Topology control plays an important role in the design of wireless ad hoc and sensor networks and has demonstrated its high capability in constructing networks with desirable characteristics such as sparser connectivity, lower transmission power, and smaller node degree. However, the enforcement of a topology control algorithm in a network may degrade the energy‐draining balancing capability of the network and thus reduce the network operational lifetime. For this reason, it is important to take into account energy efficiency in the design of a topology control algorithm in order to achieve prolonged network lifetime. In this paper, we propose a localized energy‐efficient topology control algorithm for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks with power control capability in network nodes. To achieve prolonged network lifetime, we introduce a concept called energy criticality avoidance and propose an energy criticality avoidance strategy in topology control and energy‐efficient routing. Through theoretical analysis and simulation results, we prove that the proposed topology control algorithm can maintain the global network connectivity with low complexity and can significantly prolong the lifetime of a multi‐hop wireless network as compared with existing topology control algorithms with little additional protocol overhead. Balancing the load among sensor nodes is a major challenge for the long run operation of wireless sensor networks. When a sensor node becomes overloaded, the likelihood of higher latency, energy loss, and congestion becomes high. In this paper, we propose an optimal load balanced clustering for hierarchical cluster‐based wireless sensor networks. We formulate the network design problem as mixed‐integer linear programming. Our contribution is 3‐fold: First, we propose an energy aware cluster head selection model for optimal cluster head selection. Then we propose a delay and energy‐aware routing model for optimal inter‐cluster communication. Finally, we propose an equal traffic for energy efficient clustering for optimal load balanced clustering. We consider the worst case scenario, where all nodes have the same capability and where there are no ways to use mobile sinks or add some powerful nodes as gateways. Thus, our models perform load balancing and maximize network lifetime with no need for special node capabilities such as mobility or heterogeneity or pre‐deployment, which would greatly simplify the problem. We show that the proposed models not only increase network lifetime but also minimize latency between sensor nodes. Numerical results show that energy consumption can be effectively balanced among sensor nodes, and stability period can be greatly extended using our models.  相似文献

Data/content dissemination among the mobile devices is the fundamental building block for all the applications in wireless mobile collaborative computing, known as mobile peer‐to‐peer. Different parameters such as node density, scheduling among neighboring nodes, mobility pattern, and node speed have a tremendous impact on data diffusion in a mobile peer‐to‐peer environment. In this paper, we develop analytical models for object diffusion time/delay in a wireless mobile network to apprehend the complex interrelationship among these different parameters. In the analysis, we calculate the probabilities of transmitting a single object from one node to multiple nodes using the epidemic model of spread of disease. We also incorporate the impact of node mobility, radio range, and node density in the networks into the analysis. Utilizing these transition probabilities, we estimate the expected delay for diffusing an object to the entire network both for single object and multiple object scenarios. We then calculate the transmission probabilities of multiple objects among the nodes in the wireless mobile network considering network dynamics. Through extensive simulations, we demonstrate that the proposed scheme is efficient for data diffusion in the wireless mobile network.

