QoS-aware routing based on bandwidth estimation for mobile ad hoc networks   总被引:17,自引:0,他引:17
Routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) have been explored extensively in recent years. Much of this work is targeted at finding a feasible route from a source to a destination without considering current network traffic or application requirements. Therefore, the network may easily become overloaded with too much traffic and the application has no way to improve its performance under a given network traffic condition. While this may be acceptable for data transfer, many real-time applications require quality-of-service (QoS) support from the network. We believe that such QoS support can be achieved by either finding a route to satisfy the application requirements or offering network feedback to the application when the requirements cannot be met. We propose a QoS-aware routing protocol that incorporates an admission control scheme and a feedback scheme to meet the QoS requirements of real-time applications. The novel part of this QoS-aware routing protocol is the use of the approximate bandwidth estimation to react to network traffic. Our approach implements these schemes by using two bandwidth estimation methods to find the residual bandwidth available at each node to support new streams. We simulate our QoS-aware routing protocol for nodes running the IEEE 802.11 medium access control. Results of our experiments show that the packet delivery ratio increases greatly, and packet delay and energy dissipation decrease significantly, while the overall end-to-end throughput is not impacted, compared with routing protocols that do not provide QoS support.  相似文献

Mobile multimedia applications have recently generated much interest in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) supporting quality-of-service (QoS) communications. Multiple non-interfering channels are available in 802.11 and 802.15 based wireless networks. Capacity of such channels can be combined to achieve higher QoS performance than for single channel networks. The capacity of MANETs can be substantially increased by equipping each network node with multiple interfaces that can operate on multiple non-overlapping channels. However, new scheduling, channel assignment, and routing protocols are required to utilize the increased bandwidth in multichannel MANETs. In this paper, we propose an on-demand routing protocol M-QoS-AODV in multichannel MANETs that incorporates a distributed channel assignment scheme and routing discovery process to support multimedia communication and to satisfy QoS bandwidth requirement. The proposed channel assignment scheme can efficiently express the channel usage and interference information within a certain range, which reduces interference and enhances channel reuse rate. This cross-layer design approach can significantly improve the performance of multichannel MANETs over existing routing algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed M-QoS-AODV protocol can effectively increase throughput and reduce delay, as compared to AODV and M-AODV-R protocols.  相似文献

Efficient routing and medium access control (MAC) are very important for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). Most existing routing and MAC protocols consider homogeneous ad hoc networks, in which all nodes are modeled as the same, i.e., they have the same communication capabilities and characteristics. Although a homogeneous network model is simple and easy to analyze, it misses important characteristics of many realistic MANETs such as military battlefield ad hoc networks. In addition, a homogeneous ad hoc network suffers from poor performance and scalability. In many ad hoc networks, multiple types of nodes do co-exist; and some nodes have larger transmission power, higher transmission data rate, and better processing capability, are more reliable and robust than other nodes. Hence, a hybrid network model is more realistic and provides many advantages for designing better routing and MAC protocols. In this paper, we present a new routing protocol called Hybrid Routing, which is specifically designed for hybrid MANETs. In addition, a novel MAC protocol is jointly designed for hybrid MANETs. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed routing MAC protocols have very good performance.

In recent research, link stability is getting tremendous attention in mobile adhoc networks (MANETs), because of several impediments that occur in a reliable and robust network. Link stability metric is used to improve network performance in terms of end-to-end delay, data success delivery ratio (DSDR) and available route time (ART). Energy consumption, bandwidth and communication delay of major concern in ad hoc networks. A high mobility of MANET nodes reduces the reliability of network communication. In a dynamic networks, high mobility of the nodes makes it very difficult to predict the dynamic routing topology and hence cause route/link failures. Multicast in MANETs is an emerging trend that effectively improves the performance while lowering the energy consumption and bandwidth usage. Multicast routing protocol transmits a packet to multicast a group at a given time instant to achieve a better utilization of resources. In this paper, node mobility is considered to map better their movement in the network. So, the links with long active duration time can be identified as a stable link for route construction. Variation in signal strength is used to identify whether the direction of the node is towards or away from estimating node. We consider signal strength as QoS metric to calculate link stability for route construction. Efforts are made to identify the link with highly probable longer lifetime as the best suitable link between two consecutive nodes. We predict the movement time of nodes that define the route path to the node destination. Exata/cyber simulator is used for network simulation. The simulation results of the proposed routing protocol are compared with on-demand multicast routing protocol and E-ODMRP, which works on minimum hop count path. Analysis of our simulation results has shown improvement of various routing performance metrics such as DSDR, ART, routing overhead and packet drop ratio.  相似文献

