We investigate the problem of processing historical queries on a sensor network. Since data is considered to have been already collected at the sensor nodes, the main issue is exploring the spatial component of the query in order to minimize its cost represented by the energy consumption. We assume queries can be issued at any network node, i.e., there is no central base station and all nodes have only local knowledge of the network. On the one hand, a globally optimum query processing plan is desirable but its construction is not possible due to the lack of global knowledge of the network. On the other hand, while a simple network flooding is feasible, it is not a practical choice from a cost perspective. To address this problem we propose a two-phase query processing strategy, where in the first phase a path from the query originator to the query region is found and in the second phase the query is processed within the query region itself. This strategy is supported by analytical models that are used to dynamically select the best processing strategy depending on the query specifics. Our extensive analytical and experimental results show that our analytical models are accurate and that the two-phase strategy is better suited for small to medium sized queries, being up to 10 times more cost effective than a typical network flooding. In addition, the dynamic selection of a query processing technique proved itself capable of always delivering at least as good performance as the most energy efficient strategy for all query sizes. The recent evolution in sensor node location technology has spurred the development of a special type of in-network processing for wireless sensor networks (WSN), called spatial query processing. These queries require data from nodes within a region (called region of interest) defined by the users. The state of the art of spatial query processing considers, in general, that nodes are always on. However, nodes can go to sleep mode (turn off the radio in duty cycles) in order to save energy. This work proposes an energy-efficient in-network spatial query processing mechanism that assumes nodes having no knowledge about their neighbors. The proposed mechanism is able to process spatial queries without the necessity of periodic beacon transmissions for neighbor table updates or for synchronization. Hence, it can work properly over different types of duty cycle algorithms.  相似文献

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy is valuable because it is scarce. This causes their life time to be determined by their ability to use the available energy in an effective and frugal manner. In most of the earlier sensor network applications, the main requirement consisted mainly of data collection but transmitting all of the raw data out of the network may be prohibitively expensive (in terms of communication) or impossible at given data collection rates.In the last decade, the use of the database paradigm has emerged as a feasible solution to manage data in a WSN context. There are various sensor network query processors (SNQPs) (implementing in-network declarative query processing) that provide data reduction, aggregation, logging, and auditing facilities. These SNQPs view the wireless sensor network as a distributed database over which declarative query processor can be used to program a WSN application with much less effort. They allow users to pose declarative queries that provide an effective and efficient means to obtain data about the physical environment, as users would not need to be concerned with how sensors are to acquire the data, or how nodes transform and/or transmit the data.This paper surveys novel approaches of handling query processing by the current SNQP literature, the expressiveness of their query language, the support provided by their compiler/optimizer to generate efficient query plans and the kind of queries supported. We introduce the challenges and opportunities of research in the field of in-network sensor network query processing as well as illustrate the current status of research and future research scopes in this field.  相似文献

The wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have been evolving very quickly in recent years. Sensors are constantly increasing in sensing, processing, storage, and communication capabilities. In many WSNs that are used in environmental, commercial and military applications, the sensors are lined linearly due to the linear nature of the structure or area that is being monitored making a special class of these networks; We defined these in a previous paper as Linear Sensor Networks (LSNs), and provided a classification of the different types of LSNs. A pure multihop approach to route the data all the way along the linear network (e.g. oil, gas and water pipeline monitoring, border monitoring, road-side monitoring, etc.), which can extend for hundreds or even thousands of kilometers can be very costly from an energy dissipation point of view. In order to significantly reduce the energy consumption used in data transmission and extend the network lifetime, we present a framework for monitoring linear infrastructures using LSNs where data collection and transmission is done using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). The system defines four types of nodes, which include: sensor nodes (SNs), relay nodes (RNs), UAVs, and sinks. The SNs use a classic WSN multihop routing approach to transmit their data to the nearest RN, which acts as a cluster head for its surrounding SNs. Then, a UAV moves back and forth along the linear network and transport the data that is collected by the RNs to the sinks located at both ends of the LSN. We name this network architecture a UAV-based LSNs (ULSNs). This approach leads to considerable savings in node energy consumption, due to a significant reduction of the transmission ranges of the SN and RN nodes and the use of a one-hop transmission to communicate the data from the RNs to the UAV. Furthermore, the strategy provides for reduced interference between the RNs that can be caused by hidden terminal and collision problems, that would be expected if a pure multihop approach is used at the RN level. In addition, three different UAV movement approaches are presented, simulated, and analyzed in order to measure system performance under various network conditions.  相似文献

