Two series of polyurethanes and polyurethaneureas were prepared using a two‐step bulk‐solution polymerization procedure. Each series consisted of three polymers based on three molecular weights of α,ω‐bis(6‐hydroxyethoxypropyl) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS): 940, 1913, and 2955. The soft segment in all cases was an 80:20 mixture of PDMS and poly(hexamethylene oxide) (MW 700), and the hard segment was based on 4,4′‐methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and mixed chain extenders (40 wt %). In the polyurethane (PU) series the chain extender was a 60:40 (mol) mixture of BDO and 1,3‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BHTD), whereas in the polyurethaneurea (PUU) series it was a 60:40 (mol) mixture of BHTD and 1,2‐ethylenediamine. The polymerization was carried out by preparing a prepolymer using a bulk polymerization procedure followed by chain extension in a solution of N,N‐dimethylacetamide. Polymers were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The number‐average molecular weights of the polymers in the PU series were in the range of 114,300–124,500, whereas they were in the 78,400–103,300 range for the PUU series. Polymers with good clarity and mechanical properties were obtained with PDMS‐940 and PDMS‐1913, but those obtained from PDMS‐2955, despite having good tensile strength, had a low percentage of elongation, high modulus, and poor clarity. DSC and DMTA results indicated that regardless of the PDMS molecular weight, the siloxane segments existed as a highly phase‐separated state. This poor compatibility was consistent with the low solubility of PDMS compared to that of the hard‐segment‐forming components. The polymers in the polyurethane series exhibited multiple melting endotherms, attributed to the melting of ordered domains from different hard segments. The combined heats of fusion were similar for the materials in the PU series. In contrast, the polymers in the PUU series showed a hard‐segment order that was significantly less defined, with the heat of fusion approximately a third to a half that of the materials in the polyurethane series. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This work investigates the characteristics of the thermal degradation of poly(ether urethane) (E‐PU) and poly(siloxane urethane) (S‐PU) copolymers by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and thermogravimetric analysis/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG–FTIR). The stage of initial degradation for E‐PU was demonstrated as a urethane‐B segment consisting of 4,4′‐diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4‐butanediol. Moreover, the urethane‐B segment in the copolymers had the lowest temperature of degradation (ca. 200°C). The degradation of E‐PU was determined by TGA and TG–FTIR analyses and had three stages including seven steps. Although the soft segment of S‐PU possessed the thermal stability of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), the unstable urethane‐B segment existed in S‐PU. Therefore, the initial degradation of S‐PU appeared around 210°C. The four stages of degradation of S‐PU involved eight steps, as revealed by TG–FTIR, which identified the main decomposition products: CO2, tetrahydrofuran, and siloxane decomposition products. The imide group with high thermal stability was to replace the urethane‐B segment of S‐PU, which had the lowest thermal stability herein. The poly(siloxane urethane imide) (I‐PU) copolymer around 285°C exhibited a high initial temperature of degradation, and the initial degradation occurred at the urethane‐S segment consisting of MDI and PDMS. The degradation of I‐PU was similar to that of S‐PU and had four stages including six steps. Moreover, the degradation region of the imide group between 468 and 625°C was merged into the degradation stage of the siloxane decomposed products. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effect of chain extender structure on properties and morphology of α,ω‐bis(6‐hydroxyethoxypropyl) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and poly(hexamethylene oxide) (PHMO) mixed macrodiol‐based aliphatic polyurethane elastomers was investigated using tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). All polyurethanes were based on 50 wt % of hard segment derived from 4,4′‐methylenecyclohexyl diisocyanate (H12MDI) and a chain extender mixture. 