This paper describes a differentiated wavelength assignment strategy for the appropriate allocation of wavelengths on wavelength-routed quality of service (QoS) routes with differentiated QoS class and recovery capabilities. The paper is based on the differentiated MPS services (DMS) model as a framework for optical bandwidth management and the real time provisioning of optical channels in re-configurable transport networks. MPS stands for multi protocol lambda switching which is a functional part of GMPLS (generalized MPLS). We discuss here a QoS recovery scheme at the optical layer, at the MPS layer, and at the IP layer, as related to QoS failure caused by device failures or attack-induced faults in dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) transport networks. According to the QoS characteristics of wavelength in optical links and the type of used optical cross-connect (OXC) nodes, a differentiated wavelength assignment strategy that considers QoS recovery capability is also described. We point out important problems that should be resolved in the DMS model for optical QoS routing with differentiated wavelength assignment.  相似文献

A virtual private network (VPN) over Internet has the benefit of being cost-effective and flexible. However, it has difficulties providing sufficient QoS and adequate transmission capacity for high bandwidth services. Given the increasing demand for high bandwidth Internet and the demand for QoS assurances in a VPN over Internet, IP/generalized multi-protocol label switching (GMPLS) based on a control plane combined with a high-bandwidth, dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) optical network is seen as a very favorable approach for realizing the future optical VPN (OVPN) over IP/GMPLS over DWDM. Within this architecture, providing QoS guaranteed multimedia services with a differentiated QoS guaranteed protocol framework with QoS recovery is one of the key issues to implement. Therefore, we suggest in this paper optical-label switched path (O-LSP) establishment and its QoS maintenance scheme based on differentiated optical QoS-service (DOQoS) classes. They are the key components for this DOQoS framework in assuring end-to-end QoS in an OVPN over IP/GMPLS over DWDM architecture.  相似文献

A differentiated optical services model for WDM networks   总被引:11,自引:0,他引:11
This article addresses the issues of scalable end-to-end QoS in metropolitan DWDM networks serving as transit networks for IP access networks. DWDM offering a few wavelengths has been deployed in the past in backbone networks to upgrade point-to-point transmission where sharing is based on coarse granularity. This type of DWDM backbone network, offering a few light-paths, provides no support for QoS services traversing the network. As DWDM networks with larger numbers of wavelengths penetrate the data-centric metro environment, specific IP service requirements such as priority restoration, scalability, dynamic provisioning of capacity and routes, and support for coarse-grain QoS capabilities will have to be addressed in the optical domain in order to achieve end-to-end QoS over a DWDM network. We propose a QoS service model in the optical domain called differentiated optical services (DoS) based on a set of optical parameters that captures the quality and reliability of the optical lightpath  相似文献

The evolution of transport network survivability   总被引:12,自引:0,他引:12
The bandwidth explosion ushered in by the popularity of the Internet has spurred the acceleration in the development and deployment of equipment supporting packet-based services. This-coupled with the widespread deployment of dense wavelength-division multiplexed systems in the core transport network to satisfy the corresponding increase in capacity demand-has led network planners to reconsider traditional approaches to network survivability. Existing architectures for transport network survivability were developed based on a ubiquitous circuit-switched/TDM network paradigm. As tariffed services increasingly migrate from circuit-switched/TDM to packet-switched/DWDM networks, survivability architectures must also evolve to meet the service requirements of this “new” packet-switched/DWDM network paradigm. We begin with an overview of existing strategies for providing transport network survivability, followed by an analysis of how the architectures for network survivability may evolve to satisfy the requirements of emerging networks  相似文献

A practical approach for providing QoS in the Internet backbone   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This article describes a practical approach for providing quality of service in the Internet backbone. The approach considers both technical and economic factors. We first present network service provider (NSP) billing models and how NSPs provision their networks. We then analyze causes of QoS-related problems, and describe a practical approach for providing QoS. This approach makes use of good network design, differentiated services, traffic protection, traffic engineering, and traffic management techniques. The relative importance of these techniques is pointed out. Although this approach largely focuses on issues within a single NSP domain, if multiple NSPs adopt such an approach (or a similar approach), interdomain QoS can also be provided.  相似文献

Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are designed to deliver services for numerous applications such as voice over Internet protocol, standard and high-definition video, video conferencing (interactive video), and data traffic. Various dynamic bandwidth allocation and intra-optical network unit (ONU) scheduling algorithms have been proposed to enable EPONs to deliver differentiated services for traffic with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. However, none of these protocols and schedulers can guarantee bandwidth for each class of service nor can they protect the QoS level required by admitted real-time traffic streams. In this paper, we propose the first framework for per-stream QoS protection in EPONs using a two-stage admission control (AC) system. The first stage enables the ONU to perform flow admission locally according to the bandwidth availability, and the second stage allows for global AC at the optical line terminal. Appropriate bandwidth allocation algorithms are presented as well. An event-driven simulation model is implemented to study the effectiveness of the proposed schemes in providing and protecting QoS.  相似文献

Internet QoS: a big picture   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We present a framework for the emerging Internet quality of service (QoS). All the important components of this framework-integrated services, RSVP, differentiated services, multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), and constraint-based routing-are covered. We describe what integrated services and differentiated services are, how they can be implemented, and the problems they have. We then describe why MPLS and constraint-based routing have been introduced into this framework, how they differ from and relate to each other, and where they fit into the differentiated services architecture. Two likely service architectures are presented, and the end-to-end service deliveries in these two architectures are illustrated. We also compare ATM networks to router networks with differentiated services and MPLS. Putting all these together, we give the readers a grasp of the big picture of the emerging Internet QoS  相似文献

This article reports on design, implementation, and preliminary experimentation of a network architecture that supports quality of service for Internet applications. It gives an overview of the various approaches toward communication networks that support application-specific degrees of QoS. Special emphasis is put on the integrated and differentiated services approaches and on combinations of them. A new architecture is described which aims to bring these concepts closer to practical realization in wide-area networks. The new architecture supports the integrated as well as differentiated services approaches in a smoothly integrated way, and uses the capabilities of an underlying ATM network to realize QoS. The enhancements to the existing network infrastructure are deliberately limited to the integration of a single new type of network element called an edge device. The potential benefits of such an architecture for various stakeholders are explained, and how the new architecture could be introduced smoothly in existing networks by small migration steps, also covering networks based on technologies other than ATM. It is shown that the approach can be scaled up to a very large QoS-aware overlay network for the Internet  相似文献

A major challenge in next generation Internet (NGI) backbone networks based on dense-wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) is the provision of guaranteed quality-of-service (QoS) for a wide variety of multimedia applications. This paper proposes a new routing algorithm called multi-wavelength minimum interference path routing (MW-MIPR) to provide more reliable QoS guarantees by consideration of the potential future network's congestion status. This improves wavelength utilization by choosing a route that does not interfere too much with potential future connection requests. Moreover, we introduce a differentiated routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) mechanism combined with recovery strategy and the proposed MW-MIPR algorithm based on the differentiated service model in the NGI. Simulation results show that the proposed MW-MIPR algorithm achieves a smaller blocking probability than dynamic routing (DR) that yields the best performance among previous RWA algorithms. And we prove that a differentiated RWA combined with a recovery capability together with the proposed routing scheme provides satisfied QoS assurance for each service class in terms of signal quality and survivability.  相似文献

Recent trends in enterprise networks are radically changing the composition of these systems. Instead of having diverse data networks, each of which is dedicated to a single class of applications, corporations are moving to a unified IP (Internet Protocol) Intranet. Traffic demands on these Intranets include delay-sensitive traffic that requires better than the standard best effort service provided by IP networks. As a result, various new technologies and strategies to provide end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) within IP enterprise networks are being developed and implemented. However, current IP network design methodologies are limited in that they can only design networks providing best effort service or else, a single delay constraint for all traffic. In this paper, we discuss a new design methodology for IP enterprise networks that takes into account the new technologies and techniques that can provide QoS. In particular, we identify and discuss the most crucial design issues that must be addressed when specialized queuing-based QoS strategies are used in the network. We describe the new constraints introduced by the underlying technologies and discuss how these factors affect the formulation of the IP Enterprise Network Design Problem. We then describe some specific features and methodologies that have been incorporated into a network design-planning tool for IP enterprise networks with QoS.  相似文献

