BACKGROUND: In a number of studies it has been shown that 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidinooxy (TEMPO)‐mediated polymerization of acrylates is not facile. Therefore, the object of the study reported here was to prepare poly[styrene‐block‐(tert‐butyl acrylate)] (PS‐b‐PtBA) block copolymers using 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator as an initiator, in the presence of small amounts of N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF). The kinetic analysis and the effect of DMF on the reaction mechanism are also discussed. RESULTS: PS‐b‐PtBA block copolymer was prepared through polymerization of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) initiated by 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator at 135 °C. The polymerization rate of tBA could be increased by adding a small amount of DMF, and the number average molecular weight of the PtBA block in PS‐b‐PtBA reached 10 000 g mol?1 with narrow polydispersity. The activation rate constant kact?tBA of alkoxyamine increased and the recombination rate constant krec?tBA decreased with increasing DMF concentration. CONCLUSION: DMF was shown to be a rate‐enhancing additive for the polymerization of tBA using a 4‐oxo‐TEMPO‐capped polystyrene macroinitiator. From the kinetic analysis, it was concluded that the improvement of polymerization with the addition of DMF was due to an increase in kact?tBA and a decrease in krec?tBA. Amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymers of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization in bulk and in various solvents with a difunctional PEO macroinitiator and a Cu(I)X/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine catalyst system at 85°C where X=Cl or Br. The polymerization proceeded via controlled/living process, and the molecular weights of the obtained block copolymers increased linearly with monomer conversion. In the process, the polydispersity decreased and finally reached a value of less than 1.3. The polymerization followed first‐order kinetics with respect to monomer concentration, and increases in the ethylene oxide repeating units or chain length in the macroinitiator decreased the rate of polymerization. The rate of polymerization of MMA with the PEO chloro macroinitiator and CuCl proceeded at approximately half the rate of bromo analogs. A faster rate of polymerization and controlled molecular weights with lower polydispersities were observed in bulk polymerization compared with polar and nonpolar solvent systems. In the bulk polymerization, the number‐average molecular weight by gel permeation chromatography (Mn,GPC) values were very close to the theoretical line, whereas lower than the theoretical line were observed in solution polymerizations. The macroinitiator and their block copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, matrix‐assisted laser desorption ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry, thermogravimetry (TG)/differential thermal analysis (DTA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). TG/DTA studies of the homo and block copolymers showed two‐step and multistep decomposition patterns. The DSC thermograms exhibited two glass‐transition temperatures at ?17.7 and 92°C for the PEO and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blocks, respectively, which indicated that microphase separation between the PEO and PMMA domains. SEM studies indicated a fine dispersion of PEO in the PMMA matrix. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 97: 989–1000, 2005  相似文献

The synthesis of diblock copolymers using atom transfer radical polymerization, ATRP, of n‐butyl methacrylate, BMA, and methyl methacrylate, MMA, is reported. These copolymers were prepared from 2‐bromoisobutyryl‐terminated macroinitiators of poly(MMA) and poly(BMA), using copper chloride, CuCl,/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetretramine, PMDETA, as the catalyst system, at 100°C in bulk and in benzonitrile solution. The block copolymers were characterized by means of size‐exclusion chromatography, SEC, and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The SEC analysis of the synthesized diblock copolymers confirmed important differences in the molecular weight control depending on the reaction medium (solvent effect) and the chemical structure of the macroinitiator used. In addition, differential scanning calorimetry, (DSC) measurements were performed, showing for all the copolymers a phase separation. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well defined block‐graft copolymers of cyclohexanone‐formaldehyde resin (CFR) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) were prepared via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In the first step, cyclohexanone formaldehyde resin (CFR) containing hydroxyl groups were modified with 2‐bromopropionyl bromide. Resulting multifunctional macroinitiator was used in the ATRP of MMA using copper bromide (CuBr) and N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyl‐diethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst system at 90°C. The chemical composition and structure of the copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (1H‐NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and molecular weight measurement. Molecular weight distributions of the CFR graft copolymers were measured by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Mn values up to 19,000 associated with narrow molecular weight distributions (polydispersity index (PDI) < 1.6) were obtained with conversions up to 49%. Coating properties of synthesized graft copolymers such as