A gas hydrate field with highly active venting of methane was recently found near Sado Island in the eastern Japan Sea. Piston cores were collected from active venting sites and nearby locations in the Umitaka Spur–Joetsu Knoll area during two cruises in 2004 (UT04) and 2005 (KY05-08). We report here halogen concentrations and 129I/I ratios in pore waters associated with gas hydrates from these expeditions. The strongly biophilic behavior of I and, to a lesser degree, of Br together with the presence of the long-lived iodine radioisotope (129I) allow evaluation of potential source materials for methane in gas hydrate systems. Depth profiles of all three halogens, particularly the very rapid downward increases of Br and I concentrations, strongly suggest input of deep fluids enriched in Br and I, but the profiles also display the effects of gas hydrate formation and dissociation. Although the 129I/I ratios are modified by 129I from seawater and sediments at shallow depth, likely ratios of the deep fluids are estimated to be between 400 × 10 15 and 600 × 10 15, equivalent to a Late Oligocene to Early Miocene age. Ages in the active methane venting sites typically are closer to the old end of this range than those in the reference sites. This age range suggests that the methane associated with venting and gas hydrate formation in this area is derived from organic materials accumulated during the initial opening of the Japan Sea. The Umitaka Spur–Joetsu Knoll gas hydrate field demonstrates the movement of deep fluids associated with the release of significant amounts of methane from the seafloor, processes which might be important components of mass transfer and carbon cycle in the shallow geosphere.  相似文献

Although oil cracking has been documented as one of the important sources of gas in many overmature marine sedimentary basins, the chemical and carbon isotopic signatures of gases of this origin are still open to question. In this study a Cambrian crude oil from the central Tarim basin, along with its main separated fractions (saturates, aromatics and asphaltenes), were pyrolyzed in sealed gold tubes to investigate how generated gases vary in chemical and carbon isotopic composition and how this variation would influence the genetic interpretation of oil cracking gas. The results indicate that the gases from cracking of aromatics and asphaltenes are much drier and more enriched in 13C than the gases from the cracking of saturates and crude oil at the same level of thermal maturity. In the experimental run of 20 °C/h, the dryness index of the gases (defined as the volume percentage of C1 in C1–5) from the cracking of saturates ranges from 26.2–90.6% with the methane carbon isotope change ranging from −54.8‰ to −35.5‰, whereas the dryness index is never lower than 60.6% for the gases from the cracking of aromatics with methane carbon isotope ranging from −39.9‰ to −32.2‰. Correspondingly, experimental data for the four samples plot in different areas in diagrams designed to distinguish oil cracking gas from kerogen cracking gas, such as ln(C2/C3) vs. δ13C2δ13C3 and δ13C1 vs. δ13C2δ13C3, indicating compositional variability of crude oil could assert an important influence in these diagrams. Therefore it is prudent to bring other geological constraints into consideration to avoid misinterpretation. The kinetic parameters for the bulk generation of C1–5 gas and the methane carbon isotope fractionation extrapolated to geological conditions of 2 °C/Ma and an initial temperature of 50 °C show that the temperatures of C1–5 gas generation from the aromatics and asphaltenes are lower than those from the saturates and crude oil due to their lower activation energies and frequency factors. Generation of C1–5 gases from the aromatics is modeled to be initiated about 122 °C whereas the initiation temperature for the saturates sample is 176 °C. Below 189 °C (EasyRo = 1.8%), the yields of C1–5 gases follow the order: aromatics > asphaltenes > crude oil > saturates. At similar thermal maturity levels, the methane carbon isotopic compositions are significantly different for the four samples, with an order of 13C enrichment: aromatics > asphaltenes > crude oil > saturates, however the difference in methane carbon isotopes becomes smaller with increasing temperature. This indicates that methane carbon isotopic values can be significantly different for gases cracked from oils that are compositionally diverse, especially in the early stage of methane generation.  相似文献

The stable carbon isotopic compositions of light hydrocarbon gases adsorbed in near-surface soil and sediments from the Saurashtra basin were characterized for their origin and maturity. Saurashtra is considered geologically prospective for oil and gas reserves; however, a major part of the basin is covered by the Deccan Traps, hindering the exploration of Mesozoic hydrocarbon targets. Surface geochemical prospecting, based on micro-seepage of hydrocarbons from subsurface accumulations, could be advantageous in such areas. In light of this, 150 soil samples were collected from the northwestern part of Saurashtra, around the Jamnagar area, where a thick sedimentary sequence of about 2–3 km exists under 1–1.5 km of Deccan basalt. The concentration of acid desorbed alkane gases from soil samples was found to vary (in ppb) as: methane (C1) = 3–518; ethane (C2) = 0–430; propane (C3) = 0–331; i-butane (iC4) = 0–297; n-butane (nC4) = 2–116; i-pentane (iC5) = 0–31 and n-pentane (nC5) = 0–23, respectively.Fifteen samples with high concentrations of alkane gases were measured for their δ13C1; δ13C2 and δ13C3 compositions using gas chromatography–combustion-isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC–C-IRMS). The values for methane varied from ? 27 to ? 45.4‰, ethane from ? 20.9 to ? 27.6‰, and propane from ? 20.4 to ? 29.1‰ versus the Vienna PeeDee Belemnite (VPDB). The carbon isotope ratio distribution pattern represents isotopic characteristics pertaining to hydrocarbon gases derived from thermogenic sources. Comparisons of carbon isotopic signatures and compositional variations with the standard carbon isotopic models suggest that hydrocarbon gases found in the shallow depths of the study area are not of bacterial origin but are formed thermally from deeply buried organic matter, likely to be mainly a terrestrial source rock with a partial contribution from a marine source. These gases may have migrated to the near-surface environment, where they represent an admixture of thermally generated hydrocarbon gases from mixed sources and maturity. The maturity scale (δ13C versus Log Ro %) applied to the surface sediment samples of the Jamnagar area indicated the source material to be capable of generating oil and gas. The detection of thermogenic alkane gases in near-surface sediments offers the possibility of hydrocarbons at depth in Saurashtra.  相似文献

