This article presents the findings of a numerical simulation model of the spray-drying process in a two-stage horizontal chamber design with the aid of a computational fluid dynamic (CFD) model. The model describes heat, mass, and momentum transfer between two phases; namely, a continuous gas phase and a discrete phase of droplets (or particles), using the finite volume method. In this study, a new two-dimensional horizontal spray dryer (HSD) geometry is considered as a pilot study into the spray-drying process in this novel chamber configuration. The tested model is able to predict some important features of the spray-drying process, such as air flow patterns indicating recirculation zones and particle trajectory plots. Some performance parameters for spray drying, such as the rate of evaporation, average volumetric heat and mass transfer rates, etc., are calculated and discussed. This two-stage drying process especially applicable for the horizontal spray dryer (HSD) model is investigated and modeled. The bottom wall of the HSD is assumed to be a shallow fluid bed used for second stage drying. In this article, the fluid bed drying conditions are changed and compared. The drying within the fluid bed itself is not modeled in this study, however. It is shown that the particle residence time is higher when the fluid bed is included. The drying performance of this two-stage horizontal spray dryer is expected to be better than that of a single-stage dryer.  相似文献

With advances in digital computer technology it is now possible to employ mathematical models to accelerate the innovation process in most industrial sectors. This article presents an illustration of this process to arrive at a new conceptual design for the traditional spray-drying process. Although not commonly recognized, there are some advantages to orienting the spray in a horizontal direction rather than the conventional vertical one. This requires the spray chamber to be redesigned completely without any prior guidance based on empirical data or observations. Here we have used a computational fluid dynamic model that has been validated with data for conventional vertical spray dyers to arrive at several conceptual designs of a horizontal spray dryer (HSD). Several stages in the evolution of the HSD design concept are presented and discussed. It is shown that use of a validated mathematical model can speed up the development process for an innovative product or process with very substantial savings in time, effort, and cost. This article presents simulation results for several spray chamber designs and points out the importance of the design of the air inlet and outlet arrangement for optimal efficiency and effectiveness.  相似文献

The main objective of this work was to experimentally and numerically investigate the Liu Shu River oil shale drying by the means of flue gas in a fluidized bed dryer. Several experiments were performed under different temperatures conditions. The moisture content of oil shale was measured during the experiments. The two-stage drying model was incorporated in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package FLUENT via user-defined functions (UDF) and utilized for simulation of heat and mass transfer of oil shale drying in the fluidized bed dryer. The simulation results for solid moisture content agreed well with experimental data. The effects of the temperature and velocity of flue gas, initial bed height, and the particle size on the drying characteristics were predicted and analyzed. It is shown that the gas temperature and velocity are the important parameters in the whole drying process. The particle size has more obvious influence in the falling drying period than the constant drying period. The temperatures of gas and solid phases were monitored. It is shown that the so-called “near gas distributor zone” is the most effective heat transfer zone, which agrees well with the calculated value. The system quickly reached thermal equilibrium, characterizing a nearly isothermal bed. The developed model provides a very good demonstration to describe the oil shale drying in the fluidized bed dryer, and may provide important information for design, optimization of operation conditions.  相似文献

This work investigates the effect of maltodextrin addition on the drying kinetics and the stickiness during spray drying of tomato pulp in dehumidified air. A pilot-scale spray dryer was employed for the spray-drying process. The modification made to the original design consisted in connecting the spray dryer inlet air intake to an absorption air dryer. Twenty-seven different experiments were conducted varying the dextrose equivalent (DE) of the maltodextrin, the ratio (tomato pulp solids)/(maltodextrin solids), and the inlet air temperature. Data for the residue remaining on the walls were gathered. Furthermore, the effect of maltodextrin addition on the drying kinetics and the stickiness of the product was investigated using a numerical simulation of the spray-drying process modeled with the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code Fluent. The code was used to determine the droplet moisture content and temperature profiles during the spray-drying experiments conducted in this work. The stickiness was determined by comparing the droplet temperature with its surface layer glass transition temperature (Tg ). The Tg was determined using a weighted mean rule based on the moisture content profiles calculated by the CFD code and the experimental data of Tg , which were obtained for the different tomato pulp and maltodextrin samples and fitted to the Gordon and Taylor model.  相似文献