1,4‐Butanediol was the primary chain extender, while one of 1,3‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (BHTD), 1,3‐bis(3‐hydroxypropyl)tetramethyldisiloxane (BPTD), hydroquinonebis(2‐hydroxyethyl)ether (HQHE), 1,3‐bis(3‐hydroxypropyl)tetramethyldisilylethylene (HTDE), or 2,2,3,3,4,4‐hexafluoro‐1,5‐pentanediol (HFPD) each was used as a secondary chain extender. Two series of polyurethanes containing 80 : 20 (Series A) and 60 : 40 (Series B) molar ratios of primary and secondary chain extenders were prepared using one‐step bulk polymerization. All polyurethanes were clear and transparent and had number‐average molecular weights between 56,000 and 122,100. Incorporation of the secondary chain extender resulted in polyurethanes with low flexural modulus and high elongation. Good ultimate tensile strength was achieved in most cases. DSC and DMTA analyses showed that the incorporation of a secondary chain extender disrupted the hard segment order in all cases. The highest disruption was observed with HFPD, while the silicon‐based chain extenders gave less disruption, particularly in Series A. Further, the silicon chain extenders improved the compatibility of the PDMS soft segment phase with the hard segment, whereas with HFPD and HQHE, this was not observed. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A series of six polyurethanes were prepared to study the effect of silicon chain extender structure on properties and morphology of siloxane–polyurethanes. Polyurethanes were prepared by a two‐step bulk polymerization without a catalyst. The soft segment of the polyurethanes was based on an 80:20 (w/w) mixture of α,ω‐bis(6‐hydroxyethoxypropyl) polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, MW 966) and poly(hexamethylene) oxide (MW 714). The hard segment was based on 4,4′‐methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and a 60:40 molar mixture of 1,4‐butanediol (BDO) and a silicon chain extender. Silicon chain extenders (SCE) investigated were 1,3‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BHTD), 1,3‐bis(3‐hydroxypropyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BPTD), 1,4‐bis(3‐hydroxypropyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisilylethylene (HTDE), 1,3‐bis(6‐hydroxyethoxypropyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BETD). All polyurethanes were clear and transparent with number average molecular weights between 72,000 to 116,000. Incorporation of the silicon chain extender resulted in polyurethanes with low‐modulus and high elongation. This was achieved without significant compromise in ultimate tensile strength in all cases, except BETD. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the silicon chain extenders did not significantly disrupt the hard segment crystallinity, but exhibited a unique morphological feature where SCE‐based hard segments formed separate domains, which may be the primary reason for achieving low modulus without significant compromise in strength. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel fumed silica filled thermoplastic poly(dimethylsiloxane-urea) (TPSU) segmented copolymers were synthesized and characterized. TPSU copolymers were prepared from a cycloaliphatic diisocyanate, aminopropyl terminated PDMS oligomers with number average molecular weights of 3,200, 10,800 and 31,500 g/mol and 2-methyl-1,5-diaminopentane chain extender. Two different types of fumed silica HDK H2000 (hydrophobic) and HDK N20 (hydrophilic) were utilized and incorporated into silicone-urea copolymers in amounts of 1-60% by weight. Influence of the silica type (hydrophilic versus hydrophobic), amount of silica loading and the PDMS soft segment molecular weight on the morphology, tensile properties and modulus-temperature behavior of the nanocomposites were determined. Major observations of this study were: (i) under the blending conditions used, incorporation of silica does not seem to interfere significantly with the hydrogen bonding between urea groups, (ii) incorporation of silica does not affect the glass transition temperature of PDMS, (iii) incorporation of silica influences the tensile and thermomechanical properties of silicone-urea segmented copolymers significantly, (iv) average molecular weight of the PDMS soft segment in the silicone-urea copolymer plays a critical role on the improvement of the tensile properties of the fumed silica/TPSU composites.  相似文献

Polydimethylsiloxane polyurethane (PDMS‐PU), which was synthesized from PDMS as the soft segment, was blended into a variety of ester‐ or ether‐based soft‐segment waterborne polyurethanes with different concentrations to investigate the crystallization, thermal, and physical properties of the membrane formations. According to X‐ray analysis, the ether‐based PUs, synthesized from soft segments of poly(propylene glycol) (PPG1000) or poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG2000), were found to have maximum crystallinity at a 5% blending ratio of PDMS‐PU, but the ester‐based PU, synthesized from soft segments of polycaprolactone (PCL1250), had decreased crystallinity at a 5% blending ratio. Differential scanning calorimetric analysis revealed that the Tg,s values of PUs were highest when the blending ratio of PDMS‐PU was 5%–10%, except for PU from PCL1250. Moreover, ether‐based PUs showed maximum Tm,h values, but the Tm,h of the ester‐based PU was greatly reduced when PU with PCL1250 was blended with PDMS‐PU. In addition, the PU from PEG2000 had the highest melting entropy. Mechanical property analysis showed that the stress of ether‐based PUs would be increased when PUs were blended with a small amount of PDMS‐PU and that the stress of PU from poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG1000) increased to its greatest value (20–30 MPa). On the other hand, the ester‐based PU, from PCL1250 blended with PDMS‐PU, would have reduced stress. On the whole, the stress and strain of PU from PEG1000 had excellent balance. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 102: 210–221, 2006  相似文献