Natural gas in the Xujiahe Formation of the Sichuan Basin is dominated by hydrocarbon (HC) gas, with 78–79% methane and 2–19% C2+ HC. Its dryness coefficient (C1/C1–5) is mostly < 0.95. The gas in fluid inclusions, which has low contents of CH4 and heavy hydrocarbons (C2+) and higher contents of non-hydrocarbons (e.g. CO2), is a typical wet gas produced by thermal degradation of kerogen. Gas produced from the Upper Triassic Xujiahe Formation (here denoted field gas) has light carbon isotope values for methane (δ13C1: −45‰ to −36‰) and heavier values for ethane (δ13C2: −30‰ to −25‰). The case is similar for gas in fluid inclusions, but δ13C1 = −36‰ to −45‰ and δ13C2 = −24.8‰ to −28.1‰, suggesting that the gas experienced weak isotopic fractionation due to migration and water washing. The field gas has δ13CCO2 values of −15.6‰ to −5.6‰, while the gas in fluid inclusions has δ13CCO2 values of −16.6‰ to −9‰, indicating its organic origin. Geochemical comparison shows that CO2 captured in fluid inclusions mainly originated from source rock organic matter, with little contribution from abiogenic CO2. Fluid inclusions originate in a relatively closed system without fluid exchange with the outside following the gas capture process, so that there is no isotopic fractionation. They thus present the original state of gas generated from the source rocks. These research results can provide a theoretical basis for gas generation, evolution, migration and accumulation in the basin.  相似文献

Exploration of unconventional natural gas reservoirs such as impermeable shale basins through the use of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing has changed the energy landscape in the USA providing a vast new energy source. The accelerated production of natural gas has triggered a debate concerning the safety and possible environmental impacts of these operations. This study investigates one of the critical aspects of the environmental effects; the possible degradation of water quality in shallow aquifers overlying producing shale formations. The geochemistry of domestic groundwater wells was investigated in aquifers overlying the Fayetteville Shale in north-central Arkansas, where approximately 4000 wells have been drilled since 2004 to extract unconventional natural gas. Monitoring was performed on 127 drinking water wells and the geochemistry of major ions, trace metals, CH4 gas content and its C isotopes (δ13CCH4), and select isotope tracers (δ11B, 87Sr/86Sr, δ2H, δ18O, δ13CDIC) compared to the composition of flowback-water samples directly from Fayetteville Shale gas wells. Dissolved CH4 was detected in 63% of the drinking-water wells (32 of 51 samples), but only six wells exceeded concentrations of 0.5 mg CH4/L. The δ13CCH4 of dissolved CH4 ranged from −42.3‰ to −74.7‰, with the most negative values characteristic of a biogenic source also associated with the highest observed CH4 concentrations, with a possible minor contribution of trace amounts of thermogenic CH4. The majority of these values are distinct from the reported thermogenic composition of the Fayetteville Shale gas (δ13CCH4 = −35.4‰ to −41.9‰). Based on major element chemistry, four shallow groundwater types were identified: (1) low (<100 mg/L) total dissolved solids (TDS), (2) TDS > 100 mg/L and Ca–HCO3 dominated, (3) TDS > 100 mg/L and Na–HCO3 dominated, and (4) slightly saline groundwater with TDS > 100 mg/L and Cl > 20 mg/L with elevated Br/Cl ratios (>0.001). The Sr (87Sr/86Sr = 0.7097–0.7166), C (δ13CDIC = −21.3‰ to −4.7‰), and B (δ11B = 3.9–32.9‰) isotopes clearly reflect water–rock interactions within the aquifer rocks, while the stable O and H isotopic composition mimics the local meteoric water composition. Overall, there was a geochemical gradient from low-mineralized recharge water to more evolved Ca–HCO3, and higher-mineralized Na–HCO3 composition generated by a combination of carbonate dissolution, silicate weathering, and reverse base-exchange reactions. The chemical and isotopic compositions of the bulk shallow groundwater samples were distinct from the Na–Cl type Fayetteville flowback/produced waters (TDS ∼10,000–20,000 mg/L). Yet, the high Br/Cl variations in a small subset of saline shallow groundwater suggest that they were derived from dilution of saline water similar to the brine in the Fayetteville Shale. Nonetheless, no spatial relationship was found between CH4 and salinity occurrences in shallow drinking water wells with proximity to shale-gas drilling sites. The integration of multiple geochemical and isotopic proxies shows no direct evidence of contamination in shallow drinking-water aquifers associated with natural gas extraction from the Fayetteville Shale.  相似文献

