In studies of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), routing protocols in network layer is an important topic. To date, many routing algorithms of WSNs have been developed such as relative direction-based sensor routing (RDSR). The WSNs in such algorithm are divided into many sectors for routing. RDSR could simply reduce the number of routes as compared to the convention routing algorithm, but it has routing loop problem. In this paper, a less complex, more efficient routing algorithm named as relative identification and direction-based sensor routing (RIDSR) algorithm is proposed. RIDSR makes sensor nodes establish more reliable and energy-efficient routing path for data transmission. This algorithm not only solves the routing loop problem within the RDSR algorithm but also facilitates the direct selection of a shorter distance for routing by the sensor node. Furthermore, it saves energy and extends the lifetime of the sensor nodes. We also propose a new energy-efficient algorithm named as enhanced relative identification and direction-based sensor routing (ERIDSR) algorithm. ERISDR combines triangle routing algorithm with RIDSR. Triangle routing algorithm exploits a simple triangle rule to determine a sensor node that can save more energy while relaying data between the transmitter and the receiver. This algorithm could effectively economize the use of energy in near-sensor nodes to further extend the lifetime of the sensor nodes. Simulation results show that ERIDSR get better performance than RDSR, and RIDSR algorithms. In addition, ERIDSR algorithm could save the total energy in near-sensor nodes more effectively.  相似文献

Tianjin University of Technology and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2010 In this paper the solar-blind ultraviolet (UV) light is used as communication medium for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Three types of single scattering UV communication models are introduced and a directional flooding model is proposed, which are based on the directionality of the UV communication and the traditional flooding routing model. The delay, delay jitter, throughput and energy consumption of the three types of communications of the new model are simulated and compared. The results indicate that the proposed directional flooding model can effectively avoid the unidirectionality and the blindness of the traditional flooding broadcast messages. The energy consumption of nodes in the network is reduced and the life cycle of the network is extended.  相似文献

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have increasingly been used for remote monitoring tasks. Limited capabilities of sensor nodes in terms of communication, computation, and storage, present challenges to protocols designed for WSNs. Due to the severe energy constraint of sensor nodes, among the major concerns is the problem of designing efficient energy-aware routing protocols. Numerous routing protocols have been proposed in the literature. Cluster-based routing protocols for large-scale WSNs have some advantages as compared to a flat network topology. Clustering results in a reduced number of messages that propagate through the network in order to accomplish a sensing task. It also offers improved power control. Quality of Service (QoS) is becoming an important feature of data routing in WSNs. QoS is required for real-time data transmission when the result of a sensing task is dependent not only on the correct sensing of the environment but also on the timely delivery of the event notification to the monitoring center, the Sink. The emergency preparedness and response class of applications, for instance, impose delay requirements on the delivery of event notification messages. Transmitting video and imaging data poses certain bandwidth, delay, and jitter requirements on the routing protocols. Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) are envisioned to improve intervehicle coordination and become a part of intelligent transport systems with an ultimate goal of increasing safety on the roads and improving travel comfort. VANETs may include WSNs that are placed along the sides of roads and provide monitoring of road conditions. Routing protocols for VANETs also aim at satisfying end-to-end QoS requirements. This paper first discusses energy-efficient clustering routing protocols for WSNs, followed by approaches aimed at satisfying QoS in WSNs and VANETS. Lastly, a discussion and comparison of features of the selected routing protocols and QoS-based approaches is presented.  相似文献

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), broadcast authentication is a crucial security mechanism that allows a multitude of legitimate users to join in and disseminate messages into the networks in a dynamic and authenticated way. During the past few years, several public-key based multi-user broadcast authentication schemes have been proposed to achieve immediate authentication and to address the security vulnerability intrinsic to μTESLA-like schemes. Unfortunately, the relatively slow signature verification in signature-based broadcast authentication has also incurred a series of problems such as high energy consumption and long verification delay. In this contribution, we propose an efficient technique to accelerate the signature verification in WSNs through the cooperation among sensor nodes. By allowing some sensor nodes to release the intermediate computation results to their neighbors during the signature verification, a large number of sensor nodes can accelerate their signature verification process significantly. When applying our faster signature verification technique to the broadcast authentication in a 4 × 4 grid-based WSN, a quantitative performance analysis shows that our scheme needs 17.7-34.5% less energy and runs about 50% faster than the traditional signature verification method. The efficiency of the proposed technique has been tested through an experimental study on a network of MICAz motes.  相似文献

