The fracture behaviour of two toughened epoxy composite systems was investigated using various microscopy techniques. The Mode I delamination fracture toughness,G IC, Mode II delamination fracture toughness;G IIC, and compression after impact (CAI) strength of these model composite systems were also measured. Under Mode I fracture, it was found that these composites exhibit nearly identical toughening mechanisms to those of the rubber-modified neat resins. The composites differ primarily in having smaller damage zones than the neat resin equivalents. Under Mode II fracture, the typical hackles were found to initiate from inside the resin-rich interlaminar region due to the presence of the toughener particles. The CAI strength, based on the present study as well as the work conducted by others, appeared to be related to, but not necessarily strongly dependent on, the interlaminarG IC andG IIC, the thickness of the interlaminar resin-rich region, and the type of the interlaminar toughener particles. Approaches for improving theG IC,G IIC, and CAI strength of high-performance toughened composites are discussed.  相似文献

The transverse tensile properties, interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) laminates with 10 wt% and 20 wt% silica nanoparticles in matrix were investigated, and the influences of silica nanoparticle on those properties of CF/EP laminates were characterized. The transverse tensile properties and mode I interlaminar fracture toughness (GIC) increased with an increase in nanosilica concentration in the matrix resins. However, ILSS and the mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIIC) decreased with increasing nanosilica concentration, especially for the higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%). The reduced GIIC value is attributed to two main competing mechanisms; one is the formation of zipper-like pattern associated with matrix microcracks aligned 45° ahead of the crack tip, while the other is the shear failure of matrix. The ratio of GIIC/GIC decreased with the concentration of silica nanoparticles, comparable with similar CF/EP laminates with dispersed CNTs in matrix. Fractographic studies showed that interfacial failure between carbon fibre and epoxy resin occurred in the neat epoxy laminate, whereas a combination of interfacial failure and matrix failure occurred in the nanosilica-modified epoxy laminates, especially those with a higher nanosilica concentration (20 wt%).  相似文献

An experimental study has been undertaken to characterize the delamination behavior and tensile properties of interply hybrid laminated composites reinforced by interlock weft-knitted and woven glass fiber preform fabrics. The hybrid composites, comprising the alternate layers of interlock and uniweave fabrics, were compared to interlock knitted (only) and uniweave (only) composites with respect to delamination and tensile performances. Mode-I double cantilever beam and mode-II end-notched flexure tests were carried out to assess the interlaminar fracture toughness using aluminum-strip stiffened specimens. The mode-I and mode-II interlaminar fracture toughness values, G IC and G IIC, for the hybrid composite were about three and two times higher than that for the uniweave composite, respectively. The tensile strength and modulus of the hybrid composite were 315 MPa and 12.8 GPa in the wale direction, respectively, demonstrating that the strength and modulus were found to be slightly lower than those of the uniweave composite, and significantly improved in comparison with the interlock knitted composites.  相似文献

Double-cantilever-beam tests were applied to investigate the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of carbon fibre/epoxy laminates, in which the epoxy matrices were incorporated with rubber and silica nano-particles, either singly or jointly. It is shown that the toughness is improved owing to the presence of these nano-particles although nano-rubber is more effective than nano-silica. Further, by keeping the total particle weight percentage constant in epoxies (e.g., at 8 and 12 wt.%) filled with equal amount of nano-silica and nano-rubber, the interlaminar toughness values of the hybrid laminates are always higher than those with nano-silica filled epoxies but lower than those with nano-rubber filled matrices. Scanning electron microscopy examination of the delaminated surfaces of composite laminates filled with nano-particles revealed that cavitation of nano-rubber particles/void growth and debonding of nano-silica from epoxy matrix are responsible for the improved interlaminar toughness observed. It is also shown that the bulk toughness of nano-particle filled epoxies cannot be fully transferred to the interlaminar toughness of composite laminates, being limited by the constraint effect imposed by the carbon fibres. Finally, the role of fibre-bridging on the delaminated crack and hence delamination toughness is discussed.  相似文献

On fracture toughness of nano-particle modified epoxy   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A systematic study on the effects of silica and rubber nano-particles on the fracture toughness behavior of epoxy was conducted. Mode I fracture toughness (GIC) of binary silica/epoxy, binary rubber/epoxy and ternary silica/rubber/epoxy nanocomposites with different particle weight fractions was obtained by compact tension tests. It is found that GIC of epoxy can be significantly increased by incorporating either rubber or silica nano-particles. However, hybrid nanocomposites do not display any “synergistic” effect on toughness. Microstructures before and after fracture testing were examined to understand the role of nano-particles on the toughening mechanisms.  相似文献