The Tertiary Thrace Basin located in NW Turkey comprises 9 km of clastic-sedimentary column ranging in age from Early Eocene to Recent in age. Fifteen natural gas and 10 associated condensate samples collected from the 11 different gas fields along the NW–SE extending zone of the northern portion of the basin were evaluated on the basis of their chemical and individual C isotopic compositions. For the purpose of the study, the genesis of CH4, thermogenic C2+ gases, and associated condensates were evaluated separately.Methane appears to have 3 origins: Group-1 CH4 is bacteriogenic (Calculated δ13CC1–C = −61.48‰; Silivri Field) and found in Oligocene reservoirs and mixed with the thermogenic Group-2 CH4. They probably formed in the Upper Oligocene coal and shales deposited in a marshy-swamp environment of fluvio-deltaic settings. Group-2 (δ13CC1–C = −35.80‰; Hamitabat Field) and Group-3 (δ13C1–C = −49.10‰; Değirmenköy Field) methanes are thermogenic and share the same origin with the Group-2 and Group-3 C2+ gases. The Group-2 C2+ gases include 63% of the gas fields. They are produced from both Eocene (overwhelmingly) and Oligocene reservoirs. These gases were almost certainly generated from isotopically heavy terrestrial kerogen (δ13C = −21‰) present in the Eocene deltaic Hamitabat shales. The Group-3 C2+ gases, produced from one field, were generated from isotopically light marine kerogen (δ13C = −29‰). Lower Oligoce ne Mezardere shales deposited in pro-deltaic settings are believed to be the source of these gases. The bulk and individual n-alkane isotopic relationships between the rock extracts, gases, condensates and oils from the basin differentiated two Groups of condensates, which can be genetically linked to the Group-2 and -3 thermogenic C2+ gases. However, it is crucial to note that condensates do not necessarily correlate to their associated gases.Maturity assessments on the Group-1 and -2 thermogenic gases based on their estimated initial kerogen isotope values (δ13C = −21‰; −29‰) and on the biomarkers present in the associated condensates reveal that all the hydrocarbons including gases, condensates and oils are the products of primary cracking at the early mature st age (Req = 0.55–0.81%). It is demonstrated that the open-system source conditions required for such an early-mature hydrocarbon expulsion exist and are supported by fault systems of the basin.  相似文献

The Mundaú–Manguaba estuarine–lagoon system (MMELS) constitutes one of the most representative ecosystems in the state of Alagoas, NE Brazil. Approximately 30% or 60,000 ha of the lower surrounding drainage basin of the MMELS are covered by sugar cane and a total of 250,000 inhabitants contribute untreated effluent to the system. Short sediment cores from MMELS were collected in 2007 at three sites: Manguaba Lagoon (C03), Mundaú Lagoon (C07) and Mundaú River (C08) in order to characterize the delivery and deposition of n-alkanes over the past 40 yr. The n-alkanes ranged from C15 to C35, with total aliphatic hydrocarbon (TAH) concentration in the range 27.8–139.5 μg g−1. An unresolved complex mixture (UCM) was observed in all sediments. The terrigenous/aquatic ratio (TAR), carbon preference index (CPI) and average chain length (ACL) showed that the terrigenous input dominated. The (δ13C) values of individual n-alkanes (C16–C33) varied between −22.6‰ and −34.2‰, suggesting a dominance of 12C-enriched n-alkanes that originated from C3 plants and lacustrine algae. The data reflect how anthropogenic input (via sewage, industrial pollution and agriculture) has influenced the organic content of the system through time.  相似文献

Calcite veins with fluid and solid bitumen inclusions have been discovered in the south-western shoulder of the Dead Sea rift within the Masada-Zohar block, where hydrocarbons exist in small commercial gas fields and non-commercial fields of heavy and light oils. The gas–liquid inclusions in calcite are dominated either by methane or CO2, and aqueous inclusions sometimes bear minor dissolved hydrocarbons. The enclosed flake-like solid bitumen matter is a residue of degraded oil, which may be interpreted as “dead carbon”. About 2/3 of this matter is soot-like amorphous carbon and 1/3 consists of n-C8C18 carboxylic acids and traces of n-alkanes, light dicarboxylic acids, and higher molecular weight (>C20) branched and/or cyclic carboxylic acids. Both bitumen and the host calcites show genetic relationship with mature Maastrichtian chalky source rocks (MCSRs) evident in isotopic compositions (δ13C, δ34S, and δ18O) and in REE + Y patterns. The bitumen precursor may have been heavy sulfur-rich oil which was generated during the burial compaction of the MCSR strata within the subsided blocks of the Dead Sea graben. The δ18O and δ13C values and REE + Y signatures in calcites indicate mixing of deep buried fluids equilibrated with post-mature sediments and meteoric waters. The temperatures of fluid generation according to Mg–Li-geothermometer data range from 55 °С to 90 °С corresponding to the 2.5–4.0 km depths, and largely overlap with the oil window range (60–90 °С) in the Dead Sea rift (Hunt, 1996; Gvirtzman and Stanislavsky, 2000; Buryakovsky et al., 2005). The bitumen-rich vein calcites originated in the course of Late Cenozoic rifting and related deformation, when tectonic stress triggers damaged small hydrocarbon reservoirs in the area, produced pathways, and caused hydrocarbon-bearing fluids to rise to the subsurface; the fluids filled open fractures and crystallized to calcite with entrapped bitumen. The reported results are in good agreement with the existing views of maturation, migration, and accumulation of hydrocarbons, as well as basin fluid transport processes in the Dead Sea area.  相似文献

