A graphene oxide@silica core-shell structure (GO@silica) was prepared and embedded into the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to fabricate mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Meanwhile, (3,3,3-trifluoropropyl)triethoxysilane (TFTS) was employed to improve the compatibility between PDMS and GO@silica and create a hydrophobic membrane surface for improving the ethanol pervaporative performance. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) result showed that the resultant PDMS/GO@silica MMMs were smooth and defect-free. Meanwhile, the increase in hydrophobicity, swelling degree, and PV performance was achieved because of the incorporation of the modified GO@silica. The maximal separation factor of 11.43 coupled with a high permeation flux of 223 g·m−2·h−1 was observed when separating a 10 wt. % ethanol/water mixture at 30°C. Moreover, the MMMs displayed a stable PV performance during a 168-h continuous operation.  相似文献

Ethanediamine‐modified zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF)‐8 particles (ZIF‐8‐NH2) is synthesized and incorporated in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to fabricate novel PVA/ZIF‐8‐NH2 mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for pervaporation dehydration of ethanol. The PVA/ZIF‐8‐NH2 MMMs exhibit enhanced membrane homogeneity and separation performance because of the higher hydrophilicity and restricted agglomeration of the particles, as compared to corresponding MMMs loaded with unmodified particles. The effect of ZIF‐8‐NH2 loading in the MMMs is studied and the MMM with a 7.5 wt % ZIF‐8‐NH2 loading shows the best pervaporation performance for ethanol dehydration at 40°C. Various characterization techniques (Fourier transform infrared, scanning electron microscope, contact angle, sorption test, etc.) are used to investigate the MMMs loaded with ZIF‐8 and ZIF‐8‐NH2 particles. The impact of operation conditions on pervaporation performance is also performed. The performance benchmarking shows that the MMMs have superior separation factors and comparable flux to most other PVA hybrid membranes. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J, 62: 1728–1739, 2016  相似文献

Novel polymeric mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) were prepared by the incorporation of different amounts of 13X zeolite into a sodium carboxymethylcellulose (NaCMC)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend matrix. The resulting MMMs were characterized by attenuated total reflectance–Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy to analyze the possible chemical reactions between NaCMC, PVA, zeolites, and glutaraldehyde. Scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the surface morphology, thermal stability, and crystallinity, respectively, of the membranes. Swellings studies were performed at 35°C, and we found that membranes containing 20 wt % zeolite showed higher values (960 kg m−2 h−1) at 17.5 wt % water in an isopropyl alcohol (IPA)/water mixture. Pervaporation (PV) experiments were also performed to evaluate the membrane performance in different compositions of the IPA/water mixture at 35°C. The mechanical properties were also tested, and we found that the optimum mechanical strength and percentage elongation at break were 42.24 N/mm2 and 3.38, respectively, for the membrane containing 15 wt % zeolite. The experimental results show that both the flux and selectivity increased with increasing zeolite content. The membrane containing 20 wt % zeolite showed the highest separation selectivity (5118) with a substantial flux of 0.121 kg m−2 h−1 at 35°C and with 10 wt % water in the feed; this suggested that the membranes could be used effectively to break the azeotropic point of the water–IPA mixture, so as to remove a small amount of water from IPA. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF‐8) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized and embedded into a chitosan (CS) polymeric matrix to prepare CS/ZIF‐8 mixed‐matrix membranes (MMMs) in order to investigate the effect of ZIF‐8 addition as novel filler on the dehydration performance of the CS polymeric membrane. MMMs were evaluated using pervaporation (PV) dehydration of isopropanol (IPA). The synthesized ZIF‐8 nanoparticles and MMMs were characterized by X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and a swelling study. The PV performance of the prepared MMMs with different ZIF‐8 loadings for IPA dehydration was investigated. For the ZIF‐8/CS MMMs, at the optimum loading the total flux increases significantly with low separation factor reduction. The good PV performance of the ZIF‐8‐incorporated CS membranes for dehydration of IPA is demonstrated.  相似文献

