Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), surface‐treated via chemical functionalization, i.e., oxidation and amidation, were used to reinforce diglycidylether of bisphenol F (DGEBF) epoxy resin. The effects of the functionalization on the dispersion stability, rheological properties, and fracture toughness of DGEBF/MWCNT composites were investigated. The dispersion homogeneity of the MWCNTs in the epoxy matrix improved after functionalization. In addition, isothermal rheology measurements revealed that the DGEBF/dodecyl amine‐functionalized MWCNT (D‐MWCNT) composite had a longer gel time and higher activation energy of cross‐linking than the DGEBF/acid‐treated MWCNT (A‐MWCNT) composite. The fracture toughness of the former was also significantly higher than that of the latter; this resulted from the relatively high dispersion stability of the D‐MWCNTs in the epoxy matrix, owing to the presence of alkyl groups on the D‐MWCNT surface. Introduction of hydrogen bonding sites onto multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) included carboxylic acid, amide‐amine, and novel amide‐urea MWCNTs for the formation of homogenous polyurethane composites. Acid oxidation and subsequent derivatization introduced hydrogen bonding functionality onto MWCNTs to reveal the effect of surface functionalization on mechanical properties in a 45 wt% hard segment polyurethane matrix. Raman spectroscopy showed an increase in the D/G peak ratio, which indicated successful oxidation, and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy also revealed elemental compositions that supported each step of the functionalization strategy. Thermogravimetric analysis supported functionalization with an increase in percent weight loss for each functionalization, and the MWCNT surface functionalization determined pH‐dependent dispersibility. The nonfunctionalized MWCNT composites showed poor dispersion with transmission electron microscopy, and in sharp contrast, the functionalized composites displayed homogenous dispersions. Tensile testing revealed improved stress at break in the functionalized MWCNT composites at low loadings due to homogenous dispersion. POLYM. Amino‐functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was carried out by grafting triethylenetetramine (TETA) on the surfaces of MWCNTs through the acid–thionyl chloride way. The amino‐functionalized MWCNTs show improved compatibility with epoxy resin and, as a result, more homogenous dispersion in the matrix. The mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of the amino‐functionalized MWCNT/epoxy composites were also investigated. It was found that introducing the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin greatly increased the charpy impact strength, glass transition temperature, and initial decomposing temperature of cured epoxy resin. In addition, introducing unfunctionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin was found greatly depressing the light transmission properties, which would affirmatively confine the application of the MWCNTs/epoxy composites in the future, while much higher light transmittance than that of unfunctionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites was found for amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites. SEM of the impact cross section and TEM of ultrathin film of the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites showed that the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs were wetted well by epoxy matrix. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study aims at developing lightweight and high performance electrically conductive nanocomposites for proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) bipolar plates (BPPs). These composites were made from an optimized co‐continuous mixture of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) reinforced with highly conductive carbon additives composed of carbon black (CB) and synthetic graphite (GR). Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) were functionalized then used to improve BPPs electrical conductivity and their mechanical properties, such as flexural and impact strengths. It was observed that the best BPP prototype was obtained using nitric acid (HNO3)‐functionalized MWCNT. The latter led to the smothest BPP surface, the lowest through‐plane resitivity (0.12 Ω cm) and the highest impact and flexural strengths. These results are attributed to the improved dispersion of the functionalized MWCNT, a result of their best compatibilization with the (PET/PVDF) polymeric phase. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Multi‐walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) nanowebs were obtained by electrospinning. For uniform dispersion of MWCNTs in PET solution, MWCNTs were functionalized by acid treatment. Introduction of carboxyl groups onto the surface of MWCNTs was examined by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. MWCNTs were added into 22 wt % PET solution in the ratio of 1, 2, 3 wt % to PET. The morphology of MWCNT/PET nanoweb was observed using field emission‐scanning electron microscopy (FE‐SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The nanofiber diameter decreased with increasing MWCNT concentration. The distribution of the nanofiber diameters showed a bi‐modal shape when MWCNTs were added. Thermal and tensile properties of electrospun MWCNT/PET nanowebs were examined using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA) and etc. Tensile strength, tensile modulus, thermal stability, and the degree of crystallinity increased with increasing MWCNT concentration. In contrast, elongation at break and cold crystallization temperature showed a contrary tendency. Electric conductivities of the MWCNT/PET nanowebs were in the electrostatic dissipation range. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) composites containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared using a melt‐blending process and used to examine the effects on the composite structure and properties of replacing PBT with acrylic acid‐grafted PBT (PBT‐g‐AA). PBT‐g‐AA and multihydroxyl‐functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNTs‐OH) were used to improve the compatibility and dispersibility of the MWCNTs within the PBT matrix. The composites were characterized morphologically using transmission electron microscopy, and chemically using Fourier transform infrared, solid‐state 13C NMR and UV‐visible absorption spectroscopy. The antibacterial and electrical conductivity properties of the composites were also evaluated. MWCNTs or MWCNTs‐OH enhanced the antibacterial activity and electrical conductivity of the PBT/MWCNT or PBT‐g‐AA/MWCNTs‐OH composites. The functionalized PBT‐g‐AA/MWCNTs‐OH composites showed markedly enhanced antibacterial properties and electrical conductivity due to the formation of ester bonds from the condensation of the carboxylic acid groups of PBT‐g‐AA with the hydroxyl groups of MWCNTs‐OH. The optimal proportion of MWCNTs‐OH in the composites was 1 wt%; in excess of this amount, the compatibility between the organic and inorganic phases was compromised. We describe the preparation, characterization and physical properties of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)‐filled epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) composites. To ensure better dispersion in the elastomer matrix, the MWCNTs were initially subjected to aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APS) treatment to bind amine functional groups (?NH2) on the nanotube surface. Successful grafting of APS on the MWCNT surface through Si–O–C linkages was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Grafting of APS on the MWCNT surface was further corroborated using elemental analysis. ENR nanocomposites with various filler loadings were prepared by melt compounding to generate pristine and APS‐modified MWCNT‐filled elastomeric systems. Furthermore, we determined the effects of various filler loadings on the rheometric, mechanical, electrical and thermal degradation properties of the resultant composite materials. Rheometric cure characterization revealed that the torque difference increased with pristine MWCNT loading compared to the gum system, and this effect was more pronounced when silane‐functionalized MWCNTs were loaded, indicating that this effect was due to an increase in polymer–carbon nanotube interactions in the MWCNT‐loaded materials. Loading of silane‐functionalized MWCNTs in the ENR matrix resulted in a significant improvement in the mechanical, electrical and thermal degradation properties of the composite materials, when compared to gum or pristine MWCNT‐loaded materials.© 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

The ultrasonically assisted preparation and characterization of poly(amide‐imide) (PAI) composites containing functionalized multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) are reported. To improve the dispersion in and compatibility with the polymer matrix, the MWCNTs were surface‐modified with p‐aminophenol (p‐AP) under microwave irradiation. The process is fast, one‐pot, easy and results in a high degree of functionalization as well as dispersibility in organic solvents. The p‐AP‐functionalized MWCNTs (MWCNTs‐AP) were analysed by means of field emission and transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results consistently confirm the formation of p‐AP functionalities on MWCNTs which are able to undergo additional reactions, while the structure of the MWCNTs remains relatively intact. MWCNTs‐AP/PAI hybrid films were prepared with various MWCNTs‐AP contents (5–15 wt%) using a solution‐casting technique. Microscopic observations show that the dispersion of the MWCNTs‐AP is improved as a result of the organic groups on the MWCNT surface and functional groups in the PAI structure. The properties of the obtained composites were characterized extensively using the aforementioned techniques. TGA results show that the hybrid films exhibit a good thermal stability. Tensile mechanical testing was performed for the prepared composites, the results of which indicate an increase in the elastic modulus and tensile strength with increasing MWCNTs‐AP content. © 2013 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were amino‐functionalized by 1,2‐ethylenediamine (EDA)' triethylenetetramine (TETA), and dodecylamine (DDA), and investigated by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The dispersion of the DDA functionalized MWCNT in DMF is better than that of the MWCNT functionalized by the EDA and the TETA. Carbon nanotubes reinforced epoxy resin composites were prepared, and the effect of the amino‐functionalization on the properties of the composites was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamical mechanical analysis (DMA), and TGA. The composites reinforced by the MWCNTs demonstrate improvement in various mechanical properties. The increase of Tg of the composites with the addition of amino‐functionalized MWCNT compared to the Tg of the composites with the addition of unfunctionalized MWCNT was due to the chemical combination and the physical entanglements between amino group from modified MWNTs and epoxy group from the epoxy resin. The interfacial bonding between the epoxy and the amino group of the EDA and the TETA‐modified MWCNT is more important than the well dispersion of DDA‐modified MWCNT in the composites for the improvement of the mechanical properties. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)/multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) nanocomposites were prepared by dispersion of MWCNTs in aqueous solution using half neutralized sodium salt of sebacic acid as a modifier. The physical interaction of half neutralized sodium salt of sebacic acid with MWCNT (cation‐π interaction) has been established by using Fourier transform infrared and Raman spectroscopic analyses. Such interaction helps in debundling the MWCNTs and resulted in a better dispersion in PEO matrix as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Addition of MWCNT significantly improves the storage modulus in rheological measurements as well as in dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. The crystallization behaviors of the composites made with the unmodified and modified MWCNTs were investigated. The modified MWCNT‐based composites shows large number of spherulite with smaller size compared to those observed in unmodified MWCNT‐based composite. POLYM. ENG. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) filled polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared by a corotating intermeshing twin screw extruder. To improve the dispersion of MWCNTs, the surface of MWCNT was modified with 1,10‐diaminodecane, and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MA‐g‐PP) was used as a compatibilizer. Micrographs of well dispersed functionalized MWCNTs (diamine‐MWCNT) were observed due to the reaction between MA‐g‐PP and diamine‐MWCNT in PP/MA‐g‐PP/diamine‐MWCNTs composites. The different behaviors in crystallization and melting temperatures of PP/MA‐g‐PP/diamine‐MWCNTs composite were observed compared to PP and PP/neat‐MWCNT. Especially, the decomposition temperature of the composite was increased by 50°C compared to PP. PP/MA‐g‐PP/diamine‐MWCNTs composite showed the highest complex viscosity. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

This study investigates the effect of the thiol‐ene click reaction on thermal conductivity and shear strength of the epoxy composites reinforced by various silane‐functionalized hybrids of sulfhydryl‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (SH‐MWCNTs) and vinyl‐grafted MWCNTs (CC‐MWCNTs). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the sulfhydryl groups and vinyl groups are successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs, after treatment of MWCNT with triethoxyvinylsilane and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), HotDisk thermal constant analyzer (HotDisk), optical microscope, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to characterize the resultant composites. It is demonstrated that the hybrid of 75 wt % SH‐MWCNTs and 25 wt % CC‐MWCNTs has better dispersion and stability in epoxy matrix, and shows a stronger synergistic effect in improving the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite via the thiol‐ene click reaction with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile) as thermal initiator. Furthermore, the tensile shear strength results of MWCNT/epoxy composites and the optical microscopy photographs of shear failure section indicate that the composite with the hybrid MWCNTs has higher shear strength than that with raw MWCNTs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polypropylene‐grafted multiwalled carbon nanotubes (PP‐MWCNTs) were produced from the reaction of PP containing the hydroxyl groups and MWCNTs having 2‐bromoisobutyryl groups. The PP‐MWCNTs had a significantly rougher surface than the original MWCNTs. PP‐MWCNTs had PP layers of thickness 10–15 nm on the outer walls of the MWCNTs. PP/PP‐MWCNT composites and PP/MWCNT composites were prepared by solution mixing in o‐xylene. Unlike PP/MWCNT composites, PP‐MWCNTs were homogeneously dispersed in the PP matrix. As a consequence, the thermal stability and conductivity of PP/PP‐MWCNT composites were dramatically improved even if only 1 wt % of PP‐MWNTs was added to the PP matrix. The good miscibility of PP and PP‐MWCNTs plays a critical role in the formation of the homogeneous composites and leads the high thermal stability and conductivity. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Directly functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with benzene‐1,3,5‐tricarboxylic acid (BTC) and 3,5‐diaminobenzoic acid (DAB) were successfully accomplished with less structural damage as confirmed by XPS and FT‐Raman results. Their dispersibility and thermal stability were achieved after the functionalization. The functional groups on MWCNT surfaces can accelerate the curing reaction of epoxy composites remarkable inducing rather low exothermic peak temperature (Tp) and exothermic heat of reaction (ΔH). The values of activation energy (Ea) obtained from Kissinger and Ozawa methods obviously decreased with the introduction of MWCNTs, especially DAB‐MWCNTs. The dynamic mechanical properties notably enhanced with the incorporation of unmodified and functionalized MWCNTs. The crosslink density (ρ) increased and free volume fraction (fg) decreased, resulting in dramatic increase of glass transition temperatures (Tg) and decrease of coefficient of thermal expansion. Additionally, epoxy composites exhibited low dielectric constant close to that of neat epoxy resin. From these remarkable properties, MWCNT/epoxy composites can be considered as a good candidate for high performance insulation materials. POLYM. ENG. Carbon nanotube dispersion in polymer matrix is one of the most crucially important aspects in carbon nanotube/polymer composites. This paper is aimed to discuss the considerable improvement in dispersion of multi walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) in poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix that was attained through bio-functionalization of MWCNTs. Initially, for getting better dispersion in water, pure MWCNTs have been functionalized by l-phenylalanine amino acid. The functionalized MWCNTs (f-MWCNTs) show much enhanced solubility in water. So, effects of modified MWCNT on dispersion in PVA matrix and certain properties of the resulting composites, like; mechanical, thermal and morphological properties were studied. The prepared composites were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Also, the mechanical and thermal properties of composite films have been investigated and revealed that incorporation of just a few percent of f-MWCNTs can improve the PVA mechanical and thermal properties significantly.  相似文献

Multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with liquid‐like behavior at room temperature were prepared with sulfonic acid terminated organosilanes as corona and tertiary amine as canopy. The liquid‐like MWCNT derivative had low viscosity at room temperature (3.89 Pa s at 20°C) and exhibited non‐Newtonian shear‐thinning behavior. The weight fraction of MWCNT in the derivative was 16.72%. The MWCNT derivative showed very good dispersion in organic solvents, such as ethanol and acetone. The liquid‐like MWCNT derivative was incorporated into epoxy matrix to investigate the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites and the distribution of MWCNTs in the matrix. When the liquid‐like MWCNT derivative content was up to 1 wt %, the flexural strength and impact toughness of composites were 12.1 and 124% higher than the pure epoxy matrix, respectively. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) confirmed the very good dispersion of the liquid‐like MWCNT derivative in epoxy matrix. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Polyimide‐MWCNT nanocomposites were prepared by the reaction of a heterocyclic diamine monomer of bis(4‐amino‐3,5‐dimethylphenyl)‐2‐chloro‐3‐quinolylmethane (BACQM), pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) with unmodified MWCNT (MWCNT), acid‐functionalized MWCNT (acid‐MWCNT) or amine‐functionalized MWCNT (amine‐MWCNT) using microwave irradiation as well as by the conventional method. The structure of the monomer was confirmed by FTIR, 1H‐NMR, and 13C‐NMR spectral techniques. The glass transition temperature (Tg) of the MWCNTs/polyimide nanocomposite was found to be higher than that of the unfilled polyimide system. The Tg's of both systems were higher when prepared with the microwave method than the conventional synthesis. The Tg's of the nanocomposites using acid and amine functionalized MWCNTs are greater than 300°C, in both methods. This is attributed to the presence of hydrogen bond and strong covalent bond in both the acid‐MWCNT/polyimide and amine‐MWCNT/polyimide systems. The morphological studies of the nanocomposites synthesized using microwave irradiation show that a distinct MWCNT nanofibrillar network is formed in the matrix when MWCNT or acid‐MWCNT is used. A homogeneous morphology, without distinct nanotube domains is seen when the amine‐MWCNT is covalently linked to the polymer. POLYM. Nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and poly(methyl methacrylate‐co‐octadecyl methacrylate) (M/O) matrices and four different types of multiwall carbon nanotubes: pristine, oxidized (MWCNT–COOH), methyl ester (MWCNT–COOCH3), and dodecyl ester (MWCNT–COOC12H25) functionalized, were prepared in situ by radical (co)polymerization. The effectiveness of preparation of nanocomposites regarding dispersion and distribution of various MWCNT in polymer matrices was sized by Scanning electron microscopy. In case of PMMA matrix, the best dispersion and distribution were accomplished for MWCNT–COOCH3 due to their chemical resemblance with polymer matrix. After the introduction of 10 mol % of octadecyl methacrylate in polymer matrix a fairly good dispersion and distribution of MWCNT–COOCH3 were retained. The addition of 1 wt % of MWCNTs caused a significant reduction in the degree of polymerization of the PMMA matrix. But at the same time, the present MWCNTs increased storage modulus of PMMA nanocomposites except for dodecyl ester functionalized MWCNT. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Surface functionalization of multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was carried out by introducing a ylide group containing anchored phenol structures. Epoxy nanocomposites filled with modified and pristine carbon nanotubes were prepared, and their mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties were evaluated. Mechanical properties such as tensile strengths and Young’s moduli of the epoxy nanocomposites increased significantly with the addition of the modified MWCNTs compared to the pristine MWCNTs, due to the strong interaction between the modified MWCNTs and the epoxy matrix. Scanning electron microscopy of the fractured epoxy systems revealed that the functionalized MWCNTs were finely dispersed in the matrix, as opposed to the pristine carbon nanotubes. The epoxy/functionalized MWCNT nanocomposite had a lower surface electrical resistance than the epoxy/pristine MWCNT nanocomposite, confirming the effect of functionalization.  相似文献

Cellulose acetate (CA)‐based nanocomposites with various contents of neat multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) or acid‐treated one (MWCNT‐COOH) are prepared via melt‐compounding method and investigated their morphology, thermal stability, mechanical, and electrical properties. SEM microphotographs reveal that MWCNT‐COOHs are dispersed uniformly in the CA matrix, compared with neat MWCNTs. FTIR spectra support that there exists a specific interaction between carboxyl groups of MWCNT‐COOHs and ester groups of CA, indicating good interfacial adhesion between MWCNT‐COOHs and CA matrix. Accordingly, thermal stability and dynamic mechanical properties of CA/MWCNT‐COOH nanocomposites were higher than those of CA/MWCNT composites. On the contrary, electrical volume resistivities of CA/MWCNT‐COOH nanocomposites are found to be somewhat higher than those of CA/MWCNT composites, which is because of the deterioration of graphene structures for MWCNT‐COOHs and the good dispersion of MWCNT‐COOHs in the CA matrix. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