Variations in molybdenum isotopic composition, spanning the range of ∼ 2.3‰ in the terms of 97Mo/95Mo ratio, have been measured in sediment cores from three lakes in northern Sweden and north-western Russia. These variations have been produced by both isotopically variable input of Mo into the lakes due to Mo isotopic heterogeneity of bedrock in the drainage basins and fractionation in the lake systems due to temporal variations in limnological conditions. Mo isotope abundances of bedrock in the lake drainage basins have been documented by analysis of Mo isotope ratios of a suite of molybdenite occurrences collected in the studied area and of detrital fractions of the lake sediment cores. The median δ97Mo value of the investigated molybdenites is 0.26‰ with standard deviation of 0.43‰ (n = 19), whereas the median δ97Mo value of detrital sediment fractions from two lakes is − 0.40‰ with standard deviation of 0.36‰ (n = 15).The isotopic composition of Mo in the sediment cores has been found to be dependent on redox conditions of the water columns and the dominant type of scavenging phases. Hydrous Fe oxides have been shown to be an efficient scavenger of Mo from porewater under oxic conditions. Oxidative precipitation of Fe(II) in the sediments resulted in co-precipitation of Mo and significant authigenic enrichment at the redox boundary. In spite of a pronounced increase in Mo concentration associated with Fe oxides at the redox boundary the isotopic composition of Mo in this zone varies insignificantly, suggesting little or no isotope fractionation during scavenging of Mo by hydrous Fe oxides. In a lake with anoxic bottom water a chironomid-inferred reconstruction of O2 conditions in the bottom water through the Holocene indicates that increased O2 concentrations are generally associated with low δ97Mo/95Mo values of the sediments, whereas lowered O2 contents of the bottom water are accompanied by relatively high δ97Mo/95Mo values, thus confirming the potential of Mo isotope data to be a proxy for redox conditions of overlying waters. However, it is pointed out that other processes including input of isotopically heterogeneous Mo and Mn cycling in the redox-stratified water column can be a primary cause of variations in Mo isotopic compositions of lake sediments.  相似文献

Ore-forming porphyries and barren granitoids from porphyry Cu deposits differ in many ways, particularly with respect to their adakitic affinity and calc-alkaline characteristics. In this study, zircon U–Pb and molybdenite Re–Os dating, whole rock geochemistry, whole rock Sr–Nd–Pb and zircon O–Hf isotopic analyses were carried out on the ore-forming granitoids from the Kounrad, Borly and Sayak deposits, and also on pre-ore and post-ore granitoids in adjacent regions of Central Kazakhstan. Geochronology results indicate that pre-ore magmatism occurred in the Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous (361.3–339.4 Ma), followed by large scale Cu mineralization (325.0–327.3 Ma at Kounrad, 311.4–315.2 Ma at Borly and 309.5–311.4 Ma at Sayak), and finally, emplacement of the Late Carboniferous post-ore barren granitoids (305.0 Ma). The geochemistry of these rocks is consistent with calc-alkaline arc magmatism characterized by strong depletions in Nb, Ta and Ti and enrichments in light rare earth elements and large ion lithophile elements, suggesting a supra-subduction zone setting. However, the ore-forming rocks at Kounrad and Sayak show adakitic characteristics with high Sr (517.5–785.3 ppm), Sr/Y (50.60–79.26), (La/Yb)N (9.37–19.62) but low Y (6.94–11.54 ppm) and Yb (0.57–1.07 ppm), whereas ore-forming rocks at Borly and barren rocks from northwest of Borly and Sayak have normal arc magma geochemical features. The Sr–Nd–Hf–O isotopic compositions show three different signatures: (1) Sayak granitoids have very young juvenile lower crust-derived compositions ((87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.70384 to 0.70451, ɛNd (t) = + 4.9 to + 6.0; TDM2 (Nd) = 580 to 670 Ma, ɛHf (t) = + 11.3 to + 15.5; TDMC (Hf) = 330 to 600 Ma, δ18O = 6.0 to 8.1‰), and were probably generated from depleted mantle-derived magma with 5–15% sediment melt addition in the magma source; (2) the Kt-1 granite from northwest of Sayak shows extremely enriched Sr–Nd isotopic compositions ((87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.71050, ɛNd (t) =  7.8, TDM2 (Nd) = 1700 Ma), likely derived from partial melting of ancient continental crust; (3) other granitoids have transitional Sr–Nd compositions between the Sayak and Kt-1 samples, indicating a juvenile lower crust source with the addition of 10–30% of ancient crustal material. The pre-ore magmatism was probably related to partial melting of juvenile lower crust due to northward subduction of the Junggar–Balkhash Ocean, whereas the ore-forming adakitic rocks at Aktogai, Kounrad and Sayak formed by partial melting of thickened lower crust which subsequently delaminated. The ore-forming rocks at Borly, and the later post-ore barren granites, formed by partial melting of juvenile lower crust with normal thickness. This tectonic setting supports the existence of an Andean-type magmatic arc in the Devonian to the Late Carboniferous, resulting from the subduction of the Junggar–Balkhash oceanic plate. The link between whole rock geochemistry and scale of mineralization suggests a higher metallogenic potential for adakitic rocks than for normal arc magmatism.  相似文献