Polyvinyl alcohol–tetraethoxysilane–perfluorosulfonic acid (PVA–TEOS–PFSA) hybrid membrane was prepared by sol–gel method through PVA being modified doubly by PFSA and TEOS. With polyacrylonitrile (PAN) ultrafiltration membrane as a substrate membrane, PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane was fabricated by dip-coating method for pervaporation (PV) dehydration of ethyl acetate (EAc) aqueous solution. The hybrid membrane was characterized by swelling degree, static contact angle, Fourier transform infrared spectra and scanning electron microscope. Effects of PFSA and TEOS contents in coating solution on PV performance of composite membrane were investigated, respectively. With increasing PFSA content, the permeation flux of composite membrane increased, while the separation factor decreased. Just the opposite, the increase of TEOS content resulted in the decrease in permeation flux and the increase in separation factor. In addition, the PV performances of composite membranes were also investigated at different feed temperatures and water concentrations in feed, respectively. The PVA–TEOS–PFSA/PAN composite membrane, which was prepared from coating with PVA/PFSA mass ratio of 80/20 and TEOS content of 20 wt%, exhibited the permeation flux of 347.9 g m?2 h?1 and the separation factor of 2218 for PV dehydration of 2 wt% water of EAc solution at 40 °C.  相似文献

In further purification of ethyl acetate (EAC) process, azeotropic distillation or extractive distillation is usually applied. High energy consumption limits the economic profit of the process. In this study, pervaporation separation of EAC/ethanol (EA)/water ternary mixtures using the ceramic-supported polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite membrane was investigated to substitute the azeotropic distillation or extractive distillation. Swelling experiments were performed to evaluate the sorption characteristic of the membrane. Flory-Huggins theory was applied to study the interaction between the membrane and the penetrant. The UNIFAC model was adopted to investigate the variation of the penetrant activity in the membrane. The effects of operation temperature, feed water content and feed flow rate on the PV performance of the membrane were systematically investigated. The composite membrane exhibited high PV performance with the total flux of 2.1 kg·m−2·h−1 and 94.9 wt% permeate concentration of water (operation condition: feed composition 82.6 wt% EAC, 8.4 wt% EA, 9 wt% water, feed temperature 60 °C, feed flow rate 252 mL· min−1). The PV performance of the membrane varied slightly over a continuous PV experiment period of 110 h. Our results demonstrated that the PVA/ceramic membrane was a potential candidate for the purification of EAC/EA/water ternary mixtures.  相似文献