The degradation of interlaminar shear strength and shear fracture toughness of glass/epoxy composites due to uptake of distilled water and sea water has been studied. The composites were immersed in water for up to eight months at temperatures up to 70 °C. Unreinforced matrix resin samples were also immersed for periods up to 2 years. Sea water was absorbed less rapidly than distilled water. Weight gains below 1% did not influence the shear strength while higher weight gains reduced shear strength up to 25%. The loss in apparent interlaminar shear strength was uniquely related to specimen weight gain. Mode II fracture toughness, G IIc, also decreased with increasing immersion time after an initial incubation period, but the accelerated tests were found to reduce G IIc less than the room temperature tests at comparable weight gains.  相似文献

The relationship between the interphase consisting of physisorbed and chemisorbed silane on glass fibres and the resultant composite Mode I delamination fracture toughness in glass fibre fabric laminate, was studied. The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of the laminate specimen was obtained by using a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen. The delamination resistance of the laminate specimen finished with two silane concentrations and washed in methanol solvent, is discussed on the basis of the interlaminar fracture toughness. In order to determine the amount of physisorbed and chemisorbed silane on the glass fibre, the amount of total carbon was determined using an analysis instrument. The physisorbed silane migrated into the resin matrix and influenced the mechanical properties and interlaminar fracture of the laminate specimen. The amount of unsaturated polyester resin blended with a silane coupling agent was measured using dynamic mechanical spectroscopy, and a DCB specimen for mechanical properties and fracture toughness.  相似文献

An experimental study was conducted to improve the electrical conductivity of continuous carbon fibre/epoxy (CF/EP) composite laminate, with simultaneous improvement in mechanical performance, by incorporating nano-scale carbon black (CB) particles and copper chloride (CC) electrolyte into the epoxy matrix. CF/EP laminates of 65 vol.% of carbon fibres were manufactured using a vacuum-assisted resin infusion (VARI) technique. The effects of CB and the synergy of CB/CC on electrical resistivity, tensile strength and elastic modulus and fracture toughness (KIC) of the epoxy matrix were experimentally characterised, as well as the transverse tensile modulus and strength, Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness of the CF/EP laminates. The results showed that the addition of up to 3.0 wt.% CB in the epoxy matrix, with the assistance of CC, noticeably improved the electrical conductivity of the epoxy and the CF/EP laminates, with mechanical performance also enhanced to a certain extent.  相似文献

The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness properties of vinyl ester-based composites reinforced with fibreglass manufactured by the advanced textile technologies of braiding, knitting, stitching and through-the-thickness weaving are assessed in comparison to a variety of traditional composites made from fibreglass such as unidirectional or woven rovings. The interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc) of braided and knitted composites are higher than traditional composites by factors of more than two and four, respectively. Toughening in these textile composites was caused by extensive crack branching as the interlaminar crack was forced to follow a tortuous path through the complex fibre architectures. The GIc values of the composites reinforced in the through-thickness direction by weaving or stitching were higher than traditional composites by factors of nearly two and three, respectively, with the main toughening mechanism being crack bridging by the through-thickness binder yarns/stitches. A review of Mode I interlaminar fracture data collected from papers shows that advanced textile techniques are capable of manufacturing composites with substantially improved delamination resistance.  相似文献

The relationship between the adhesive properties of the interphase of glass fibre/resin and the resultant composite Mode I delamination fracture toughness in glass fibre fabric laminate (GFFL) was studied. The Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness of GFFL was obtained by using a double cantilever beam (DCB) specimen. The delamination resistance of GFFLs which have two silane coupling agents and three concentration finishes is discussed on the basis of interlaminar fracture toughness. The crack propagation behaviour of DCB testing was mainly divided into stable and unstable manners. The fracture toughness and the crack propagation behaviour were dependent on the types and concentration of silane coupling agents.  相似文献

In this study, the effects of interleaved nanofibre veils on the Mode I and Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (ILFT) of autoclave cured unidirectional carbon/epoxy composite laminates were investigated. Various electrospun nanofibre veils consisting of a range of different polymer types, fibre diameters and veil architectures were placed in the laminate mid-planes, which were subsequently subjected to double cantilever beam and end-notch flexure tests. It was found that the polymer type and veil areal weight were the most important factors contributing to laminate performance. A 4.5 g/m2 PA66 veil provided the best all-round performance with fracture toughness improvements of 156% and 69% for Mode I and Mode II, respectively.  相似文献