A new cross-layer routing protocol, named Dynamic Packet Guidance (DPG), is introduced for Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs). Simulation results show that DPG is quite useful for usage in dense networks of mobile nodes, with medium-to-high speeds, and low-to-medium load. In these scenarios, DPG provides a superior performance compared to several well-known ad hoc routing protocols. The low end-to-end delay and smaller overhead that DPG achieves in such scenarios positively impacts the scalability of MANETs and reduces the energy requirements of nodes in such networks. DPG also shows immunity to failing nodes, as it operates consistently almost independently of failing nodes up to a certain ratio.  相似文献

Efficient on-demand routing for mobile ad hoc wireless access networks   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In this paper, we consider a mobile ad hoc wireless access network in which mobile nodes can access the Internet via one or more stationary gateway nodes. Mobile nodes outside the transmission range of the gateway can continue to communicate with the gateway via their neighboring nodes over multihop paths. On-demand routing schemes are appealing because of their low routing overhead in bandwidth restricted mobile ad hoc networks, however, their routing control overhead increases exponentially with node density in a given geographic area. To control the overhead of on-demand routing without sacrificing performance, we present a novel extension of the ad hoc on-demand distance vector (AODV) routing protocol, called LB-AODV, which incorporates the concept of load-balancing (LB). Simulation results show that as traffic increases, our proposed LB-AODV routing protocol has a significantly higher packet delivery fraction, a lower end-to-end delay and a reduced routing overhead when compared with both AODV and gossip-based routing protocols.  相似文献

Bandwidth-guaranteed QoS service in ad hoc networks is a challenging task due to several factors such as the absence of the central control, the dynamic network topology, the hidden terminal problem and the multihop routing property. An end-to-end bandwidth allocation algorithm was proposed in [Lin and Liu, 15] to support the QoS service in ad hoc networks. However, without exploring the global resource information along the route, the performance of that algorithm is quite limited. In addition, it also incurs significant control overhead. We develop a new algorithm for end-to-end bandwidth calculation and assignment in ad hoc networks which utilizes the global resource information along the route to determine the available end-to-end bandwidth. Our method also employs the topology-transparent scheduling technology to reduce the control overhead. The proposed algorithm can be efficiently utilized in a distributed manner. Both theoretical analysis and simulation results show that our end-to-end bandwidth allocation scheme can significantly improve the network capacity compared with the existing method.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are spontaneously deployed over a geographically limited area without well-established infrastructure. The networks work well only if the mobile nodes are trusty and behave cooperatively. Due to the openness in network topology and absence of a centralized administration in management, MANETs are very vulnerable to various attacks from malicious nodes. In order to reduce the hazards from such nodes and enhance the security of network, this paper presents a dynamic trust prediction model to evaluate the trustworthiness of nodes, which is based on the nodes’ historical behaviors, as well as the future behaviors via extended fuzzy logic rules prediction. We have also integrated the proposed trust predication model into the Source Routing Mechanism. Our novel on-demand trust-based unicast routing protocol for MANETs, termed as Trust-based Source Routing protocol (TSR), provides a flexible and feasible approach to choose the shortest route that meets the security requirement of data packets transmission. Extensive experiments have been conducted to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed mechanism in malicious node identification and attack resistance. The results show that TSR improves packet delivery ratio and reduces average end-to-end latency.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are becoming an emerging technology that offer several advantages to users in terms of cost and ease of use. A MANET is a collection of mobile nodes connected by wireless links that form a temporary network topology that operates without a base station and centralized administration. Routing is a method through which information is forwarded from a transmitter to a specific recipient. Routing is a strategy that guarantees, at any time, the connection between any two nodes in a network. In this work, we propose a novel routing protocol inspired by the cuckoo search method. Our routing protocol is implemented using Network simulator 2. We chose Random WayPoint model as our mobility model. To validate our work, we opted for the comparison with the routing protocol ad hoc on-demand distance vector, destination sequence distance vector and the bio-inspired routing protocol AntHocNet in terms of the quality of service parameters: packet delivery ratio and end-to-end delay (E2ED).  相似文献

