Blend films of poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were obtained by evaporation of hexafluoroisopropanol solutions of both components. The component interaction, crystallization behavior, and miscibility of these blends were studied by solid‐state NMR and other conventional methods, such as Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). The existence of two series of isolated and constant glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) independent of the blend composition indicates that PLLA and PVA are immiscible in the amorphous region. However, the DSC data still demonstrates that some degree of compatibility related to blend composition exists in both PLLA/atactic‐PVA (a‐PVA) and PLLA/syndiotactic‐PVA (s‐PVA) blend systems. Furthermore, the formation of interpolymer hydrogen bonding in the amorphous region, which is regarded as the driving force leading to some degree of component compatibility in these immiscible systems, is confirmed by FTIR and further analyzed by 13C solid‐state NMR analyses, especially for the blends with low PLLA contents. Although the crystallization kinetics of one component (especially PVA) were affected by another component, WAXD measurement shows that these blends still possess two isolated crystalline PLLA and PVA phases other than the so‐called cocrystalline phase. 13C solid‐state NMR analysis excludes the interpolymer hydrogen bonding in the crystalline region. The mechanical properties (tensile strength and elongation at break) of blend films are consistent with the immiscible but somewhat compatible nature of these blends. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The miscibility, crystallization and subsequent melting behavior in binary biodegradable polymer blends of poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA) and low molecular weight poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) have been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). DSC analysis results indicted that PLLA showed no miscibility with high molecular weight PHB (Mw = 650,000 g mol−1) in the 80/20, 60/40, 40/60, 20/80 composition range of the PHB/PLLA blends. On the other hand, it showed some limited miscibility with low molecular weight PHB (Mw = 5000 g mol−1) when the PHB content was below 25%, as evidenced by small changes in the glass transition temperature of PLLA. The partial miscibility was further supported by changes of cold-crystallization behavior of PLLA in the blends. During the nonisothermal crystallization, it was found that the addition of a small amount of PHB up to 30% made the cold-crystallization of PLLA occur in the lower temperature. Meanwhile, the crystallization of PHB and PLLA was observed in the heating process by monitoring characteristic IR bands of each component for the low molecular weight PHB/PLLA 20/80 and 30/70 blends. The temperature-dependent IR and WAXD results also revealed that for PLLA component crystallization, the disorder (α′) phase of PLLA was produced, and that the α′ phase changed to the order (α) phase just prior to the melting point.  相似文献

The effects of stereo‐regularity and molecular weight of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) on ternary polymer blends was analyzed using optical clarity as the primary screening method. This enabled the ready identification of phase boundaries of optically clear and apparently miscible regions. Solvent‐mediated blends of amorphous poly(dl ‐lactide) (PDLLA) and semi‐crystalline poly(l ‐lactide) (PLLA) with various molecular weights from high to low, along with polycaprolactone (PCL) and cellulose acetate butyrate (CAB) were used in this study. The nature and extent of crystallinity of the blends was examined by X‐ray diffraction, which, in conjunction with differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, provided information about the competition between polymer crystallization (self‐aggregating behavior) and intermixing of the macromolecules. Thus, allowing the primary physical cause of transparency loss to be identified. The results of the ternary blends optical clarity showed the position of the phase boundaries in PLLA/PCL/CAB and PDLLA/PCL/CAB blends are significantly affected by the stereo‐regularity and molecular weight of PLA. The PDLLA (amorphous) blend shows comparable regions of phase separation with high molecular weight and semi‐crystalline PLLA blends even though the molecular weight is much lower. The blends of the shorter chain PLLA1 tend to show more crystalline regions. The optical transparency, miscibility, and crystallinity of the blends are not only affected by the stereo‐regularity and molecular weight of PLA but also the crystallizable PCL, especially at high loading. Blends of two biodegradable and semicrystalline polymers, poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(butylene succinate‐co‐adipate) (PBSA), were prepared by solvent casting in different compositions. The miscibility, morphology, and