The two-phase flow theoretical model is based on a combined Eulerian-Lagrangian approach and takes binary interactions (coalescence or bouncing) between spray droplets into consideration. Validation of the model (incorporated in FLUENT 6.3.26) demonstrated good agreement and consistency with the literature data. The results of transient simulations showed that droplet-droplet interactions displace the region of heat and mass transfer from the central core toward the periphery of the drying chamber. It was also found that insulation of the spray dryer can substantially affect temperature and humidity patterns, whereas its influence on the velocity flow field is less marked.  相似文献

An original experimental method is used to determine drying kinetic at particle scale. The particle scale kinetics was obtained by immersion of a small mass of wet polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles (cake) in a batch dense fluidized bed containing inert hot particles (glass bead). The results are summarized here and prove clearly that the PVC drying is controlled by a competition between internal and external transfers. The drying kinetic was described by a particle scale model taking into account the convective–diffusive (mass transfer) and the convective–evaporative (heat transfer) phenomena. To validate this model with the experimental data, the experimental fluidized bed dryer is modeled following two different approaches: a perfect stirred reactor model and a 3D numerical simulation using the multiphase flow code NEPTUNE_CFD. The aim of this 3D simulation is to simulate the phenomena occurring, at local scale, in a dense fluidized bed dryer and to show the limitations of the perfect stirred reactor model.  相似文献

In this article, a two-stage convective drying strategy was presented for dehydration of flue-cured tobacco. In order to develop the multistage drying method of tobacco, two-stage drying as well as traditional single-stage drying of cut tobacco was experimentally evaluated and accurately simulated by proposed heat and mass transfer models. The experiments were performed in a dual fixed bed dryer. Different air temperature combinations of 120°C/90°C, 110°C/80°C, and 100°C/70°C were employed during two-stage drying. The drying rate and temperature variations of cut tobacco were investigated. The results showed that the average drying rates during two-stage drying were nearly 50% higher than those obtained from lower-temperature single-stage drying. On the other hand, the two-stage drying method, which used high air temperature for the early period and low temperature for the late period, could reduce the exposure of tobacco to high temperature due to the low final temperature of the dried sample. The temperature and moisture evolution of cut tobacco at different air temperature combinations were consistent with simulation results by developed heat and mass transfer models. This indicated that the models had a good prediction precision for two-stage drying of cut tobacco. The model predictions can be useful for the design of a feasible two-stage drying process for flue-cured tobacco.  相似文献

In this work, a novel methodology for the development of a high-accuracy computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for the spray-drying process is described. Starting point is an own spatially resolving model of droplet/particle drying, which was developed and validated on the basis of a series of single droplet drying (SDD) experiments. This sophisticated model is transformed to a much simpler version: the characteristic drying curve approach, after running the full SDD model in a wide range of operating conditions. Then, the obtained reduced model is implemented into the CFD solver. The CFD spray-drying model takes into account the hydrodynamics of the continuous phase, particle drying kinetics, changes in the particle diameter, and the heat loss from the drying chamber to the environment. Validation of the entire procedure is provided by data obtained from drying experiments performed in a co-current laboratory spray tower. High accuracy of the developed CFD model of skim milk spray drying has been found for both phases, for the mean outlet temperature of the continuous phase (air) and for the change in average particle moisture content along the spray tower (discrete phase).  相似文献

A dynamic mathematical model for drying of agricultural products in an indirect cabinet solar dryer is presented. This model describes the heat and mass transfer in the drying chamber and also considers the heat transfer and temperature distribution in a solar collector under transient conditions. For this purpose, using conservation laws of heat and mass transfer and considering the physical phenomena occurring in a solar dryer, the governing equations are derived and solved numerically. The model solution provides an effective tool to study the variation of temperature and humidity of the drying air, drying material temperature, and its moisture content on each tray. The predicted results are compared with available experimental data. It is shown that the model can predict the performance of the cabinet solar dryer in unsteady-state operating conditions well. Furthermore, the effect of some operating parameters on the performance and efficiency of dryer is investigated and compared with selected published data.  相似文献

