Summary Type A and Type B women assessed by a newly developed German questionnaire need for control (NC) were compared with respect to time-pressured information processing performance and to simultaneously recorded psychophysiological reactivity. The task was computer controlled, monetarily reinforced and subject paced. The physiological measurements included the cardiovascular parameters, ECG and finger plethysmographic amplitudes and the noncardiovascular parameters, EMG (frontal muscle), skin conductance reactivity, and respiration. NC-Type A and Type B women did not differ in performance, but the Type As showed stronger vasoconstrictive responses to the task than did the Type Bs. Other physiological intergroup differences were not seen. In addition, the Type As scored significantly higher in nervousness and irritability and marginally higher in depression, reactive aggressivity and neuroticism than did the Type Bs. This particular pattern of NC-Type A/B differences is discussed with regard to relevant differences observed by other studies between SI and JAS Type As and Bs.  相似文献

B chromosomes (Bs) are dispensable components of the genome exhibiting non-Mendelian inheritance and have been widely reported on over several thousand eukaryotes, but still remain an evolutionary mystery ever since their first discovery over a century ago [1]. Recent advances in genome analysis have significantly improved our knowledge on the origin and composition of Bs in the last few years. In contrast to the prevalent view that Bs do not harbor genes, recent analysis revealed that Bs of sequenced species are rich in gene-derived sequences. We summarize the latest findings on supernumerary chromosomes with a special focus on the origin, DNA composition, and the non-Mendelian accumulation mechanism of Bs.  相似文献

Summary Polygraphic monitoring of several physiological variables was done throughout an experiment investigating the effects of caffeine on mental performance. The experiment started with a mental maze learning task. Then the subjects were given the test beverages according to the group design (CC group (N=16)300 mg caffeine in decaffeinated coffee, DC group (N=16): decaffeinated coffee, WW group (N=8): warm water, and NB group (N=8): no beverage). The experiment continued with a letter cancellation task which was followed by a second mental maze learning task. The caffeine treated subjects differed from the other groups by increased regularity of letter cancellation performance, as indicated by decreases in intraindividual variance. They also differed from the other groups by a slight but significant acrodermal vasoconstriction. No intergroup differences were obtained for mental maze learning, heart rate, respiration, muscle tension, and skin conductance. The results suggest therefore that the drug at this dose level improves behavioral routine and speed rather than cognitive functions and that the vegetative side effects are minimal.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to identify candidate genes for visceral obesity by screening for genes strongly differentially expressed between human subcutaneous and visceral adipose depots. A cDNA microarray with human adipose-derived cDNAs was used as an initial screening to identify genes that are potentially differentially expressed between human subcutaneous and visceral abdominal fat tissues. For the two best candidates, carboxypeptidase E (CPE) and thrombospondin-1 (THBS1) (EST N72406), real-time RT-PCR was performed to confirm their depot specific expression in extremely obese individuals. Both genes appeared to be strongly differentially expressed, having a higher expression in the visceral depot than in the subcutaneous one. For THBS1, the difference in expression between the depots was greater in women than in men. The involvement of CPE and THBS1 in obesity allows us to suggest that the physiological processes controlled by these genes contribute to depot and gender-related differences in the metabolic complications of obesity. In rat, histamine metabolism is altered by some nonspecific inhibitors of monoamine oxidase (MAO) such as iproniazid, and, to a lesser extent, tranylcypromine. Type A MAO inhibitors, such as clorgyline and MD780515, do not seem to interfere with the metabolism of histamine. Deprenyl, a type B MAO inhibitor, shows some inhibition which is, however, much lower than that observed with iproniazid. The strong effect of iproniazid is probably due to its DAO inhibiting properties.  相似文献

Axillary 5 alpha-androst-16-en-3-one (5 alpha-androstenone) levels were found to be significantly higher in men than in women but do not vary between left and right axillae, are not related to age, handedness or degree of hirsutism (in women) nor to anosmia to this steroid. In men (but not in women), levels are related linearly to axillary cholesterol concentrations but not to squalene. Olfactory thresholds for 5 alpha-androstenone varied widely, the lowest recorded being 0.2 ppb, but there was no difference in thresholds between men and women. Women (70%) found the smell 'repellant' but anosmia did not differ greatly between men and women (9-20%). Anosmia to the smell of 5 alpha-androst-16-en-3 alpha-ol was most marked in women (90%) rather than in men (45%). Axillary 5 alpha-androstenone values were generally consistent with the 'musky' or 'strong' smells of male axillary extracts, compared with the 'sweet' smell of those from female subjects.  相似文献

A judgemental control task was framed as a problem of medical decision making. The control parameter of a recursive system (i.e. a patient) was initially set so that output (i.e. a diagnostic index) fell outside a designated criterion range (corresponding to health). Subjects were told to bring the system's output into the designated range by resetting this control parameter (by specifying the dose of a drug). After each of these control responses, they made a probabilistic forecast that it would have the desired effect. It was found that these forecasts were more overconfident when the control task was more difficult but that the reason for this varied. When difficulty was manipulated across subjects, there was little evidence that lower control performance was associated with any lowering of the probabilistic forecasts. When difficulty was manipulated within subjects, they did lower their forecasts for more difficult task variants but did so insufficiently. In fact, relations between probabilistic forecasts of control response efficacy and proportion of those responses that were actually effective was linear with a slope of 0.44.  相似文献

