Efficient admission control algorithms for multimedia servers

In this paper, we have proposed efficient admission control algorithms for multimedia storage servers that are providers of variable-bit-rate media streams. The proposed schemes are based on a slicing technique and use aggressive methods for admission control. We have developed two types of admission control schemes: Future-Max (FM) and Interval Estimation (IE). The FM algorithm uses the maximum bandwidth requirement of the future to estimate the bandwidth requirement. The IE algorithm defines a class of admission control schemes that use a combination of the maximum and average bandwidths within each interval to estimate the bandwidth requirement of the interval. The performance evaluations done through simulations show that the server utilization is improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Furthermore, the quality of service is also improved by using the FM and IE algorithms. Several results depicting the trade-off between the implementation complexity, the desired accuracy, the number of accepted requests, and the quality of service are presented.

Adaptive neural control with fast approximation for uncertain nonlinear systems: A novel composite learning approach

In existing adaptive neural control approaches, only when the regressor satisfies the persistent excitation (PE) or interval excitation (IE) conditions, the constant optimal weights of neural network (NN) can be identified, which can be used to establish uncertainties in nonlinear systems. This paper proposes a novel composite learning approach based on adaptive neural control. The focus of this approach is to make the NN approximate uncertainties in nonlinear systems quickly and accurately without identifying the constant optimal weights of the NN. Hence, the regressor does not need to satisfy the PE or IE conditions. In this paper, regressor filtering scheme is adopted to generate prediction error, and then the prediction error and tracking error simultaneously drive the update of NN weights. Under the framework of Lyapulov theory, the proposed composite learning approach can ensure that approximation error of the uncertainty and tracking error of the system states converge to an arbitrarily small neighborhood of zero exponentially. The simulation results verify the effectiveness and advantages of the proposed approach in terms of fast approximation.

Controlling interactive evolution of 8-bit melodies with genetic programming

Automatic music composition and sound synthesis is a field of study that gains continuously increasing attention. The introduction of evolutionary computation has further boosted the research towards exploring ways to incorporate human supervision and guidance in the automatic evolution of melodies and sounds. This kind of human–machine interaction belongs to a larger methodological context called interactive evolution (IE). For the automatic creation of art and especially for music synthesis, user fatigue requires that the evolutionary process produces interesting content that evolves fast. This paper addresses this issue by presenting an IE system that evolves melodies using genetic programming (GP). A modification of the GP operators is proposed that allows the user to have control on the randomness of the evolutionary process. The results obtained by subjective tests indicate that the utilization of the proposed genetic operators drives the evolution to more user-preferable sounds.