Segmented polyurethane (PU) block copolymers were synthesized using 4,4′-methylenediphenyl diisocyanate and 1,4-butanediol as hard segments and oligomeric ethoxypropyl polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as the soft segments, with hard segment contents ranging from 26 to 52 wt%. The microphase separated morphology, phase transitions, and degrees of phase separation of these novel copolymers were investigated using a variety of experimental methods. Like similar copolymers with mixed ethoxypropyl PDMS/poly(hexamethylene oxide) soft segments, PU copolymers containing only ethoxypropyl PDMS soft segments were found to consist of three microphases: a PDMS matrix phase, hard domains, and a mixed phase containing ethoxypropyl end group segments and dissolved short hard segments. Analysis of unlike segment demixing using small-angle X-ray scattering demonstrates that degrees of phase separation increase significantly as copolymer hard segment content increases, in keeping with findings from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy measurements.  相似文献

A series of thermoplastic elastomers based on ethylene oxide‐poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐ethylene oxide (EO‐PDMS‐EO), as the soft segment, and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), as the hard segment, were synthesized by catalyzed two‐step, melt transesterification reaction of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with 1,4‐butanediol (BD) and α,ω‐dihydroxy‐(EO‐PDMS‐EO). Copolymers with a content of hard PBT segments between 40 and 90 mass % and a constant length of the soft EO‐PDMS‐EO segments were prepared. The siloxane prepolymer with hydrophilic terminal EO units was used to improve the miscibility between the polar comonomers, DMT and BD, and the nonpolar PDMS. The molecular structure and composition of the copolymers were determined by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy, whereas the effectiveness of the incorporation of α,ω‐dihydroxy‐(EO‐PDMS‐EO) into the copolymer chains was verified by chloroform extraction. The effects of the structure and composition of the copolymers on the melting temperatures and the degree of crystallinity, as well as on the thermal degradation stability and some rheological properties, were studied. It was demonstrated that the degree of crystallinity, the melting and crystallization temperatures of the copolymers increased with increasing mass fraction of the PBT segments. The thermal stability of the copolymers was lower than that of PBT homopolymer, because of the presence of thermoliable ether bonds in the soft segments. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Summary: Novel elastic materials were prepared by mixing semicrystalline polyester‐based polyurethane (PU) synthesized at 100 °C with nitrochitosan (NCH) and 1,1,1‐tris(hydroxylmethyl)propane as crosslinker, and then by curing the mixture at 18, 25, 40, 60, and 80 °C. The effects of cure temperature on the crystallization behavior, miscibility, and mechanical properties of the PUNCH materials were studied by attenuated total reflection Fourier transform IR, wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic mechanical analysis, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and tensile test. The results indicated that the crystalline structure of the blend films was more easily interrupted as the cure temperature increased, leading to a decrease of the degree of crystallinity. With an increase of cure temperature, the blend films exhibited high crosslinking density and tensile strength, and the phase separation between hard and soft segments of PU enhanced, resulting in a decrease in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of soft segment. Interestingly, the composite films keeping high elongation at break possessed tensile strength higher than that of the native poly(ester‐urethane). The enhanced mechanical properties of the blend films can be attributed to the relatively dense crosslinking network and strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between NCH and PU. Therefore, this study not only provided a novel way by adding NCH into PU matrix to prepare elastic materials, which would remain functional characteristic of chitosan, but also expanded the application field of chitosan.