Mono-disperse droplet generation and subsequent drying in a spray-drying chamber, i.e., mono-disperse droplet spray dryer (MDDSD), provides a better-defined “flight experience” for liquid droplets. The related particle formation can be investigated more easily than that in the usual poly-disperse droplet spray dryer (PDDSD). Previously, skim milk, which is of high protein and high lactose content and is one of the two main dairy fluids that are processed into powder form for consumer markets, was subjected to this kind of investigation in Australia. Here, whole milk, which is the other main dairy fluid, has been spray-dried in a MDDSD set-up at Xiamen University (China). Because the initial droplet size is uniform, measurable, and the particle morphology after drying is consistent, it was possible to investigate the initial solids content effect upon shrinkage and inlet air temperature effect upon shrinkage. In contrast to what had been found for skim milk particles, the formation of the fat-containing (whole milk) particles does not follow the perfect shrinkage model as the skim milk does. This work has improved our quantitative understanding of the whole milk drying process. A fundamental analysis invoked with a modified one-dimensional modeling of spray drying has been given that has shown some further insight about the process.  相似文献

Fluidized bed dryers are often used to extract water from granular materials. When the drying process is mainly limited by the resistance against water transport inside the particle the drying behaviour is said to be diffusion-limited. In the literature there are several models that predict this drying process with very diverging results. In this study a model is set up to arrive at a better prediction for this drying process. The heat and mass transfer in the granular material and the drying air is described. The resulting equations are solved numerically. The model must be extended to incorporate the heat capacity of the dryer.  相似文献

This paper presents a mathematical model based on a three-phase theory, which is used to describe the mass and heat transfer between the gas and solids phases in a batch fluidised bed dryer. In the model, it is assumed that the dilute phase (i.e., bubble) is plug flow while the interstitial gas and the solid particles are considered as being perfectly mixed. The thermal conductivity of wet particles is modelled using a serial and parallel circuit. The moisture diffusion in wet particles was simulated using a numerical finite volume method. Applying a simplified lumped model to a single solid particle, the heat and mass transfer between the interstitial gas and solid phase is taken into account during the whole drying process as three drying rate periods: warming-up, constant rate and falling-rate. The effects of the process parameters, such as particle size, gas velocity, inlet gas temperature and relative humidity, on the moisture content of solids in the bed have been studied by numerical computation using this model. The results are in good agreement with experimental data of heat and mass transfer in fluidised bed dryers. The model will be employed for online simulation of a fluidised bed dryer and for online control.  相似文献

Closed-loop drying systems are an attractive alternative to conventional drying systems because they provide a wide range of potential advantages. Consequently, type of drying process is attracting increased interest. Rotary drying of wood particles can be assumed as an incorporated process involving fluid–solid interactions and simultaneous heat and mass transfer within and between the particles. Understanding these mechanisms during rotary drying processes may result in determination of the optimum drying parameters and improved dryer design. In this study, due to the complexity and nonlinearity of the momentum, heat, and mass transfer equations, a computerized mathematical model of a closed-loop triple-pass concurrent rotary dryer was developed to simulate the drying behavior of poplar wood particles within the dryer drums. Wood particle moisture content and temperature, drying air temperature, and drying air humidity ratio along the drums lengths can be simulated using this model. The model presented in this work has been shown to successfully predict the steady-state behavior of a concurrent rotary dryer and can be used to analyze the effects of various drying process parameters on the performance of the closed-loop triple-pass rotary dryer to determine the optimum drying parameters. The model was also used to simulate the performance of industrial closed-loop rotary dryers under various operating conditions.  相似文献

Spray dryers featuring a fluid bed integrated into the base of a spray drying chamber have proved one of the most significant developments introduced into industry during the last decade, producing dust-free particulates under low product temperature conditions. The latest design development involves all particulate collection and exhaust air cleaning within the drying chamber with the use of integrated metallic filter elements (with CIP capability). This eliminates handling of fines outside the drying chamber and simplifies the exhaust air system contributing to lower pressure drop losses and lower overall energy consumption. This paper describes the performance of a pilot plant sized spray dryer featuring a drying chamber with both integrated particulate filters and fluid bed. Various products were tested. The results showed that the placing of particulate filters inside the drying chamber does not adversely affect the agglomeration process and that the powder quality compared with that achieved in a standard Fluidized Spray Dryer can be reproduced in this new design concept, with every possibility for improved quality due to no powder handling outside the drying chamber. The work also showed that by containing the powder within the drying chamber, notable operational advantages are apparent and that scale-up of the design concept represents no apparent difficulties.  相似文献
