Earlywood ring-width chronologies derived primarily from Douglas-fir trees were used to reconstruct winter–spring (November–May) precipitation and fall–spring (September–June) streamflow volumes for the period 1765–1993 in the forested upper Nazas watershed in Durango, Mexico. The tree-ring data were obtained from mixed conifer stands within or adjacent to the upper Nazas watershed. Precipitation data were derived from one of the longest regional records. The streamflow data were obtained from a guage located in the upper Nazas watershed. The Principal Component 1 (PC1) of nine residual earlywood chronologies accounted for 73% of the variance in November–May precipitation 1967–1993, and 64% for the total period with available data 1941–1993. The mean of three residual earlywood chronologies from Douglas-fir explained 51% of the normalized streamflow at Sardinas from 1971–1992. The 20th century was characterized by severe droughts, especially between 1950 and 1963 that also affected other regions of Mexico and the southwestern United States. Additional droughts of similar or greater magnitude occurred in the 1790s, 1810s, 1860–1870s and 1890–1910s. Similar periods of low flow occur in the September–June streamflow reconstruction between 1765 and 1993. These results indicate that tree-ring chronologies from this region document a high percentage of the precipitation and streamflow variance. Spectral analysis detected significant high periodicities in both records at peaks of 4 and 7 years that could be related to the ENSO frequency bands (approximately 4.0 and 6.25 years). Analysis of the reconstructed records show strong influence of ENSO on precipitation and streamflow amounts on an interannual basis. These results can provide significant inputs to decisions regarding management of water resources that are used to irrigate land in the Comarca Lagunera: specifically they indicate that water budgeting should be managed over longer time periods to account for this ENSO-related variability rather than on the year-to-year basis that is presently used.  相似文献

Tree rings are a natural archive containing valuable information about environmental changes. Among the most sensitive ecosystems to such changes are high-mountain forests. Tree-ring series from such locations are exceptionally valuable both for climate reconstructions and for studying the effects of climate changes on forest ecosystems. The objective of our study is to present new long tree-ring width chronologies of Pinus peuce Griseb. from several locations at Pirin Mountains in southwestern Bulgaria, to explore their correlation with monthly temperatures and precipitation in the research area and to assess their potential for climate reconstruction. We built three long-term index chronologies for the radial increment of P. peuce from treeline locations in the study region. The longest chronology spans 675 years. We studied the impact of monthly air temperature and precipitation on its growth for the past 86 years using multiple regression analysis. Our analysis shows that P. peuce growth is positively influenced by high temperatures at the end of the previous growing season, especially at the two sites in Banderitsa valley until the middle of the 1970s, and negatively affected by cold winters. In some of the sample plots its growth was also positively correlated with high summer temperatures. However, even at these high altitudes in some of the locations on steep slopes P. peuce showed signs of negative impact of drought during the hottest summer months (especially in August). Our chronologies contribute to the paleoclimatic record for southwestern Bulgaria, which could provide baseline information about past climate variability and improve our understanding of current and future environmental changes.  相似文献

Three tree-ring width chronologies were developed from 75 Picea schrenkiana trees ranging from low- to high-elevation in the mountains surrounding the Issyk-Kul Lake, Northeast Kyrgyzstan. The reliable chronologies extend back to the mid-18th and late-19th centuries. Spatial correlation analysis indicates that the chronologies for the relatively high-elevation trees contain large-scale climatic signals, while the chronology at relatively low elevation may reflect the local climate variability. The results of the response of tree growth to climate show that these chronologies contain an annual precipitation signal. Furthermore, the influence of temperature indicates mainly moisture stress that is enhanced with rising elevation. The tree-ring records also captured a wetting trend in eastern Central Asia over the past decades. These new tree-ring width chronologies provide reliable proxies of precipitation variability in Central Asia and contribute to the International Tree-Ring Data Bank.  相似文献

Wood material for at least 12 larch trees at six sites [Larix sibirica Ldb, Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr, Larix cajanderi Mayr] near the northern timberline in Siberia was analyzed to investigate influence of climatic factor changes on tree-ring growth at high latitudes. Tree-ring cell size, maximum latewood density and ring width measured by means of image analysis and X-ray radiodensitometry and calculated latewood cell-wall thickness were used. Correlation analysis of tree-ring structure parameter chronologies with temperatures averaged over periods of 5 days (pentad) shows that early summer temperature (mean for 5-6 pentads, depending on the region, starting from the middle of June) and date of snow melt are the most important factors that define seasonal growth and tree-ring structure. Analysis of instrumental climatic data indicates that a positive trend of early summer temperature was combined with winter precipitation (October-April) increase and this combination leads to later snow melt. Based of the results of tree-ring growth modelling, it was shown that later snow melt (hence, delayed initiation of cambial activity and, as a result, decrease of wood production) explains the changes in the relationship between tree ring width and summer temperature dynamics observed after the 1960s for a large area of the Siberian Subarctic. The understanding of the role of winter precipitation in controlling ring growth, through its effect on the timing of cambial activation, suggests the possibility of using ring structure parameters to create reconstructions of past winter precipitation variations.  相似文献

Tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies have been widely and long-time used to reconstruct past climate variations in the Andes in South America. The use of tree-ring isotopic chronologies is still not widespread in this region although they have proved to be very efficient climate proxies. Araucaria araucana (Molina) K. Koch is a conifer tree species with some multi-century-old individuals that offers an excellent opportunity to measure stable carbon (δ13C) and oxygen (δ18O) isotopes in cellulose from long tree-ring records. Here, we explore whether current or stored carbohydrates are used for A. araucana radial growth and we assess the potential of a tree-ring isotopic record of to study past climate variability. Eleven A. araucana cores from a dry and high-elevation forest at the northern border of Patagonia, Argentina (38°55’S, 70°44’W) were selected for stable isotopes analyses. The strong correlation between the isotopic composition of the first and second parts of the same ring, but also the strong relationships between δ13C and δ18O records with climate parameters of the current growing season such as temperature, show that tree-rings are built mostly with carbohydrates produced during the current growing season with little or no supply from storage or reserves. This finding leads to reconsidering the interpretation of the legacy effect (i.e. ecological memory effects) based on the previously described strong negative correlation between A. araucana TRW chronologies and previous growing season temperature and suggests a dependence of radial tree growth on the level of development of organs. Regarding climate sensitivity, the A. araucana tree-ring δ13C chronology is strongly related to current summer temperature (r = 0.82, p < 0.001), vapour pressure deficit (VPD; r = 0.79, p < 0.001), precipitation (r = −0.53, p < 0.001) and SPEI2 (r = −0.73, p < 0.001). These strong relationships support the use of δ13C of A. araucana tree-ring cellulose to reconstruct past temperature variations at regional scale in relation with large-atmospheric drivers of climate variability such as the Southern Annular Mode. The A. araucana tree-ring δ18O chronology is also correlated with temperature (r = 0.42, p < 0.01) and VPD (r = 0.45, p < 0.01) of the winter preceding the growing season. This suggests that trees are using water from precipitation infiltrated in the soil during the previous recharge period (autumn-winter). The weak correlations of δ18O with current summer atmospheric conditions and the decoupling between δ18O and δ13C, may be due to a high rate of oxygen exchange between sugars and xylem water (Pex) during cellulose synthesis, which dampens evaporative isotopic fractionation.  相似文献

Although it has been widely recognized that tree-ring response to climate drivers may change over recent decades, often due to anthropogenic environment changes, there are fewer reports of such changes in earlier pre-warming periods. In this paper we report on the pre-1930 unstable relationship between climate and tree-ring width (TRW) of Pinus taiwanensis Hayata in southeastern China based on reliable long-term temperature data. TRW of P. taiwanensis is strongly controlled by temperatures in two seasons, previous spring to summer (March to August, mainly June to July) and previous winter to current spring (December to March). However, TRW are insensitive to previous spring to summer temperature between 1890 and 1930. Reduced summer temperature variability, changing regimes of spring-summer temperature and precipitation, and complicated tree physiological processes behind the complex growth-climate relationship are the more likely causes of this phenomenon. This study adds to the body of knowledge that lower climate sensitivity of tree rings is not specific to the most recent decades.  相似文献

Tree-ring widths and stable carbon and oxygen isotopes of five European larch trees from Lötschental, Switzerland were investigated for the period 1900–2004. The objective was to test the suitability of each of these parameters for high-frequency climate reconstructions. This is of special interest with regard to the problem of cyclic larch budmoth (LBM) infestations of alpine larch trees. The results clearly demonstrate that tree-ring width chronologies are not suitable for high-frequency reconstructions because infestations lead to variably reduced tree-ring increments, largely suppressing climate signals. On the other hand, the stable isotope chronologies proved less affected by larch budmoth outbreaks, independent of the strength of the infestations. The correlation of the carbon isotopes with summer temperatures was especially high (r = 0.73) and with precipitation lower but nevertheless significant (r = ?0.43). Oxygen isotopes were also correlated with summer temperature (r = 0.46); however, a certain perturbation of normal oxygen isotope signatures due to LBM outbreaks was evident. Contrary to tree-ring widths, none of the LBM outbreaks caused a significant disturbance of the current year’s isotopic climate signal and, most importantly, there were no delayed effects in the following years. Thus, stable carbon isotopes in tree-ring chronologies of the European larch provide an excellent opportunity for high-frequency temperature reconstructions.  相似文献