An ad hoc network is a collection of nodes that do not need to rely on a predefined infrastructure to keep the network connected. Nodes communicate amongst each other using wireless radios and operate by following a peer‐to‐peer network model. In this article, we propose a multifold node authentication approach for protecting mobile ad hoc networks. The security requirements for protecting data link and network layers are identified and the design criteria for creating secure ad hoc networks using multiple authentication protocols are analysed. Such protocols, which are based on zero‐knowledge and challenge‐response techniques, are presented through proofs and simulation results. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the reliable broadcast and multicast lifetime maximization problems in energy‐constrained wireless ad hoc networks, such as wireless sensor networks for environment monitoring and wireless ad hoc networks consisting of laptops or PDAs with limited battery capacities. In packet loss‐free networks, the optimal solution of lifetime maximization problem can be easily obtained by tree‐based algorithms. In unreliable networks, we formulate them as min–max tree problems and prove them NP‐complete by a reduction from a well‐known minimum degree spanning tree problem. A link quality‐aware heuristic algorithm called Maximum Lifetime Reliable Broadcast Tree (MLRBT) is proposed to build a broadcast tree that maximizes the network lifetime. The reliable multicast lifetime maximization problem can be solved as well by pruning the broadcast tree produced by the MLRBT algorithm. The time complexity analysis of both algorithms is also provided. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithms can significantly increase the network lifetime compared with the traditional algorithms under various distributions of error probability on lossy wireless links. In large‐scale wireless sensor networks, cost‐effective and energy‐efficient localization of sensor nodes is an important research topic. In spite of their coarse accuracy, range‐free (connectivity‐based) localization methods are considered as cost‐effective alternatives to the range‐based localization schemes with specialized hardware requirements. In this paper, we derive closed‐form expressions for the average minimum transmit powers required for the localization of sensor nodes, under deterministic path loss, log‐normal shadowing, and Rayleigh fading channel models. The impacts of propagation environment and spatial density of anchor nodes on the minimum transmit power for node localization are evaluated analytically as well as through simulations. Knowledge of the minimum transmit power requirements for localizability of a sensor node enables improving energy efficiency and prolonging lifetime of the network. We also propose a novel distance metric for range‐free localization in large‐scale sensor networks. The target and anchor nodes are assumed to be positioned according to two statistically independent two‐dimensional homogeneous Poisson point processes. Analytical expression for the average distance from a target node to its kth nearest neighbor anchor node is derived and is used for estimating the target‐to‐anchor node distances for localization. The Cramér–Rao lower bound on the localization accuracy for the new distance estimator is derived. Simulation results show the accuracy of the proposed distance estimate compared with some existing ones for range‐free localization. The results of our investigation are significant for low‐cost, energy‐efficient localization of wireless sensor nodes. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Nodes in mobile ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are characterized by their limited resources. Hence, the concept of clustering was introduced to allow spacial reuse of bandwidth and to minimize routing overhead. However, node mobility perturbs the stability of the network and affects the performance of other protocols such as scheduling, routing, and resource allocation, which makes re‐clustering the network to maintain up‐to‐date information at each node unavoidable. Consequently, clustering models for MANETS should be carefully designed while taking into consideration the fact that mobile nodes are energy constrained. In this paper, we propose a dynamic energy‐efficient clustering algorithm that prolongs the network lifetime by electing cluster‐heads taking into consideration, in addition to other parameters such as mobility, their residual energies and making them dynamically monitor their energy consumption to either diminish the number of their cluster‐members or relinquish their roles. We have evaluated the performance of the proposed clustering model and compared it with other related clustering approaches found in the literature. Obtained results show the efficiency of the proposed algorithm. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can help the realization of low-cost power grid automation systems where multi-functional sensor nodes can be used to monitor the critical parameters of smart grid components. The WSN-based smart grid applications include but not limited to load control, power system monitoring and control, fault diagnostics, power fraud detection, demand response, and distribution automation. However, the design and implementation of WSNs are constrained by energy resources. Sensor nodes have limited battery energy supply and accordingly, power aware communication protocols have been developed in order to address the energy consumption and prolong their lifetime. In this paper, the lifetime of wireless sensor nodes has been analyzed under different smart grid radio propagation environments, such as 500 kV substation, main power control room, and underground network transformer vaults. In particular, the effects of smart grid channel characteristics and radio parameters, such as path loss, shadowing, frame length and distance, on a wireless sensor node lifetime have been evaluated. Overall, the main objective of this paper is to help network designers quantifying the impact of the smart grid propagation environment and sensor radio characteristics on node lifetime in harsh smart grid environments.  相似文献

The node throughput, which is defined as the total rate received at each node, is evaluated for the interference limited TDMA and TDMA/CDMA wireless ad hoc networks. In the TDMA wireless ad hoc network, there is only one transmission link connected to each node in the same time slot, whereas in the TDMA/CDMA wireless ad hoc network there are multiple transmission links connected to each node in the same time slot. We first derive the node throughput for these two wireless ad hoc networks and then make a comparison of the node throughput between them. The theoretical results and simulation results both reveal that the TDMA wireless ad hoc network outperforms the TDMA/CDMA wireless ad hoc network in the node throughput. This paper presents Span, a power saving technique for multi-hop ad hoc wireless networks that reduces energy consumption without significantly diminishing the capacity or connectivity of the network. Span builds on the observation that when a region of a shared-channel wireless network has a sufficient density of nodes, only a small number of them need be on at any time to forward traffic for active connections. Span is a distributed, randomized algorithm where nodes make local decisions on whether to sleep, or to join a forwarding backbone as a coordinator. Each node bases its decision on an estimate of how many of its neighbors will benefit from it being awake, and the amount of energy available to it. We give a randomized algorithm where coordinators rotate with time, demonstrating how localized node decisions lead to a connected, capacity-preserving global topology. Improvement in system lifetime due to Span increases as the ratio of idle-to-sleep energy consumption increases. Our simulations show that with a practical energy model, system lifetime of an 802.11 network in power saving mode with Span is a factor of two better than without. Additionally, Span also improves communication latency and capacity.  相似文献

