Large-scale on-demand multimedia servers that can provide independent and interactive access to a vast amount of multimedia information to a large number of concurrent clients will be required for a widespread deployment of exciting multimedia applications. Our project, called Massively-parallel And Real-time Storage (MARS) is aimed at prototype development of such a large-scale server. This paper primarily focuses on the distributed data layout and scheduling techniques developed as a part of this project. These techniques support a high degree of parallelism and concurrency, and efficiently implement various playout control operations, such as fast forward, rewind, pause, resume, frame advance and random access.  相似文献

Recent advances in mobile computing and distributed multimedia systems allow mobile hosts (clients) to access wireless multimedia systems anywhere and at anytime, but not without creating a new set of issues and trade-offs. To the best of our knowledge, there has been very little research in dealing with the synchronization problem in wireless and mobile multimedia systems. In this paper, we propose an efficient distributed synchronization algorithm using quasi-sink for wireless and mobile multimedia systems to ensure and facilitate mobile client access to multimedia objects. We discuss the algorithm and provide its proof of correctness. We also present a set of simulation experiments to evaluate the performance of our scheme using message complexity and buffer usage at each frame arrival time. Our results indicate that our scheme exhibits a significant low message complexity and no underflow and overflow within the bounded delivery time.  相似文献

One of the key components of a multiuser multimedia-on-demand system is the data server. Digitalization of traditionally analog data such as video and audio, and the feasibility of obtaining network bandwidths above the gigabit-per-second range, are two important advances that have made possible the realization, in the near future, of interactive distributed multimedia systems. Secondary-to-main memory I/O technology has not kept pace with advances in networking, main memory, and CPU processing power. Consequently, the performance of the server has a direct bearing on the overall performance of such a system. In this paper, we present a highperformance solution to the I/O retrieval problem in a distributed multimedia system. We develop a model for the architecture of a server for such a system. Parallelism of data retrieval is achieved by striping the data across multiple disks. We present the algorithms for server operation when servicing a constant number of streams, as well as the admission control policy for accepting requests for new streams. The performance of any server ultimately depends on the data access patterns. Two modifications of the basic retrieval algorithm are presented to exploit data access patterns in order to improve system throughput and response time. Finally, we present preliminary performance results of these algorithms on the IBM SP1 and Intel Paragon parallel computers.  相似文献

Authoring of multimedia content can be considered as composing media assets such as images, videos, text, and audio in time, space, and interaction into a coherent multimedia presentation. Personalization of such content means that it reflects the users’ or user groups’ profile information and context information. Enriching the multimedia content with semantically rich metadata allows for a better search and retrieval of the content. To actually create personalized semantically-rich multimedia content, a manual authoring of the many different documents for all the different users’ and user groups’ needs is not feasible. Rather a (semi-)automatic authoring of the content seems reasonable. We have analyzed in detail today’s approaches and systems for authoring, personalizing, and semantically enriching multimedia presentations. Based on this analysis, we derived a general creation chain for the (semi-)automatic generation of such content. In this paper, we introduce this creation chain. We present our software engineering support for the chain, the component framework SemanticMM4U. The canonical processes supported by the creation chain and SemanticMM4U framework are described in detail. We also provide an explicit mapping of SemanticMM4U framework components to the processes and argue for the benefits of defining canonical processes for creating personalized semantically rich multimedia presentations.  相似文献

As object-oriented analysis and design techniques mature, the promises of object-orientation become more realizable. The advent of multimedia hardware and software technology give rise to a need for generalized multimedia data access methods. This paper describes the object-oriented development and subsequent maintenance of ENFORMS, an object-oriented distributed multimedia information system. We discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using object-oriented analysis and design techniques to develop a general client–server architecture for browsing, retrieving, and analyzing distributed multimedia data. We also describe lessons learned from this project, including the impact of a rigorous application of object-oriented analysis and design techniques.  相似文献

The Internet provides a universal platform for large-scale distribution of information and supports inter-organizational services, system integration, and collaboration. Use of multimedia documents for dissemination and sharing of massive amounts of information is becoming a common practice for Internet-based applications and enterprises. With the rapid proliferation of multimedia data management technologies over the Internet, there is growing concern about security and privacy of information. Composing multimedia documents in a distributed heterogeneous environment involves integrating media objects from multiple security domains that may employ different access control policies for media objects. In this paper, we present a security model for distributed document management system that allows creation, storage, indexing, and presentation of secure multimedia documents. The model is based on a time augmented Petri-net and provides a flexible, multilevel access control mechanism that allows clearance-based access to different levels of information in a document. In addition, the model provides detailed multimedia synchronization requirements including deterministic and non-deterministic temporal relations and incomplete timing information among media objects.  相似文献

Building a distributed system from third-party components introduces a set of problems, mainly related to compatibility and communication. Our existing approach to solve such problems is to build a centralized adaptor which restricts the system’s behavior to exhibit only deadlock-free and desired interactions. However, in a distributed environment such an approach is not always suitable. In this paper, we show how to automatically generate a distributed adaptor for a set of black-box components. First, by taking into account a specification of the interaction behavior of each component, we synthesize a behavioral model for a centralized glue adaptor. Second, from the synthesized adaptor model and a specification of the desired behavior that must be enforced, we generate one local adaptor for each component. The local adaptors cooperatively behave as the centralized one restricted with respect to the specified desired interactions.  相似文献