Broad-leaved tree species have rarely been used in dendroclimatology and dendrohydrology in arid Central Asia. Core samples of Populus xjrtyschensis Ch. Y. Yang were collected along the Tuoshigan River in 2015. Correlation and response analyses indicate that the radial growth of P. xjrtyschensis shows a strong relationship to streamflow and a weak response to climate. We suggest that summer streamflow is a limiting factor for the radial growth of P. xjrtyschensis along the Tuoshigan River. Using tree-ring data from P. xjrtyschensis, we reconstructed the historical summer streamflow of the Tuoshigan River back to 1900. The reconstruction has an adjusted r2 of 0.407 (1957–2006). Statistical verification methods and historical documents indicate that the reconstructed series is stable and reliable. The results reveal that the beginning of the 20th century and the end of the 20th century to the present experienced above average streamflow, while the mid-20th century was characterized by a long dry period. The reconstructed streamflow data series revealed 6-yr (99%), 11-yr (95%) and 17–25-yr (99%) cycles. We suggest that variability in summer streamflow of the Tuoshigan River may be related to solar activity and large-scale oscillations in the climate system.  相似文献

This study concerns dendrochronology and dendroclimatology of yew growing in Poland. The yew (Taxus baccata L.), a long-lived, slow-growing tree, is regarded as a species threatened with extinction. The eastern boundary of its range transects Poland. The analyses were performed on 34 yew populations which are protected as parts of nature reserves, as nature monuments, or which are planned to be protected. Samples were collected using Pressler borer from a total of 774 trees yielding 1307 profiles. Classical dating techniques (including cross-dating method) were subsequently used to reconstruct 34 local chronologies. Average tree-ring width was 0.84 mm and ranged from 0.27 to 1.47 mm. For most stands, the age of the yew trees is overestimated. The studied populations most frequently are 100–200 years old, and the oldest yew trees in Poland are growing in the KS population (age estimated at 500–600 years). Average tree-ring width was found to be strongly dependent on the chronology length/tree age. The 674 pointer years calculated for the local chronologies served as a basis for determining pointer years for the entire study area. Negative years include: 1862, 1865, 1917, 1927, 1940, 1947, 1956, 1963, 1969, 1976, 1979, 1993, 1996, and 2003. Positive years are: 1884, 1914, 1916, 1965, 1977, 1988, 1997, and 2007. Analysis of weather conditions in those years demonstrated a strong relationship between tree-ring width and air temperature in winter, pre-spring, and early spring. Higher-than-average temperatures during those seasons correlate positively with yew tree-ring width. Response function analysis performed for local and regional chronologies point to a dominant role of air temperature in December of the year preceding growth and in January, February, and March of the current year (linear relationships). June precipitation is an additional factor affecting tree-ring width in some areas of northern and northwestern Poland: the higher the precipitation, the wider the tree-rings. The results obtained, particularly those concerning growth-climate relationships and dendroclimatic regionalisation, can be used in the on-going programme of yew restitution in Poland.  相似文献

The relationship of streamflow records of the Lachen River with tree-ring parameters of total tree-ring width (TRW), earlywood width (EWW) and latewood width (LWW) chronologies of Larix griffithiana from Lachen, North Sikkim, Eastern Himalaya was generated. These chronologies correlate significantly with the observed discharge of the Lachen River where the EWW chronology explains 61.2% of the streamflow variance. Based on this result, Lachen River discharge for the period of previous year March to current year February was reconstructed using EWW chronology, which extends back to AD 1790. In the smoothed reconstructed data the period of extreme low streamflows were during AD 1791–1805, 1813–1822 and 1914–1925 and the extreme highs were during AD 1823–1835, 1879–1890, 1926–1946 and 1980–1989. The streamflow is also found to be lower than average during the monsoon failure (or East India Drought) of AD 1792–1796 and past great droughts of AD 1876–1878. The lower tree growth during AD 1816–1822 is consistent with that of the Tambora volcanic eruption of Indonesia in AD 1815. High spectral power at 4–8 years in the reconstructed streamflow is similar to that of ENSO range.  相似文献