In this paper, we address the problem of broadcast routing in mobile ad hoc networks from the viewpoint of energy efficiency. In an ad hoc wireless network, each node runs on a local energy source which has a limited energy lifespan. Thus, energy conservation is a critical issue in ad hoc networks. One approach for energy conservation is to establish routes which require lowest total energy consumption. This optimization problem is referred as the minimum‐energy broadcast routing problem (MEBRP). In this paper, we propose new efficient algorithms for the construction of energy‐efficient trees for broadcast in mobile ad hoc networks. These algorithms exploit the broadcast nature of the wireless channel, and address the need for energy‐efficient operations. Empirical studies show that our algorithms are able to achieve better performance than algorithms that have been developed for MEBRP. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The reduction of energy consumption in order to increase network lifetime is one of the most major challenges in the design of wireless sensor networks. During data dissemination, the sensors that are located in the sink's neighborhood are responsible to relay data to the other nodes; hence, their energy is exhausted expeditiously. Therefore, the idea of utilizing mobile sinks can be so advantageous to decrease energy consumption during data dissemination process. In this paper, we propose self‐managed grid‐based data disseminating protocol for mobile sink in wireless sensor networks by using the idea of constructing a virtual grid. In self‐managed grid‐based data disseminating protocol, sink and nodes map their geographical position to a virtual location. In order to increase the performance, we have employed a cell head for each grid cell. Cell heads are selected based on two parameters, centralization and residual energy. Our data dissemination protocol is simple and has low overhead to construct and maintain. Also, we have presented a new method for sink location update, which leads to the least cost in data transfer. Simulation results illustrate that by utilizing hierarchical functionality and determining an optimal size for grid cells, energy consumption is decreased, which leads to increasing network lifetime. In wireless sensor network, a large number of sensor nodes are distributed to cover a certain area. Sensor node is little in size with restricted processing power, memory, and limited battery life. Because of restricted battery power, wireless sensor network needs to broaden the system lifetime by reducing the energy consumption. A clustering‐based protocols adapt the use of energy by giving a balance to all nodes to become a cluster head. In this paper, we concentrate on a recent hierarchical routing protocols, which are depending on LEACH protocol to enhance its performance and increase the lifetime of wireless sensor network. So our enhanced protocol called Node Ranked–LEACH is proposed. Our proposed protocol improves the total network lifetime based on node rank algorithm. Node rank algorithm depends on both path cost and number of links between nodes to select the cluster head of each cluster. This enhancement reflects the real weight of specific node to success and can be represented as a cluster head. The proposed algorithm overcomes the random process selection, which leads to unexpected fail for some cluster heads in other LEACH versions, and it gives a good performance in the network lifetime and energy consumption comparing with previous version of LEACH protocols.  相似文献

Underwater wireless sensor network (UWSN) is a network made up of underwater sensor nodes, anchor nodes, surface sink nodes or surface stations, and the offshore sink node. Energy consumption, limited bandwidth, propagation delay, high bit error rate, stability, scalability, and network lifetime are the key challenges related to underwater wireless sensor networks. Clustering is used to mitigate these issues. In this work, fuzzy-based unequal clustering protocol (FBUCP) is proposed that does cluster head selection using fuzzy logic as it can deal with the uncertainties of the harsh atmosphere in the water. Cluster heads are selected using linguistic input variables like distance to the surface sink node, residual energy, and node density and linguistic output variables like cluster head advertisement radius and rank of underwater sensor nodes. Unequal clustering is used to have an unequal size of the cluster which deals with the problem of excess energy usage of the underwater sensor nodes near the surface sink node, called the hot spot problem. Data gathered by the cluster heads are transmitted to the surface sink node using neighboring cluster heads in the direction of the surface sink node. Dijkstra's shortest path algorithm is used for multi-hop and inter-cluster routing. The FBUCP is compared with the LEACH-UWSN, CDBR, and FBCA protocols for underwater wireless sensor networks. A comparative analysis shows that in first node dies, the FBUCP is up to 80% better, has 64.86% more network lifetime, has 91% more number of packets transmitted to the surface sink node, and is up to 58.81% more energy efficient than LEACH-UWSN, CDBR, and FBCA.  相似文献

