized by an incremental linearize relaxation technic. The aim of the optimization is to reduce the energy cost and enhance the system's ability to integrate sufficient renewables through NG networks. Besides quantified the benefits of renewable level and H2 injection limit on the P2G process, the numerical results show that RSOC combined with H2/SNG injection results in productive economic and environmental benefits through the energy system.  相似文献

Currently, a significant transformation for energy systems has emerged as a result of the trend to develop an energy framework without fossil fuel reliance, the concerns about climate change and air quality, and the need to provide electricity to around of 17% of world population who lacks the service. Accordingly, the deployment of power plants located close to end-users and including multiple energy sources and carriers, along with the growing share of renewable energies, have suggested changes in the energy sector. Despite their potential capabilities, the design of distributed energy systems (DES) is a complex problem due to the simultaneous goals and constraints that need to be considered, as well as to the high context dependence of this kind of projects. For these reasons, in this work a systematic literature review of DES including hydrogen as energy vector, was made analyzing 106 research papers published between the years 2000–2018, and extracted from Scopus® and Web of Science databases. The aim was to identify how hydrogen is employed (technologies, uses) and the criteria that are evaluated (economic, technical, social and environmental) when these systems are designed, planned and/or operated. The results constitute a baseline information covering the type of technologies, equipment sizes and hydrogen applications, that could be valuable for the preliminary stages of research or project planning of DES involving hydrogen. Furthermore, other factors have also been identified, such as the focus on techno-economic issues, and the lack of considering socio/political aspects and the uncertainty about input data like weather conditions, energy prices and demands. Additionally, a more integrated approach is needed including all the hydrogen supply chain stages and project stakeholders, to tackle issues like safety of the energy systems that could produce consumer rejections.  相似文献

There is rising interest globally in the use of hydrogen for the provision of electricity or heat to industry, transport, and other applications in low-carbon energy systems. While there is attention to build out dedicated hydrogen infrastructure in the long-term, blending hydrogen into the existing natural gas pipeline network is also thought to be a promising strategy for incorporating hydrogen in the near-term. However, hydrogen injection into the existing gas grid poses additional challenges and considerations related to the ability of current gas infrastructure to operate with blended hydrogen levels. This review paper focuses on analyzing the current understanding of how much hydrogen can be integrated into the gas grid from an operational perspective and identifies areas where more research is needed. The review discusses the technical limits in hydrogen blending for both transmission and distribution networks; facilities in both systems are analyzed with respect to critical operational parameters, such as decrease in energy density, increased flow speed and pressure losses. Safety related challenges such as, embrittlement, leakage and combustion are also discussed. The review also summarizes current regulatory limits to hydrogen blending in different countries, including ongoing or proposed pilot hydrogen blending projects.  相似文献

The replacement of coal-fired power plants with increasing proportions of renewable and nuclear energies in the province of Ontario highlights the need to balance seasonal energy demands. This can be achieved through power-to-gas technology, where excess energy is used to generate hydrogen gas through electrolysis, and the generation is coupled with underground hydrogen storage. This article presents a preliminary assessment regarding the potential for underground hydrogen storage in geological formations including salt and hard rock caverns, depleted oil and gas fields, and saline aquifers in Ontario, highlighting potential locations where future storage could be feasible. Southern Ontario presents many potential storage options, including Silurian bedded salts, depleted Ordovician natural gas reservoirs, saline aquifers in Cambrian sandstone and hard rock caverns in argillaceous limestones. Hard rock caverns in Precambrian crystalline rocks of the Canadian Shield are also discussed, in addition to the potential for the use of lined rock caverns. This work aims to provide a basis for further research regarding the appropriate location of underground hydrogen gas storage facilities in Ontario.  相似文献

Integrating new technologies into existing thermal energy systems enables multigenerational production of energy sources with high efficiency. The advantages of multigenerational energy production are reflected in the rapid responsiveness of the adaptation of energy source production to current market conditions. To further increase the useful efficiency of multigeneration energy sources production, we developed an exergoeconomic machine-learning model of the integration of the hydrogen thermochemical Cu–Cl cycle into an existing gas-steam power plant. The hydrogen produced will be stored in tanks and consumed when the market price is favourable. The results of the exergoeconomic machine-learning model show that the production and use of hydrogen, in combination with fuel cells, are expedient for the provision of tertiary services in the electricity system. In the event of a breakdown of the electricity system, hydrogen and fuel cells could be used to produce electricity for use by the thermal power plant. The advantages of own or independent production of electricity are primarily reflected in the start-up of a gas-steam power plant, as it is not possible to start a gas turbine without external electricity. The exergy analysis is also in favour of this, as the integration of the hydrogen thermochemical Cu–Cl cycle into the existing gas-steam power plant increases the exergy efficiency of the process.  相似文献