A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a large collection of sensor nodes with limited power supply, constrained memory capacity, processing capability, and available bandwidth. The main problem in event gathering in wireless sensor networks is the formation of energy-holes or hot spots near the sink. Due to the restricted communication range and high network density, events forwarding in sensor networks is very challenging, and require multi-hop data forwarding. Improving network lifetime and network reliability are the main factors to consider in the research associated with WSN. In static wireless sensor networks, sensors nodes close to the sink node run out of energy much faster than nodes in other parts of the monitored area. The nodes near the sink are more likely to use up their energy because they have to forward all the traffic generated by the nodes farther away to the sink. The uneven energy consumption results in network partitioning and limit the network lifetime. To this end, we propose an on-demand and multipath routing algorithm that utilizes the behavior of real termites on hill building termed Termite-hill which support sink mobility. The main objective of our proposed algorithm is to efficiently relay all the traffic destined for the sink, and also balance the network energy. The performance of our proposed algorithm was tested on static, dynamic and mobile sink scenarios with varying speed, and compared with other state-of-the-art routing algorithms in WSN. The results of our extensive experiments on Routing Modeling Application Simulation Environment (RMASE) demonstrated that our proposed routing algorithm was able to balance the network traffic load, and prolong the network lifetime.  相似文献

After wireless sensor network is deployed, users often submit spatial window aggregation queries to obtain statistical information of the regions of interest, such as maximum temperature, average humidity etc. Existing spatial window aggregation query processing algorithms are based on the assumption that the communication links are ideal which means there are perfect communication links within a given communication range, and none beyond. However, it is not valid in realistic sensor networks, which leads to high retransmissions of data frames. In order to address this problem, a reliable spatial window aggregation query processing algorithm called RESA is proposed in this paper. RESA only requires each node to maintain locations and residual energy of its neighbors and link qualities between them. According to the information, it divides the query area into several sub-regions, followed by collection of sensor readings in each sub-region. RESA traverses all the sub-regions within the query area to ensure the correctness of query result. Based on RESA's energy consumption formula derived, two highly efficient methods for sub-regional division are proposed to reduce packet loss rate during data communication and balance the load of nodes, hence saving energy consumption and extending lifetime. Experimental results show that in most cases RESA outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of energy consumption, quality of query results and lifetime.  相似文献

A wireless sensor network (WSN) is composed of tens or hundreds of spatially distributed autonomous nodes, called sensors. Sensors are devices used to collect data from the environment related to the detection or measurement of physical phenomena. In fact, a WSN consists of groups of sensors where each group is responsible for providing information about one or more physical phenomena (e.g., group for collecting temperature data). Sensors are limited in power, computational capacity, and memory. Therefore, a query engine and query operators for processing queries in WSNs should be able to handle resource limitations such as memory and battery life. Adaptability has been explored as an alternative approach when dealing with these conditions. Adaptive query operators (algorithms) can adjust their behavior in response to specific events that take place during data processing. In this paper, we propose an adaptive in-network aggregation operator for query processing in sensor nodes of a WSN, called ADAGA (ADaptive AGgregation Algorithm for sensor networks). The ADAGA adapts its behavior according to memory and energy usage by dynamically adjusting data-collection and data-sending time intervals. ADAGA can correctly aggregate data in WSNs with packet replication. Moreover, ADAGA is able to predict non-performed detection values by analyzing collected values. Thus, ADAGA is able to produce results as close as possible to real results (obtained when no resource constraint is faced). The results obtained through experiments prove the efficiency of ADAGA.  相似文献