Climatic signals in beech tree-ring width series from Central Italy have been studied over different periods of time. Prewhitened tree-ring chronologies respond mainly to summer precipitation and they do not correlate in a significant manner with the winter North Atlantic oscillation (NAO) index. In this high-frequency pattern the NAO signs are only found on a small number of rings characterized by being very narrow or wide. By contrast, tree-ring width chronologies in which all the frequency components are conserved were significantly related to the NAO. The significant inverse correlation between actual measurements of ring width and NAO is a consequence of the availability of water in the soil at the beginning of the growing season. In fact, in the Mediterranean area the recharging of soil moisture depends on the amount of winter precipitation, which is inversely correlated with the NAO. Strong signals of winter precipitation and NAO are found in the low-frequency components of tree-ring growth. Received: 18 March 1999 / Revised: 29 February 2000 / Accepted: 1 March 2000  相似文献

Over the past two decades, the dendroclimate community has produced various annually resolved, warm season temperature reconstructions for the extratropical Northern Hemisphere. Here we compare these tree-ring based reconstructions back to 831 CE and present a set of basic metrics to provide guidance for non-specialists on their interpretation and use. We specifically draw attention to (i) the imbalance between (numerous) short and (few) long site chronologies incorporated into the hemispheric means, (ii) the beneficial effects of including maximum latewood density chronologies in the recently published reconstructions, (iii) a decrease in reconstruction covariance prior to 1400 CE, and (iv) the varying amplitudes and trends of reconstructed temperatures over the past 1100 years. Whereas the reconstructions agree on several important features, such as warmth during medieval times and cooler temperatures in the 17th and 19th centuries, they still exhibit substantial differences during 13th and 14th centuries. We caution users who might consider combining the reconstructions through simple averaging that all reconstructions share some of the same underlying tree-ring data, and provide four recommendations to guide future efforts to better understand past millennium temperature variability.  相似文献

Searching for a robust tree-ring parameter useful for paleoclimatic purposes is one of the most demanding topics in the modern paleoscience. Since Blue Intensity has already expressed itself in different geographical locations all over the world as a possible replacement for maximum density, close attention is paid to investigate features of the inferred signal. The Solovki Islands is a unique location in Northern Russia where two important factors that make this territory attractive for developing a long tree-ring chronology have been met: modern long-living trees and building activities using old trees that were started by monks in the middle of the 16th century. The main goal of the research is to develop pine and spruce chronologies based on tree-ring width (TRW) and delta Blue Intensity (dBI) and to assess the ability of these parameters to be used as climate predictors. As a result, 14 conifer chronologies from 7 sites (4 for pine and 3 for spruce) were developed. The composite pine and spruce chronologies span a period of 474 and 378 years each. Cross-correlation of dBI-based chronologies of both conifers is high (r = up to 0.71 while for TRW-based chronologies it is lower on average (−0.18 to 0.63). Intra-species correlation of TRW chronologies in some cases achieved even negative values (r = −0.18. Discrepancies found between TRW chronologies of pine and spruce could be explained by differences in climatic signals. Response function analysis with monthly temperatures revealed that growth of pine depends on the previous August, while spruce has a temporally stable and strong relation to June temperatures. Compared to TRW, dBI-based chronologies have a high correlation with summer temperatures (r = 0.64 and 0.66 for spruce and pine, respectively). Presented research points out the importance of the response function analysis suggesting that depending on goals of the study several tree-ring parameters could be used, e.g., tree-ring width of spruce responses to June temperatures, while dBI to the whole summer.  相似文献

We report new data on tree-ring growth in northern European Russia, a region with a hitherto relatively sparse tree-ring network. We explore its associations with climate variability. Areas, sampling locations and trees were selected for representativeness rather than climate sensitivity. Using tree rings from 651 conifers from six widely dispersed areas we show strong intercorrelation between trees within each major conifer species within and between areas. Regional composite tree-ring series for spruce and pine contain a major fraction of decadal and multidecadal variability. The most likely driver of this common variability is interannual to multidecadal climate variability. Gridded monthly instrumental climate data for the period 1902–2008, particularly mean temperature and total precipitation, were tested as predictors of each local species-specific tree-ring site chronology. The most consistent pattern emerged for spruce at all but the southernmost area. Cool and moist summers the year before growth were consistent drivers of spruce ring growth throughout the period, with no change in recent decades. Self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index for prior summer was also a strong and consistent driver of spruce ring growth. For pine, there was a weaker but similarly stable association between larger rings and warm, moist conditions, in this case in the current summer. These associations were also identified at multidecadal time scales, particularly for spruce. On the other hand, the specific role of moisture variability in determining interannual to multidecadal variability in tree growth in this high latitude region raises questions about the relative vulnerability of spruce and pine there under global warming.  相似文献