thermal behavior of the blends were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. PLLA was found to be immiscible with PBSA as evidenced by two independent glass transitions and biphasic melt. Nonisothermal crystallization measurements showed that fractionated crystallization behavior occurred when PBSA was dispersed as droplets, evidenced by multiple crystallization peaks at different supercooling levels. Crystallization and morphology of the blends were also investigated through two‐step isothermal crystallization. For blends where PLLA was the major component, different content of PBSA did not make a significant difference in the crystallization mechanism and rate of PLLA. For blends where PBSA was the major component, the crystallization rate of PBSA decreased with increasing PLLA content, while the crystallization mechanism did not change. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The miscibility, thermal behaviour, morphology and mechanical properties of poly[(R)‐3‐hydroxybutyrate] (PHB) with poly(γ‐benzyl‐L ‐glutamate) (PBLG) are investigated by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile tests. The DSC results show that PHB and PBLG are immiscible in the melt state. Such immiscibility also exists in the amorphous state due to a clear two‐phase separated structure observed by SEM measurements. The blend samples with different thermal history, namely as original and melt samples separately, display differences in thermal behaviour such as the DSC scan profile, the crystallinity and the melting temperature of PHB. The crystallization of PHB both from the molten state and the amorphous state is retarded on addition of the second component. The SEM measurements reveal that a phase inversion occurs between the PHB/PBLG (60/40) and PHB/PBLG (40/60) blends. Except for the PHB/PBLG (40/60) blend, a microphase separated structure is observed for all blend compositions. The mechanical properties vary considerably with blend composition. Compared with pure components, the PHB/PBLG (20/80) blend shows a certain improvement in mechanical properties. © 2001 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The effect of end groups (2NH2) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) on the miscibility and crystallization behaviors of binary crystalline blends of PEG/poly(L ‐lactic acid) (PLLA) were investigated. The results of conductivity meter and dielectric analyzer (DEA) implied the existence of ions, which could be explained by the amine groups of PEG gaining the protons from the carboxylic acid groups of PLLA. The miscibility of PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blends was the best because of the ionic interaction as compared with PEG(2OH, 1OH‐1CH3, and 2CH3)/PLLA blends. Since the ionic interaction formed only at the chain ends of PEG(2NH2) and PLLA, unlike hydrogen bonds forming at various sites along the chains in the other PEG/PLLA blend systems, the folding of PLLA blended with PEG(2NH2) was affected in a different manner. Thus the fold surface free energy played an important role on the crystallization rate of PLLA for the PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blend system. PLLA had the least fold surface free energy and the fast crystallization rate in the PEG(2NH2)/PLLA blend system, among all the PEG/PLLA systems studied. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(butylene succinate‐co‐L ‐lactate) (PBSL)–compatibilized poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) polymer blends with two commercial grades of polycarbonate (PC) were investigated. The capillary tests showed that the steady shear viscosity of high molecular weight PC (PC‐L) was 10 times higher than that of low molecular weight PC (PC‐AD) throughout the shear rate range under investigation. Morphologic examination revealed that the shape of the dispersed PC‐L phase in the as‐extruded blends was largely spherical, but the PC‐AD phase was more like a rod and elongated further during injection molding. Notched Izod impact strength (IS) of the unmodified PLLA/PC‐L blend was higher than that of PC‐AD blend. The IS of modified ternary blends increased with PBSL content because of enhanced phase interaction indicated from thermal and morphologic analysis. The PBSL modification also enhanced IS more significantly in PLLA/PC‐L than in PLLA/PC‐AD blends. On the contrary, the heat deflection temperature (HDT) of PLLA/PC‐L binary system was much lower than that of PLLA/PC‐AD. HDT of PBSL‐modified PLLA/PC‐AD blends dropped with increasing PBSL content, which is a ductile polymer. Thermal and dynamic mechanical analysis of the ternary blends showed that individual components were immiscible with distinct Tgs for PC and PLLA and distinct Tms for PBSL and PLLA. POLYM. ENG. Crystallization kinetics behavior and morphology of poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) blended with of 2–10 wt% loadings of poly(L ‐ and D ‐lactic acid) (PLLA and PDLA) stereocomplex