Although many detailed chemical reaction mechanisms, skeletal mechanisms and reduced mechanisms are available in the literature to modeling the natural gas, they are computational expensive, required high power computing especially for three dimensional complex geometries with intense meshes. For example, though the DRM19 reduced mechanism does not include NO and NO2 species, it includes 19 species and 84 reactions. On the other hand, Eddy Dissipation combustion model in which the overall rate of reaction is mainly controlled by turbulent mixing can be utilized as a practical approach for fast burning and fast reaction fuels such as natural gas. Unlike fossil fuels, hydrogen is a renewable energy and quite clean in terms of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide emissions. However, numerical and experimental studies on hydrogen combustion in burners are very restricted. In this study, the combustion of natural gas in an industrial low swirl burner–boiler system has been experimentally investigated. The results obtained from the experimental setup have been utilized as boundary conditions for CFD simulations. With the use of Eddy Dissipation method, methane-air-2-step reaction mechanism is used for modeling of natural gas as methane gas and the reaction mechanism has been modified for natural gas considering the natural gas properties to reveal the similarities and differences of both fuels in modeling. In addition, the combustion performances of natural gas with the use of full and periodic models, which are geometric models of the burner–boiler pair, are compared. Moreover, in order to reveal the effect of the hydrogen-enriched natural gas and pure hydrogen on the performance of low swirl burner–boiler considering the combustion emissions, four various gas contents (thermal load ratio: 75%NG + 25%H2, 50%NG + 50%H2, 25%NG + 75%H2, 100%H2) at the same thermal load have been investigated. The turbulent flames of the industrial low swirl burner have been studied numerically using ANSYS Fluent 16.0 for the solution of governing equations. The results obtained in this study show that with the utilizing Eddy Dissipation method, natural gas can be modeled as methane gas with well-known methane-air-2step reaction mechanism or as natural gas with modified methane-air-2step reaction mechanism with approximate results. Additionally, the use of periodic boundary condition, which enables studying with 1/4 of geometric model, gives satisfactory results with less number of meshes when compared to the full model. Furthermore, in the case of using hydrogen-enriched natural gas or pure hydrogen instead of natural gas as the fuel, the combustion emissions of the burner–boiler such as CO and CO2 are remarkably decreasing compared to the natural gas. However, the NOx emissions are significantly increasing especially due to thermal NO.  相似文献

Ammonia, made up of 17.8% hydrogen, has attracted a lot of attention in combustion community due to its zero carbon emission as a fuel in gas turbines. However, ammonia combustion still faces some challenges including the weak combustion and sharp NOx emissions which discourage its application. It was demonstrated that the combustion intensity of ammonia/air flame can be enhanced through adding active fuels like methane and hydrogen, while the NOx emission issue will emerge in the meantime. This study investigates regulation effect of methane and hydrogen on the emission characteristics of ammonia/air flame in a gas turbine combustor. The instantaneous OH profile and global emissions at the combustion chamber outlet are measured with Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) technique and the Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), respectively. The flames are also simulated by large eddy simulation to further reveal physical and chemical processes of the emissions formation. Results show that for NH3/air flames, the emissions behavior of the gas turbine combustor is similar to the calculated one-dimensional flames. Moreover, the NOx emissions and the unburned NH3 can be simultaneously controlled to a proper value at the equivalence ratio (φ) of approximate 1.1. The variation of NO and NO2 with φ for NH3/H2/air flames and NH3/CH4/air flames at blending ratio (Zf) of 0.1 are similar to the NH3/air flames, with the peak moving towards rich condition. This indicates that the NH3/air flame can be regulated through adding a small amount of active fuels without increasing the NOx emission level. However, when Zf = 0.3, we observe a clear large NOx emission and CO for NH3/CH4/air flames, indicating H2 is a better choice on the emission control. The LES results show that NO and OH radicals exhibit a general positive correlation. And the temperature plays a secondary role in promoting NOx formation comparing with CH4/air flame.  相似文献