Immobilized lipase B from Candida antarctica was used to synthesize copolymers of poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) with α,ω-(dihydroxy alkyl) terminated poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). The reactions were carried out in toluene with a 1:2 w/v ratio of the monomers to solvent at 70 oC. The PCL−PDMS−PCL triblock copolymer composition was varied by changing the feed ratio of the reactants [CL]/[PDMS] (80:20; 60:40; 40:60; 20:80 w/w, respectively). The enzymatically synthesized copolymers were characterized by GPC, FTIR, TGA, DSC and XRD. The successful synthesis of the copolymers was confirmed by the appearance of a single peak in all of the respective GPC chromatograms. An increased feed ratio of [CL]/[PDMS] produced an increase in the number-average molecular weight (Mn) of the copolymers from 4,400 g mol−1 (20:80 w/w of [CL]/[PDMS]) to 13,950 g mol−1 (80:20 w/w of [CL]/[PDMS]). The copolymers were shown by DSC and XRD to be semi-crystalline and the degree of crystallinity increased with an increase in the [CL]/[PDMS] feed ratio. The crystal structure in the copolymers was analogous to that of the PCL homopolymer. In enzymatic polymerization the recovery and reuse of the enzyme is highly desirable. When the lipase was recovered and reused for the copolymerization, higher molecular weight copolymers were obtained upon a second use. This appears to be due to an increased activity of the immobilized lipase following an opening up of the acrylic resin matrix in the organic medium. This improvement was not maintained for subsequent recycling of the lipase principally due to the disintegration of the acrylic resin matrix.  相似文献

A series of eight polyurethane elastomers was prepared using a two‐step bulk polymerization procedure to investigate the effect of the siloxane chain extender 1,3‐bis(4‐hydroxybutyl)1,1,3,3‐tetramethyldisiloxane (BHTD) on polyurethane properties and morphology. All polyurethanes were based on 40 wt % hard segment derived from 4,4′‐methylenediphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) and a mixture of 1,4‐butanediol (BDO) and BHTD in varying molar ratios. The soft segment was based on an 80 : 20 (w/w) mixture of the macrodiols α,ω‐bis(6‐hydroxyethoxypropyl)polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS, MW 965) and poly(hexamethylene oxide) (PHMO, MW 714). Polyurethanes were characterized by size‐exclusion chromatography, tensile testing, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, and FTIR spectroscopy. Clear and transparent polymers were produced in all cases with number‐average molecular weights in the range of 90,000 to 111,000. The ultimate tensile strength decreased only slightly (15%), but Young's modulus and flexural modulus decreased by 76 and 72%, respectively, compared with that of the pure BDO extended polyurethanes as the amount of BHTD was increased to 40 mol %. This change resulted in “softer” and more elastic polyurethanes. Polyurethanes with BHTD contents above 40 mol % were more elastic but had poor tensile and tear strengths. A 60 : 40 molar ratio of BDO : BHTD produced a “soft” polyurethane, which combined good tensile strength and flexibility. The DSC and DMTA results confirmed that the incorporation of BHTD as part of the hard segment yielded polyurethanes with improved compatibility between hard and soft segments. IR data indicated that the amount of hard segments soluble in the soft‐segment phase increased with increasing BHTD, contributing to the improved phase mixing. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Waterborne polydimethylsiloxane‐modified epoxy‐resin‐based polyol dispersions were synthesized by the reaction of 2,4‐toluene diisocyanate with 2,2‐bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid, hydroxypropyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HTPDMS), and bisphenol A epoxy resin based polyol. These HTPDMS‐modified polyol dispersions exhibited a small particle size and an excellent dispersion stability. Two‐component waterborne polyurethane (2K‐WPU) was prepared from the HTPDMS‐modified polyol dispersion and a hydrophilic‐modified polyisocyanate. The structure of the HTPDMS‐modified polyol and its crosslinked 2K‐WPU films (SEFs) were characterized with Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopies. The effects of the HTPDMS content on the mechanical and thermal properties of the resulting SEFs were investigated. The results show that the thermal stability of the crosslinked SEFs was enhanced with increasing HTPDMS content, whereas the modulus, tensile strength, and pencil hardness values of the films decreased with increasing HTPDMS content. Siloxane segments migrated onto the surface during the film‐formation process. The contact angle of the films increased from 71 to 96 °, and the water absorption ratio of the films decreased from 6.6 to 5.0% when the HTPDMS content in the films increased from 0 to 10%. These results indicate that the water resistance of the films was enhanced by the introduction of HTPDMS into the 2K‐WPU networks. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. With the action of catalyst and cosolvent, a series of hydroxyl‐terminated polydimethylsiloxane (HPMS) based polyurethane (PU) micro‐emulsion were gotten by surfactant‐free copolymerization. They were successfully prepared by reacting isophorone isocyanate, poly(tetramethylene glycol), and HPMS with N‐methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) as chain extender and trimethylolpropane (TMP) as crosslinker. After neutralizing with dimethyl sulfate and inversing the emulsion polymerization with deionized water, a series of microemulsions were obtained. The emulsions were then cast into membranes named as PU–HPMS. The mechanical properties and water absorption of the PU–HPMS were determined and simultaneously the effects of the content of hard segment, solvent, TMP, MDEA, HPMS, and the molecular weight of soft segment were studied. It is noticed that the tensile strength decreased and elongation at break increased in the HPMS/PU when compared with pure PU, which confirm that PU was end‐capped with PDMS. It is also noticed that water absorption increased in the HPMS/PU when compared with pure PU. As HPMS content increased from 0.0 to 25.0 wt %, the surface free energies decreased from 0.3446 to 0.2317 mN/cm and water absorption decreased from 11.2% to 0.14%. The surface free energies of the membranes were decreased by more than 32.76%, which demonstrate that the membrane surfaces have excellent water and oil repellency. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel thermoplastic elastomers based on ABA‐type triblock prepolymers, poly[(propylene oxide)–(dimethylsiloxane)–(propylene oxide)] (PPO‐PDMS‐PPO), as the soft segments, and poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT), as the hard segments, was synthesized by catalyzed two‐step melt transesterification of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT) with 1,4‐butanediol (BD) and α,ω‐dihydroxy‐(PPO‐PDMS‐PPO) (M?n = 2930 g mol?1). Several copolymers with a content of hard PBT segments between 40 and 60 mass% and a constant length of the soft PPO‐PDMS‐PPO segments were prepared. The siloxane‐containing triblock prepolymer with hydrophilic terminal PPO blocks was used to improve the compatibility between the polar comonomers, i.e. DMT and BD, and the non‐polar PDMS segments. The structure and composition of the copolymers were examined using 1H NMR spectroscopy, while the effectiveness of the incorporation of α,ω‐dihydroxy‐(PPO‐PDMS‐PPO) prepolymer into the copolyester chains was controlled by chloroform extraction. The effect of the structure and composition of the copolymers on the transition temperatures (Tm and Tg) and the thermal and thermo‐oxidative degradation stability, as well as on the degree of crystallinity, and some rheological properties, were studied. Novel, segmented thermoplastic silicone–urea (TPSU) copolymers based on rather high molecular weight aminopropyl terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) soft segments (<Mn> 10,800 and 31,500 g/mol), a cycloaliphatic diisocyanate (HMDI) and various diamine chain extenders were synthesized. Copolymers with very low urea hard segment contents of 1.43–14.4% by weight were prepared. In spite of very low hard segment contents, solution cast films showed very good microphase separation and displayed reasonable mechanical properties. Tensile strengths of TPSU copolymers showed a linear dependence on their urea hard segment contents, regardless of the structure of the diamine chain extender used. The modulus of silicone–urea copolymers is dependent on the urea concentration, but not on the extender type or PDMS molecular weight. When silicone–urea copolymers with identical urea hard segment contents were compared, copolymers based on PDMS-31,500 showed higher elongation at break values and ultimate tensile strengths than those based on PDMS-10,800. Since the critical entanglement molecular weight (Me) of PDMS is about 24,500 g/mol, these results suggest there is a significant contribution from soft segment chain entanglement effects in the PDMS-31,500 system regarding the tensile properties and failure mechanisms of the silicone–urea copolymers.  相似文献