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are made up of many small and highly sensitive nodes that have the ability to react quickly. In WSNs, sink mobility brings new challenges to large-scale sensor networks. Almost all of the energy-aware routing protocols that have been proposed for WSNs aim at optimizing network performance while relaying data to a stationary gateway (sink). However, through such contemporary protocols, mobility of the sink can make established routes unstable and non-optimal. The use of mobile sinks introduces a trade-off between the need for frequent rerouting to ensure optimal network operation and the desire to minimize the overhead of topology management. In this paper, in order to reduce energy consumption and minimize the overhead of rerouting frequency, we propose an energy-aware data aggregation scheme (EADA) for grid-based wireless sensor networks with a mobile sink. In the proposed scheme, each sensor node with location information and limited energy is considered. Our approach utilizes location information and selects a special gateway in each area of a grid responsible for forwarding messages. We restrict the flooding region to decrease the overhead for route decision by utilizing local information. We conducted simulations to show that the proposed routing scheme outperforms the coordination-based data dissemination scheme (CODE) (Xuan, H. L., & Lee, S. Proceedings of the Sensor Networks and Information Processing Conference, pp. 13–18, 2004).  相似文献

Energy conservation of the sensor nodes is the most important issue that has been studied extensively in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In many applications, the nodes closer to the sink are overburdened with huge traffic load as the data from the entire region are forwarded through them to reach the sink. As a result, their energy gets exhausted quickly and the network is partitioned. This is commonly known as hot spot problem. Moreover, sensor nodes are prone to failure due to several factors such as environmental hazards, battery exhaustion, hardware damage and so on. However, failure of cluster heads (CHs) in a two tire WSN is more perilous. Therefore, apart from energy efficiency, any clustering or routing algorithm has to cope with fault tolerance of CHs. In this paper, we address the hot spot problem and propose grid based clustering and routing algorithms, combinedly called GFTCRA (grid based fault tolerant clustering and routing algorithms) which takes care the failure of the CHs. The algorithms follow distributed approach. We also present a distributed run time management for all member sensor nodes of any cluster in case of failure of their CHs. The routing algorithm is also shown to tolerate the sudden failure of the CHs. The algorithms are tested through simulation with various scenarios of WSN and the simulation results show that the proposed method performs better than two other grid based algorithms in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption and number of dead sensor nodes.

The US Department of Defense (DoD) routinely uses wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for military tactical communications. Sensor node die-out has a significant impact on the topology of a tactical WSN. This is problematic for military applications where situational data is critical to tactical decision making. To increase the amount of time all sensor nodes remain active within the network and to control the network topology tactically, energy efficient routing mechanisms must be employed. In this paper, we aim to provide realistic insights on the practical advantages and disadvantages of using established routing techniques for tactical WSNs. We investigate the following established routing algorithms: direct routing, minimum transmission energy (MTE), Low Energy Adaptive Cluster Head routing (LEACH), and zone clustering. Based on the node die out statistics observed with these algorithms and the topological impact the node die outs have on the network, we develop a novel, energy efficient zone clustering algorithm called EZone. Via extensive simulations using MATLAB, we analyze the effectiveness of these algorithms on network performance for single and multiple gateway scenarios and show that the EZone algorithm tactically controls the topology of the network, thereby maintaining significant service area coverage when compared to the other routing algorithms.  相似文献

Since the development of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), the limited battery of the sensor nodes has been an unavoidable concern. Hence, to keep the WSNs operational for a longer possible duration, the recharging of node's battery through harvesting the ambient energy from surroundings (for an example, solar energy) has been proposed. In this work, we focus not only on utilizing the energy harvesting (EH)-enabled sensor nodes for routing purposes but also introduce a novel hybrid optimization ROATSA that uses Remora Optimization Algorithm (ROA) and Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (TSA) for energy-efficient cluster-based routing. The proposed work is termed as ROA and TSA-based Energy-Efficient Cluster-based Routing for EH-enabled WSN (ROTEE). Hybrid ROATSA is chosen due to enhanced convergence and exploitation capabilities. To reduce the financial burden on the network, we use only four EH-enabled nodes and locate them at each periphery of the network, equidistant to each other and the other nodes are 3-level energy heterogeneous sensor nodes. The selection of cluster head (CH) is optimized through ROATSA by considering profile index of each node by evaluating them at energy, distance, load balancing, node density, the delay involved, and network's average energy. The proposed work ROTEE shows supreme performance against the recently proposed clustering techniques.  相似文献