A 5050 wt % mixture of commingled glass/polypropylene fibre system was selected to study the correlations between the morphological details, mode II interlaminar fracture toughness and corresponding failure mechanisms. Mode II interlaminar fracture tests were performed by using the end-notched flexure test procedure. Compared to conventional composite laminates, mode II interlaminar crack extension in these commingled yarn-based composites was very stable, and extensive fibre nesting occurred along the main crack plane. Crack jumping and non-broken matrix links were observed.R-curve behaviour for these materials was identified and the toughness for initiation was much lower than that for propagation. Compared to mode I interlaminar fracture toughness, similar trends in effects of cooling rates and isothermal crystallizations on mode II interlaminar fracture toughness were observed. However, the effects were not as significant as those found for mode I interlaminar fracture toughness.Alexander von Humboldt Fellow.  相似文献

Composite materials in practical use can be subjected to a wide variety of different loading conditions. The most important conditions are mechanical stresses and environmental attacks. An issue of major concern in the utilization of composites is associated with the occurrence of delaminations or interlaminar cracks, which may be related to manufacturing defects or are induced in service by low-velocity impacts. The main environmental attacks are temperature, humidity, radiation, and chemical exposure. Three materials were investigated; two thermosetting matrices (unmodified and toughness-modified epoxy, EP and EPmod) and one thermoplastic matrix (semicrystalline polyetheretherketone, PEEK), all reinforced with unidirectional continuous carbon fibres. Samples of these materials were exposed to water in baths of different temperatures; they were taken for mechanical testing after various time periods. As a result of absorbed moisture, G IC-values increased with moisture content of the samples, whereas G IIC-values decreased. By means of scanning electron microscopy, fracture surfaces were examined. Evidence was found that the increase of G IC-values was due to a greater ductility of the matrix (as a result of the moisture absorbed) and hence more energy-consumptive fibre-bridging. On the other hand, interface failure, as well as a loss of shear strength of the epoxy with increasing amount of moisture absorbed, were responsible for the decrease in the G IIC-values. The thermoplastic matrix system (CF/PEEK) exhibited no influence of moisture on the Mode I property, but a decrease of the values for Mode II.  相似文献

To study the toughening mechanisms of liquid rubber (LR) and core-shell rubber (CSR) in bulk epoxy and composite laminate, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on compact tension (CT) and double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens under mode-I loading. The matrix materials were pure epoxy (DGEBA), 15% LR (CTBN) and 15% CSR modified epoxies. Experimental results and numerical analyses showed that both liquid rubber (LR) and core-shell rubber (CSR) could improve significantly the fracture toughness of pure epoxy (DGEBA). However, the high toughness of these toughened epoxies could not be completely transferred to the interlaminar fracture toughness of the unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced laminate. The main toughening mechanism of CSR in bulk epoxy was the extensive particle cavitation, which greatly released the crack-tip triaxiality and promoted matrix shear plasticity. The poor toughness behavior of CSR in the carbon fibre laminate was thought to be caused by the high constraint imposed by the stiff fibre layers. No particle cavitation had been observed in LR modified epoxy and the main toughening mechanism was merely the large plastic deformation near the crack-tip due to the rubber domains in the matrix which results in a lower yield strength but a higher elongation-to-break.  相似文献

In this paper, the effects of fibre content on the interlaminar fracture in continuous glass-fibre/polyamide 12 composite have been investigated under model I (DCB) loading condition. The specimens were fabricated with different fibre volume contents (21%, 26%, 34% and 39%) by using a powder impregnation method. It was observed that the values of GIC(NL) and GIC(PROP) of this material have a dropping tendency with increasing fibre volume content in the range of 21%–39%, while no general trends in GIC(5%) and GIC(VIS). Results show that the glass-fibre/polyamide 12 composites possess high mode I fracture toughness, which is mainly attributed to the high ductility of the polyamide 12 matrix, and the increased fibre bridging caused by the increasing of the fibre volume content can not change the decrease tendency of GIC(PROP). The fracture surfaces of the specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy, and the fracture mechanism was analysed.  相似文献

A novel pre-preg coating method was used to improve the interlaminar fracture toughness in carbon fibre epoxy composite laminates, using reactive liquid rubber. The Epoxy Terminated Butadiene Nitrile (ETBN) liquid rubber incorporated between pre-pregs using automatic draw bar coating technique. Experimental test results reveal that by adding ETBN in small quantities in the range of 15.55–22.66 g/m2, inter laminar critical energy release rates (GIC and GIIC) can be improved up to 140% in mode-I loadings and 32% in mode-II loadings respectively. It was confirmed that the effect of ETBN rubber concentration in carbon epoxy pre-preg system on interlaminar fracture toughness under mode-I and mode-II loadings, was discussed by on the bases of fractographic observations and mechanism considerations using SEM.  相似文献