Natural gas reservoirs in organic-rich shales in the Appalachian and Michigan basins in the United States are currently being produced via hydraulic fracturing. Stratigraphically-equivalent shales occur in the Canadian portion of the basins in southwestern Ontario with anecdotal evidence of gas shows, yet there has been no commercial shale gas production to date. To provide baseline data in the case of future environmental issues related to hydraulic fracturing and shale gas production, such as leakage of natural gas, saline water, and/or hydraulic fracturing fluids, and to evaluate hydrogeochemical controls on natural gas accumulations in shallow groundwater in general, this study investigates the origin and distribution of natural gas and brine in shallow aquifers across southwestern Ontario. An extensive geochemical database of major ion and trace metal chemistry and methane concentrations of 1010 groundwater samples from shallow, domestic wells in bedrock and overburden aquifers throughout southwestern Ontario was utilized. In addition, select wells (n = 36) were resampled for detailed dissolved gas composition, δ13C of CH4, C2, C3, and CO2, and δD of CH4. Dissolved gases in groundwater from bedrock and overburden wells were composed primarily of CH4 (29.7–98.6 mol% of total gas volume), N2 (0.8–66.2 mol%), Ar + O2 (0.2–3.4 mol%), and CO2 (0–1.2 mol%). Ethane was detected, but only in low concentrations (<0.041 mol%), and no other higher chain hydrocarbons were present, except for one well in overburden overlying the Dundee Formation, which contained 0.81 mol% ethane and 0.21 mol% propane. The highest methane concentrations (30 to >100 in situ % saturation) were found in bedrock wells completed in the Upper Devonian Kettle Point Formation, Middle Devonian Hamilton Group and Dundee Formation, and in surficial aquifers overlying these organic-rich shale-bearing formations, indicating that bedrock geology is the primary control on methane occurrences. A few (n = 40) samples showed Na–Cl–Br evidence of brine mixing with dilute groundwater, however only one of these samples contained high (>60 in situ % saturation) CH4. The relatively low δ13C values of CH4 (−89.9‰ to −57.3‰), covariance of δD values of CH4 and H2O, positive correlation between δ13C values of CH4 and CO2, and lack of higher chain hydrocarbons (C3+) in all but one dissolved gas sample indicates that the methane in groundwater throughout the study area is primarily microbial in origin. The presence or absence of alternative electron acceptors (e.g. dissolved oxygen, Fe, NO3, SO4), in addition to organic substrates, controls the occurrence of microbial CH4 in shallow aquifers. Microbial methane has likely been accumulating in the study area, since at least the Late Pleistocene to the present, as indicated by the co-variance and range of δD values of CH4 (−314‰ to −263‰) and associated groundwater (−19‰ to −6‰ δD-H2O).  相似文献

Oxygen and carbon isotope ratios of soil carbonate and carbon isotope ratios of soil organic matter (SOM) separated from three cores, Kalpi, IITK and Firozpur, of the Ganga Plain, India are used to reconstruct past rainfall variations and their effect on ambient vegetation. The δ18O values of soil carbonate (δ18OSC) analyzed from the cores range from ? 8.2 to ? 4.1‰. Using these variations in δ18OSC values we are able, for the first time, to show periodic change in rainfall amount between 100 and 18 ka with three peaks of higher monsoon at about 100, 40 and 25 ka. The estimation of rainfall variations using δ18O value of rainwater-amount effect suggests maximum decrease in rainfall intensity (~ 20%) during the last glacial maximum. The δ13C values of soil carbonate (δ13CSC) and SOM (δ13CSOM) range from ? 6.3 to + 1.6‰ and ? 28.9 to ? 19.4‰, respectively, implying varying proportions of C3 and C4 vegetations over the Ganga Plain during the last 100 ka. The comparison between monsoonal rainfall and atmospheric CO2 with vegetation for the time period 84 to 18 ka indicate that relative abundances of C3 and C4 vegetations were mainly driven by variations in monsoonal rainfall.  相似文献

