Conclusions The decrease of circulating blood volume, resulting in oligemic hypotension, may evoke in anaesthetized cat the active constrictory coronary vessel responses of 2 types, one occuring immediately after start of the hypotension and the other having a significantly prolonged latency.

Conclusion Changes of the vessel capacity resulted from the pressor synocarotid reflexes, intestinal chemoreflexes and reflexes from the right atrium or ventricle and electric stimulation of the somatic nerve afferents can be either similarly or differently directed as compared with the responses of the resistance vessels.

Summary 5- and 5-androstane-17-ol-3-one-17-acetate have been prepared from 5-androstane-6, 17-diol-3-one-17-acetate by a synthesis involving directedHuang-Minlon-reduction.Separation of 5-androstane-17-ol-3-one from its 5-isomer could readily be achieved by crystallisation of their 3-ethylenketals from acetone.     

The antifertility action of α-chlorohydrin: metabolism by rat and boar sperm

Summary The male antifertility agent -chlorohydrin (I) is metabolized by rat and boar sperm to -chloroactaldehyde (III), -chlorolactate (IV) and Cl^– and not to the proposed active metabolite, -chlorohydrin-1-phosphate (III). It is proposed that -chlorolactaldehyde is produced intracellularly by a specific enzyme and that this is the metabolite responsible for the species-specific antifertility activity of -chlorohydrin.This work was supported by The National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia.     

Additional lectin receptors in galactans from the albumin gland of theAchatina fulica snail

Summary The lectin receptor-site specificity of a purified galactan from snail (Achatina fulica) albumin glands has been studied by precipitin reactions in agar-gel double diffusion experiments with different lectins. Most lectins were found to be specific for terminal -D-galactose structures. Some findings suggest, that the structure DGal13DGal may be one of the receptor sites on the polysaccharide.

Summary Two new syntheses of Chloramphenicol are described starting from the diastereoisomers of -phenylserinmethyl ether and cinnamyl alcohol methyl ether respectively. The configurational correlation of the diastereoisomers of -phenylserin-methyl ether with -phenylserin and chloramphenicol is discussed. A new method for transforming erythro--phenylserinol into threo--phenylserinol is described. New examples of the Neighboring group effect were studied. The sterical course of the addition of methylhypobromite to the double bond is discussed.

Hydrolysis of amino acid β-naphthylamides by aminopeptidases in the parotid gland

Zusammenfassung Die Aktivität der Aminopeptidasen in Ohrspeicheldrüsen wurde gemessen. Glycyl-Prolin-naphthylamid, Alanin-naphthylamid, Leucin-naphthylamid, Methionin-naphthylamid, und Arginin-naphthylamid wurden von der Mikrosomenfraktion und der löslichen Fraktion schnell gespalten. Das Glycyl-Prolin-naphthylamid spaltende Enzym war in Ohrspeicheldrüsen in relativ grösserer Menge vorhanden. Die Aufspaltung von Glycyl-Prolin-naphthylamid in Glycyl-Prolin und-Naphthylamin wurde papierchromatographisch nachgewiesen.     

Affinity chromatography of human serum proteins using matrix bound lectin fromViscum album L.

Summary The D-galactose specific lectin fromViscum album L. reacts with serum proteins that contain the corresponding D-galactopyranosyl residues. By affinity chromatography of human serum on lectin-sepharose IgM, ₂-macroglobulin, haptoglobin and -lipoprotein were quantitatively retained. Only parts of IgA, IgG and transferrin were retarded. The other serum proteins are unbounded as albumin, ₁A– and ₁C.     

Deuterium isotope effects in the ninhydrin reaction of primary amines

Summary The rate of development of Ruhemann's purple in the ninhydrin reaction of two deuterated primary amines, -d₂-p-tyramine and -d₂--phenylethylamine, is significantly reduced It appears to be a primary isotope effect and indicates that the cleavage of the carbon-hydrogen bond at the -position is involved in the rate-determining step of the color reaction.Acknowledgements. Zusammenfassung Die Bildung von 11-Carboxy-3, 11, 17-trihydroxy-13-C-nor-5-androstan 11a,17-Lakton aus 3, 17-Diacetoxy-11-hydroxy-12-oxo-5-⁹(11)-androsten wird beschrieben. Der Mechanismus und die Stereochemie dieser Umwandlung (Retro-Aldolkondensation und Benzilsäureumlagerung) wird diskutiert.     

Effects of injury on the concentration ofα 1 andα 2 in the plasmas of male and female rats

Summary The effects of injury on the concentration of ₁-macroglobulin and ₂-macroglobulin in the plasmas of male and female rats has been investigated. At 5 days after injury to the male rats the ₁-macroglobulin concentration increased to 131% of its preinjury value. The ₂-macroglobulin concentration increased more rapidly to a maximum of 86 times its initial value. In the female rats ₂-macroglobulin increased only slightly and ₁-macroglobulin not at all.     

Carbohydrase and esterase activity in the gut of larvalCallosobruchus maculatus

Summary Carbohydrase activity has been demonstrated in homogenates of the alimentary tracts of late instar larvae ofC. maculatus:-D galactosidase, -D glucosidase and N-acetyl-D glucosaminidase activities were comparable and significantly greater than -D galactosidase,-D glucosidase and -D mannosidase. The effects of pH and substrate concentration are reported. The presence and changes in pattern of non-specific esterase activity in larval and adult gut homogenates is also described.     

Comparison of sterol composition and transformation in chicken and pigeon intestines
