In recent decades, psychologists have been actively involved in the development and evaluation of parenting programs and are now turning their attention to the implementation of these evidence-based programs in real-world contexts. In the current study, we examined administrators' reasons for adopting an evidence-based parenting program and service providers' use of and adherence to this program in community agencies. Surveys were completed online by 63 administrators and 215 service providers from 69 different agencies. Although the majority of trained service providers used the program, a significant minority (25.6%) had not delivered it since completing training. The average adherence rate reported by the service providers who used the program was 85.9%; the most common explanations provided for omitting session objectives were that they did not have enough time in session and because they did not consider the activities relevant for the parents they were seeing. Implications and suggestions for psychologists involved in the implementation of parenting programs are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2011 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Surveyed American Psychological Association-approved doctoral and internship programs in clinical and counseling psychology regarding training opportunities in medical psychology. 42 graduate and 65 internship programs responded. Results indicate that the majority of both types of programs offered didactic and experiential training, including diagnostic and therapeutic activities with a wide variety of medical/surgical patients. There appears to be a sufficient number of faculty psychologists with special interest and/or expertise in this area to adequately prepare new psychologists for employment in medical centers and other types of medical settings. The American Psychological Association Committee on Accreditation has approved for doctoral training in professional psychology the predoctoral internships offered by the agencies listed below. The criteria for evaluating these programs can be obtained from the Accreditation Office. The current criteria for accreditation of predoctoral internship training programs no longer make the distinction between clinical and counseling internship programs; therefore, the separate listing of approved programs by professional specialty has been dropped. Readers desiring information on training goals offered at specific agencies are encouraged to write directly to the agencies. Each of the agencies listed has met the same qualitative standards with respect to adequacy of training. The enclosed list is alphabetical by agencies. Surveyed 65 VA hospitals as to the status, roles, and responsibilities of doctoral level counseling psychologists. Results suggest a declining image of the discipline as a visible entity, with large numbers of counseling psychologists defecting to become clinical psychologists. Bias operating against counseling psychologists in the areas of hiring, promotional opportunity, and duty assignments was reported by some chiefs. Counseling psychologists fare comparatively well in being named to administrative positions in the VA. Criticism of counseling psychology is not directed at American Psychological Association-approved programs but rather at programs associated more closely with schools of education. Such programs are seen as producing "easier" degrees and practitioners not primarily identified with psychology. (22 ref) (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The current study examines the extent to which American Psychological Association accredited clinical and counseling doctoral programs incorporate training on issues relevant to gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) clients. One hundred four training directors completed surveys. Results reveal the 1st snapshot of how doctoral programs are addressing GLB issues in existing curricula. For example, programs are incorporating GLB issues in multicultural classes and practicum. However, counseling programs incorporated GLB issues more than clinical programs in several areas, such as requiring multicultural courses (where GLB issues are potentially addressed) and mentoring students in GLB research. Differences in levels of inclusion between clinical and counseling programs could be attributable to the programs' differential emphases on subspecialization. The Committee on Accreditation has approved the doctoral training programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology that are conducted by the institutions listed in this article. In the institutions listed, the approved programs are directed by the department of psychology unless otherwise indicated. Programs that have not requested evaluation, and programs that have been evaluated but not approved, are not included in the list. Inclusion of an institution in this list indicates approval of doctoral programs in clinical, counseling, school, and combined professional-scientific psychology. Combined professional-scientific psychology is a new area of accreditation for programs that do not clearly fit the model for separate programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology. This area of accreditation is defined as a combination of clinical, counseling, and/or school psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Suggests that employment settings are related to SES trends and discusses their combined impact on the training of counseling psychologists (CPs). Some training models are described, and doctoral programs are reviewed in terms of history, setting, and training emphases. Certification and licensing issues are considered, along with related issues such as retraining. The ever-changing identity of counseling psychology is presented as an obstacle to reaching a consensus as to what constitutes appropriate training for CPs. Data obtained from 70 vocational rehabilitation agencies reveal that the most frequent service psychologists rendered was routine assessment of clients; psychologists were described also as performing a wide variety of training, research, administrative, and treatment services. Data are interpreted as showing a need for additional rehabilitation psychology training programs if contributions of this specialty are to be implemented and future needs of personnel are to be met.