Previously studied thermosequences of wood (chestnut) and grass (rice straw) biochar were subjected to hydrogen pyrolysis (hypy) to evaluate the efficacy of the technique for determining pyrogenic carbon (CP) abundance. As expected, biochar from both wood and grass produced at higher temperature had higher CP amount. However, the trend was not linear, but more sigmoidal. CP/CT ratio values (CT = total organic carbon) for the wood thermosequence were ⩽0.03 at biochar production temperature (TCHAR)  300 °C. They increased dramatically until 600 °C and remained relatively constant and near unity at higher biochar production temperature. Grass biochar was similar in profile, but CP/CT values rose dramatically after 400 °C. The findings are consistent with the hypothesis that hypy residues contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with a degree of condensation above at least 7–14 fused rings, with labile organic matter and pyrogenic PAHs below this degree of condensation removed by hypy. Both wood and grass thermosequences displayed δ13CP values that decreased with increased TCHAR, indicating that recalcitrant carbon compounds (pyrogenic aromatic PAHs with a relatively high degree of condensation) were first formed from structural components with relatively high δ13C values (e.g. cellulose). Relatively constant δ13C values at TCHAR  500 °C suggested the dominant pyrolysis reaction was condensation of PAHs with no additional fractionation. Comparison of hypy with benzene polycarboxylic acid (BPCA), ‘ring current’ NMR and pyrolysis gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS) results from the same suite of samples indicated a consistent overview of the structure of CP, but provided unique and complimentary information.

Although the methane in marine methane hydrates is mainly of microbial origin, information about the distribution of methanogens in subseafloor sediments is limited. To address this issue, we analyzed sediment core samples from two sites in the Nankai Trough, off the Pacific coast of central Japan, including those bearing methane hydrates from depths > 100 m below the seafloor (mbsf), for isopranyl ether-linked polar lipids (i.e. with polar head groups of phosphate, sugar, or both) as biomarkers of archaea, including methanogens. In most samples, including the deepest (381 mbsf), archaeol, and sn-2- and sn-3-hydroxyarchaeols were detected as their hydrolyzed derivatives. Concentrations of these three archaeal lipids correlated strongly with each other, suggesting a common biological source. The δ13C values of phytane derived from the phytanyl groups in the archaeal lipids were distinctly higher than those of methane, indicating that methanogens rather than anaerobic methanotrophic archaea were the major biological source. Depth profiles of polar sn-2-hydroxyarchaeol concentration were consistent with those of the potential methane production activity previously estimated from incubation of core sediments from the same sites. This observation, together with results of previous studies showing the presence of sn-2-hydroxyarchaeol mainly in shallow young sediments, strongly suggests that this polar lipid is a valid biomarker for in situ methanogens in sediments. There was a strong correlation between the concentration of polar sn-2-hydroxyarchaeol and that of total organic carbon, suggesting that bulk organic matter concentration is a primary control on the distribution of methanogens in sediments.  相似文献

The Xiaguan Ag–Pb–Zn orefield (Neixiang County, Henan Province), hosting the Yindonggou, Zhouzhuang, Yinhulugou and Laozhuang fault-controlled lode deposits, is situated in the Erlangping Terrane, eastern Qinling Orogen. The quartz-sulfide vein mineralization is dominated by main alteration styles of silicic-, sericite-, carbonate-, chlorite- and sulfide alteration. Major Ag-bearing minerals are freibergite, argentite and native Ag. The deposits were formed by a CO2-rich, mesothermal (ca. 250–320 °C), low-density and low salinity (< 11 wt.% NaCl equiv.), Na+–Cl-type fluid system. Trapping pressures of the carbonic-type fluid inclusions (FIs) decreased from ca. 280–320 MPa in the early mineralization stage to ca. 90–92 MPa in the late mineralization stage, indicating that the ore-forming depths had become progressively shallower. This further suggests that the metallogenesis may have occurred in a tectonic transition from compression to extension. Geological- and ore fluid characteristics suggest that the Xiaguan Ag–Pb–Zn orefield belongs to orogenic-type systems. The δ18OH2O values change from the Early (E)-stage (7.8–10.8 ‰), through Middle (M)-stage (6.0–9.4 ‰) to Late (L)-stage (− 1.5–3.3 ‰), with δD values changing from E-stage − 95 to − 46 ‰, through M-stage − 82 to − 70 ‰ to L-stage − 95 to − 82 ‰. δ13CCO2 values of the ore fluids in the E- and M-stage quartz vary between 0.1 ‰ and 0.9 ‰ (average: 0.3 ‰); δ13CCO2 values of L-stage FIs are − 0.2–0.1 ‰ in quartz and − 6.8 ‰ to − 3.5 ‰ in calcite. The H–O–C isotopic data indicate that the initial ore fluids were sourced from the underthrusted Qinling Group marine carbonates, and were then interacted with the ore-hosting Erlangping Group metasedimentary rocks. Inflow of circulated meteoric water may have dominated the L-stage fluid evolution.Sulfur (δ34S = 1.9–8.1 ‰) and lead isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb = 18.202–18.446, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.567–15.773 and 208Pb/204Pb = 38.491–39.089) of sulfides suggest that the ore-forming materials were mainly sourced from the ore-hosting metasedimentary strata. The stepped heating sericite 40Ar/39Ar detection suggests that the mineralization occurred in the Middle Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (ca. 187  124 Ma). Considering the regional tectonic evolution of the Erlangping Terrane, we propose that the Xiaguan Ag–Pb–Zn orefield was formed in a continent–continent collisional tectonic regime, in accordance with the tectonic model for continental collision, metallogeny and fluid flow (CMF).  相似文献