In energy‐constrained military wireless sensor networks, minimizing the bit error rate (BER) with little compromise on network lifetime is one of the most challenging issues. This paper presents a new relay selection based on fuzzy logic (RSFL) scheme which provides balance between these parameters. The proposed scheme considers node's residual energy and path loss of the relay‐destination link as the input parameters for the selection of the relay node. The relay node selection by fuzzy logic is based on prioritizing higher residual energy and minimum path loss. To evaluate the performance on wireless sensor network, we compare the proposed scheme with the three existing relay selection strategies, ie, random, maximum residual energy based relay selection (MaxRes), and minimum energy consumption based relay selection (MinEnCon). The simulation results of the proposed scheme in terms of network lifetime, BER, Network Survivability Index (NSI), and average energy of network nodes have been presented and compared with different relay selection schemes. The simulation results show that the proposed RSFL scheme has the lowest BER, moderate network lifetime, average energy, and NSI.  相似文献

A mobile ad hoc network (MANET) is a self‐organized and adaptive wireless network formed by dynamically gathering mobile nodes. Since the topology of the network is constantly changing, the issue of routing packets and energy conservation become challenging tasks. In this paper, we propose a cross‐layer design that jointly considers routing and topology control taking mobility and interference into account for MANETs. We called the proposed protocol as Mobility‐aware Routing and Interference‐aware Topology control (MRIT) protocol. The main objective of the proposed protocol is to increase the network lifetime, reduce energy consumption, and find stable end‐to‐end routes for MANETs. We evaluate the performance of the proposed protocol by comprehensively simulating a set of random MANET environments. The results show that the proposed protocol reduces energy consumption rate, end‐to‐end delay, interference while preserving throughput and network connectivity. Random waypoint (RWP) mobility model is widely used in ad hoc network simulation. The model suffers from speed decay as the simulation progresses and may not reach the steady state in terms of instantaneous average node speed. Furthermore, the convergence of the average speed to its steady state value is delayed. This usually leads to inaccurate results in protocol validation of mobile ad hoc networks modeling. Moreover, the probability distributions of speed vary over the simulation time, such that the node speed distribution at the initial state is different from the corresponding distribution at the end of the simulation. In order to overcome these problems, this paper proposes a modified RWP mobility model with a more precise distribution of the nodes' speed. In the modified model, the speeds of nodes are sampled from gamma distribution. The results obtained from both analysis and simulation experiments of the average speed and the density of nodes' speed indicate that the proposed gamma random waypoint mobility model outperforms the existing RWP mobility models. It is shown that a significant performance improvement in achieving higher steady state speed values that closely model the pre‐assumed average speeds are possible with the proposed model. Additionally, the model allows faster convergence to the steady state, and probability distribution of speed is steady over the simulation time. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Overlapping is one of the topics in wireless sensor networks that is considered by researchers in the last decades. An appropriate overlapping management system can prolong network lifetime and decrease network recovery time. This paper proposes an intelligent and knowledge‐based overlapping clustering protocol for wireless sensor networks, called IKOCP. This protocol uses some of the intelligent and knowledge‐based systems to construct a robust overlapping strategy for sensor networks. The overall network is partitioned to several regions by a proposed multicriteria decision‐making controller to monitor both small‐scale and large‐scale areas. Each region is managed by a sink, where the whole network is managed by a base station. The sensor nodes are categorized by various clusters using the low‐energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH)‐improved protocol in a way that the value of p is defined by a proposed support vector machine–based mechanism. A proposed fuzzy system determines that noncluster heads associate with several clusters in order to manage overlapping conditions over the network. Cluster heads are changed into clusters in a period by a suggested utility function. Since network lifetime should be prolonged and network traffic should be alleviated, a data aggregation mechanism is proposed to transmit only crucial data packets from cluster heads to sinks. Cluster heads apply a weighted criteria matrix to perform an inner‐cluster routing for transmitting data packets to sinks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed protocol surpasses the existing methods in terms of the number of alive nodes, network lifetime, average time to recover, dead time of first node, and dead time of last node.  相似文献