Synthesized shape‐memory polyurethane (PU) block copolymers were used to prepare electrospun nonwovens via electrospinning. PU solutions were prepared with a mixed solvent of N,N‐dimethylformamide and tetrahydrofuran. The electrospun PU nonwovens were prepared with hard‐segment concentrations of 40 and 50 wt %. The morphology of the electrospun fibers was investigated with scanning electron microscopy. The average diameter of low‐viscosity (ca. 130–180 cPs) electrospun fibers was about 800 nm, and the morphology of the electrospun nonwovens was beaded‐on fibers. In contrast, the average diameter of high‐viscosity (ca. 530–570 cPs) electrospun fibers was about 1300 nm. In an investigation of the mechanical properties of the electrospun PU nonwovens, it was found that the tensile strength increased as the hard‐segment concentration increased within a similar range of viscosities. Also, the tensile strength of the electrospun PU nonwovens in the machine direction was higher than that in the transverse direction because of a difference in the velocities of the drum collectors. The electrospun PU nonwovens with hard‐segment concentrations of 40 and 50 wt % were found to have a shape recovery of more than 80%. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Flexible poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) or rigid bisphenol A (BPA) with diglycidyl ether end groups was linked to polyurethane (PU), which was composed of 4,4′‐methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) as a hard segment and poly(tetramethylene ether)glycol as a soft segment. A control PDMS (CPDMS) series was prepared with an additional deprotonation step by NaH. The spectroscopic, thermal, tensile, shape memory, and low‐temperature flexibility properties were compared with those of plain PU to investigate the effects of linking the flexible PDMS or the rigid BPA on PU. The soft segment melting peaks were not affected by the PDMS content for the PDMS series but disappeared as the BPA content increased in the BPA series. The soft segment crystallization of PU was completely disrupted as the linked BPA content increased in the differential scanning calorimetry results and disappeared in the dynamic mechanical analysis results. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the BPA series increased with increasing BPA content, whereas that of the PDMS series remained the same. The tensile strength of the PDMS series sharply increased with increasing PDMS content. The shape retention of the BPA series at ?25 °C sharply decreased as the BPA content increased. Finally, the BPA series linked with rigid aromatic BPA demonstrated excellent low‐temperature flexibilities compared with the PDMS series and plain PU. Compared with PUs linked with PDMS, PUs linked with rigid BPA demonstrated a significant change in the cross‐link density, thermal properties, shape retention, and low‐temperature flexibility. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of thermoplastic elastomers based on soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and hard poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) segments was synthesized using a two‐step transesterification reaction in the melt. The molar mass of the soft PDMS component was constant (M?nPDMS = 1056 g mol?1) while the starting reaction mixture compositions were varied to obtained copolymers with a mass ratio of hard to soft segments in the range from 70/30 to 40/60. The structure and composition of the copolymers was verified by 1H NMR spectroscopy. It appeared that there was a pronounced molar mass maximum when the PBT content of the copolymers was approximately 60 mass%, whereas all samples were considerably inhomogeneous with respect to the distribution of the lengths of the hard segments. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms showed that the melting and crystallization temperature increased with increasing PBT content, as did the total degree of crystallinity, which was confirmed by wide‐angle X‐ray scattering (WAXS) analysis. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) performed in nitrogen gave subtle differences for samples of different composition, including that of the PBT homopolymer, whereas in oxygen these differences were more pronounced in the way the thermo‐oxidative stability of the obtained copolymers decreased with decreasing PBT content. Finally, it was shown that the hardness depended directly on the PBT content, ie the higher the PBT content, the greater the hardness of the corresponding copolymer.