Hydrogen isotopic composition of n-alkanes was measured in sediments from an excavated profile of the Early Cretaceous Yixian Formation in Liaoning Province, NE China, aiming to assess the significance of the δD value of n-alkanes in ancient lacustrine sediments as the indicator for determining the source inputs of organic matters and paleoclimatic conditions. The δD values of n-alkanes are in the range of − 250‰ to − 85‰ and display an obvious three-stage variation pattern through the profile, which is consistent with the distribution of the dominated n-alkanes and the profile of their δ13C values. The δD and δ13C values of n-alkanes suggest that short-chain n-alkanes are primarily derived from photosynthetic bacteria and algae; n-C29 and n-C31 are mainly originated from terrestrial higher plants; n-C28 and n-C30 may be derived from the same precursor but via the different biological mechanism of hydrogen isotopic fractionation; while the source inputs of medium-chain n-alkanes are more complicated, with n-C23 being derived from some specific algae or biosynthesized by various aquatic organisms. The paleoclimatic conditions are reconstructed via two approaches. The reconstructed hydrogen isotopic values of lake water and meteoric water (expressed as δDLW and δDMW, respectively) were at the intervals of − 51.8‰ to 17.0‰ and − 118.1‰ to − 43.5‰, respectively, indicating a general climate transition from semi-arid to arid. The calculated ΔδDLW-MW values vary from 37.0‰ to 89.1‰ and display a similar but a significant large-scale variation trend with the ΔδDC23  long (− 28.8‰ to 85.0‰; long represents long-chain n-alkanes) and ΔδDmid-long (− 15.4‰ to 43.4‰; mid represents medium-chain n-alkanes) values. The discrepancy may be attributed to the source input overlap for n-alkanes and the uncertainties of εwater/lipid values. The coupling of ΔδDC23  long, ΔδDmid-long and ΔδDLW-MW values with the paleoclimatic evidence indicates that the δD values of n-alkanes could be more sensitive to the change of paleoclimatic conditions.  相似文献

The Huijiabao gold district is one of the major producers for Carlin-type gold deposits in southwestern Guizhou Province, China, including Taipingdong, Zimudang, Shuiyindong, Bojitian and other gold deposits/occurrences. Petrographic observation, microthermometric study and Laser Raman spectroscopy were carried out on the fluid inclusions within representative minerals in various mineralization stages from these four gold deposits. Five types of fluid inclusions have been recognized in hydrothermal minerals of different ore-forming stages: aqueous inclusions, CO2 inclusions, CO2–H2O inclusions, hydrocarbon inclusions, and hydrocarbon–H2O inclusions. The ore-forming fluids are characterized by a H2O + CO2 + CH4 ± N2 system with medium to low temperature and low salinity. From early mineralization stage to later ones, the compositions of the ore-forming fluids experienced an evolution of H2O + NaCl  H2O + NaCl + CO2 + CH4 ± N2  H2O + NaCl ± CH4 ± CO2 with a slight decrease in homogenization temperature and salinity. The δ18O values of the main-stage quartz vary from 15.2‰ to 24.1‰, while the δDH2O and calculated δ18OH2O values of the ore-forming fluids range from −56.9 to −116.3‰ and from 2.12‰ to 12.7‰, respectively. The δ13CPDB and δ18OSMOW values of hydrothermal calcite change in the range of −9.1‰ to −0.5‰ and 11.1–23.2‰, respectively. Stable isotopic characteristics indicate that the ore-forming fluid was mainly composed of ore- and hydrocarbon-bearing basinal fluid. The dynamic fractionation of the sulfur in the diagenetic pyrite is controlled by bacterial reduction of marine sulfates. The hydrothermal sulfides and the diagenetic pyrite from the host rocks are very similar in their sulfur isotopic composition, suggesting that the sulfur in the ore-forming fluids was mainly derived from dissolution of diagenetic pyrite. The study of fluid inclusions indicates that immiscibility of H2O–NaCl–CO2 fluids took place during the main mineralization stage and caused the precipitation and enrichment of gold.  相似文献

Major, trace element and isotopic (Sr, Nd, Pb) data and unspiked K–Ar ages are presented for Quaternary (0.90–0.95 Ma old) basalts from the Hayyabley volcano, Djibouti. These basalts are LREE-depleted (Lan/Smn = 0.76–0.83), with 87Sr/86Sr ratios ranging from 0.70369 to 0.70376, and rather homogeneous 143Nd/144Nd (εNd = + 5.9–+ 7.3) and Pb isotopic compositions (206Pb/204Pb = 18.47–18.55, 207Pb/204Pb = 15.52–15.57, 208Pb/204Pb = 38.62–38.77). They are very different from the underlying enriched Tadjoura Gulf basalts, and from the N-MORB erupted from the nascent oceanic ridges of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Their compositions closely resemble those of (1) depleted Quaternary Manda Hararo basalts from the Afar depression in Ethiopia and (2) one Oligocene basalt from the Ethiopian Plateau trap series. Their trace element and Sr, Nd, Pb isotope systematics suggest the involvement of a discrete but minor LREE-depleted component, which is probably an intrinsic part of the Afar plume.  相似文献