Novel pervaporation (PV) membranes for ethanol dehydration were prepared by blend poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), followed by the crosslinking reaction with glutaraldehyde; the structure and miscibility of the blend membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared, X‐ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry; the results indicated that the blends were miscible. The effect of feed concentration, operation temperature, crosslinking agent content, etc. on sorption performance and PV performance of the blend membrane is investigated. The membrane of CMCS/PVA blend ratio of 8 : 2 exhibited a high separation factor of 2959 with a reasonably high water flux value of 0.14 kg m?2h?1 at the azeotropic feed composition (95 wt % of ethanol) at a temperature of 45°C. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/zeolite 4A mixed matrix composite membranes supported on polypropylene microfiltration membranes were prepared by solution casting method and crosslinked with glutaraldehyde to investigate their pervaporation (PV) separation properties of water–ethylene glycol mixtures. Scanning electron microscopy images showed homogeneous distribution of zeolite nanoparticles within the polymer matrix without any visible macroscopic voids at the zeolite–polymer interface. The PV experiments were accomplished to investigate the effects of water concentration (10–40 wt%) and temperature (60–80°C) on separation performance of the membranes. It was found out that 5 wt% loading of the 4A nanoparticles into the PVA matrix is optimal to obtain the best separation performance. The experimental results revealed that loading of zeolite 4A enhanced the membrane performance [both permeation flux (5%) and separation factor (32%) at 5 wt% zeolite loading]. POLYM. ENG. High-power ultrasonic treatment was conducted during the mixing process to obtain poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/carboxyl graphene (CG) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). Results from X-ray photoelectron spectrometer and thermogravimetric analysis confirmed the enhanced esterification reaction. The increased amorphous region and free volume were investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy. Scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope measurements suggested that ultrasonic could uniformly disperse CG in PVA polymer matrix. The mechanical properties and hydrophilicity of as-prepared membrane were enhanced due to ultrasonic treatment. The permeation flux and separation factor of PVA/CG-US membrane for 90 wt % ethanol aqueous solution were 0.79 kg m−2 h−1 and 860, respectively. For methanol (15 wt %)/methyl tert-butyl ether mixture, its permeation flux and separation factor were also increased significantly compared with membranes without ultrasonic treatment. Due to the simplicity of the ultrasonic process and the versatility of the inorganic fillers, this method may contribute to the design of various MMMs and extend the application of these membranes in different uses. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. TS‐1 molecular sieves were synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. Results showed that the morphology, crystallinity, and purity of TS‐1 were closely related to the Ti/Si ratio, crystallization time, crystallization temperature, and calcination time. The TS‐1 particles were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs), and these MMMs were first used to separate ethanol/water mixtures via pervaporation. The MMMs with 50 wt% TS‐1 (Ti/Si ratio of 0.02) loading showed the highest separation factor of 14.1 for 5 wt% ethanol feed concentration at 50°C. POLYM. ENG. Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blended with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was crosslinked with tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) to prepare organic–inorganic PVA/PEG/TEOS hybrid membranes. The membranes were then used for the dehydration of ethanol by pervaporation (PV). The physicochemical structure of the hybrid membranes was studied with Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT‐IR), wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction WXRD, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PVA and PEG were crosslinked with TEOS, and the crosslinking density increased with increases in the TEOS content, annealing temperature, and time. The water permselectivity of the hybrid membranes increased with increasing annealing temperature or time; however, the permeation fluxes decreased at the same time. SEM pictures showed that phase separation took place in the hybrid membranes when the TEOS content was greater than 15 wt %. The water permselectivity increased with the addition of TEOS and reached the maximum at 10 wt % TEOS. The water permselectivity decreased, whereas the permeation flux increased, with an increase in the feed water content or feed temperature. The hybrid membrane that was annealed at 130°C for 12 h exhibited high permselectivity with a separation factor of 300 and a permeation flux of 0.046 kg m?2 h?1 in PV of 15 wt % water in ethanol. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The high glycerol miscibility in water needs more efficient processes to decrease the cost of dehydration. Water stable poly(vinyl alcohol) based membranes cross-linked with 15% w/w of maleic acid were used for dehydrating glycerol-water mixtures using pervaporation (PV). The membranes were characterized using water contact angle, profilometry, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflectance, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, water stability, swelling tests, and PV. Membranes were treated using dry methods with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV; 162 nm) or ultraviolet (UV)-C (254 nm) radiation and exposed to O2 or acrylic acid vapors, respectively. The VUV and UV-C treatments improve PV performances, increasing the water separation selectivity more than 4 and 8.5 times, respectively. UV-C treatments exhibit a water flux (kg m−2 h−1), selectivity and PSI (kg m−2 h−1) of 0.3, 250, and 87.4 respectively. Highly hydrophilic functional groups grafted onto the surface of the membranes after irradiation favor the selective transfer of water through the membrane. Overall, the VUV or UV-C membrane treatments show great PV prospect in glycerol dehydration.  相似文献