Summary Several physiological parameters were measured in hairless mice maintained on a diet supplemented with antioxidants. Comparisons to animals on control diet revealed higher water-soluble antioxidant content of skin and increased liver weight. Recent models of energetically efficient division of labor in eusocial insects predict that risky tasks will be performed by workers with low nutrient content. We measured changes in workers' nutrient stores (chloroform: methanol extractable lipids) in relation to age-based division of labor in the eusocial waspPolybia occidentalis to test this prediction. Distributions of age of first performance differed among task sets; tasks at increasing distance from the nest interior were performed later in life. However, individuals varied in the rate of passage through the task sequence. Weight of extractable lipids, corrected for differences in body weight, decreased with time elapsed since first performance of tasks outside the nest. Lipid content had a weaker negative relationship with adult age. Therefore, patterns of lipid decrease reflected individual differences in age polyethism. Age-based division of labor, with performance of risky tasks delayed until late in life by workers with depleted nutrient stores, may have evolved as an energy saving mechanism for insect colonies.  相似文献

A simulation model of a real electricity supply undertaking was used to provide a financial performance measure for growth curve forecasting models. The impact on financial performance was determined when changes were made in (1) the method of estimating the model parameters, (2) the period between re-estimations, (3) the growth curve fitted and (4) the amount of smoothing of the demand time-series. The response to variation of the parameter review period was found to behave surprisingly, in that it exhibited different signs for two different estimation methods. Changes in re-estimation period explained somewhat more of the variation in performance than did a change in growth curve. Correcting the demand series for conditions which were known to be abnormal improved performance.  相似文献

Summary Scopolamine was administered orally to volunteers who were required to learn a digit memory task and a tactile maze task. Comparison of their performance with that under control drugs suggests that blockage of central cholinergic synapses may have a larger effect on spatial memory than on nonspatial memory. Summary Roman high-avoidance (RHA/Verh) rats, food-deprived (F-D) for 5 days, had higher stomach lesion scores than did F-D Roman low-avoidance (RLA/Verh) rats. F-D RLA/Verh rats which were injected i.p. with phenylbutazone (PBZ) 24 h before examination, however, had higher scores than did PBZ-treated, F-D RHA/-Verh rats. Histologically, extensive edema and cellular infiltration (including numerous erythrocytes) were seen below lesions, in the submucosa, denoting vascular damage. An attenuating influence of food on the ulcerogenic effects of PBZ, which were much more severe in F-D than in fed rats was also indicated.The authors thank K. Bättig and J. R. Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamine) was administered orally (3 mg/day) to 9 healthy subjects for 4 weeks. Nocturnal melatonin levels after exposure to bright light (ca. 2500 lx) were determined, as well as the levels of plasma melatonin over 24 h. The timing of sleep was also recorded. Vitamin B12 was given blind to the subjects and crossed over with placebo. We found that the 24-h melatlonin rhythm was significantly phase-advanced (1.1. h) in the vitamin B12 trial as compared with that in the placebo trial. In addition, the 24-h mean of plasma melatonin level was much lower in the vitamin B12 traial than with the placebo. Furthermore, the nocturnal melatonin levels during bright light exposure were significantly lower in the vitamin B12 trial than with the placebo. On the other hand, vitamin B12 did not affect the timing of sleep. These findings raise the possibility that vitamin B12 phase-advances the human circadian rhythm by increasing the light sensitivity of the circadian clock.  相似文献

The PREPL (previously called KIAA0436) gene encodes a putative serine peptidase from the prolyl oligopeptidase family. A chromosomal deletion involving the PREPL gene leads to a severe syndrome with multiple symptoms. Homology with oligopeptidase B suggested that the enzyme cleaves after an arginine or lysine residue. Several PREPL splice variants have been identified, and a 638-residue variant (PREPL A) was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. Its secondary structure was similar to that of oligopeptidase B, but differential-scanning calorimetry indicated a higher conformational stability. Dimerization may account for the enhanced stability. Unexpectedly, the PREPL A protein did not cleave peptide substrates containing a P1 basic residue, but did slowly hydrolyse an activated ester substrate, and reacted with diisopropyl fluorophosphate. These results indicated that the catalytic serine is a reactive residue. However, the negligible hydrolytic activity suggests that the function of PREPL A is different from that of the other members of the prolyl oligopeptidase family.  相似文献

Others, however, have reported impairment of memory after morphine injections. To investigate the extent to which this may be due to different experimental parameters, foot-shock intensity and dosage of morphine were systematically varied in a passive-avoidance task. It was found that post-trial administration of medium and relatively high doses of morphine facilitate retention performance following moderate levels of foot-shock. Summary Urinary melatonin excretion is lower in East-Asian (Japanese) than in North-American (whites of mixed ethnic origin) women. Moreover, a statistically significant circadian rhythm is demonstrated by population-mean cosinor in the data pool from both groups of women. Furthermore, statistical significance characterizes interactions of effects from geographic differences (between ethnic groups) with temporal factors.
