For the past three years 3rd year chemical engineering students in the 4-year program at RMIT have been placed in industry for a 1-week period during second semester. This paper discusses how the program is organized and how it has been received by both industry partners and by its students. Although industry has been very positive about the program, issues of concern relate to the shortness of the placement, insurance coverage and confidentiality. The staff was concerned about losing a week of teaching time, but are now also firm believers in the value of industry placement. This change in attitude took place when staff visited students in their workplaces and saw both how much they were enjoying the experience and how enthusiastically industry was responding. The students are overwhelming in their support for the industry placement and almost all report an awakening in their understanding of what their future might look like. There have been some minor issues relating to the impact on their part-time jobs, and on travel difficulties, but overall the program has had a very positive effect on their motivation to do well. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the program is the collaborative partnership established with industry to produce graduates who meet their needs. 相似文献

The historical development of the cotton and man-made fibres dyeing and finishing industry is outlined. Recent developments in the structure and organisation of this industry are then discussed. The future demand for textiles made from cotton and man-made fibres is discussed. Although it is estimated that the total British market for woven and knitted fabrics of cotton and man-made fibres will increase from 3200 million yd2 in 1968 to 3600 million yd2 in 1975, practically the whole of this increase will probably be in knitting. The future organisation of the industry is discussed in relation to future demand. Finishing is now the keystone in the manufacture of textiles. Viyella is basing its forward planning on the likelihood that the demand for polyester-cotton blends will be 400–500 million yd2. The most effective way for firms in the Lancashire textile industry to become more competitive is for them to organise the finishing operation so that maximum economies are realised through long runs and bulk processing. This means that fewer than the present 139 units in piece bleaching, dyeing and printing will be required, and almost certainly fewer than the 70 postulated by the Textile Council. 相似文献

The present and estimated future use of water in England and Wales is compared with available resources. Use is overtaking easily available supply. The changes in procurement of water and disposal of effluent implied in recent legislation (setting up River Authorities and the Water Resources Board) are discussed, particularly as they are likely to affect the dyeing industry. The quality of water for use in the dyeworks is discussed in terms of dissolved and suspended impurities; and the methods available for the control of the effects on the dyeing process of ionic solutes, residual hardness, heavy metals, and bicarbonate are summarised. The problems of disposal of dyeworks' effluent are considered in so far as they impinge on national water-management policy. Savings in the cost of effluent treatment may be possible in an integrated textile industry where all processes, including disposal, are considered together in planning. Instances of process modification to avoid effluent-disposal problems are cited. 相似文献

The pulp and paper industry is one of the most important industrial sectors worldwide and has a great potential to be a cornerstone for the future bio-economy, in particular lignocellulosic bio-refineries. The potential of the membrane processes in this conversion will be highlighted in three applications related to kraft/sulphate, sulphite and thermomechanical pulping.