Efficient Distributed Skyline Queries for Mobile Applications   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3       下载免费PDF全文
In this paper, we consider skyline queries in a mobile and distributed environment, where data objects are distributed in some sites (database servers) which are interconnected through a high-speed wired network, and queries are issued by mobile units (laptop, cell phone, etc.) which access the data objects of database servers by wireless channels. The inherent properties of mobile computing environment such as mobility, limited wireless bandwidth, frequent disconnection, make skyline queries more complicated. We show how to efficiently perform distributed skyline queries in a mobile environment and propose a skyline query processing approach, called efficient distributed skyline based on mobile computing (EDS-MC). In EDS-MC, a distributed skyline query is decomposed into five processing phases and each phase is elaborately designed in order to reduce the network communication, network delay and query response time. We conduct extensive experiments in a simulated mobile database system, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of EDS-MC over other skyline query processing techniques on mobile computing.  相似文献

Due to the energy and resource constraints of a wireless sensor node in a wireless sensor network (WSN), design of energy-efficient multipath routing protocols is a crucial concern for WSN applications. To provide high-quality monitoring information, many WSN applications require high-rate data transmission. Multipath routing protocols are often used to increase the network transmission rate and throughput. Although large-scale WSN can be supported by high bandwidth backbone network, the WSN remains the bottleneck due to resource constraints of wireless sensors and the effects of wireless interference. In this paper, we propose a multipath energy-efficient routing protocol for WSN that considers wireless interference. In the proposed routing protocol, nodes in the interference zone of the discovered path are marked and not allowed to take part in the subsequent routing process. In this way, the quality of wireless communication is improved because the effects of wireless interference can be reduced as much as possible. The network load is distributed on multiple paths instead of concentrating on only one path, and node energy cost is more balanced for the entire wireless network. The routing protocol is simulated in NS2 software. Simulation result shows that the proposed routing protocol achieves lower energy cost and longer network lifetime than that in the literature.  相似文献

In this paper we present algorithms for building and maintaining efficient collection trees that provide the conduit to disseminate data required for processing monitoring queries in a wireless sensor network. While prior techniques base their operation on the assumption that the sensor nodes that collect data relevant to a specified query need to include their measurements in the query result at every query epoch, in many event monitoring applications such an assumption is not valid. We introduce and formalize the notion of event monitoring queries and demonstrate that they can capture a large class of monitoring applications. We then show techniques which, using a small set of intuitive statistics, can compute collection trees that minimize important resources such as the number of messages exchanged among the nodes or the overall energy consumption. Our experiments demonstrate that our techniques can organize the data collection process while utilizing significantly lower resources than prior approaches.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are particularly useful for obtaining data concerning events limited to a well-defined geographic region, such as a disaster site or a malfunctioning subsection of a factory plant. Such applications typically use spatial queries, which are SQL-like queries where location constraints are imposed on the collected data. Further, spatial queries allow changing the set of nodes (the region of interest) at runtime. This work surveys spatial queries in WSN. Due to the particular energy and resource constraints of WSN, spatial queries are performed by mechanisms having several stages, each of them implemented using localized distributed algorithms. This article categorizes the existing strategies for each stage, in order to ease the understanding of the state of the art. Finally, we analyze the most recent works on spatial query processing, identifying which classes of algorithms are used on each stage.  相似文献

Top-k monitoring queries are useful in many wireless sensor network applications. A query of this type continuously returns a list of k ordered nodes with the highest (or lowest) sensor readings. To process these queries, a well-known approach is to install a filter at each sensor node to avoid unnecessary transmissions of sensor readings. In this paper, we propose a new top-k monitoring method, named Distributed Adaptive Filter-based Monitoring. In this method, we first propose a new query reevaluation algorithm that works distributedly in the network to reduce the communication cost of sending probe messages. Then, we present an adaptive filter updating algorithm which is based on predicted benefits to lower down the transmission cost of sending updated filters to the sensor nodes. Experimental results on real data traces show that our proposed method performs much better than the other existing methods in terms of both network lifetime and average energy consumption.  相似文献