In this paper, a Tabu search based routing algorithm is proposed to efficiently determine an optimal path from a source to a destination in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). There have been several methods proposed for routing algorithms in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, the Tabu search method is exploited for routing in WSNs from a new point of view. In this algorithm (TSRA), a new move and neighborhood search method is designed to integrate energy consumption and hop counts into routing choice. The proposed algorithm is compared with some of the ant colony optimization based routing algorithms, such as traditional ant colony algorithm, ant colony optimization-based location-aware routing for wireless sensor networks, and energy and path aware ant colony algorithm for routing of wireless sensor networks, in term of routing cost, energy consumption and network lifetime. Simulation results, for various random generated networks, demonstrate that the TSRA, obtains more balanced transmission among the node, reduces the energy consumption and cost of the routing, and extends the network lifetime.  相似文献

In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), clustering has been shown to be an efficient technique to improve scalability and network lifetime. In clustered networks, clustering creates unequal load distribution among cluster heads (CHs) and cluster member (CM) nodes. As a result, the entire network is subject to premature death because of the deficient active nodes within the network. In this paper, we present clustering‐based routing algorithms that can balance out the trade‐off between load distribution and network lifetime “green cluster‐based routing scheme.” This paper proposes a new energy‐aware green cluster‐based routing algorithm to preventing premature death of large‐scale dense WSNs. To deal with the uncertainty present in network information, a fuzzy rule‐based node classification model is proposed for clustering. Its primary benefits are flexibility in selecting effective CHs, reliability in distributing CHs overload among the other nodes, and reducing communication overhead and cluster formation time in highly dense areas. In addition, we propose a routing scheme that balances the load among sensors. The proposed scheme is evaluated through simulations to compare our scheme with the existing algorithms available in the literature. The numerical results show the relevance and improved efficiency of our scheme.  相似文献

Designing energy efficient communication protocols for wireless sensor networks (WSNs) to conserve the sensors' energy is one of the prime concerns. Clustering in WSNs significantly reduces the energy consumption in which the nodes are organized in clusters, each having a cluster head (CH). The CHs collect data from their cluster members and transmit it to the base station via a single or multihop communication. The main issue in such mechanism is how to associate the nodes to CHs and how to route the data of CHs so that the overall load on CHs are balanced. Since the sensor nodes operate autonomously, the methods designed for WSNs should be of distributed nature, i.e., each node should run it using its local information only. Considering these issues, we propose a distributed multiobjective‐based clustering method to assign a sensor node to appropriate CH so that the load is balanced. We also propose an energy‐efficient routing algorithm to balance the relay load among the CHs. In case any CH dies, we propose a recovery strategy for its cluster members. All our proposed methods are completely distributed in nature. Simulation results demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm in terms of energy consumption and hence prolonging the network lifetime. We compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with some existing algorithms in terms of number of alive nodes, network lifetime, energy efficiency, and energy population.  相似文献

Energy conserving of sensor nodes is the most crucial issue in the design of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). In a cluster based routing approach, cluster heads (CHs) cooperate with each other to forward their data to the base station (BS) via multi-hop routing. In this process, CHs closer to the BS are burdened with heavier relay traffic and tend to die prematurely which causes network partition is popularly known as a hot spot problem. To mitigate the hot spot problem, in this paper, we propose unequal clustering and routing algorithms based on novel chemical reaction optimization (nCRO) paradigm, we jointly call these algorithms as novel CRO based unequal clustering and routing algorithms (nCRO-UCRA). In clustering, we partition the network into unequal clusters such that smaller size clusters near to the sink and larger size clusters relatively far away from the sink. For this purpose, we develop the CH selection algorithm based on nCRO paradigm and assign the non-cluster head sensor nodes to the CHs based on derived cost function. Then, a routing algorithm is presented which is also based on nCRO based approach. All these algorithms are developed with the efficient schemes of molecular structure encoding and novel potential energy functions. The nCRO-UCRA is simulated extensively on various scenarios of WSNs and varying number of sensors and the CHs. The results are compared with some existing algorithms and original CRO based algorithm called as CRO-UCRA to show the superiority in terms of various performance metrics like residual energy, network lifetime, number of alive nodes, data packets received by the BS and convergence rate.  相似文献

