Long-span, prestressed concrete, box-girder bridges are haunched and have a span-to-depth ratio of 15 to 20 at the piers. This leads to slender webs, particularly for bridges built with high performance concrete. For girders with sloped webs and constant bottom slab width, the web plate is normally warped, which leads to web curvature in the direction of the principal compressive stresses. It is first shown that buckling is not critical as long as the web is uncracked. But, if the webs have shear cracks, the slenderness ratio of the diagonal compression struts can be very high so that the moments and stability of the curved struts need to be studied. It is shown that the tensile forces in the stirrups—determined according to the truss analogy—will counteract the lateral deformations of the slender compression struts. The procedure, which was developed for the design of the Confederation Bridge in Eastern Canada, will be illustrated by applying it to the slender webs of that bridge.  相似文献

The Ilsun Bridge is the world’s longest (801?m in total length) and widest (30.9?m in maximum width) prestressed concrete box girder bridge incorporating a corrugated steel web. This bridge has fourteen spans, twelve of which were erected using an incremental launching method, a method that is rarely applied in this type of bridge. To verify the construction safety of the Ilsun Bridge, this investigation focuses on the span-to-depth ratio, buckling shear stress of the corrugated steel webs, optimization of the length of the steel launching nose, detailed construction stage analysis, and the stress level endured by the corrugated steel webs during the launching process. The span-to-depth ratio of the Ilsun Bridge was found to be well-designed, using a conservative corrugated steel web design. Further, our investigation revealed that the conventional nose-deck interaction equation was not suitable for corrugated steel web bridges. As a result, a detailed construction stage analysis and measurements of this bridge was performed to examine stress levels and ensure safety during the erection process. The results revealed that there are essential design issues that should be considered when designing prestressed concrete box girder bridges with corrugated steel webs and that, when constructing them, the incremental launching method should be used.  相似文献

During earthquakes multisimple-span bridges are vulnerable to span separation at their expansion joints. A common way of preventing unseating of spans is to have cable or rod restrainers that provide connections between adjacent spans. Alternatively, dislocation of the girders can be controlled with a link slab that is the continuous portion of the bridge deck between simple spans. Seismic retrofit with link slab should be more cost-effective than the existing methods when it is performed during redecking or removal of expansion joints. Maintenance cost associated with expansion joints could also be reduced. This paper discusses the use of link slabs for retrofit of seismically deficient multisimple-span bridges with precast, prestressed concrete girders. The concept is equally applicable to bridges with steel girders. Analytical studies for typical overpasses were performed to investigate the effectiveness of the proposed link slab application. A simple preliminary design procedure was also developed.  相似文献

This paper presents a procedure to improve the accuracy of the classical grillage method for the nonlinear analysis of concrete girder bridges. The procedure uses equivalent element plastic hinge lengths that account for the actual mesh size instead of using a mesh-independent global plastic hinge length. A thorough review of the results of tests conducted on two 1∕3-model prestressed concrete girders and a 1∕3-model prestressed concrete girder bridge is undertaken in order to model the nonlinear properties of prestressed concrete girder bridges. The purpose of this review is to study the extent of plastification and plastic hinge length development as well as the evaluation of the validity of the grillage method for the nonlinear analysis of girder bridges. An Lp transfer model is used to calculate the plastic hinge length for every beam element of the grillage based on the results from the experiments and other empirical models. The Lp transfer model allows the use of empirical data obtained from tests on individual girders to model the response of a variety of bridge configurations subjected to different loading conditions. The equivalent grillage element plastic hinge length Lgp is calculated as a function of the grillage mesh size. A number of examples are presented to demonstrate the validity of the proposed method by comparing the analytical results of grillage analysis using the Lp transfer model with those of laboratory and in situ tests on full-scale and model-scale prestressed concrete bridges. The proposed approach has a high potential for use in engineering practice because of the simple input requirement and improved accuracy.  相似文献