In this study, temperature distributions from turbulent chemical reactive flow inside a model combustor have been presented for various mixtured hydrogen–methane fuels. The gas emissions were also obtained at the combustor exit. A platinum–platinum 13% rhodium thermocouple (R type) was used for measurement of axial and radial temperatures. The axial and radial temperature measurements were taken from six various distances and four distances, respectively. Experimental measurements were made at excess air ratios of 1.2 and 1.7, two various thermal powers including 40 and 60 kW and two various hydrogen–methane blending fuels (volumetrically 30% H2–70% CH4 and 70% H2–30% CH4). The results show that the temperature level increases, CO and CO2 emissions decrease when the hydrogen content is increased in mixtured fuel, hydrogen–methane mixtured fuels are successfully used without any important modification in natural gas burner.  相似文献

With the inexorable depletion of fossil fuel and the increasing need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, blending renewable fuels like biogas or renewable hydrogen into natural gas is of great interest. Due to various potential sources and low-carbon or even carbon-free properties, biogas and hydrogen are competitive energy carriers and promising gaseous fuels to replace pipeline natural gas in the future. From the perspective of end users and combustion device manufacturers, one of the major concerns is the influence of the renewable content on the combustion device performance. In addition, the upper limit of renewable gas content percentage in pipeline also interests policy makers and gas utility companies. Therefore, the present study is conducted to investigate the influence of renewable gas content on the operating performance of a residential room furnace. Evaluated combustion performance characteristics include ignition performance, blow-off/flashback limits, burner temperature and emissions (NO, NO2, N2O, CO, UHC, NH3). The results show that 5% carbon dioxide and 15% (by volume) hydrogen can be added to natural gas separately without significant impacts. Above this amount, the risk of blow-off and flashback is the limiting factor. Generally speaking, carbon dioxide addition helps decrease NOX emission but increases CO emission. However, hydrogen addition up to the amounts studied here in has minimal impact on NOX and CO emissions.

This paper presents an experimental study of mild flameless combustion regime applied to methane/hydrogen mixtures in a laboratory-scale pilot furnace with or without air preheating. Results show that mild flameless combustion regime is achieved from pure methane to pure hydrogen whatever the CH4/H2 proportion. The main reaction zone remains lifted from the burner exit, in the mixing layer of fuel and air jets ensuring a large dilution correlated to low NOx emissions whereas CO2 concentrations obviously decrease with hydrogen proportion. A decrease of NOx emissions is measured for larger quantity of hydrogen due mainly to the decrease of prompt NO formation. Without air preheating, a slight increase of the excess air ratio is required to control CO emissions. For pure hydrogen fuel without air preheating, mild flameless combustion regime leads to operating conditions close to a "zero emission furnace", with ultra-low NOx emissions and without any carbonated species emissions.  相似文献

This work presents an experimental study describing a six-cylinder spark ignition engine running with a lean equivalence ratio, high compression ratio, ignition delay and used in a cogeneration system (heat and electricity production). Three types of fuels; natural gas, pure methane and methane/hydrogen blend (85% CH4 and 15% H2 by volume), were used for comparison purposes. Each fuel has been investigated at 1500 rpm and for various engine loads fixed by electrical power output conditions. CO, CO2, HC, and NOx emissions values, and exhaust gas temperature were measured. The effect of fuel composition on engine characteristics has been studied. The results show, that the hydrogen addition increased HC emissions (around 18%), as well as performance, whilst it reduced NOx (around 31%), exhaust gas temperature, CO and CO2.  相似文献

Producer gas, which derived from a biomass gasification process, is considered as one of the alternative fuels, which is suitable for the heating process and power generation. Due to low heating density and impurities, combustion in an external combustion chamber constitutes an obvious option for the utilization of producer gas via the combustion process. This paper reviews the technical challenges and the development of the producer gas combustor. Various combustion techniques are reviewed. A stable flame combustion with low emissions (both CO and NOx) constitutes a main requirement of the producer gas combustion. Flame stabilization techniques such as swirl-vane coupled with bluff-body, swirl flow configuration, and staging combustion were successfully employed to enhance the stability and performance of the producer gas combustion. As shown in the results of the studies, the combustion process can operate in a wide range of equivalence ratios with the exhaust gas temperature >600 °C. This temperature is sufficiently hot for the power generation and heating applications. Overall, NOx and CO emissions were below 700 ppm and 1.3%, respectively. In the flameless combustion mode, ultra-low emission for both CO and NOx were recorded. However, higher emission can be found when operated at a higher thermal load combustor. Homogeneity of the thermal field and low polluting emissions make flameless combustion a promising lean and clean combustion technology. Integration of the benefits of flameless combustion and producer gas fuel is an outstanding contribution in reducing emissions and enhancing the efficiency of the combustion systems.  相似文献