How to efficiently build routes among nodes is increasing important for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs). This paper puts forward an interference aware routing protocol called Interference aware cross layer routing protocol (IA-CLR) for MANETs based on the IEEE 802.11 medium access layer (MAC). By defining the node's sending and receiving capabilities, IA-CLR can indicate the interference strength of the link in a real and comprehensive way. Further more, in order to choose the route with minimum bottleneck link interference, a new routing metric is proposed by combining the MAC layer and the network layer for cross layer design. Simulation results show that IA-CLR can significantly improve the performances of network such as the average end-to-end delay, the packets loss ratio and the throughput.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose a new quality-of-service (QoS) routing protocol for mobile ad hoc network (MANET) using directional antennas. The proposed scheme offers a bandwidth-based routing protocol for QoS support in MANET using the concept of multi-path. Our MAC sub-layer adopts the CDMA-over-TDMA channel model. The on-demand QoS routing protocol calculates the end-to-end bandwidth and allocates bandwidth from the source node to the destination node. The paths are combined with multiple cross links, called shoelace, when the network bandwidth is strictly limited. Due to the property of the directional antenna, these cross links can transmit data simultaneously without any data interference. We develop a shoelace-based on-demand QoS routing protocol by identifying shoelaces in a MANET so as to construct a QoS route, which satisfied the bandwidth requirement, more easily. The shoelace-based route from the source to the destination is a route whose sub-path is constructed by shoelace structure. With the identified shoelaces, our shoelace-based scheme offers a higher success rate to construct a QoS route. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed routing protocol outperform existing QoS routing protocols in terms of success rate, throughput, and average latency.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are dynamic wireless networks that have no fixed infrastructures and do not require predefined configurations. In this infrastructure-less paradigm, nodes in addition of being hosts, they also act as relays and forward data packets for other nodes in the network. Due to limited resources in MANETs such as bandwidth and power, the performance of the routing protocol plays a significant role. A routing protocol in MATET should not introduce excessive control messages to the network in order to save network bandwidth and nodes power. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic approach based on Bayesian inference to enable efficient routing in MANETs. Nodes in the proposed approach utilize the broadcast nature of the wireless channel to observe the network topology by overhearing wireless transmissions at neighboring nodes in a distributed manner, and learn from these observations when taking packet forwarding decision on the IP network layer. Our simulation results show that our routing approach reduces the number of control message (routing overhead) by a ratio up to 20 % when the network size is 60 nodes, while maintaining similar average route establishment delay as compared to the ad-hoc on demand routing protocol.  相似文献

Mobile Ad hoc Networks(MANETs) play an important role in emergency communications where network needs to be constructed temporarily and quickly.Since the nodes move randomly, routing protocols must be highly effective and reliable to guarantee successful packet delivery.Based on the data delivery structure, most of the existing multicast routing protocols can be classified into two folders:tree-based and mesh-based.We observe that tree-based ones have high forwarding efficiency and low consumptions of bandwidth, and they may have poor robustness because only one link exists between two nodes. As a treebased multicast routing protocol,MAODV(Multicast Ad hoc On-demand Vector) shows an excellent performance in lightweight ad hoc networks. As the load of network increases,QoS(Quality of Service) is degraded obviously. In this paper,we analyze the impact of network load on MAODV protocol, and propose an optimized protocol MAODV-BB(Multicast Ad hoc On-demand Vector with Backup Branches),which improves robustness of the MAODV protocol by combining advantages of the tree structure and the mesh structure. It not only can update shorter tree branches but also construct a multicast tree with backup branches.Mathematical analysis and simulation results both demonstrate that the MAODV-BB protocol improves the network performance over conventional MAODV in heavy load ad hoc networks.  相似文献

Nowadays, services over Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are becoming more used, and multimedia services such as video-streaming applications are more demanded. Hence, it is necessary to provide end-to-end QoS over MANETs, although it poses a challenging problem due to the ephemeral structure of these networks. MM-DSR (Multipath Multimedia Dynamic Source Routing) is a multipath routing protocol DSR-based merged with a cross-layer algorithm which is able to provide QoS for multiple sources of video over IEEE 802.11b Ad Hoc networks. The weaknesses of the system with plain DSR and IEEE 802.11b have been analysed and work has been done in order to improve the throughput and the final user quality. The performance of video-streaming applications has been improved under high traffic load conditions over mobile Ad Hoc networks.  相似文献

