Cathodic electrodeposition is currently used to protect the totality of the world automotive production against corrosion. Although this technology is highly competitive, some aspects, as the coverage of salient edges, could still be improved. Special paints containing flow modifiers have consequently been developed. Salt fog exposure on steel knife blades is the most frequently performed test to characterize the protection afforded by cataphoretic coatings against edge corrosion. In this study, a method based on electrochemical techniques, among which cathodic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), is proposed for the special characterization of edge coverage in a faster and less restrictive way in comparison with salt fog spray. The combination of dc and ac measurements is also employed to accelerate the degradation process and to improve the fitting of EIS spectra. In order to validate these testing methods, different kinds of pretreatments and coatings were selected. The influence on edge corrosion of different parameters as the coating thickness and the amount of flow modifier were determined.  相似文献

The relationships between the electrochemical parameters (which can be controlled) and the resulting structures of chromium electrodeposits obtained by electrolysing chromous chloride (CrCl2) dissolved in the LiCl-KCl eutectic have been established. The electrodeposition of chromium under ordinary potentiostatic conditions leads to pure chromium but this is not in a form to provide an adequate protective coating as it is difficult to avoid dendrite formation and low initial coverage together. These limitations can be overcome by the sequential use of a high overpotential pulse to initiate good coverage and continuing electrodeposition at low overpotential to minimize dendrite formation.The structures and morphologies of chromium electroplates were optimized. The good protective coatings that resulted were adherent, coherent and reasonably free of cracks and pores. The macro-and microthrowing powers of the bath were excellent and the high purity of the chromium electroplates led to low (130–280 HV) measured microhardness.This paper was presented at a workshop on the electrodeposition of refractory metals, held at Imperial College, London, in July 1985.  相似文献

The mechanism for the electrodeposition of iridium onto glassy carbon and platinum substrates has been investigated. Iridium coatings were characterized by X-ray photoelectron microscopy to determine their chemical compositions and the morphologies of deposits were observed by scanning electron microscopy. The deposition of iridium on glassy carbon electrodes requires, in a first stage, the formation of Ir surface sites. These sites, generated by reduction of Ir3+ ions for large overpotential, allow the adsorption of H atoms which act as the reducing agent for Ir3+ ions. In contrast, on platinum, Ir electrodeposition occurs readily due to a high Hads surface coverage. The optimal Hads surface coverage for the electrodeposition of Ir on Pt is close to 0.5. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurements demonstrated that the Faradaic efficiency of Ir deposition on Pt is very low (0.2–1.7%).  相似文献
