Note taking and note reviewing are essential college student learning activities. A large number of carefully controlled studies have evaluated student effectiveness in implementing each of these skills and have found that both can be improved by providing instructor notes. While the Internet now offers a practical method for providing notes, some instructors are reluctant to offer notes because they fear that students will use these notes as an alternative to class attendance. This study used data collected by the server and questionnaires to describe voluntary use of online lecture notes, to search for correlates of individual patterns of note use, and to investigate student use of notes as an alternative to class attendance. Students primarily printed notes and used these notes during class presentations. There was some evidence that note users performed better on examinations than students who did not use notes. Some students did admit to using notes as an alternative to class attendance, but a comparison between the examination scores of those who admitted to this practice and those who claimed never to use notes for this purpose showed no significant differences in performance.  相似文献

Release notes are an important source of information about a new software release. Such notes contain information regarding what is new, changed, and/or got fixed in a release. Despite the importance of release notes, they are rarely explored in the research literature. Little is known about the contained information, e.g., contents and structure, in release notes. To better understand the types of contained information in release notes, we manually analyzed 85 release notes across 15 different software systems. In our manual analysis, we identify six different types of information (e.g., caveats and addressed issues) that are contained in release notes. Addressed issues refer to new features, bugs, and improvements that were integrated in that particular release. We observe that most release notes list only a selected number of addressed issues (i.e., 6-26 % of all addressed issues in a release). We investigated nine different factors (e.g., issue priority and type) to better understand the likelihood of an issue being listed in release notes. The investigation is conducted on eight release notes of three software systems using four machine learning techniques. Results show that certain factors, e.g., issue type, have higher influence on the likelihood of an issue to be listed in release notes. We use machine learning techniques to automatically suggest the issues to be listed in release notes. Our results show that issues listed in all release notes can be automatically determined with an average precision of 84 % and an average recall of 90 %. To train and build the classification models, we also explored three scenarios: (a) having the user label some issues for a release and automatically suggest the remaining issues for that particular release, (b) using the previous release notes for the same software system, and (c) using prior releases for the current software system and the rest of the studied software systems. Our results show that the content of release notes vary between software systems and across the versions of the same software system. Nevertheless, automated techniques can provide reasonable support to the writers of such notes with little training data. Our study provides developers with empirically-supported advice about release notes instead of simply relying on adhoc advice from on-line inquiries.  相似文献

This paper reports a case study for developing lecture teaching in higher education by connecting simultaneously the benefits of face‐to‐face teaching and social software for capturing and sharing students' lecture notes. The study was conducted with 12 university students taking a degree course on pre‐primary education. Data were collected on (1) the nature of the shared lecture notes produced by the students; and (2) their experiences in creating and sharing lecture notes. Students wrote 367 notes in eight lecture sessions. Discourse analysis revealed five types of notes: reproducing lecture content; summarizing lecture content; connecting key concepts; developing lecture content; questions arising from lecture content. Content analysis revealed those aspects of the lectures developed through the shared notes. Discussions with four students at the end of the course explored their experiences of using the shared notes. The results are discussed in the context of changes to the cultural ecology of learning.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the consistency of diagnostic data extracted from narrative electronic patient record (EPR) notes compared with the data from a patient administrative system (PAS). To assess potential benefit of using EPR notes as source of diagnosis data and as basis for case identification. DESIGN: Construction of a computer algorithm to extract ICD-9 codes from narrative EPR notes. Assessment of consistency and reliability of the diagnostic codes retrieved from EPR notes and PAS. Estimation of efficiency of case identification based on data from PAS and EPR. RESULTS: Diagnosis codes were retrieved from PAS with sensitivity of 0.989 and the positive predictive value (PPV) was 0.993. Codes were retrieved from EPR with sensitivity of 0.908 and PPV of 0.990. Combining these two sources increased sensitivity to 0.999. CONCLUSION: Discharge diagnoses were easily extracted from narrative EPR notes by automatic methods. Information extracted from record notes was not significantly different from the corresponding data in PAS, but EPR was incomplete as compared with PAS. Utilizing data extracted from EPR improved case identification significantly.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a system LESSON for lecture notes searching and sharing, which is dedicated to both instructors and students for effectively supporting their Web-based teaching and learning activities. The LESSON system employs a metasearch engine for lecture notes searching from Web and a peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay network for lecture notes sharing among the users. A metasearch engine provides an unified access to multiple existing component search engines and has better performance than general-purpose search engines. With the help of a P2P overlay network, all computers used by instructors and students can be connected into a virtual society over the Internet and communicate directly with each other for lecture notes sharing, without any centralized server and manipulation. In order to merge results from multiple component search engines into a single ranked list, we design the RSF strategy that takes rank, similarity and features of lecture notes into account. To implement query routing decision for effectively supporting lecture notes sharing, we propose a novel query routing mechanism. Experimental results indicate that the LESSON system has better performance in lecture notes searching from Web than some popular general-purpose search engines and some existing metasearch schemes; while processing queries within the system, it outperforms some typical routing methods. Concretely, it can achieve relatively high query hit rate with low bandwidth consumption in different types of network topologies.  相似文献

Since many years ago, musicians have composed music based on the images that they have had in their minds. On the other hand, music affects people’s imagination while hearing it. This research provides a method that can transform shape to music and music to shape. This method defines musical notations for horizontal, diagonal and vertical line segments, filled circle and curve with different colors, which are the basis of many shapes in transforming shapes into music. Then these primary mappings are generalized to more complex forms to transform any shape. Moreover, music can be transformed into shape by this method. For this transformation, primary musical notations such as simple notes, notes joined by a legato, notes with a staccato, notes joined by a legato and have crescendo or decrescendo and notes with an accent or a trill are defined. These primary musical notations are generalized to more complex forms to transform any music into shape. Also, the method of this research can be used in music cryptography. It employs mapping of notes in a twelve-tone equal musical system into shapes and mappings of shapes with an equal line width and different colors into music.

This study analyzes the relationship between class size and student online activity patterns in a series of 28 graduate level computer conferencing courses. Quantitative analyses of note production, average note size, note opening and note reading percentages found a significant positive correlation between class size and mean number of notes generated. Significant negative correlations were found between class size and average note size and between class size and percent of notes opened. Analyses of average reading speeds among large classes and small classes revealed that students in large classes were more likely to scan lengthy notes (i.e., notes that contain more than 350 words). Possible explanations for these results are discussed.  相似文献