A typical application field of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is the collection of environmental data, which is sent to a base station. Routing protocols are needed to efficiently direct the information flows to the base station. Since sensor nodes have strict energy constraints, data gathering and communication schemes for WSNs need to be designed for an efficient utilization of the available resources. An emergency management scenario is investigated, where a sensor network is deployed as virtual lifeline for fire fighters entering a building. Besides of supporting their navigation, the virtual lifeline is also used for two further purposes. First it enables the exchange of short voice messages between fire fighter and command post. For this, a fast and reliable routing protocol (EMRO) has been developed based on a broadcasting scheme. Second, measuring data, like temperature and gas, in the environment and informing fire fighters and command post about it, is of high importance. For this purpose a network coding based data gathering algorithm has been designed. The feasibility of simultaneously using the virtual lifeline for data gathering and communication and thus the coexistence of a classical routing protocol with a network coding scheme is studied in this paper by means of simulation and real experiments. The resilience to packet loss and node failure, as well as the transmission delay are investigated by means of short voice messages for the communication part and temperature readings for data gathering.  相似文献

The technical growth in the field of the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has resulted in the process of collecting and forwarding the massive data between the nodes, which was a major challenge to the WSNs as it is associated with greater energy loss and delay. This resulted in the establishment of a routing protocol for the optimal selection of the multipath to progress the routing in WSNs. This paper proposes an energy‐efficient routing in WSNs using the hybrid optimization algorithm, cat–salp swarm algorithm (C‐SSA), which chooses the optimal hops in progressing the routing. Initially, the cluster heads (CHs) are selected using the low‐energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH) protocol that minimizes the traffic in the network. The CHs are engaged in the multihop routing, and the selection of the optimal paths is based on the proposed hybrid optimization, which chooses the optimal hops based on the energy constraints, such as energy, delay, intercluster distance, intracluster distance, link lifetime, delay, and distance. The simulation results prove that the proposed routing protocol acquired minimal delay of 0.3165 with 50 nodes and two hops, maximal energy of 0.1521 with 50 nodes and three hops, maximal number of the alive nodes as 39 with 100 nodes and two hops, and average throughput of 0.9379 with 100 nodes and three hops.  相似文献

Reducing the energy consumption of network nodes is one of the most important problems for routing in wireless sensor networks because of the battery limitation in each sensor. This paper presents a new ant colony optimization based routing algorithm that uses special parameters in its competency function for reducing energy consumption of network nodes. In this new proposed algorithm called life time aware routing algorithm for wireless sensor networks (LTAWSN), a new pheromone update operator was designed to integrate energy consumption and hops into routing choice. Finally, with the results of the multiple simulations we were able to show that LTAWSN, in comparison with the previous ant colony based routing algorithm, energy aware ant colony routing algorithms for the routing of wireless sensor networks, ant colony optimization-based location-aware routing algorithm for wireless sensor networks and traditional ant colony algorithm, increase the efficiency of the system, obtains more balanced transmission among the nodes and reduce the energy consumption of the routing and extends the network lifetime.  相似文献

Opportunistic routing (OR) could adapt to dynamic wireless sensor networks (WSNs) because of its inherent broadcast nature. Most of the existing OR protocols focus on the variations of propagation environment which are caused by channel fading. However, a few works deal with the dynamic scenario with mobile nodes. In this paper, a mobile node (MN) aware OR (MN-OR) is proposed and applied to a WSN in the high-speed railway scenario where the destination node is deployed inside a high speed moving train, and the MN-OR not only considers the mobility of node but also utilizes the candidate waiting time induced by the timer-based coordination scheme. Specifically, to reduce the number of duplicate transmissions and mitigate the delay of information transmission, a new selection strategy of the candidate forwarders is presented. In addition, two priority assignment methods of the candidate forwarders are proposed for the general relay nodes (GRNs) and the rail-side nodes (RSNs) according to their different routing requirements. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed MN-OR protocol can achieve better network performances compared with some existing routing schemes such as the well-known Ad-hoc on-demand distance vector routing (AODV) and the extremely opportunistic routing (ExOR) protocols.  相似文献