In this study, an attempt was made to pretreat seawater using polyethersulfone (PES) mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) incorporated with titania-based binary metal oxides. Two different titania-based binary metal oxides were prepared, namely titania-zirconia (TiZr) and titania-zinc oxide (TiZn). The influence of hydrophilic and negatively charged sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) polymer as additive of PES MMMs was also studied. Morphological and elemental analysis revealed that both ZrO2 and ZnO were well dispersed in the as-prepared binary metal oxide TiZr and TiZn, respectively.. Thermogravimetry analysis indicated the good compatibility of TiZr and TiZn with the SPEEK/PES polymer. The binary metal oxide incorporated SPEEK/PES MMMs exhibited improved hydrophilic properties with a low water contact angle of 57° ± (0.6). SPEEK/PES MMMs incorporated with 0.5 wt% TiZr exhibited the highest permeability of 3.11 × 10−7 ± (0.2) m/s·kPa. Seawater pretreatment performance of membranes evaluated using natural organic matters containing high salinity feed water. TiZr and TiZn incorporated SPEEK/PES MMMs exhibited 95% rejection for humic acid. SPEEK/PES MMMs loaded with 0.5 wt% TiZr also showed the highest water flux and 87% water recovery within 90 min of seawater filtration. Both PES/SPEEK/TiZr and PES/SPEEK/TiZn MMMs exhibited superior antibacterial activity.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)-based hybrids have demonstrated broad liquid separation applications but separation performances are constrained by the compatibility between fillers and polymer, and thus it is essential to study the interfacial properties of these hybrids. In this work, PVA hybrids with four different porous fillers have been fabricated and characterized with Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscope, swelling and contact angle tests. Swelling results show that PVA has a degree of swelling (DS) of 79% in water but the swelling is compressed after adding fillers and the DS for PVA hybrids has decreased by 19%, 17%, 15%, and 9% for 30 wt% loading of ZIF-8, UiO-66, Hβ and ZSM-5, respectively. For methanol and its 10 wt% aqueous solution, similar swelling results are obtained due to mutual interactions among the filler, polymer and test liquids. Based on water and glycerol contact angle results, the surface energy of PVA is estimated to be 40.56 Nm−1 and it drops to 27.39 Nm−1 after adding less hydrophilic ZIF-8 or rise to 48.56 Nm−1 after introducing more hydrophilic ZSM-5. The high-film hydrophilicity and then large surface energy have rendered methanol/water sorption selectivity of PVA hybrids decrease to some extent or vice versa.  相似文献

Organosilica bis(triethoxysilyl) ethane (BTESE) membranes were explored for pervaporation dehydration of binary and ternary mixtures of ethyl acetate (EA) by undiluted sol coating combined with flash firing. Three BTESE membranes (M1, M2, and M3) were fabricated on macroporous supports by varying BTESE concentrations (0.5, 2.5, and 5 wt% BTESE, respectively) in polymer sols. The membranes were characterized by DLS, SEM, FTIR, XRD, contact angle, AFM, and pervaporation performance to discuss the effect of the BTESE contents in the polymer sol on the formation and dehydration performance of resulting organosilica membranes. It was found that 5 wt% loading of BTESE led to a highly selective membrane for dehydration of EA/H2O mixture. Among the synthesized membranes, M3 delivered flux of 0.84 ± 0.05 kg.m−2.h−1 with a selectivity of >10,000 for EA/H2O mixture (98/2 wt%) at 60°C. The time course of pervaporation dehydration for the EA/H2O mixture (95/5 wt%) confirms the stability of BTESE membrane in the investigated time period of 120 h. Further, the membrane exhibited excellent selectivity larger than 10,000 for separation of ternary mixtures (90/2/8 wt%) of ethyl acetate/ethanol/water and n-propyl acetate/isopropanol/water respectively, the composition of which is similar to the top product of the distillation column used in the industrial esterification process. The best separation performance and excellent acid stability of BTESE membranes in this study suggest that the simple synthesis protocol of undiluted sol coating and flash firing will provide a cost-effective, quick, and efficient synthesis route for practical membrane based applications.  相似文献

In this article, chlorosilane‐modified ZSM‐5 particles were incorporated into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for ethanol/water mixture separation via pervaporation (PV). The membranes were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical performance testing. The maximum loading and dispersion of ZSM‐5 into PDMS were improved by chlorosilane modification. To evaluate the PV performance, the MMMs were used to separate an aqueous ethanol solution. The effect of zeolite loading and operational conditions on PV performance was investigated in detail. The separation factor of the composite membranes filled with modified ZSM‐5 increased considerably versus unmodified membrane, while the total flux decreased to some degree. Of all the chlorosilane‐modified membranes, dodecyltrichlorosilane modified ZSM‐5 filled PDMS showed the best separation factor of 15.8 for ethanol. POLYM. Carboxyl graphene (CG) with two functions of hybridization and crosslinking was incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix to form PVA/CG mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). The membranes demonstrated excellent mechanical properties and thermal stability. The improved hydrophilicity and formed crosslinking structure led to moderate swelling. The membrane crystallinity decreased and the free volume was promoted with increasing CG loading amount. The pervaporation (PV) separation performance for ethanol dehydration indicated that both permeation flux and separation factor were enhanced simultaneously at the optimum CG loading. Subsequently, the permeation flux continued to increase while the separation factor declined at higher CG loadings.  相似文献