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are attractive for information gathering in large-scale data rich environments. In order to fully exploit the data gathering and dissemination capabilities of these networks, energy-efficient and scalable solutions for data storage and information discovery are essential. Traditionally, the communication pattern in WSNs has been assumed to be many-to-one; i.e., numerous sensors gather information which is routed to a central point commonly referred to as the sink. However, many emerging applications for WSNs require dissemination of information to interested clients within the network requiring support for differing traffic patterns. Further, in-network query processing capabilities are required for autonomic information discovery.In this paper, we formulate the information discovery problem as a load-balancing problem, with the combined aim being to maximize network lifetime and minimize query processing delay resulting in quality of service (QoS) improvements. We propose novel methods for data dissemination, information discovery and data aggregation that are designed to provide significant QoS benefits. We make use of affinity propagation to group “similar” sensors and have developed efficient mechanisms that can resolve both ALL-type and ANY-type queries in-network with improved energy-efficiency and query resolution time.Simulation and Analytical results prove the proposed method(s) of information discovery offer significant QoS benefits for ALL-type and ANY-type queries in comparison to previous approaches.  相似文献

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are composed of several sensors having limited memory, processing power, communication bandwidth, and energy, which cooperate in performing a given task. The use of the database paradigm has emerged in the last few years as a viable solution to manage data in such a context. In this paper we present the MaD‐WiSe system, a distributed query processing framework that moves the processing of the query into the network. MaD‐WiSe reconsiders various aspects related to database system design and it reinterprets them according to the WSN constraints and requirements. In particular it considers the aspects related to the definition of a query language to formalize the queries, a stream model to manage data acquired by the sensors, a query algebra to define the operators that actually perform the query, and energy efficiency and query optimization strategies for saving energy. Sensor networks are multihop wireless networks of resource-constrained sensor nodes used to realize high-level collaborative sensing tasks. To query or access data generated by the sensor nodes, the sensor network can be viewed as a distributed database. In this paper, we develop algorithms for communication-efficient implementation of join of multiple (two or more) data streams in a sensor network. The distributed implementation of join in sensor networks is particularly challenging due to unique characteristics of the sensor networks such as limited memory and battery energy on individual nodes, arbitrary and dynamic network topology, multihop communication, and unreliable infrastructure. One of our proposed approaches, viz., the perpendicular approach (PA), is load balanced, and in fact, incurs near-optimal communication cost for the special case of binary joins in grid networks under the assumption of uniform generation of tuples across the network. We compare the performance of our designed approaches through extensive simulations on the ns2 simulator, and show that PA results in substantially prolonging the network lifetime compared to other approaches, especially for joins involving spatial constraints.  相似文献

Information Retrieval (IR) systems aim to retrieve data that satisfies certain requirements and constitute an important service in many types of networks, including Delay/Disruption Tolerant Networks (DTNs). In current DTN based IR systems, the data that satisfies a query is assumed to be stored on a single node. Therefore, once a node receives a query in which it has the corresponding data, the query can be resolved completely. However, in scenarios where a query requires data from multiple nodes, these IR systems may fail. Henceforth, in this paper, we propose Distributed Data-Centric Information Retrieval (DDC-IR), a data centric IR system that supports all query types; e.g., continuous and complex. More importantly, it is designed specifically to operate in DTNs. It also incorporates a new packet, aka Query Reply Packet, that includes both a query and one or more replies. We show how this packet facilitates efficient query resolution and enables data centric routing. In addition, it uses caching so that nodes store popular queries that has the effect of speeding up query resolution. We have conducted an extensive simulation study to compare DDC-IR to state of the art IR systems using the popular Random Waypoint model and a trace-file containing student movements on a campus. The results show that DDC-IR is able to resolve 50 % more queries and has an 80 % lower buffer occupancy level than existing IR systems. We also tested DDC-IR in networks with varying sizes. For networks with 100 nodes, DDC-IR is able to resolve queries while current IR systems fail to resolve any queries. In particular, when the number of nodes increases, current IR systems fail to resolve any queries, whilst DDC-IR is able to resolve complex and continuous queries. The influence of the number of sub-queries on query resolution time is also studied. Specifically, when the number of sub-queries in a complex query increases from five to nine, DDC-IR uses 50 % more time to resolve a query. In comparison, prior IR systems fail to resolve any queries.  相似文献