We propose a measurement-based dynamic random access (RA) code assignment procedure for prioritized packet data transmission in wideband code-division multiple access (WCDMA) networks. This dynamic adaptation process is based on analytical performance results derived for random packet access under Rayleigh fading in WCDMA networks. The performance of the proposed measurement-based RA code assignment procedure with three different adaptation methods is evaluated by using computer simulations. The performance of the proposed scheme is compared with those of a retransmission control-based and static channel allocation-based prioritized packet access scheme. An integrated (physical layer and link layer) delay-throughput performance model is presented for finite population RA WCDMA systems. The proposed dynamic RA code assignment procedure can be used in an adaptive quality of service (QoS) framework for dynamically adjusting the QoS of prioritized RA data traffic in the evolving WCDMA-based differentiated services wireless Internet protocol networks.  相似文献

Quality-of-service (QoS) in wireless ad hoc networks is adversely affected by node mobility, changing network topologies, and uncontrolled medium contention. The paper addresses the challenges in concurrently providing a wide range of end-to-end throughput and delay assurances in such networks. The proposed solution is based on the neighborhood proportional delay differentiation (NPDD) service model. With NPDD, applications achieve their desired end-to-end QoS using dynamic class selection (DCS) algorithms. With simulations in various distinct mobile network scenarios, we demonstrate the significantly better QoS assurances achieved with the proposed mechanism as compared with best effort and strict priority approaches. With game theoretic concepts, we model DCS applications in an NPDD network as selfish players in a noncooperative game. For such games, we prove for single-hop and multihop NPDD networks the existence of an equilibrium, the feasibility of an equilibrium, and the guaranteed convergence to a feasible equilibrium when one exists.  相似文献

A Packet Scheduling Approach to QoS Support in Multihop Wireless Networks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Providing packet-level quality of service (QoS) is critical to support both rate-sensitive and delay-sensitive applications in bandwidth-constrained, shared-channel, multihop wireless networks. Packet scheduling has been a very popular paradigm to ensure minimum throughput and bounded delay access for packet flows. This work describes a packet scheduling approach to QoS provisioning in multihop wireless networks. Besides minimum throughput and delay bounds for each flow, our scheduling disciplines seek to achieve fair and maximum allocation of the shared wireless channel bandwidth. However, these two criteria can potentially be in conflict in a generic-topology multihop wireless network where a single logical channel is shared among multiple contending flows and spatial reuse of the channel bandwidth is possible. In this paper, we propose a new scheduling model that addresses this conflict. The main results of this paper are the following: (a) a two-tier service model that provides a minimum fair allocation of the channel bandwidth for each packet flow and additionally maximizes spatial reuse of bandwidth, (b) an ideal centralized packet scheduling algorithm that realizes the above service model, and (c) a practical distributed backoff-based channel contention mechanism that approximates the ideal service within the framework of the CSMA/CA protocol.  相似文献

This paper studies routing scalability in multi-domain DWDM networks. Although inter-domain provisioning has been well studied for packet/cell-switching networks, the wavelength dimension (along with wavelength conversion) poses many challenges in multi-domain DWDM settings. To address these concerns a detailed GMPLS-based hierarchical routing framework is proposed for multi-domain DWDM networks with wavelength conversion. This solution uses mesh topology abstraction schemes to hide domain-internal state. However related inter-domain routing loads can be significant here, growing by the square of the number of border nodes. To address these scalability limitations, improved inter-domain routing update strategies are also proposed and the associated performance of inter-domain lightpath RWA and signaling schemes studied.