The Neoproterozoic (593–532 Ma) Dahongliutan banded iron formation (BIF), located in the Tianshuihai terrane (Western Kunlun orogenic belt), is hosted in the Tianshuihai Group, a dominantly submarine siliciclastic and carbonate sedimentary succession that generally has been metamorphosed to greenschist facies. Iron oxide (hematite), carbonate (siderite, ankerite, dolomite and calcite) and silicate (muscovite) facies are all present within the iron-rich layers. There are three distinctive sedimentary facies BIFs, the oxide, silicate–carbonate–oxide and carbonate (being subdivided into ankerite and siderite facies BIFs) in the Dahongliutan BIF. They demonstrate lateral and vertical zonation from south to north and from bottom to top: the carbonate facies BIF through a majority of the oxide facies BIF into the silicate–carbonate–oxide facies BIF and a small proportion of the oxide facies BIF.The positive correlations between Al2O3 and TiO2, Sc, V, Cr, Rb, Cs, Th and ∑REE (total rare earth element) for various facies of BIFs indicate these chemical sediments incorporate terrigenous detrital components. Low contents of Al2O3 (<3 wt%), TiO2 (<0.15 wt%), ∑REE (5.06–39.6 ppm) and incompatible HFSEs (high field strength elements, e.g., Zr, Hf, Th and Sc) (<10 ppm), and high Fe/Ti ratios (254–4115) for a majority of the oxide and carbonate facies BIFs suggest a small clastic input (<20% clastic materials) admixtured with their original chemical precipitates. The higher abundances of Al2O3 (>3 wt%), TiO2, Zr, Th, Cs, Sc, Cr and ∑REE (31.2–62.9 ppm), and low Fe/Ti ratios (95.2–236) of the silicate–carbonate–oxide facies BIF are consistent with incorporation of higher amounts of clastic components (20%–40% clastic materials). The HREE (heavy rare earth element) enrichment pattern in PAAS-normalized REE diagrams exhibited by a majority of the oxide and carbonate facies BIFs shows a modern seawater REE signature overprinted by high-T (temperature) hydrothermal fluids marked by strong positive Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu1PAAS = 2.37–5.23). The low Eu/Sm ratios, small positive Eu anomaly (Eu/Eu1PAAS = 1.10–1.58) and slightly MREE (middle rare earth element) enrichment relative to HREE in the silicate–carbonate–oxide facies BIF and some oxide and carbonate facies BIFs indicate higher contributions from low-T hydrothermal sources. The absence of negative Ce anomalies and the high Fe3+/(Fe3+/Fe2+) ratios (0.98–1.00) for the oxide and silicate–carbonate–oxide BIFs do not support ocean anoxia. The δ13CV-PDB (−4.0‰ to −6.6‰) and δ18OV-PDB (−14.0‰ to −11.5‰) values for siderite and ankerite in the carbonate facies BIF are, on average, ∼6‰ and ∼5‰ lower than those (δ13CV-PDB = −0.8‰ to + 3.1‰ and δ18OV-PDB = −8.2‰ to −6.3‰) of Ca–Mg carbonates from the silicate–carbonate–oxide facies BIF. This feature, coupled with the negative correlations between FeO, Eu/Eu1PAAS and δ13CV-PDB, imply that a water column stratified with regard to the isotopic omposition of total dissolved CO2, with the deeper water, from which the carbonate facies BIF formed, depleted in δ13C that may have been derive from hydrothermal activity.Integration of petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic data indicates that the silicate–carbonate–oxide facies BIF and part of the oxide facies BIF precipitated in a near-shore, oxic and shallow water environment, whereas a majority of the oxide and carbonate facies BIFs deposited in anoxic but Fe2+-rich deeper waters, closer to submarine hydrothermal vents. High-T hydrothermal solutions, with infusions of some low-T hydrothermal fluids, brought Fe and Si onto a shallow marine, variably mixed with detrital components from seawaters and fresh waters carrying continental landmass and finally led to the alternating deposition of the Dahongliutan BIF during regression–transgression cycles. The Dahongliutan BIF is more akin to Superior-type rather than Algoma-type and Rapitan-type BIF, and constitutes an additional line of evidence for the widespread return of BIFs in the Cryogenian and Ediacaran reflecting the recurrence of anoxic ferruginous deep sea and anoxia/reoxygenation cycles in the Neoproterozoic. In combination with previous studies on other Fe deposits in the Tianshuihai terrane, we propose that a Fe2+-rich anoxic basin or deep sea probably existed from the Neoproterozoic to the Early Cambrian in this area.  相似文献