Extensive research conducted over the past eight years in Canada has led to a concrete deck slab of girder bridges that can be entirely free of any tensile reinforcement. This slab, known as the steel-free deck slab, derives its strength from its internal arching action, which is harnessed longitudinally by making the slab composite with the girders, and transversely by restraining the relative transverse movement of the top flanges of adjacent girders. Two steel-free deck slabs have already been built, in which the transverse confinement is provided by welding steel straps to the girders. This paper presents test results on two other kinds of transverse confining systems, which are applicable to both steel and concrete girders. It is shown that the steel-free deck slab, in addition to being more durable than slabs with steel reinforcement, can also prove to be more economical.  相似文献

This paper describes the implementation and evaluation of a long-term strain monitoring system on a three-span, multisteel girder composite bridge located on the interstate system. The bridge is part of a network of bridges that are currently being monitored in Connecticut. The three steel girders are simply supported, whereas the concrete slab is continuous over the interior supports. The bridge has been analyzed using the standard AASHTO Specifications and the analytical predictions have been compared with the field monitoring results. The study has included determination of the location of the neutral axes and the evaluation of the load distributions to the different girders when large trucks cross the bridge. A finite-element analysis of the bridge has been carried out to further study the distribution of live load stresses in the steel girders and to study how continuity of the slabs at the interior joints would influence the overall behavior. The results of the continuous data collection are being used to evaluate the influence of truck traffic on the bridge and to establish a baseline for long-term monitoring.  相似文献

In this study, live load distribution formulas for the girders of single-span integral abutment bridges (IABs) are developed. For this purpose, two and three dimensional finite-element models (FEMs) of several IABs are built and analyzed. In the analyses, the effects of various superstructure properties such as span length, number of design lanes, prestressed concrete girder size, and spacing as well as slab thickness are considered. The results from the analyses of two and three dimensional FEMs are then used to calculate the live load distribution factors (LLDFs) for the girders of IABs as a function of the above mentioned parameters. The LLDFs for the girders are also calculated using the AASHTO formulas developed for simply supported bridges (SSBs). The comparison of the analyses results revealed that LLDFs for girder moments and exterior girder shear of IABs are generally smaller than those calculated for SSBs using AASHTO formulas especially for short spans. However, AASHTO LLDFs for interior girder shear are found to be in good agreement with those obtained for IABs. Consequently, direct live load distribution formulas and correction factors to the current AASHTO live load distribution equations are developed to estimate the girder live load moments and exterior girder live load shear for IABs with prestressed concrete girders. It is observed that the developed formulas yield a reasonably good estimate of live load effects in prestressed concrete IAB girders.  相似文献

This companion paper focuses on an investigation of improved continuous longitudinal joint details for decked precast prestressed concrete girder bridge systems. Precast concrete girders with an integral deck, which are cast and prestressed with the girder, provide benefits of rapid construction along with improved structural performance and durability. Despite these advantages, the use of this type of construction has been limited to isolated regions of the United States. One of the issues limiting more widespread use is the perceived problem with durability of longitudinal joints used to connect adjacent girders. Four full-scale slabs connected by No. 16 (#5) headed reinforcement detail using a 152 mm (6 in.) lap length were fabricated and tested. An analytical parametric study was conducted to provide a database of maximum forces in the longitudinal joint. These maximum forces are then used to determine the loading demand necessary in the slab testing due to the service live load. Static and fatigue tests under four-point pure-flexural loading, as well as three-point flexural-shear loading, were conducted. Test results were evaluated based on flexural capacity, curvature behavior, cracking, deflection, and steel strain. Based on these test results, the improved longitudinal joint detail is a viable connection system that transfers the forces between the adjacent decked bulb tee girders.  相似文献

The general advantages and disadvantages of steel single box-girder bridges, as well as their particular use in single-lane ramps, are discussed. Comparisons between steel single box girders and twin box girders are presented in regards to cost, adaptability to site restrictions, aesthetics, erection, and maintenance. It was concluded that for single-lane bridge ramps, if the economy (cost) is satisfied, a single box-girder bridge, produced by a competent steel workshop satisfying the requirements for fabrication of fracture critical members, is a viable, and often favorable, alternative.  相似文献