To understand the combustion performance of using hydrogen/methane blended fuels for a micro gas turbine that was originally designed as a natural gas fueled engine, the combustion characteristics of a can combustor has been modeled and the effects of hydrogen addition were investigated. The simulations were performed with three-dimensional compressible k-ε turbulent flow model and presumed probability density function for chemical reaction. The combustion and emission characteristics with a variable volumetric fraction of hydrogen from 0% to 90% were studied. As hydrogen is substituted for methane at a fixed fuel injection velocity, the flame temperatures become higher, but lower fuel flow rate and heat input at higher hydrogen substitution percentages cause a power shortage. To apply the blended fuels at a constant fuel flow rate, the flame temperatures are increased with increasing hydrogen percentages. This will benefit the performance of gas turbine, but the cooling and the NOx emissions are the primary concerns. While fixing a certain heat input to the engine with blended fuels, wider but shorter flames at higher hydrogen percentages are found, but the substantial increase of CO emission indicates a decrease in combustion efficiency. Further modifications including fuel injection and cooling strategies are needed for the micro gas turbine engine with hydrogen/methane blended fuel as an alternative.  相似文献

Shortage of non-renewable energies, increase in fossil fuel prices and stricter emissions regulations due to high NOx and soot emissions emitted from combustion of heavy diesel fuels by compression ignition engines, has led consumers to use renewable, cleaner and cheap fuels. An investigation has been computationally carried out to explore the influences of hydrogen and nitrogen addition on engine performance such as indicated power and indicated specific energy consumption and amounts of pollutant emissions like NOx, soot, and CO in an HSDI (High-Speed Direct Injection) diesel engine. Optimized sub-models, such as turbulence model, spray model, combustion model and emissions models have selected for the main CFD code. Meanwhile, HF (Homogeneity Factor) has been employed for analysing in-cylinder air-fuel mixing quality under various addition conditions. After validations with experimental data of diesel combustion with a single addition of 4% hydrogen and combined addition of 6% hydrogen + 6% nitrogen, investigations have conducted for modeling mixing and combustion processes with additions of hydrogen and nitrogen by ranges of 2–8% (v/v). Results showed that a single addition of H2 increased NOx and decreased CO and soot and improved ISEC and IP. In the case of nitrogen addition, NOx decreased, both CO and soot emission increased and ISEC and IP considerably ruined compared with NDC operation. Based on the results obtained for simultaneous addition of N2 (8% of v/v) and H2 (8% of v/v), NOx and soot emissions decreased by 11.5% and 42.5% respectively, and ISEC and IP improved 25.7% and 13%, respectively. But amount of CO emissions had an increase of 52% should be paid necessary attention as a main disadvantage.  相似文献

In this study, effects of synthetic gas constituents on combustion and emission behavior of premixed H2/CO/CO2/CNG blending synthetic gas flames were experimentally investigated in a swirl stabilized laboratory scale combustor. Effects of these constituents on flashback and blowout equivalence ratios of respective mixtures were also determined. Firstly, mixtures of CNG/H2/CO with varying H2/CO ratios were tested and then each mixture was diluted with the same amount of CO2 (20% by volume) to better represent synthetic gas. H2/CO ratios of tested gas mixtures were so adjusted that heating value of each gas mixture was low, moderate or high. Combustion behavior of such mixtures was evaluated with respect to measured axial and radial temperature values. Moreover, emission behavior was analyzed by means of emitted CO, CO2 and NOx levels. Flame temperature measurements were conducted with B and K type thermocouples. Emission measurements were performed with a flue gas analyzer, which was equipped with a ceramic coated probe, as well. Results of this study revealed the great impact of gas composition on combustion and emission behavior of studied flames. Two main findings are: H2/CO ratio slightly alters temperature distribution throughout combustor, while hydrogen reaction kinetics play the most significant role in synthetic gas combustion (1), CO2 addition tremendously increases emissions of CO (2).  相似文献

