Because of the importance of the maltene–polymer interaction for the better performance of polymer‐modified asphalts, this article reports the effects of the molecular characteristics of two commercial poly(styrene‐block‐butadiene‐block‐styrene‐block) (SBS) polymers and their partially hydrogenated derivatives [poly{styrene‐block[(butadiene)1?x–(ethylene‐co‐butylene)x]‐block‐styrene‐block} (SBEBS)] on the morphology and rheological behavior of maltene–polymer blends (MPBs) with polymer concentrations of 3 and 10% (w/w). Each SBEBS and its parent SBS had the same molecular weight and polystyrene block size, but they differed from each other in the composition of the elastomeric block, which exhibited the semicrystalline characteristics of SBEBS. Maltenes were obtained from Ac‐20 asphalt (Pemex, Salamanca, Mexico), and the blends were prepared by a hot‐mixing procedure. Fluorescence microscopy images indicated that all the blends were heterogeneous, with polymer‐rich and maltene‐rich phases. The rheological behavior of the blends was determined from oscillatory shear flow data. An analysis of the storage modulus, loss modulus, complex modulus, and phase angle as a function of the oscillatory frequency at various temperatures allowed us to conclude that the maltenes behaved as pseudohomogeneous viscoelastic materials that could dissipate stress without presenting structural changes; moreover, all the MPBs were more viscoelastic than the neat maltenes, and this depended on both the characteristics and amount of the polymer. The MPBs prepared with SBEBS were more viscoelastic and possessed higher elasticity than those prepared with SBS. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Block copolymers of very hydrophilic poly(N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide) (PHEAA) with polystyrene (PS) were successfully synthesized by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization of ethyl acrylate (EA) and styrene monomers and subsequent aminolysis of the acrylic block with ethanolamine. Quantitative aminolysis of poly(ethyl acrylate) (PEA) block yielded poly(N‐hydroxyethyl acrylamide)‐b‐polystyrene in well‐defined structures, as evidenced by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy techniques. Three copolymers with constant chain length of PHEAA (degree of polymerization: 80) and PS blocks with 21, 74, and 121 repeating units were prepared by this method. Among those, the block copolymer with 21 styrene repeating units showed excellent micellation behavior in water without phase inversion below 100°C, as inferred from dynamical light scattering, environmental scanning electron microscopy, and fluorescence measurements. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polystyrene‐b‐poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐b‐polystyrene (Pst‐b‐PDMS‐b‐PSt) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Commercially available difunctional PDMS containing vinylsilyl terminal species was reacted with hydrogen bromide, resulting in the PDMS macroinitiators for the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 130°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4, 4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. By using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PDMS center block and polystyrene terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was controllable; ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in Mn with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR. The effects of molecular weight of macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 3764–3770, 2004  相似文献

The synthesis of triblock copolymer poly(octadecyl acrylate‐b‐styrene‐b‐octadecyl acrylate), using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), is reported. The copolymers were prepared in two steps. First, polystyrene was synthesized by ATRP using α,α′‐dichloro‐p‐xylene/CuBr/bpy as the initiating system; Second, polystyrene was further used as macroinitiator for the ATRP of octadecyl acrylate to prepare ABA triblock copolymers in the presence of FeCl2·4H2O/PPh3 in toluene. Polymers with controlled molecular weight (Mn = 17,000–23,400) and low polydispersity index value (1.33–1.44) were obtained. The relationship between molecular weight versus conversion showed a straight line. The effect of reaction temperature on polymerization was also investigated, showing a faster polymerization rate under higher temperature. The copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, DSC, and GPC and the crystallization behavior of the copolymers was also studied. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate)‐b‐polystyrene‐b‐poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA‐b‐PSt‐b‐PBMA) triblock copolymers were successfully synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Difunctional polystyrene (PSt) macroinitiators that contained alkyl chloride end‐groups were prepared by ATRP of styrene (St) with CCl4 as initiator and were used to initiate the ATRP of butyl methacrylate (BMA). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as catalyst and polyoxyethylene (23) lauryl ether (Brij35) as surfactant. Using this technique, triblock copolymers consisting of a PSt center block and PBMA terminal blocks were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled, ATRP of St from those macroinitiators showed linear increases in the number average molecular weight (Mn) with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with infrared (IR) spectroscopy, hydrogen‐1 nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The effects of the molecular weight of macroinitiators, concentration of macroinitiator, catalyst, emulsion, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP were also reported. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 45:1508–1514, 2005. © 2005 Society of Plastics Engineers  相似文献

A series of well‐defined and property‐controlled polystyrene (PS)‐b‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)‐b‐polystyrene (PS) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom‐transfer radical polymerization, using 2‐bromo‐propionate‐end‐group PEO 2000 as macroinitiatators. The structure of triblock copolymers was confirmed by 1H‐NMR and GPC. The relationship between some properties and molecular weight of copolymers was studied. It was found that glass‐transition temperature (Tg) of copolymers gradually rose and crystallinity of copolymers regularly dropped when molecular weight of copolymers increased. The copolymers showed to be amphiphilic. Stable emulsions could form in water layer of copolymer–toluene–water system and the emulsifying abilities of copolymers slightly decreased when molecular weight of copolymers increased. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Two series of poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) triblock copolymers were prepared by the ring opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) and dibutylmagnesium in 1,4‐dioxane solution at 70°C. The triblock structure and molecular weight of the copolymers were analyzed and confirmed by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography. The crystallization and thermal properties of the copolymers were investigated by wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results illustrated that the crystallization and melting behaviors of the copolymers were depended on the copolymer composition and the relative length of each block in copolymers. Crystallization exothermal peaks (Tc) and melting endothermic peaks (Tm) of PEG block were significantly influenced by the relative length of PCL blocks, due to the hindrance of the lateral PCL blocks. With increasing of the length of PCL blocks, the diffraction and the melting peak of PEG block disappeared gradually in the WAXD patterns and DSC curves, respectively. In contrast, the crystallization of PCL blocks was not suppressed by the middle PEG block. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Combination of cationic, redox free radical, and thermal free radical polymerizations was performed to obtain linear and star polytetramethylene oxide (poly‐THF)‐polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)/polystyrene (PSt) multiblock copolymers. Cationic polymerization of THF was initiated by the mixture of AgSbF6 and bis(4,4′ bromo‐methyl benzoyl) peroxide (BBP) or bis (3,5,3′,5′ dibromomethyl benzoyl) peroxide (BDBP) at 20°C to obtain linear and star poly‐THF initiators with Mw varying from 7,500 to 59,000 Da. Poly‐THF samples with hydroxyl ends were used in the methyl methacrylate (MMA) polymerization in the presence of Ce(IV) salt at 40°C to obtain poly(THF‐b‐MMA) block copolymers containing the peroxide group in the middle. Poly(MMA‐b‐THF) linear and star block copolymers having the peroxide group in the chain were used in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (St) at 80°C to obtain PMMA‐b‐PTHF‐b‐PMMA and PMMA‐b‐PTHF‐b‐PSt linear and star multiblock copolymers. Polymers obtained were characterizated by GPC, FT‐IR, DSC, TGA, 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR techniques and the fractional precipitation method. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel tin‐coupled star‐shaped block copolymer (SB‐B)4Sn was synthesized by anionic polymeric techniques. This new copolymer exhibited two different types: One was star‐shaped polybutadiene‐b‐poly(butadiene‐ran‐styrene) (S‐PB‐PSB), and the other was star‐shaped polybutadiene‐b‐poly(butadiene‐ran‐styrene)‐b‐polystyrene (S‐PB‐PSB‐PS). In this article, properties of (SB‐B)4Sn were contrasted with that of tin‐coupled star‐shaped random styrene‐butadiene rubber (S‐SBR) and S‐SBR/cis‐BR blend rubbers. Physical property testing results showed that (SB‐B)4Sn possessed good mechanical properties like S‐SBR. Rheological study indicated that these star‐shaped block copolymers had good processing properties. Rubber processing analyzer (RPA) spectra showed that the dispersion of additives in (SB‐B)4Sn and S‐SBR/cis‐BR blend rubber was much better than that in S‐SBR. Dynamic mechanical thermal analyzer (DMTA) spectra showed that (SB‐B)4Sn had a good combination of low rolling resistance and high wet skid resistance, which made it satisfactory materials to produce high performance tire tread. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this article, a conductive foam based on a novel styrene‐based thermoplastic elastomer called poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐co‐styrene‐b‐styrene) tri‐block copolymer S(BS)S was prepared and introduced. S(BS)S was particularly designed for chemical foaming with uniform fine cells, which overcame the shortcomings of traditional poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene‐b‐styrene) tri‐block copolymer (SBS). The preparation of conductive foams filled by the carbon black was studied. After the detail investigation of cross‐linking and foaming behaviors using moving die rheometer, the optimal foaming temperature was determined at 180°C with a complex accelerator for foaming agent. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images shown that the cell bubbles of conductive foam were around 30–50 µm. The conductivity of foams was tested using a megger and a semiconductor performance tester. SEM images also indicated that the conductivity of foams was mainly affected by the distribution of carbon black in the cell walls. The formation of the network of the carbon black aggregates had a contribution to perfect conductive paths. It also found that the conductivity of foams declined obviously with the foaming agent content increasing. The more foaming agent led to a sharp increasing of the number of cells (from 2.93 × 106 to 6.20 × 107 cells/cm3) and a rapid thinning of the cell walls (from 45.3 to 1.4 µm), resulting in an effective conductive path of the carbon black no forming. The conductive soft foams with the density of 0.48–0.09 g/cm3 and the volume resistivity of 3.1 × 103?2.5 × 105 Ω cm can be easily prepared in this study. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. The sequential block copolymerization of styrene (St) and butadiene (Bd) was carried out with an activated rare earth catalyst composed of catalyst neodymium tricarboxylate (Nd), cocatalyst Al(i‐Bu)3 (Al), and chlorinating agent (Cl). The microstructure, composition, and morphology of the copolymer were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and TEM. The results show that styrene–butadiene diblock copolymer with high cis‐1,4 microstructure of butadiene units (~ 97 mol %) was synthesized. The cis‐selectivity for Bd units was almost independent on the content of styrene units in the copolymer ranging from 18.1 mol % to 29.8 mol %. The phase‐separated morphology of polystyrene (PS) domains of about 40 nm tethered by the elastomeric polybutadiene (PB) segments is observed. The PS‐bcis‐PB copolymer could be used as an effective compatilizer for noncompatilized binary PS/cis‐PB blends. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

Novel amphiphilic ABA‐type poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate)‐b‐polyurethane‐b‐poly(D ‐gluconamidoethyl methacrylate) (PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA) tri‐block copolymers were successfully synthesized via the combination of the step‐growth and copper‐catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Dihydroxy polyurethane (HO‐PU‐OH) was synthesized by the step‐growth polymerization of hexamethylene diisocyanate with poly(tetramethylene glycol). PGAMA‐b‐PU‐b‐PGAMA block copolymers were synthesized via copper‐catalyzed ATRP of GAMA in N, N‐dimethyl formamide at 20°C in the presence of 2, 2′‐bipyridyl using Br‐PU‐Br as macroinitiator and characterized by 1H‐NMR spectroscopy and GPC. The resulting block copolymer forms spherical micelles in water as observed in TEM study, and also supported by 1H NMR spectroscopy and light scattering. Miceller size increases with increase in hydrophilic PGAMA chain length as revealed by DLS study. The critical micellar concentration values of the resulting block copolymers increased with the increase of the chain length of the PGAMA block. Thermal properties of these block copolymers were studied by thermo‐gravimetric analysis, and differential scanning calorimetric study. Spherical Ag‐nanoparticles were successfully synthesized using these block copolymers as stabilizer. The dimension of Ag nanoparticle was tailored by altering the chain length of the hydrophilic block of the copolymer. A mechanism has been proposed for the formation of stable and regulated Ag nanoparticle using various chain length of hydrophilic PGAMA block of the tri‐block copolymer. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hybrid block copolymers find applications in drug delivery, tissue engineering, biomimetics and bioimaging, amongst others, mainly due to their propensity to form phase‐separated microdomains as well as to the aggregation of their polypeptide segments. They not only enhance control over structure at the nanometre scale but also yield materials that can interface with various biosystems for different utilities. α‐Methoxy‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐block‐poly[?‐(benzyloxycarbonyl)‐l ‐lysine] hybrid block copolymers of varying degrees of polymerization, MPEGn‐b‐PLL(Z)m, were synthesized by N‐carboxyanhydride ring‐opening polymerization and characterized using infrared and NMR spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. Their secondary structures and bulk conformations were investigated using circular dichroism spectroscopy and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction, respectively, whereas thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), derivative TGA and differential scanning calorimetry were employed for thermal analyses. The resulting block copolymers exhibited microphase separation and suppressed degrees of crystallinity with increasing l ‐lysine content and adopted α‐helix and β‐sheet secondary structures in aqueous milieu. The copolymers were also more thermally stable than their constituent homopolymers. Interestingly, the effects of the retention of the N?‐benzyloxycarbonyl moiety on polymer properties proved considerable. The hybrid block copolymers herein afforded hierarchical structures of potential utility in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. © 2012 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

A series of polystyrene‐b‐polybutadiene (PSt‐b‐PBd) block copolymers with various chain lengths and compositions were synthesized by sequential living anionic polymerization and then converted into the corresponding polystyrene‐b‐poly(ethylene‐co‐butene) (PSt‐b‐PEB) block copolymers through the selective hydrogenation of unsaturated polybutadiene segments. Noncatalytic hydrogenation was carried out with diimide as the hydrogen source. The microstructures of PSt‐b‐PBd and PSt‐b‐PEB were investigated with gel permeation chromatography, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR, Fourier transform infrared, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results showed that the hydrogenation reaction was conducted successfully and that the chain length and molecular weight distribution were not altered by hydrogenation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Polybutyl acrylate (PBA) was intercalated into clay by the method of multistep exchange reactions and diffusion polymerization. The clay interlayer surface is modified, and obtaining the modified clay. The structures of the clay‐PBA, clay‐GA (glutamic acid), and the clay‐DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) were characterized using X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The new hybrid nanocomposite thermoplastic elastomers were prepared by the clay‐PBA with poly(styrene‐b‐butadiene) block copolymer (SBS) through direct melt intercalation. The dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) curves of the SBS/modified clay nanocomposites show that partial polystyrene segments of the SBS have intercalated into the modified clay interlayer and exhibited a new glass transition at about 157°C (Tg3). The glass transition temperature of polybutadiene segments (Tg1) and polystyrene segments out of the modified clay interlayer (Tg2) are about ?76 and 94°C, respectively, comparied with about ?79 and 100°C of the neat SBS, and they are basically unchanged. The Tg2 intensity of the SBS‐modified clay decreases with increasing the amounts of the modified clay, and the Tg3 intensity of the SBS‐modified clay decreases with increasing the amounts of the modified clay up to about 8.0 wt %. When the contents of the modified clay are less than about 8.0 wt %, the SBS‐modified clay nanocomposites are homogeneous and transparent. The Tgb and Tgs of the SBS‐clay (mass ratio = 98.0/2.0) are ?78.39 and 98.29°C, respectively. This result shows that the unmodified clay does not essentially affect the Tgb and Tgs of the SBS, and no interactions occur between the SBS and the unmodified clay. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The spherulitic growth rates of a series poly (?‐caprolactone) homopolymers and poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐ poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights but narrow polydispersity were studied. The results show that for both PCL homopolymers and PCL‐b‐PEG block copolymers, the spherulitic growth rate first increases with molecular weight and reaches a maximum, then decreases as molecular weight increases. Crystallization temperature has greater influence on the spherulitic growth rate of polymers with higher molecular weight. Hoffman–Lauritzen theory was used to analyze spherulitic growth kinetics and the free energy of the folding surface (σe) was derived. It is found that the values of σe decrease with molecular weight at low molecular weight level and become constant for high molecular weight polymers. The chemically linked PEG block does not change the values of σe significantly. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 2007  相似文献

This study synthesizes thermally sensitive block copolymers poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(4‐methyl‐ε‐caprolactone) (PNIPA‐b‐PMCL) and poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide)‐b‐poly(4‐phenyl‐ε‐caprolactone) (PNIPA‐b‐PBCL) by ring‐opening polymerization of 4‐methyl‐ε‐caprolactone (MCL) or 4‐phenyl‐ε‐caprolactone (BCL) initiated from hydroxy‐terminated poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) as the macroinitiator in the presence of SnOct2 as the catalyst. This research prepares a PNIPA bearing a single terminal hydroxyl group by telomerization using 2‐hydroxyethanethiol (ME) as a chain‐transfer agent. These copolymers are characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), 1H‐NMR, FTIR, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The thermal properties (Tg) of diblock copolymers depend on polymer compositions. Incorporating larger amount of MCL or BCL into the macromolecular backbone decreases Tg. Their solutions show transparent below a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) and opaque above the LCST. LCST values for the PNIPA‐b‐PMCL aqueous solution were observed to shift to lower temperature than that for PNIPA homopolymers. This work investigates their micellar characteristics in the aqueous phase by fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The block copolymers formed micelles in the aqueous phase with critical micelle concentrations (CMCs) in the range of 0.29–2.74 mg L?1, depending on polymer compositions, which dramatically affect micelle shape. Drug entrapment efficiency and drug loading content of micelles depend on block polymer compositions. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

Reverse iodine transfer polymerizations (RITP) of 2‐h‐ydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) were performed in N,N‐dimethylformamide at 75°C using AIBN as initiator. Poly(2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PHEA) with Mn = 3300 g mol?1 and Mw/Mn <1.5 were obtained. Homopolymerization of styrene in RITP was also carried out under similar conditions using toluene as solvent. The resulting iodo‐polystyrene (PS‐I) with (Mn, SEC = 607 g mol?1, polydispersity index (PDI) = 1.31) was used as a macroinitiator for the synthesis of amphiphilic block copolymers based on HEA with controlled well‐defined structure. Poly(styrene‐b‐2‐hydroxyethyl acrylate) (PS‐b‐PHEA) with Mn = 13,000 g mol?1 and polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) = 1.4 was obtained, copolymer composition was characterized using 1H‐NMR and FTIR, whereas SEC and gradient HPLC were used to confirm the formation of block copolymer and the living character of polymer chains. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of poly(?‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol) (PCL‐b‐PEG) block copolymers with different molecular weights were synthesized with a salicylaldimine‐aluminum complex in the presence of monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol). The block copolymers were characterized by 1H NMR, GPC, WAXD, and DSC. The 1H NMR and GPC results verify the block structure and narrow molecular weight distribution of the block copolymers. WAXD and DSC results show that crystallization behavior of the block copolymers varies with the composition. When the PCL block is extremely short, only the PEG block is crystallizable. With further increase in the length of the PCL block, both blocks can crystallize. The PCL crystallizes prior to the PEG block and has a stronger suppression effect on crystallization of the PEG block, while the PEG block only exerts a relatively weak adverse effect on crystallization of the PCL block. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