crystallites, as biodegradable nucleating agents, were studied using differential scanning calorimetry, polarizing‐light optical microscopy (POM), and wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction (WAXD). Blending PLLA with PDLA at 1:1 weight ratio led to formation of stereocomplexed PLA (sc‐PLA), which was incorporated as small crystalline nuclei into PHB for investigating melt‐crystallization kinetics. The Avrami equation was used to analyze the isothermal crystallization of PHB. The stereocomplexed crystallites acted as nucleation sites in blends and accelerated the crystallization rates of PHB by increasing the crystallization rate constant k and decreasing the half‐time (t1/2). The PHB crystallization was nucleated most effectively with 10 wt% stereocomplexed crystallites, as evidenced byPOM results. The sc‐PLA complexes (nucleated PHB crystals) exhibit much small spherulite sizes but possess the same crystal cell morphology as that of neat PHB based on the WAXD result. POLYM. ENG. The crystallization kinetics and spherulitic morphology of six‐armed poly(L‐lactic acid) (6a‐PLLA)/poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate‐co?3‐hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) crystalline/crystalline partially miscible blends were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscopy in this study. Avrami analysis was used to describe the isothermal crystallization process of the neat polymers and their blends. The results suggest that blending had a complex influence on the crystallization rate of the two components during the isothermal crystallization process. Also, the crystallization mechanism of these blends was different from that of the neat polymers. The melting behavior of these blends was also studied after crystallization at various crystallization temperatures. The crystallization of PHBV at 125°C was difficult, so no melting peaks were found. However, it was interesting to find a weak melting peak, which arose from the PHBV component for the 20/80 6a‐PLLA/PHBV blend after crystallization at 125°C, and it is discussed in detail. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The morphology and miscibility of commercial poly(lactide) (PLA)/poly(β‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB, from 5 to 20 wt %) blends prepared by melt extrusion method, were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) observations. The results show that for all the studied blend contents, PLA/PHB blends are immiscible. The effects of PHB and talc on the nonisothermal cold crystallization kinetics of PLA were examined using a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) at different heating rates. PHB acted as a nucleating agent on PLA and the addition of talc to the blend yielded further improvement, since significant increase in the enthalpy peak was observed for samples containing 10 wt % PHB and talc (from 0.5 to 5 phr). The crystallization kinetics were then examined using the Avrami–Jeziorny and Liu–Mo approach. The simultaneous presence of PHB and talc induced a decrease of the crystallization half time. The evolution of activation energies determined with Kissinger's equation suggests that blending with PHB and incorporating talc promote nonisothermal cold crystallization of PLA. The miscibility of high molecular weight poly( -lactide) PLLA with high molecular weight poly(ethylene oxide) PEO was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. All blends containing up to 50 weight% PEO showed single glass transition temperatures. The PLLA and PEO melting temperatures were found to decrease on blending, the equilibrium melting points of PLLA in these blends decreased with increasing PEO fractions. These results suggest the miscibility of PLLA and PEO in the amorphous phase. Mechanical properties of blends with up to 20 weight% PEO were also studied. Changes in mechanical properties were small in blends with less than 10 weight% PEO. At higher PEO concentrations the materials became very flexible, an elongation at break of more than 500% was observed for a blend with 20 weight% PEO. Hydrolytic degradation up to 30 days of the blends showed only a small variation in tensile strength at PEO concentrations less than 15 weight%. As a result of the increased hydrophilicity, however, the blends swelled. Mass loss upon degradation was attributed to partial dissolution of the PEO fraction and to an increased rate of degradation of the PLLA fraction. Significant differences in degradation behaviour between PLLA/PEO blends and (PLLA/PEO/PLLA) triblock-copolymers were observed.  相似文献

Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc) was added to the crystalline blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) (40/60) of higher molecular weights, whereas diblock and triblock poly(ethylene glycol)–poly(L ‐lactide) copolymers were added to the same blend of moderate molecular weights. The crystallization rate of PLLA of the blend containing PVAc was reduced, as evidenced by X‐ray diffraction measurement. A ringed spherulite morphology of PLLA was observed in the PEO/PLLA/PVAc blend, attributed to the presence of twisted lamellae, and the morphology was affected by the amount of PVAc. A steady increase in the elongation at break in the solution blend with an increase in the PVAc content was observed. The melting behavior of PLLA and PEO in the PEO/PLLA/block copolymer blends was not greatly affected by the block copolymer, and the average size of the dispersed PEO domain was not significantly changed by the block copolymer. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biosourced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) blends with different content of poly(ethylene oxide‐b‐amide‐12) (PEBA) were prepared by melt compounding. The miscibility, phase structure, crystallization behavior, mechanical properties, and toughening mechanism were investigated. The blend was an immiscible system with the PEBA domains evenly dispersed in the PLA matrix. The PEBA component suppressed the nonisothermal melt crystallization of PLA. With the addition of PEBA, marked improvement in toughness of PLA was achieved. The maximum for elongation at break and impact strength of the blend reached the level of 346% and 60.5 kJ/m2, respectively. The phase morphology evolution in the PLA/PEBA blends after tensile and impact tests was investigated, and the corresponding toughening mechanism was discussed. It was found that the PLA matrix demonstrates obvious shear yielding in the blend during the tensile and impact tests, which induced energy dissipation and therefore lead to improvement in toughness of the PLA/PEBA blends. Blends of amorphous and crystalline polylactides (PDLA and PLLA) with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl acrylate) (PMA) have been prepared. Thermal behaviour and miscibility of these blends along the entire composition interval were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (d.s.c.). The results were compared with those obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis (DMTA). Only one Tg was found in PDLA/PMA and PDLA/PMMA blends, indicating a high degree of miscibility in both systems. Nevertheless, the PDLA/PMMA blend presented enlargements of the Tg width at high PMMA contents. In this case, additional evidence of complete miscibility was obtained by studying the evolution of the enthalpic recovery peaks which appear after different thermal annealing treatments. When the polylactide used was semicrystalline (PLLA), once the thermal history of the blends had been destroyed, crystallization of PLLA was disturbed in both blends PLLA/PMMA and PLLA/PMA, but in a rather different fashion: in the first case crystallization was almost prevented while in the second one it was favoured. This behaviour was explained in terms of the effect of the higher stiffness as indicated by the value of Tg for PMMA compared to that for PMA.  相似文献

Four blends of poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(butylene succinate) (PBSU), both biodegradable semicrystalline polyesters, were prepared with the ratio of PHB/PBSU ranging from 80/20 to 20/80 by co-dissolving the two polyesters in N,N-dimethylformamide and casting the mixture. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and optical microscopy (OM) were used to probe the miscibility of PHB/PBSU blends. Experimental results indicated that PHB showed some limited miscibility with PBSU for PHB/PBSU 20/80 blend as evidenced by the small change in the glass transition temperature and the depression of the equilibrium melting point temperature of the high melting point component PHB. However, PHB showed immiscibility with PBSU for the other three blends as shown by the existence of unchanged composition independent glass transition temperature and the biphasic melt. Nonisothermal crystallization of PHB/PBSU blends was investigated by DSC using various cooling rates from 2.5 to 10 °C/min. During the nonisothermal crystallization, despite the cooling rates used two crystallization peak temperatures were found for PHB/PBSU 40/60 and 60/40 blends, corresponding to the crystallization of PHB and PBSU, respectively, whereas only one crystallization peak temperature was observed for PHB/PBSU 80/20 and 20/80 blends. However, it was found that after the nonisothermal crystallization the crystals of PHB and PBSU actually co-existed in PHB/PBSU 80/20 and 20/80 blends from the two melting endotherms observed in the subsequent DSC melting traces, corresponding to the melting of PHB and PBSU crystals, respectively. The subsequent melting behavior was also studied after the nonisothermal crystallization. In some cases, double melting behavior was found for both PHB and PBSU, which was influenced by the cooling rates used and the blend composition.  相似文献