According to the disadvantages of real time and continuity for multimedia services in ad hoc networks, a delay constraint multipath routing protocol for wireless multimedia ad hoc networks, which can satisfy quality of service (QoS) requirement (QoS multipath optimized link state routing [MOLSR]), is proposed. The protocol firstly detects and analyzes the link delay among the nodes and collects the delay information as the routing metric by HELLO message and topology control message. Then, through using the improved multipath Dijkstra algorithm for path selection, the protocol can gain the minimum delay path from the source node to the other nodes. Finally, when the route is launched, several node‐disjoint or link‐disjoint multipaths will be built through the route computation. The simulation and test results show that QoS‐MOLSR is suitable for large and dense networks with heavy traffic. It can improve the real time and reliability for multimedia transmission in wireless multimedia ad hoc networks. The average end‐to‐end delay of QoS‐MOLSR is four times less than the optimized link state routing. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Quality of service (QoS) routing technology, which can find the available route, is an important way to realize the end-to-end QoS provisioning for networks. Intelligent routing discovery, establishment and maintenance, which take use of ant colony algorithm, have been widely researched in the past years. But the ant colony algorithm has two obvious shortcomings, which are low convergence rate and algorithm stagnation in local optimum. As the topology of mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is always changing, the information of network status is hard to collect in time. So the enhancement of the convergence rate of the QoS routing algorithm is quite important in MANETs. Based on the AntHocNet algorithm previously designed for ad hoc networks, this paper proposes a position-based intelligent QoS routing algorithm. The position constraints are added in the procedures of tabu list forming and pheromone updating. Compared with AntHocNet, the proposed mechanism can greatly reduce the convergence rate in the premises of searching an available path with QoS guarantee according to the simulation results.  相似文献

Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANETs) have evolved in the last years into standards in the communication world. By definition, they do not need any network infrastructure to facilitate communication between participating nodes. Therefore, MANETs are dealing with new challenges in the context of ad hoc routing. Simulation techniques are one of the fundamental methodologies to support the protocol engineering process, especially in the early stages of ad hoc network protocol design. In this paper, we set out common criteria that may serve as guidelines for meaningful simulative evaluations of ad hoc routing protocols. We present typical and necessary measures for ad hoc routing in general and MANET routing in particular. As a case study, we demonstrate a comprehensive performance evaluation of the Dynamic MANET On Demand (DYMO) routing protocol using a model we implemented for the popular OMNeT+ + discrete event simulation environment.  相似文献

The design of energy-aware routing protocols has always been an important issue for mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), because reducing the network energy consumption and increasing the network lifetime are the two main objectives for MANETs. Hence, this paper proposes an energy-aware routing protocol that simultaneously meets above two objectives. It first presents Route Energy Comprehensive Index (RECI) as the new routing metric, then chooses the path with both minimum hops and maximum RECI value as the route in route discovery phase, and finally takes some measures to protect the source nodes and the sink nodes from being overused when their energies are low so as to prolong the life of the corresponding data flow. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol can significantly reduce the energy consumption and extend the network lifetime while improve the average end-to-end delay compared with other protocols.  相似文献

Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) are characterized by multiple entities, a frequently changing network topology and the need for efficient dynamic routing protocols. In MANETs, nodes are usually powered by batteries. Power control is tightly coupled with both the physical and medium access layers (MACs). However, if we increase the transmission power, at the same time we increase the interference to other nodes which diminish the transport capacity of wireless systems. Thus, the routing protocols based on hop count metric suffer from performance degradation when they operate over MANET. Routing in ad hoc wireless networks is not only a problem of finding a route with shortest length, but it is also a problem of finding a stable and good quality communication route in order to avoid any unnecessary packet loss. Cross-layer design of ad hoc wireless networks has been receiving increasing attention recently. Part of these researches suggests that routing should take into account physical layer characteristics. The goal of this paper is to improve the routing reliability in MANET and to reduce power consumption through cross-layer approach among physical, MAC and network layers. The proposed cross-layer approach is based on signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) and received signal strength indication (RSSI) coming from the physical layer. This solution performs in one hand the ad hoc on-demand distance vector routing protocol by choosing reliable routes with less interferences using SINR metric and in another hand; it permits to reduce the power transmission when sending the data packets by using RSSI metric.  相似文献