Tree growth sensitivity to climate can vary over space and time. This variability generates inconsistency in growth response to climate, which makes it difficult to assess the effects of past climate and global climate change on tree growth. A previous short-term study of Pseudopiptadenia contorta found a consistent growth response to climate in distinct locations, which raises the question, is the growth response of P. contorta to climate consistent over the long-term? We aimed to assess whether there is a common pattern of variation in tree-ring width, build tree-ring width chronologies, and verify the consistency of the climate-growth response of P. contorta in two Atlantic Forest remnants. Wood samples were collected in Reserva Biológica de Poço das Antas (RBPA) and Reserva Biológica de Tinguá (RBT) in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Conventional dendrochronology methods were used for cross-dating, to build chronologies and to assess the climate-growth relationship. A common growth pattern was detected for P. contorta, and two tree-ring width chronologies were constructed. A congruent growth response was found for trees of RBPA and RBT to annual and spring precipitation as well as precipitation in the rainy months. Other climate-growth relationships were detected with other precipitation and temperature variables. Considering that P. contorta is a widespread species, occurring in other Brazilian biomes and forest formations, it is a promising model for developing further dendrochronological research including regional networks of replicated site chronologies, which could facilitate the reconstruction of historical climatic series and predictions of future impacts of climate change in tropical areas.  相似文献

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) is the most important source of winter atmospheric variability in the northern hemisphere. NAO inversely reflects the precipitation regime, which plays a fundamental role in Mediterranean regions, e.g., by recharging the water table. As no attempt has been made thus far to analyze the relationship between NAO variability and tree radial growth in coastal Mediterranean conifers, this paper identifies the monthly, winter, annual, and decadal influence of NAO on tree-ring chronologies of six planted Pinus pinea L. populations distributed along the Tyrrhenian coasts of central Italy. Through multidimensional analyses, we identified tree-ring chronology associations in two main groups. The influence of NAO on the regional chronologies was identified with correlation functions for the comparison period between 1949 and 2003 at both annual and decadal timescales. Results indicate that winter NAO influence on radial tree growth at annual and decadal timescales may depend on geographical location, site characteristics, and the age structure of tree-ring chronologies. These results contribute to a better understanding of the P. pinea coastal forest ecology and provide evidence of large-scale climatic forcings that influence forest Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献

The black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia Linn.) is the dominant tree species in the “grain for green” project on the Loess Plateau (LP) of China, and brings many ecological benefits to this planted region. However, there are concerns regarding its suitability as a plantation forest species in different regions of the LP. We used a dendroclimatological approach to investigate the radial growth response of black locust to varying climate in two sites on the LP with differing precipitation gradients. We took tree-ring samples from black locust in Yongshou County (in the semi-humid southern LP) and Shenmu County (in the semi-arid northern LP), and developed tree-ring width (TRW) chronologies for each. We performed moving correlation analyses between TRW chronologies and aggregated thermal (maximum temperature (TMX), minimum temperature (TMN), mean temperature (TMP)) and hydroclimatic factors (precipitation, self-calibrated Drought Severity Index (scPDSI), and humidity). The results demonstrated the increased influence of thermal factors during autumn, and the generally decreased influence of hydroclimatic factors on black locust radial growth in Yongshou, compared with the decreasing influence of thermal factors (during all seasons) and increasing influence of hydroclimatic factors (precipitation during summer, scPDSI and humidity during autumn) on black locust radial growth in Shenmu. The results indicated that black locust radial growth might benefit from the current climatic conditions in the southern LP. However, black locust radial growth stressed by water availability in the northern LP, which may reduce its vitality and productivity as climate warms in the future. These results have implications for regional forestry planning and ecological restoration strategies on the LP.  相似文献

Although two centennial Scots pine chronologies for the dating of timber in Lithuania were constructed in the 2000 s, the Baltic countries still lack a network of regional chronologies. To fill this gap, we constructed three Scots pine chronologies for western, central and eastern Lithuania. Here we present chronologies covering the fifteen to the twentieth centuries. Our analysis revealed a strong teleconnection of the compiled chronologies with Scots pine chronologies constructed in Poland, Latvia, Estonia, and Belarus. The established link with Belarus chronologies and the fact that some of the timber in Lithuanian buildings could be of Belarus origin is important in the long-distance timber trade during the last 500 years. Dendroclimatological analysis has shown that constructed tree-ring chronologies are sensitive to air temperatures in February and March. Therefore, the constructed chronologies have a potential for climate reconstructions and dendroprovenancing.  相似文献