This study presents an evaluation of shear and moment live-load distribution factors for a new, prestressed concrete, spread box-girder bridge. The shear and moment distribution factors were measured under a live-load test using embedded fiber-optic sensors and used to verify a finite element model. The model was then loaded with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation (AASHTO) design truck. The resulting maximum girder distribution factors were compared to those calculated from both the AASHTO standard specifications and the AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications. The LRFD specifications predictions of girder distribution factors were accurate to conservative when compared to the finite element model for all distribution factors. The standard specifications predictions of girder distribution factors ranged from highly unconservative to highly conservative when compared to the finite element model. For the study bridge, the LRFD specifications would result in a safe design, though exterior girders would be overdesigned. The standard Specifications, however, would result in an unsafe design for interior girders and overdesigned exterior girders.  相似文献

Four suspension bridges stiffened by prestressed concrete slabs were designed and constructed on highways in southwestern mountainous areas of China. These bridges are the first applications of its kind in China. This paper discusses the site condition, adaptability, and design and construction features of these bridges. These bridges have single suspension spans between 278 and 388?m and deck width between 14.4 and 15.0?m. The longitudinal distance between hangers is only 5?m, which is relatively small for this bridge type, and there are only two lanes. The dual direction prestressed concrete slabs are 0.6?m deep, and its wind blocking area is relatively small. Dynamic analysis and wind tunnel tests verify that the wind resistance requirements are easily satisfied.  相似文献

Continuous concrete box girder bridges composed of precast reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with a U cross section and a cast-in-place top slab are frequently used for medium spans due to their competitiveness. The service behavior of such bridges is very much influenced by their segmental construction, due to time-dependent materials behavior that makes it difficult to accurately predict the stresses, strains, and deflections at long term. A 1:2 scale model of a two-span continuous bridge was tested in order to study its behavior during the construction process and under permanent loads. Time-dependent concrete properties, as well as support reactions, deflections, and strains in concrete and steel, were measured for 500 days. Important time-dependent redistributions of stresses and internal forces throughout the bridge were also measured. The test results were compared with analytical predictions obtained by means of a numerical model developed for the nonlinear and time-dependent analysis of segmentally erected, reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Generally good agreement was obtained, showing the adequacy of the model to reproduce the structural effects of complex interactive time-dependent phenomena.  相似文献

This paper presents a synthesis of the design provisions of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code for fiber-reinforced structures. These include structures reinforced with fiber-reinforced polymer and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC). The provisions apply to fully, or partially, prestressed concrete beams and slabs, non-prestressed concrete beams, slabs, and deck slabs, FRC deck slabs of slab-on-girder bridges, stressed wood decks, and barrier walls. Test methods to confirm the tensile strength of fiber-reinforced polymer and the postcracking strength of FRC are given.  相似文献

Precast/prestressed concrete sandwich panels consist of two concrete wythes separated by a rigid insulation foam layer and are generally used as walls or slabs in thermal insulation applications. Commonly used connectors between the two wythes, such as steel trusses or concrete stems, penetrate the insulation layer causing a thermal bridge effect, which reduces thermal efficiency. Glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) composite shell connectors between the two concrete wythes are used in this research as horizontal shear transfer reinforcement. The design criterion is to establish composite action, in which both wythes resist flexural loads as one unit, while maintaining insulation across the two concrete wythes of the panel. The experiments carried out in this research show that hybrid GFRP/steel reinforced sandwich panels can withstand out-of-plane loads while providing resistance to horizontal shear between the two concrete wythes. An analytical method is developed for modeling the horizontal shear transfer enhancement using a shear flow approach. In addition, a truss model is built, which predicts the panel deflections observed in the experiments with reasonable accuracy.  相似文献

Composite steel-concrete bridges constitute a major portion of the national bridge inventory. Many of these structures are approaching or have passed their service lives and are in need of repair and rehabilitation. External prestressing by means of high-strength bars or cables attached to the steel beams has been used as an effective technique for upgrading the load carrying capacity of composite steel-concrete girders. While several researchers have investigated the static behavior of prestressed composite beams, few have reported on the fatigue strength of this structural system. The writers present the results of the experimental and analytical study of ten composite girders that were prestressed with seven-wire strands and then fatigue tested to failure. Three methods of extending the fatigue life of cracks were then explored: (1) drilling a hole at the crack tip and installing a high-strength bolt; (2) splicing the web at the cracked section; and (3) increasing the prestressing force of the tendon. The efficacy of the three methods is compared.  相似文献

