There is no writing without technology. Although we are highly aware of writing's mediated nature when asked to learn new writing technologies either as individuals or as a society, we most often ignore these technologies, allowing them to disappear from our consciousness. Not paying attention to our tools can, however, have dangerous consequences. It becomes easy to forget the political, economic, and random forces that influence our choice of technology. Using personal narrative, I explore this tangled relationship between the disappearance of our tools, tool standardization, tool (dis)abilities, and tool design. I tell the story of my four-year-old son's journey to literacy and my discovery of a new type of writing software called Scrivener. Reading the story of Scrivener's development empowered me: I came to see myself as an active participant in the creation of my writing technologies, and I learned to identify when the discomforts of technology should not be ignored. I use these narratives to argue for a posthumanist view of our relationship with technology, a view in which boundaries between humans and technology are blurred, and I offer suggestions on how to adopt a posthumanist perspective toward writing tools in our composition classrooms.  相似文献

Interconnected workplace information technologies (information infrastructures) are distributed across user and system types, agendas, locales, and temporal rhythms. The term infrastructuring describes the design of information infrastructure not as a bounded phase but as a continuous collaborative and inherently political process. From the perspective of ethnographers, however, this conceptualization presents the practical challenge of dealing with the political work involved in infrastructuring and in its study. In this paper, I discuss the challenges of infrastructuring activities for ethnographic research. Based on a self-revealing account of my three-year ethnographic study of an oil company’s project to design a platform for subsea environmental monitoring in the Arctic region, I discuss how my framing of infrastructuring was the result of my process of constructing the ethnographic field in my research. I combined four mechanisms to scale my ethnographic method to investigate infrastructuring across heterogeneous dimensions. Drawing on my practical experience, I discuss how my process of constructing the field let me discover richer possibilities for understanding the politics involved in the study of infrastructuring.  相似文献

I argue that conversations about the pedagogical applications of web sites and HTML should be extended to include applications of these technologies on the programmatic level. Trygve Reenskaug is professor emeritus of informatics at the University of Oslo. He has 40 years experience in software engineering research and the development of industrial strength software products. He has extensive teaching and speaking experience including keynotes, talks and tutorials. His firsts include the Autokon system for computer aided design of ships with end user programming language, structured programming, and a data base oriented architecture from 1960; object oriented applications and role (collaboration) modeling from 1973; Model-View-Controller, the world's first reusable object oriented framework, from 1979; OOram role modeling method and tool from 1983. Trygve was a member of the UML Core Team and was a contributor to UML 1.4. In this paper I put forward a tripartite quantum operation sharing scheme with a five-qubit entangled state presented by Brown et al. (J Phys A 38:1119, 2005). I confirm the scheme security via analysis, expose its three features and compare my scheme with others from these aspects via discussions. The issue of subjective experience is one which concerns most artists. In my own work this is used to work out the relationship between ‘the self’ and its physical manifestation, ‘the body’. Three works are discussed here: After Image, a series of digitally manipulated photographs which visualise phantoms described by people who have had limbs amputated. This was my first formal collaboration with scientists. ‘I’, a subsequent series of digitally manipulated photographs, made in collaboration with people with congenital disabilities, is concerned with dissolution of the perceived distinction between the ‘normal’, and the ‘other’ (disabled or deformed), body. Lastly, Face Value is an interactive computer installation, made in collaboration with scientist Dr. Alf Linney, and designed to invite its audience to consider the automatic and unconscious judgements each of us makes about character based on (facial) appearance. Despite its dependence on digital technologies, my work remains adamantly physical.  相似文献