In this study, novel polyvinyl chloride (PVC) ultrafiltration mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing high aspect ratio anatase titania (ANT) and hydrous manganese oxide (HMO) nanoparticles were synthesized in order to decontaminate cadmium and copper metal ions. ANT and HMO nanoparticles with various loadings in a range of 5-15 were used in the casting solution of MMMs. The characterization of fabricated MMMs was carried out with respect to the structural morphology, hydrophilicity, and composition by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), water contact angle, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. With an increase in the nanoparticle loadings, the change in other membrane characteristics such as mean pore size, pure water flux, and porosity were also evaluated. The results revealed that the mean pore size and water flux increased at a higher loading of ANT and HMO nanoparticles, while the contact angle and porosity of the membranes showed reverse trends. Moreover, the higher flux of pure water was obtained for PVC-ANT MMMs compared to PVC-HMO MMMs because of the larger mean pore size, higher porosity, and hydrophilicity of PVC-ANT MMMs. In this study, the decontamination of cadmium and copper metal ions in single and binary systems of heavy metals was investigated and the effect of Mn2+ (as an interfering ion) was also studied. The evaluation of the metal ion removal data demonstrated that the affinity sequence of both the PVC-ANT-15 and PVC-HMO-15 MMMs for heavy metal removal was Cu2+ > Cd2+ > Mn2+ in the single and binary systems. It was found through ultrafiltration (UF) experiments that PVC-ANT MMM was the most efficient membrane in the elimination of heavy metals due to the superior ANT adsorption capacity. However, the overall findings disclosed that both ANT and HMO nanoparticles are suitable candidates for the preparation of MMMs used in cadmium and copper decontamination from aqueous solutions.  相似文献

In this study, a novel thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane is developed consisting of a cross-linked nano-modified polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) selective layer on an organic acid-modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membrane. The nano-modification of the PVA layer is performed via incorporating different amounts of the amine-functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs-NH2) into the PVA matrix. The effect of citric acid on the chemical structure and morphology of the PVDF support is also investigated. The performance of the resultant membranes in the nanofiltration (NF) of MgSO4 and acid yellow-17 aqueous solutions is also studied. The results indicate that the modification of the support with 0.5 wt% of citric acid increased the water permeance from 1.59 L m−2 h−1 bar−1 (LMH/bar) for PVA/PVDF to 4.49 LMH/bar for the PVA/modified PVDF membrane. Furthermore, the optimum value of MWCNT-NH2 (0.6 wt%) increases the permeance of the resultant TFN membrane to 4.94 LMH/bar while maintaining a high rejection. Interestingly, the incorporation of MWCNT-NH2 into the PVA layer and citric acid into the PVDF solution results in a membrane with the highest permeance of 6 LMH/bar.  相似文献

This article focused on segregation of low concentration CO2 from CO2/N2 mixture gas by implementing high‐performance facilitated transport mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) in large‐scale carbon capture techniques. These advanced, novel CO2‐selective membrane materials were developed by embedding silica nanoparticles at different loading into the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) matrix using solution casting. In situ sol–gel technique was applied for the synthesis of the hydrophilic SiO2 nanoparticles. The compatibility of filler‐polymer matrix plays a crucial role in the optimization of the membrane performance. The dispersion and interaction of the filler into the polymer matrix were confirmed by thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, contact angle tests, and swelling ratio analysis. Field emission scanning electron microscopy analysis of the synthesized MMMs established the homogeneous dispersion of the fillers in the polymer matrix. Owing to its good compatibility with PVA/PEG matrix, the inclusion of fillers significantly increased the overall separation efficiency of CO2 within the membrane. Compared to pristine PVA/PEG membrane, PVA/PEG/silica membrane with 3.34 wt % silica loading showed pronounced improvement in its gas separation properties with 78% augmentation in CO2 permeability and 45% enhancement in CO2/N2 selectivity for fixed conditions pertaining to sweep side water flow rate of 0.04 mL/min and 100 °C temperature. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