Methane/hydrogen combustion represents a concrete solution for the energy scenario to come. Indeed, the addition of hydrogen into the natural gas pipeline is one of the solutions foreseen to reduce CO2 emissions. Nevertheless, the replacement of methane by hydrogen will enhance the reactivity of the system, increasing NOx emissions. To overcome this issue, non-conventional combustion technologies, such as flameless combustion represent an attractive solution. This study aims to improve our understanding of the behaviour of methane/hydrogen blends under flameless conditions by means of experiments and simulations. Several experimental campaigns were conducted to test fuel flexibility for different methane/hydrogen blends, varying the injector geometries, equivalence ratio and dilution degree. It was found that a progressive addition of hydrogen in methane enhanced the combustion features, reducing the ignition delay time and loosing progressively the flameless behaviour of the furnace. Reducing the air injector diameter or increasing the fuel lance length were found to be efficient techniques to reduce the maximum temperature of the system and NOx emissions in the exhausts, reaching values below 30 ppm for pure hydrogen. MILD conditions were achieved up to 75%H2 in molar fraction, with no visible flame structures. Additionally, RANS-based simulations were also conducted to shed further light on the effect of adding hydrogen into the fuel blend. A sensitivity study was conducted for three different fuel blends: pure methane, an equimolar blend and pure hydrogen. The effect of chemistry detail, mixing models, radiation modeling and turbulence models on in-flame temperatures and NOx emissions was also studied. In particular, it was found that the usage of detailed chemistry for NOx, coupled with an adjustment of the PaSR model, filled the gap between experiments and predictions. Finally, a brute-force sensitivity revealed that NNH is the most important route for NOx production.  相似文献

The present research aims to assess the potential of hydrogen in the form of a supplementary fuel to accelerate combustion chemistry and reduce CO emissions of methane fuelled upward swirl gas turbine combustor. Effects of hydrogen enrichment on flame characteristics and chemical kinetics are analysed using Large Eddy Simulations (LES). Flame visualization is performed and measurements of temperature and emissions at the exit of combustor are reported. For the same energy input, flames are relatively broader and shorter at higher hydrogen concentrations. Augmentation of hydrogen is advantageous in terms of flame velocity, temperature, rate of chemical reactions and CO emissions. Higher flame temperature favours NOx emissions at higher hydrogen content. At a constant volumetric fuel flow, reduction in carbon-generated species is attributed to hydrocarbon substitution and chemical kinetic effects are less. Hydrogen addition increases flame temperature, decreases flame dimensions and reduces CO emissions with marginal increase in NOx emissions.  相似文献

Natural gas (NG) is one of the most important and successful alternative fuels for vehicles. Engine combustion and emission fuelled with natural gas have been reviewed by NG/gasoline bi-fuel engine, pure NG engine, NG/diesel dual fuel engine and HCNG engine. Compared to using gasoline, bi-fuel engine using NG exhibits higher thermal efficiency; produces lower HC, CO and PM emissions and higher NOx emission. The bi-fuel mode can not fully exert the advantages of NG. Optimization of structure design for engine chamber, injection parameters including injection timing, injection pressure and multi injection, and lean burn provides a technological route to achieve high efficiency, low emissions and balance between HC and NOx. Compared to diesel, NG/diesel dual fuel engine exhibits longer ignition delay; has lower thermal efficiency at low and partial loads and higher at medium and high loads; emits higher HC and CO emissions and lower PM and NOx emissions. The addition of hydrogen can further improve the thermal efficiency and decrease the HC, CO and PM emissions of NG engine, while significantly increase the NOx emission. In each mode, methane is the major composition of THC emission and it has great warming potential. Methane emission can be decreased by hydrogen addition and after-treatment technology.  相似文献

Investigation on co-combustion of Lakhra coal and rice husk blends was carried out in a drop tube furnace to measure its impact on flue gas emissions and carbon burnout. According to experimental results, the emissions of NO and SO2 were higher in case of combustion of Lakhra coal compared to coal?–rice husk blends combustion. The emissions of CO decreased rapidly at higher furnace temperatures beyond 900°C. Minimum of CO emissions were nearly 45 ppm while SO2 and NO emissions were found to be 554 and 120 ppm, respectively, for 15% biomass blending ratio and at exit furnace temperature of 1000°C. The unburnt carbon was found to be reduced significantly with an increase in furnace temperature and blending ratio. The study has shown that blending of rice husk would be a useful option to minimize SO2 and NO emissions during combustion of Lakhra coal.  相似文献

