This study aims to explore the ways of involving children with autism in participatory product design processes. Due to the impaired skills of children with autism, a key aspect of the process is to gain an understanding of the nature of the disorder and how these children interact with their social and material surroundings as well as their daily life problems. Considering this, a case study was conducted with children with autism, their parents and teachers, and also industrial design students in a public special education centre in ?zmir, Turkey. The design task was to reconsider the conventional trampoline design with respect to the needs of the sample group and the special education centre as well as the benefits it provides. The task was based on the patterns of behaviours, actions and movement. Observations, interviews and questionnaires were carried out, as well as collaborative meetings and discussion meetings. Through the case study, the findings provided insights into conducting a participatory process with children with autism, the roles of the participants, and the interaction and communication among them. Furthermore, participants’ attitude towards participatory design, the potential benefits of the design process, and innovations to benefit children with autism were explained. 相似文献

In response to the inadaptation and difficulties for architects in the use of engineering simulation tools and optimization methods, a method is proposed for graphical performance evaluation achieved with a developed plugin for Grasshopper as an architect-friendly tool to support design exploration in early stage. The proposed method follows forward workflow for interactive feedback of performance, focusing on thermal and visual comfort upon a variety of design options. A case study of shading design is demonstrated. The demonstration illustrated an intuitive and graphical process for qualitative performance evaluation, which is assisted by an overall ratio ranking the integrated performance of design options for a quantitative comparison. Compared with engineering optimization methods that focus on optimal performance-based solutions, the proposed method presented graphical feedbacks on design performance that are interactive with the designer for performance-informed decision making. In this way, the proposed method stimulates the effective and positive application of engineering tools and judgment at the early stage of iterative design. 相似文献

Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is a topic of interest in the design of economical structures. It allows designers to effectively reach a balanced cost-safety configuration in the design of structures. In this study, a simulation-based method is presented for RBDO problems in which the design variables are treated as random variables. The method works by uniformly distributing samples in the design space and employing a feature that allows the designer to obtain the optimum design solution by performing only one simulation run. Moreover, the proposed feature also helps the designer to use the results of aforementioned run to provide multi-level design solutions when the arrangement of the design problem is changed. The robustness and accuracy of the method are examined by solving design problems with highly nonlinear constraints and comparing with the results of common RBDO methods. The results confirm the robustness of the method for highly nonlinear problems with different design arrangements. 相似文献

Recommended procedures of finite element modeling for predicting the structural behaviors of single shear bolted connections in cold-formed austenitic stainless steel are presented in this paper. It was shown that predictions by FE analysis method were in a good correspondence with test results for ultimate behaviors such as failure mode, ultimate strength and out-of-plane curling. A parametric study on four-bolted connections with extended variables; plate thickness, end distance and edge distance is performed in order to consider the influence of curling on ultimate strength for practical design and ultimate strengths obtained from FE analysis results are also compared with those calculated by current design standards and recently modified equations by Kuwamura. It is found that Kuwamura's equations, which are specified by SSBA design manual are more valid for predicting ultimate strength of bolted connection without curling compared to other design specifications, while for specimens curled in FE analysis, Kuwamura's equations overestimated the ultimate strength due to strength reduction caused by curling and current other design standards showed a tendency to underestimate the ultimate strength of block shear fracture regardless of curling occurrence. Consequently, revised design formula for considering the effect of curling on bolted connection is proposed in this paper using correlations between strength reduction ratio and plate thickness. Furthermore, the validation of proposed design equations in predicting the ultimate strength is verified through comparisons with existing test results and additional FE analysis results. 相似文献