This paper presents the test results of reinforced concrete slabs strengthened with prestressed and gradually anchored carbon fiber–reinforced polymer (CFRP) strips under monotonic and cyclic loading. To take full advantage of the externally bonded CFRP technique, it is beneficial to apply the laminates in a prestressed state, which relieves the stress in the steel reinforcement and reduces crack widths and deflection. The aim of the monotonic tests was to determine the strengthening efficiency of the new prestressing technique and to investigate serviceability and ultimate states. The cyclic tests were performed to identify the fatigue behavior of the strengthened slabs and to investigate the influence of long-term cyclic loading and elevated temperature on the bond properties of the prestressed CFRP laminates and the ductility and flexural strength of the strengthened slabs. A nonlinear analytical model of reinforced concrete members strengthened with passive and prestressed CFRP strips under static loading is proposed in the paper. A comparison of the experimental and predicted results reveals an excellent agreement in the full range of loading.  相似文献

Interaction between steel cables and concrete is complicated in prestressed concrete bridges, especially in curved prestressed concrete bridges. The most significant behavior of curved beam bridges under the loads is that, at the same time of vertical flexure, torsion occurs on the cross section, which complicates the mechanical analysis to curved beam bridges. Based on coordinating relations of steel cables and concrete (CRSC), the grillage structure finite-element method was adopted to analyze the spatial effect of curved beam bridges. This way, the effect of all prestressing procedures can be simulated properly, including the prestressing loss due to concrete shrinkage and creep, batch prestressing of the cables, etc. Furthermore, it is effective to analyze the integrated behavior of the combined steel cables space out and concrete. The efficiency and reliability of the CRSC method is demonstrated by our analysis system WXQ2.0 developed for curved-skew bridges.  相似文献

Many prestressed concrete bridges are in need of upgrades to increase their posted capacities. The use of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) materials is gaining credibility as a strengthening option for reinforced concrete, yet few studies have been undertaken to determine their effectiveness for strengthening prestressed concrete. The effect of the CFRP strengthening on the induced fatigue stress ratio in the prestressing strand during service loading conditions is not well defined. This paper explores the fatigue behavior of prestressed concrete bridge girders strengthened with CFRP through examining the behavior of seven decommissioned 9.14?m (30?ft) girders strengthened with various CFRP systems including near-surface-mounted bars and strips, and externally bonded strips and sheets. Various levels of strengthening, prestressing configurations, and fatigue loading range are examined. The experimental results are used to provide recommendations on the effectiveness of each strengthening configuration. Test results show that CFRP strengthening can reduce crack widths, crack spacing, and the induced stress ratio in the prestressing strands under service loading conditions. It is recommended to keep the prestressing strand stress ratio under the increased service loading below the value of 5% for straight prestressing strands, and 3% for harped prestressing strands. A design example is presented to illustrate the proposed design guidelines in determining the level of CFRP strengthening. The design considers the behavior of the strengthened girder at various service and ultimate limit states.  相似文献

Bridge performance undergoes time-varying changes when exposed to aggressive environments. While much work has been done on bridge reliability under corrosion, little is known about the effects of creep and shrinkage on the reliability of concrete bridges. In this paper, the CEB-FIP model for creep and shrinkage is applied by using finite-element (FE) analysis in conjunction with probabilistic considerations. Verification is made by comparing the analytical findings with existing test data. More specifically, a time-dependent reliability assessment is made for a composite prestressed concrete (PSC) box-girder bridge exposed to a chloride environment. This realized via an advanced probabilistic FE method. The postcracking behavior of the thin-walled box girder is described using composite degenerated shell elements, and importance sampling is used to improve the efficiency of the reliability analyses. It is shown that concrete creep and shrinkage dominate during the early stages of bridge structure deterioration. This is accompanied by a decrease in reliability owing to the combined action of creep, shrinkage, and corrosion. The reliability indexes for the serviceability and the tendon yielding limit state fall below the target levels prior to the expected service life. Therefore, early maintenance and/or repair measures are required.  相似文献