Biodegradable polymer blends of high-molecular-weight poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) are not miscible in general. Yet, by decreasing the molecular weight of PHB, the low-molecular-weight PHB could have improved miscibility with the PLA. In this study, a melt-induced degradation process of PLA/PHB blends was therefore implemented, termed the in-situ self-compatibilization approach, to produce low-molecular-weight PHB during melt blending process. The solution blends of PLA and oligomer PHB (PLA/OPHB) were also prepared as a basis to understand the role of low-molecular-weight PHB to improve its miscibility with PLA in PLA/PHB blends. Only one single glass transition temperature (Tg) was found for the resulting PLA/PHB blends at compositions of 95/05 to 80/20, proving that the miscibility was greatly improved by decreasing molecular weight of PHB. Because the degraded PHB had a relatively lower Tg, it thus provided plasticization effect to the PLA and resulted in the decreased crystallization temperature. Moreover, with increasing PHB content to 20% in the blend, the elongation at break increased significantly from 7.2% to 227%, more than 30-fold. The extensive shear yielding and necking behavior were observed during tensile testing for the blend of 80/20. The localized plasticization within PLA/PHB matrix with the reduction of local yield stress and the well-dispersed PHB crystallites were the major contributing factors to trigger shear yielding phenomenon. Moreover, initial modulus decreased only 20%, from 1.68 to 1.35 GPa. A common problem of severely reduced stiffness from the added plasticizer encountered in the plasticized PLA blends was therefore not perceived here.  相似文献

Blends of cellulose acetate (CA) and poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) were prepared by the solvent‐casting method in both the presence and the absence of a compatibilizer agent. The compatibilizer was synthesized by reactive processing between CA and PHB. From the differential scanning calorimetric analysis, it has been identified that CA/PHB blends are immiscible in the range of PHB content studied. The existence of interactions between the components was observed due to the displacement of glass transition temperature relative to PHB phase in the blend. The grafting copolymer promoted the increase of interactions between the phases specifically to compatibilized CA/40%wtPHB blend. This composition shows significant changes in crystalline percentage compared to the uncompatibilized blend. The existence of phase interactions modified the viscoelastic behavior of the compatibilized blends by introducing changes in the chain segment mobility due to the addition of compatibilizer as the dynamic mechanical analysis has pointed out. It was observed that different of the blends with lower PHB content, CA/40%wtPHB compatibilized blend with same compatibilizer content did not reach PHB saturation. This difference in behavior can be attributed to the fact that the content of compatibilizer agent used was the proper amount to promote both PHB domain size reduction and dispersion. POLYM. ENG. The miscibility and crystallization behavior of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride) ionomer (SMAI) blends were studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This study has demonstrated that the presence of ion–dipole interactions enhances the miscibility of otherwise immiscible polymers in the PEO and high molecular weight poly(styrene‐co‐maleic anhydride) (SMA). The effect of ion–dipole interactions on enhancing miscibility is confirmed by the presence of a single glass transition temperature (Tg) and a depression of the equilibrium melting temperature of the PEO component. The equilibrium melting temperature of PEO in the blends are obtained using Hoffman‐Weeks plots. The interaction energy density, β, is calculated from these data using the Nishi‐Wang equation. Two series of biodegradable polymer blends were prepared from combinations of poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA) with poly(?‐caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(butylene succinate‐co‐L ‐lactate) (PBSL) in proportions of 100/0, 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30 (based on the weight percentage). Their mechanical properties were investigated and related to their morphologies. The thermal properties, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and melt flow index analysis of the binary blends and virgin polymers were then evaluated. The addition of PCL and PBSL to PLLA reduced the tensile strength and Young's modulus, whereas the elongation at break and melt flow index increased. The stress–strain curve showed that the blending of PLLA with ductile PCL and PBSL improved the toughness and increased the thermal stability of the blended polymers. A morphological analysis of the PLLA and the PLLA blends revealed that all the PLLA/PCL and PLLA/PBSL blends were immiscible with the PCL and PBSL phases finely dispersed in the PLLA‐rich phase. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