Quality of Service (QoS) has become a very important issue in networking, covering many performance aspects and numerous measures. The deployment of next generation wireless system includes 2.5G General Packet Radio Service (Gprs), which is the packet-switched extension of the Global System for Mobile communications (Gsm), and Third-Generation (3G) Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (Umts) to meet the needs of larger capacity and higher bit rates. AnUmts packet core network is an IP-based network. The Internet Engineering Task Force (Ietf) Forum developed several IP QoS related mechanisms available for IP transport networks. Service Quality Management (Sqm), one component of Telecommunication Management Network (Tun), will enable providers to manage QoS against objectives set out in customer Service Level Agreements (Slas) and will enable customers to compare the service offerings of different service providers.  相似文献

With the emergence of broadband wireless networks and increasing demand of multimedia information on the Internet, wireless multimedia services are foreseen to become widely deployed in the next decade. Real-time video transmission typically has requirements on quality of service (QoS). However, wireless channels are unreliable and the channel bandwidth varies with time, which may cause severe degradation in video quality. In addition, for video multicast, the heterogeneity of receivers makes it difficult to achieve efficiency and flexibility. To address these issues, three techniques, namely, scalable video coding, network-aware adaptation of end systems, and adaptive QoS support from networks, have been developed. This paper unifies the three techniques and presents an adaptive framework, which specifically addresses video transport over wireless networks. The adaptive framework consists of three basic components: (1) scalable video representations; (2) network-aware end systems; and (3) adaptive services. Under this framework, as wireless channel conditions change, mobile terminals and network elements can scale the video streams and transport the scaled video streams to receivers with a smooth change of perceptual quality. The key advantages of the adaptive framework are: (1) perceptual quality is changed gracefully during periods of QoS fluctuations and hand-offs; and (2) the resources are shared in a fair manner  相似文献

Quality‐of‐service (QoS) is a key problem of today's IP networks. Many frameworks (IntServ, DiffServ, MPLS etc.) have been proposed to provide service differentiation in the Internet. At the same time, the Internet is becoming more and more heterogeneous due to the recent explosion of wireless networks. In wireless environments, bandwidth is scarce and channel conditions are time‐varying and sometimes highly lossy. Many previous research works show that what works well in a wired network cannot be directly applied in the wireless environment. Although IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) is the most widely used IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN (WLAN) standard today, it cannot provide QoS support for the increasing number of multimedia applications. Thus, a large number of 802.11 QoS enhancement schemes have been proposed, each one focusing on a particular mode. This paper summarizes all these schemes and presents a survey of current research activities. First, we analyze the QoS limitations of IEEE 802.11 wireless MAC layers. Then, different QoS enhancement techniques proposed for 802.11 WLAN are described and classified along with their advantages/drawbacks. Finally, the upcoming IEEE 802.11e QoS enhancement standard is introduced and studied in detail. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

This article presents a survey on the issues and the approaches related to designing call admission control schemes for fourth-generation wireless systems. We review the state of the art of CAC algorithms used in the traditional wireless networks. The major challenges in designing the CAC schemes for 4G wireless networks are identified. These challenges are mainly due to heterogeneous wireless access environments, provisioning of quality of service to multiple types of applications with different requirements, provisioning for adaptive bandwidth allocation, consideration of both call-level and packet-level performance measures, and consideration of QoS at both the air interface and the wired Internet. To this end, architecture of a two-tier CAC scheme for a differentiated services cellular wireless network is presented. The proposed CAC architecture is based on the call-level and packet-level QoS considerations at both the wireless and wired parts of the network. A performance analysis model for an example CAC scheme based on this architecture is outlined, and typical numerical results are presented.  相似文献

This article studies multi-constraints least-cost multicast routing problem in internet protocol over dense wavelength division multiplexing (IP/DWDM) networks. To address this problem, an individual-difference-based quantum genetic algorithm (IDQGA) is proposed. This algorithm considers individual differences among chromosomes by introducing an adaptive rotation angle step determination scheme and a grouping-based quantum mutation operation. Simulations are conducted over network topologies. The results indicate that compared with other heuristic algorithms, IDQGA has better optimal performance on solving quality of service (QoS) multicast routing problem in IP/DWDM networks and is characterized by strong robustness, high success ratio and excellent capability on global searching.  相似文献