Pristine and functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with tailored interfaces were efficiently dispersed in an epoxy matrix using a three‐roll mill and further reinforced with carbon fibres. 1.3‐Dipolar cycloaddition of azomethine ylides was used for the chemical modification of MWCNTs by a solvent‐free approach. The influence of different loadings and types of MWCNTs on the final properties of the epoxy matrix was studied. Moreover, the most promising formulations were selected for manufacturing of prepreg sheets. The transversal tensile properties and the interlaminar fracture toughness under mode I loading (GIC) of multiscale carbon fibre–reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites were characterized. The results point out that it is not straightforward to transfer the remarkable intrinsic properties of MWCNTs to the composite level, although an overall positive trend was found. Double cantilever beam experiments showed that GIC of CFRP composites was improved 44% at ultralow content of functionalized MWCNTs (0.043 wt%).  相似文献

This paper investigates the effect of fibre lay-up and matrix toughness on mode I and mode II interlaminar fracture toughness (GIc and GIIc) of marine composites. Unidirectional and woven roving fibres were used as reinforcements. Two vinyl ester resins with different toughness were used as matrices. Results from both modes showed toughness variation that is consistent with matrix toughness. Values of GIc were not significantly influenced by fibre lay-up except at peak load points in the woven roving/brittle-matrix composite. Each peak load point, caused by interlocked bridging fibres, signified the onset of unstable crack growth. For unidirectional specimens, crack growth was stable and GIc statistically more reliable than woven roving specimens, which gave fewer GIc values due to frequent unstable crack growth. Mode II tests revealed that, except for crack initiation, GIIc was higher in woven roving composites. This was due to fibre bridging, perpendicular to the crack growth direction, which encouraged stable crack growth and increased energy absorption. Mode II R-curves were obtained for the woven roving specimens. These R-curves provide additional information useful for characterising delamination resistance. The paper concludes that composites with woven roving fibres show similar mode I delamination characteristics to the unidirectional composites; but their mode II delamination characteristics, after crack initiation, are quite different.  相似文献

Failure of composite laminates is often the result of “secondary” transverse stresses causing delamination. One well known approach to prevent such failure is to incorporate a distinct interleaf material into the interlaminar region in order to increase its fracture toughness and, consequently, its resistance to delamination. In the recent years various carbon nanotube (CNT) interleaves gained much attention. This work presents experimental study of the Mode I progressive fracture of carbon/epoxy composite laminates modified with high volume fraction, aligned, non-functionalized and functionalized CNT interleaves. The interleaves used here are thin solid sheets produced from vertically grown multiwalled CNT arrays by shear pressing method. A dry or resin infused sheet is integrated between prepreg plies prior to the laminate cure. The obtained results show that both dry and pre-infused CNT interleaves significantly, up to two times, increase the critical strain energy release rate of the baseline non-interleaved laminate. Two methods of functionalizing CNTs within the preform are explored: O2/CF4 plasma and H2SO4/KnO4 wet chemical treatments. Both methods maintain the high alignment and aspect ratio of the CNTs. Although, functionalization results in no additional GIC toughening compared to the non-functionalized interleaves, the characteristics of the fracture surfaces are dramatically different.  相似文献

Bamboo is a kind of biological composites reinforced by unidirectional long fiber. Once there exists crack, the propagation of delamination is controlled by the interlaminar fracture toughness instead of by strength. In this paper, the end notched flexure (ENF) beam specimen was used to test the Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness GIIC along grain of Moso bamboo internode and the fracture surface was analyzed. The results were obtained that the Mode II interlaminar fracture toughness GIIC calculated by the experiment parameter substitution method was more accurate and the value was 1303.18 J/m2 (coefficient of variation = 8.96%) which was about three times higher than the value of Mode I interlaminar fracture toughness; the crack propagation of Mode II interlaminar fracture was mainly self-similar cracking, but the fracture surface was rougher. Ground tissue in the zone of Mode II crack propagation was characterized by hackle shearing deformation. The SEM photos showed that ground tissue separated from fiber along middle lamella under shear stress and as the increasing of the dislocation of upper and lower layer, the thin-walled ground tissue would fracture transversely by tension, while to thick-walled fiber cell, only middle lamella and primary wall were torn then debonded, fragments remained.  相似文献
