A method to acquire multiple displacement encoded slices within a single breath hold is presented. Efficiency is improved over conventional DENSE without compromising image quality by readout of multiple slices in the same cardiac cycle, thus utilizing the position‐encoded stimulated echo available in the whole heart. The method was evaluated by comparing strain values obtained using the proposed method to strain values obtained by conventional separate breath‐hold single‐slice DENSE acquisitions. Good agreement (Lagrangian E2 strain bias = 0.000, 95% limits of agreement ± 0.04, root‐mean‐square‐difference 0.02 [9.4% of mean end‐systolic E2]) was found between the methods, indicating that the proposed method can replace a multiple breath‐hold acquisition. Eliminating the need for multiple breath holds reduces the risk of changes in breath‐hold positions or heart rate, results in higher patient comfort, and facilitates inclusion of DENSE in a clinical routine protocol. Spin‐echo‐based acquisitions are the workhorse of clinical MRI because they provide a variety of useful image contrasts and are resistant to image artifacts from radio‐frequency or static field inhomogeneity. Three‐dimensional (3D) acquisitions provide datasets that can be retrospectively reformatted for viewing in freely selectable orientations, and are thus advantageous for evaluating the complex anatomy associated with many clinical applications of MRI. Historically, however, 3D spin‐echo‐based acquisitions have not played a significant role in clinical MRI due to unacceptably long acquisition times or image artifacts associated with details of the acquisition method. Recently, optimized forms of 3D fast/turbo spin‐echo imaging have become available from several MR‐equipment manufacturers (for example, CUBE [GE], SPACE [Siemens], and VISTA [Philips]). Through specific design strategies and optimization, including short non–spatially selective radio‐frequency pulses to significantly shorten the echo spacing and variable flip angles for the refocusing radio‐frequency pulses to suppress blurring or considerably lengthen the useable duration of the spin‐echo train, these techniques permit single‐slab 3D imaging of sizeable volumes in clinically acceptable acquisition times. These optimized fast/turbo spin‐echo pulse sequences provide a robust and flexible approach for 3D spin‐echo‐based imaging with a broad range of clinical applications. J. Magn. Reson. Purpose:

To demonstrate the feasibility of two‐dimensional selective radio frequency (2DRF) excitations for fast‐spin‐echo imaging of inner fields‐of‐view (FOVs) in order to shorten acquisitions times, decrease RF energy deposition, and reduce image blurring.

Materials and Methods:

Fast‐spin‐echo images (in‐plane resolution 1.0 × 1.0 mm2 or 0.5 × 1.0 mm2) of inner FOVs (40 mm, 16 mm oversampling) were obtained in phantoms and healthy volunteers on a 3 T whole‐body MR system using blipped‐planar 2DRF excitations.

Results:

Positioning the unwanted side excitations in the blind spot between the image section and the slice stack to measure yields minimum 2DRF pulse durations (about 6 msec) that are compatible with typical echo spacings of fast‐spin‐echo acquisitions. For the inner FOVs, the number of echoes and refocusing RF pulses is considerably reduced which compared to a full FOV (182 mm) reduces the RF energy deposition by about a factor of three and shortens the acquisition time, e.g., from 39 seconds to 12 seconds for a turbo factor of 15 or from 900 msec to 280 msec for a single‐shot acquisition, respectively. Furthermore, image blurring occurring for high turbo factors as in single‐shot acquisitions is considerably reduced yielding effectively higher in‐plane resolutions.

Conclusion:

Inner‐FOV acquisitions using 2DRF excitations may help to shorten acquisitions times, ameliorate image blurring, and reduce specific absorption rate (SAR) limitations of fast‐spin‐echo (FSE) imaging, in particular at higher static magnetic fields. Purpose:

To minimize image artifacts in long TR cardiac phase‐resolved steady state free precession (SSFP) based blood‐oxygen‐level‐dependent (BOLD) imaging.

Materials and Methods:

Nine healthy dogs (four male, five female, 20–25 kg) were studied in a clinical 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner to investigate the effect of temporal resolution, readout bandwidth, and motion compensation on long repetition time (TR) SSFP images. Breath‐held 2D SSFP cine sequences with various temporal resolutions (10–204 ms), bandwidths (239–930 Hz/pixel), with and without first‐order motion compensation were prescribed in the basal, mid‐ventricular, and apical along the short axis. Preliminary myocardial BOLD studies in dogs with controllable coronary stenosis were performed to assess the benefits of artifact‐reduction strategies.

Results:

Shortening the readout time by means of increasing readout bandwidth had no observable reduction in image artifacts. However, increasing the temporal resolution in the presence of first‐order motion compensation led to significant reduction in image artifacts. Preliminary studies demonstrated that BOLD signal changes can be reliably detected throughout the cardiac cycle.

Conclusion:

Artifact‐reduction methods used in this study provide significant improvement in image quality compared with conventional long TR SSFP BOLD MRI. It is envisioned that the methods proposed here may enable reliable detection of myocardial oxygenation changes throughout the cardiac cycle with long TR SSFP‐based myocardial BOLD MRI. J. Magn. Parallel imaging reconstructions result in spatially varying noise amplification characterized by the g‐factor, precluding conventional measurements of noise from the final image. A simple Monte Carlo based method is proposed for all linear image reconstruction algorithms, which allows measurement of signal‐to‐noise ratio and g‐factor and is demonstrated for SENSE and GRAPPA reconstructions for accelerated acquisitions that have not previously been amenable to such assessment. Only a simple “prescan” measurement of noise amplitude and correlation in the phased‐array receiver, and a single accelerated image acquisition are required, allowing robust assessment of signal‐to‐noise ratio and g‐factor. The “pseudo multiple replica” method has been rigorously validated in phantoms and in vivo, showing excellent agreement with true multiple replica and analytical methods. This method is universally applicable to the parallel imaging reconstruction techniques used in clinical applications and will allow pixel‐by‐pixel image noise measurements for all parallel imaging strategies, allowing quantitative comparison between arbitrary k‐space trajectories, image reconstruction, or noise conditioning techniques. Readout segmentation (RS‐EPI) has been suggested as a promising variant to echo‐planar imaging (EPI) for high‐resolution imaging, particularly when combined with parallel imaging. This work details some of the technical aspects of diffusion‐weighted (DW)‐RS‐EPI, outlining a set of reconstruction methods and imaging parameters that can both minimize the scan time and afford high‐resolution diffusion imaging with reduced distortions. These methods include an efficient generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisition (GRAPPA) calibration for DW‐RS‐EPI data without scan time penalty, together with a variant for the phase correction of partial Fourier RS‐EPI data. In addition, the role of pulsatile and rigid‐body brain motion in DW‐RS‐EPI was assessed. Corrupt DW‐RS‐EPI data arising from pulsatile nonlinear brain motion had a prevalence of ~7% and were robustly identified via k‐space entropy metrics. For DW‐RS‐EPI data corrupted by rigid‐body motion, we showed that no blind overlap was required. The robustness of RS‐EPI toward phase errors and motion, together with its minimized distortions compared with EPI, enables the acquisition of exquisite 3 T DW images with matrix sizes close to 5122. The potential signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR) gain at ultrahigh field strengths offers the promise of higher image resolution in single‐shot diffusion‐weighted echo‐planar imaging the challenge being reduced T2 and T2* relaxation times and increased B0 inhomogeneity which lead to geometric distortions and image blurring. These can be addressed using parallel imaging (PI) methods for which a greater range of feasible reduction factors has been predicted at ultrahigh field strengths—the tradeoff being an associated SNR loss. Using comprehensive simulations, the SNR of high‐resolution diffusion‐weighted echo‐planar imaging in combination with spin‐echo and stimulated‐echo acquisition is explored at 7 T and compared to 3 T. To this end, PI performance is simulated for coil arrays with a variable number of circular coil elements. Beyond that, simulations of the point spread function are performed to investigate the actual image resolution. When higher PI reduction factors are applied at 7 T to address increased image distortions, high‐resolution imaging benefits SNR‐wise only at relatively low PI reduction factors. On the contrary, it features generally higher image resolutions than at 3 T due to smaller point spread functions. The SNR simulations are confirmed by phantom experiments. Finally, high‐resolution in vivo images of a healthy volunteer are presented which demonstrate the feasibility of higher PI reduction factors at 7 T in practice. The purpose of this study was to combine a recently introduced spatiotemporal parallel imaging technique, PEAK‐GRAPPA (parallel MRI with extended and averaged generalized autocalibrating partially parallel acquisition), with two‐dimensional (2D) cine phase‐contrast velocity mapping. Phase‐contrast MRI was applied to measure the blood flow in the thoracic aorta and the myocardial motion of the left ventricle. To evaluate the performance of different reconstruction methods, fully acquired k‐space data sets were used to compare conventional parallel imaging using GRAPPA with reduction factors of R = 2–6 and PEAK‐GRAPPA as well as sliding window reconstruction with reduction factors R = 2–12 (net acceleration factors up to 5.2). PEAK‐GRAPPA reconstruction resulted in improved image quality with considerably reduced artifacts, which was also supported by error analysis. To analyze potential blurring or low‐pass filtering effects of spatiotemporal PEAK‐GRAPPA, the velocity time courses of aortic flow and myocardial tissue motion were evaluated and compared with conventional image reconstructions. Quantitative comparisons of blood flow velocities and pixel‐wise correlation analysis of velocities highlight the potential of PEAK‐GRAPPA for highly accelerated dynamic phase‐contrast velocity mapping. Purpose:

To compare the diagnostic accuracy of superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO)‐enhanced fluid‐attenuated inversion‐recovery echo‐planar imaging (FLAIR EPI) for malignant liver tumors with that of T2‐weighted turbo spin‐echo (TSE), T2*‐weighted gradient‐echo (GRE), and diffusion‐weighted echo‐planar imaging (DW EPI).

Materials and Methods:

SPIO‐enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that included FLAIR EPI, T2‐weighted TSE, T2*‐weighted GRE, and DW EPI sequences was performed using a 3 T system in 54 consecutive patients who underwent surgical exploration with intraoperative ultrasonography. A total of 88 malignant liver tumors were evaluated. Images were reviewed independently by two blinded observers who used a 5‐point confidence scale to identify lesions. Results were correlated with results of histopathologic findings and surgical exploration with intraoperative ultrasonography. The accuracy of each MRI sequence was measured with jackknife alternative free‐response receiver operating characteristic analysis. The sensitivity of each observer with each MRI sequence was compared with McNemar's test.

Results:

Accuracy values were significantly higher with FLAIR EPI sequence (0.93) than with T2*‐weighted GRE (0.80) or DW EPI sequences (0.80) (P < 0.05). Sensitivity was significantly higher with the FLAIR EPI sequence than with any of the other sequences.

Conclusion:

SPIO‐enhanced FLAIR EPI sequence was more accurate in the diagnosis of malignant liver tumors than T2*‐weighted GRE and DW EPI sequences. SPIO‐enhanced FLAIR EPI sequence is helpful for the detection of malignant liver tumors. J. Magn. Reson. Imaging 2010;31:607–616. ©2010 Wiley‐Liss, Inc.  相似文献