In most current fossil-based hydrogen production methods, the thermal energy required by the endothermic processes of hydrogen production cycles is supplied by the combustion of a portion of the same fossil fuel feedstock. This increases the fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. This paper analyzes the thermodynamics of several typical fossil fuel-based hydrogen production methods such as steam methane reforming, coal gasification, methane dissociation, and off-gas reforming, to quantify the potential savings of fossil fuels and CO2 emissions associated with the thermal energy requirement. Then matching the heat quality and quantity by solar thermal energy for different processes is examined. It is concluded that steam generation and superheating by solar energy for the supply of gaseous reactants to the hydrogen production cycles is particularly attractive due to the engineering maturity and simplicity. It is also concluded that steam-methane reforming may have fewer engineering challenges because of its single-phase reaction, if the endothermic reaction enthalpy of syngas production step (CO and H2) of coal gasification and steam methane reforming is provided by solar thermal energy. Various solar thermal energy based reactors are discussed for different types of production cycles as well.  相似文献

Ethanol, as one of the carbon-neutral fuels for spark ignition (SI) engine, has been widely used. Dehydration and purification of ethanol during production process will lead to high energy consumption. If hydrous ethanol can be directly applied to the engine, the cost of use will be greatly reduced. Due to the high latent heat of vaporization of ethanol and water, it is necessary to consider the performance of atomization, evaporation and combustion stability when hydrous ethanol is used in engine. As a zero-carbon fuel, hydrogen has excellent characteristics such as low ignition energy, fast flame propagation speed and wide combustion limit. The combination of hydrous ethanol and hydrogen can reduce the use cost and ensure better combustion performance. Therefore, this study explores the performance of hydrous ethanol/hydrogen in SI combined injection engine. The hydrous ethanol is injected into the intake port and the hydrogen is directly injected into the cylinder during the compression stroke. In this study, we firstly analyze the optimal water blending ratio (ω) of hydrous ethanol, which including 0, 3%, 6%, 9% and 12%. The experimental results show that the hydrous ethanol with 9% water ratio has the best performance without hydrogen addition. Based on the 9% water ratio, the effects of hydrogen blending ratio (0, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) on the combustion and emission under different excess air ratio (λ) (1, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4). Hydrogen addition can increase the degree of constant volume combustion, so that the maximum cylinder pressure and temperature increase with the increase of the hydrogen blending ratio (HBR). When λ = 1.3 and HBR = 20%, the maximum in-cylinder pressure can be increased by 108.64% compared to pure hydrous ethanol. Hydrogen effectively increases the indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and reduces the coefficient of variation of IMEP (COVIMEP). Adding hydrogen can reduce CO and HC emissions, while NOx emissions will increase. When λ = 1.2 and HBR increasing from 0 to 20%, the NOx emissions increase by 106.75%, but it is still less than the NOx emissions of pure hydrous ethanol at λ = 1. On the whole, hydrogen direct injection can improve the combustion performance of hydrous ethanol and achieve stable combustion under lean-burn conditions.  相似文献

There are some challenges about NOX emissions exhausted from diesel engines fueled with biodiesel. Due to increasingly stringent emission regulations, the different methods such as varying the engine operating parameters, treatment with antioxidant additive and blending fuels have been adapted to reduce emissions of biodiesel combustion. One of the effective methods is the combustion of dual or blending fuels. Various fuels such as gasoline, hydrogen, natural gas, biogas, different types of alcohols and also fuel additives have been used to reduce biodiesel disadvantages. This study reviews the potential of the different fuels as an additive in biodiesel fuel in correspond to reduce NOX emissions. The general reduction of NOX has been observed with the presence of gasoline, biogas and alcohols in biodiesel blends. The reduction of NOX in biodiesel-hydrogen, biodiesel-diesel or biodiesel–CNG combustion has not been observed through all engine conditions. Moreover the retarding injection timing, the lower injection pressure, EGR higher than 30% can result in the reduced NOX emissions. However it seems the decrease in NOX emissions can be achieved by the use of most fuels in blending with biodiesel under all engine operating conditions, if only the proper injection parameters and blending proportions of fuels are set.  相似文献