adhesion and gloss values were measured. They exhibited good adhesion properties on Plexiglas substrate. The thermal behaviors of all polymers were conducted using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined asymmetric amphiphilic ABA′ block copolymers composed of poly(ethylene oxide) monomethylene ether (MPEO) with different molecular weights as A or A′ block and poly(styrene) (PS) as B block were synthesized by the combination of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) and click reactions. First, bromine‐terminated diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide) monomethylene ether‐block‐poly(styrene) (MPEO‐PS‐Br) was prepared by ATRP of styrene initiated with macroinitiator MPEO‐Br, which was prepared from the esterification of MPEO and 2‐bromoisobutyryl bromide. Then, the azido‐terminated diblock copolymers MPEO‐PS‐N3 were prepared through the bromine substitution reaction with sodium azide. Propargyl‐terminated MPEO with a different molecular weight was prepared under the basic condition from propargyl alcohol and p‐toluenesulfonyl‐terminated MPEO, which was prepared through the esterification of MPEO and p‐toluenesulfochloride using pyridine as solvent. Asymmetric amphiphilic ABA′ block copolymers, with a wide range of number–average molecular weights from 1.92 × 104 to 2.47 × 104 and a narrow polydispersity from 1.03 to 1.05, were synthesized via a click reaction of the azido‐terminated diblock copolymers and the propargyl‐terminated MPEO in the presence of CuBr and 1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) catalyst system. The structures of these ABA′ block copolymers and corresponding precursors were characterized by NMR, IR, and GPC. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2009  相似文献

Poly(n‐butyl methacrylate) (PBMA)‐b‐polystyrene (PSt) diblock copolymers were synthesized by emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). PBMA macroinitiators that contained alkyl bromide end groups were obtained by the emulsion ATRP of n‐butyl methacrylate with BrCH3CHCOOC2H5 as the initiator; these were used to initiate the ATRP of styrene (St). The latter procedure was carried out at 85°C with CuCl/4,4′‐di(5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine as the catalyst and polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether as the surfactant. With this technique, PBMA‐b‐PSt diblock copolymers were synthesized. The polymerization was nearly controlled; the ATRP of St from the macroinitiators showed linear increases in number‐average molecular weight with conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR spectroscopy, 1H‐NMR, and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of the molecular weight of the macroinitiators, macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, surfactant concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP are also reported. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 98: 2123–2129, 2005  相似文献

Commercial brominated poly(isobutylene‐co‐isoprene) (BIIR) rubber has been directly used for the initiation of atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) by utilizing the allylic bromine atoms on the macromolecular chains of BIIR. The graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) from the backbone of BIIR which was used as a macroinitiator was carried out in xylene at 85 °C with CuBr/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine as a catalytic complex. The polymerization conditions were optimized by adjusting the catalyst and monomer concentration to reach a higher monomer conversion and meanwhile suppress macroscopic gelation during the polymerization process. This copolymerization followed a first‐order kinetic behavior with respect to the monomer concentration, and the number‐average molecular weight of the grafted poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) increased with reaction time. The resultant BIIR‐graft‐PMMA copolymers showed phase separation morphology as characterized by atomic force microscopy, and the presence of PMMA phase increased the polarity of the BIIR copolymers. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using commercial BIIR polymer directly as a macromolecular initiator for ATRP reactions, which opens more possibilities for BIIR modifications for wider applications. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Copolymers of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using CuBr/N,N,N′,N′,N″‐pentamethyl‐diethylenetriamine as catalyst and Methyl 2‐bromopropionate as initiator. The polydispersity of the copolymers is quite low (1.1–1.3). 13C {1H} NMR spectra of these copolymers show that the methylene and methine signals of the main chain are compositional sensitive and highly overlapped. Even the distortionless enhancement by polarization transfer (DEPT) was not able to assign the complex and overlapping signals. Assignments of the various resonance signals were done with the help of heteronuclear single quantum coherence (HSQC), total correlation spectroscopy (TOCSY), and heteronuclear multiple bond correlation (HMBC) experiments. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The chemoenzymatic synthesis of a novel diblock copolymer consisting of a hydrocarbon block of polycaprolactone (PCL) and an epoxy‐based block of poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA) was achieved by the combination of enzymatic ring‐opening polymerization (eROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A trichloromethyl‐terminated PCL macrointiator was obtained via Novozyme 435‐catalyzed eROP of ε‐caprolactone from a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol, under anhydrous conditions. PCL‐b‐PGMA diblock copolymers were synthesized in a subsequent ATRP of glycidyl methacrylate. The kinetics analysis of ATRP indicated a ‘living’/controlled radical polymerization. The macromolecular structure and thermal properties of the PCL macroinitiator and of the diblock copolymer were characterized using NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The well‐defined PCL‐b‐PGMA amphiphilic diblock copolymer self‐assembled in aqueous solution into nanoscale micelles. The size and shape of the resulting micelles were investigated using dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and tapping‐mode atomic force microscopy. In recent years, much attention has been given to the development of specialty polymers from useful materials. In this context, amphiphilic block copolymers were prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of N‐phenylmaleimide (N‐PhMI) or styrene using a poly(2‐hydroxyethylmethacrylate)‐Cl macroinitiator/CuBr/bipyridine initiating system. The macroinitiator P(HEMA)‐Cl was directly prepared in toluene by reverse ATRP using BPO/FeCl3 6 H2O/PPh3 as initiating system. The microstructure of the block copolymers were characterized using FTIR, 1H‐NMR, 13C‐NMR spectroscopic techniques and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermal behavior was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and thermogravimetry (TG). The theoretical number average molecular weight (Mn,th) was calculated from the feed capacity. The microphotographs of the film's surfaces show that the film's top surfaces were generally smooth. The TDT of the block copolymer P(HEMA)80b‐P(N‐PhMI)20 and P(HEMA)90b‐P(St)10 of about 290°C was also lower than that found for the macroi′nitiator poly(HEMA)‐Cl. The block copolymers exhibited only one Tg before thermal decomposition, which could be attributed to the low molar content of the N‐PhMI or St blocks respectively. This result also indicates that the phase behavior of the copolymers is predominately determined by the HEMA block. The curves reveal that the polymers show phase transition behavior of amorphous polymers. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2010  相似文献

Poly(butyl methylacrylate)–b–poly(dimethylsiloxane)–b–poly(butyl methylacrylate) (PBMA–b–PDMS–b–PBMA) triblock copolymers were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The reaction of α,ω‐dichloride PDMS with 2′‐hydroxyethyl‐2‐bromo‐2‐methylpropanoate gave suitable macroinitiators for the ATRP of BMA. The latter procedure was carried out at 110°C in a phenyl ether solution with CuCl and 4,4′‐di (5‐nonyl)‐2,2′‐bipyridine (dNbpy) as the catalyzing system. The polymerization was controllable, with the increase of the monomer conversion, there was a nearly linear increase of molecular weight and a decrease of polydispersity in the process of the polymerization, and the rate of the polymerization was first‐order with respect to monomer conversion. The block copolymers were characterized with IR and 1H‐NMR and differential scanning calorimetry. The effects of macroinitiator concentration, catalyst concentration, and temperature on the polymerization were also investigated. Thermodynamic data and activation parameters for the ATRP were reported. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 92: 532–538, 2004  相似文献

Diblock copolymers of poly(L ‐lactide)‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) (PLLA‐b‐PMMA) were synthesized through a sequential two‐step strategy, which combines ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), using a bifunctional initiator, 2,2,2‐trichloroethanol. The trichloro‐terminated poly(L ‐lactide) (PLLA‐Cl) with high molecular weight (Mn,GPC = 1–12 × 104 g/mol) was presynthesized through bulk ROP of L ‐lactide (L ‐LA), initiated by the hydroxyl group of the double‐headed initiator, with tin(II) octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as catalyst. The second segment of the block copolymer was synthesized by the ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA), with PLLA‐Cl as macroinitiator and CuCl/N,N,N′,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) as catalyst, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was chosen as reaction medium due to the poor solubility of the macroinitiator in conventional solvents at the reaction temperature. The trichloroethoxyl terminal group of the macroinitiator was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and 1H‐NMR spectroscopy. The comprehensive results from GPC, FTIR, 1H‐NMR analysis indicate that diblock copolymers PLLA‐b‐PMMA (Mn,GPC = 5–13 × 104 g/mol) with desired molecular composition were obtained by changing the molar ratio of monomer/initiator. DSC, XRD, and TG analyses establish that the crystallization of copolymers is inhibited with the introduction of PMMA segment, which will be beneficial to ameliorating the brittleness, and furthermore, to improving the thermal performance. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A facile approach is offered to synthesize well‐defined amphiphilic ABC triblock copolymers composed of poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (MPEO) as A block, poly(L ‐lysine) (PLLys) as B block, and poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) as C block by a combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and click reactions. The propargyl‐terminated poly(Z‐L ‐lysine)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (MPEO‐PzLLys‐PCL) diblock copolymers were synthesized via the ring‐opening polymerization of Nε‐carbobenzoxy‐L ‐lysine N‐carboxyanhydride (Z‐L ‐Lys NCA) in DMF at room temperature using propargyl amine as an initiator and the resulting amino‐terminated poly(Z‐L ‐lysine) then used in situ as a macroinitiator for the polymerization of ε‐caprolactone in the presence of stannous octoate as a catalyst. The triblock copolymers poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether –block‐poly(Z‐L ‐lysine)‐block‐poly(ε‐caprolactone) (MPEO‐PzLLys‐PCL) were synthesized via the click reaction of the propargyl‐terminated PzLLys‐PCL and azido‐terminated poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (PEO‐N3) in the presence of CuBr and 1,1,4,7,7‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine (PMDETA) catalyst system. After the removal of Z groups of L ‐lysine units, amphiphilic and biocompatible ABC triblock copolymers MPEO‐PLLys‐PCL were obtained. The structural characteristics of these ABC triblock copolymers and corresponding precursors were characterized by NMR, IR, and GPC. These results showed the click reaction was highly effective. Therefore, a facile approach is offered to synthesize amphiphilic and biocompatible ABC triblock copolymers consisting of polyether, polypeptide and polyester. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. BACKGROUND: The surface of a substrate which comprises a fibrous material is brought into contact with a type of amphiphilic block copolymer which comprises hydrophilic/hydrophobic polymeric blocks. These amphiphilic copolymers have been synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique. The atom transfer radical polymerization of poly(2,3,4,5,6‐pentafluorostyrene)‐block‐poly(ethylene oxide) (PFS‐b‐PEO) copolymers (di‐ and triblock structures) with various ranges of PEO molecular weights was initiated by a PEO chloro‐telechelic macroinitiator. The polymerization, carried out in bulk and catalysed by copper(I) chloride in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine ligand, led to A–B–A amphiphilic triblock and A–B amphiphilic diblock structures. RESULTS: With most of the macroinitiators, the living nature of the polymerizations led to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distributions (1.09 < Mw/Mn < 1.33) and well‐controlled molecular structures. These block copolymers turned out to be water‐soluble through adjustment of the PEO block content (>90 wt%). Of all the block copolymers synthesized, PFS‐b‐PEO(10k)‐b‐PFS containing 10 wt% PFS was found to retard water absorption considerably. CONCLUSION: The printability of paper treated with the copolymers was evaluated with contact angle measurements and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. Commercially available chlorinated polypropylene has been used as a macroinitiator for the Cu(0)‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate and tert‐butyl acrylate to obtain well‐defined graft copolymers. The relatively narrow molecular weight distribution in the graft copolymers and linear kinetic plots indicated the controlled nature of the copolymerization reactions. Both Fourier transform infrared and 1H NMR studies confirmed that the graft reactions had taken place successfully. After graft copolymer formation, tert‐butyl groups of poly(tert‐butyl acrylate) side chains were completely converted into poly(acrylic acid) chains to afford corresponding amphiphilic graft copolymers. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry  相似文献

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) monochloro macroinitiators or PEO telechelic macroinitiators (Cl‐PEO‐Cl) were prepared from monohydroxyfunctional or dihydroxyfunctional PEO and 2‐chloro propionyl chloride. These macroinitiators were applied to the atom transfer radical polymerization of styrene (S). The polymerization was carried out in bulk at 140°C and catalyzed by Copper(I) chloride (CuCl) in the presence of 2,2′‐bipyridine (bipy) ligand (CuCl/bipy). The amphiphilic copolymers were either A‐B diblock or A‐B‐A triblock type, where A block is polystyrene (PS) and B block is PEO. The living nature of the polymerizations leads to block copolymers with narrow molecular weight distribution (1.072 < Mw/Mn < 1.392) for most of the macroinitiators synthesized. The macroinitiator itself and the corresponding block copolymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC analysis. By adjusting the content of the PEO blocks it was possible to prepare water‐soluble/dispersible block copolymers. The obtained block copolymers were used to control paper surface characteristics by surface treatment with small amount of chemicals. The printability of the treated paper was evaluated with polarity factors, liquid absorption measurements, and felt pen tests. The adsorption of such copolymers at the solid/liquid interface is relevant to the wetting and spreading of liquids on hydrophobic/hydrophilic surfaces. From our study, it is observed that the chain length of the hydrophilic block and the amount of hydrophobic block play an important role in modification of the paper surface. Among all of block copolymers synthesized, the PS‐b‐PEO‐b‐PS containing 10 wt % PS was found to retard water absorption considerably. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hyperbranched polystyrenes (PS) were prepared by living radical photopolymerization of 4‐vinylbenzyl N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate as an inimer under UV irradiation. The star‐hyperbranched copolymers were derived by grafting from surface N,N‐diethyldithiocarbamate groups of hyperbranched macroinitiator with t‐butyl methacrylate in the presence of N,N‐tetraethylthiuram disulfide. We obtained poly(methacrylic acid) star‐hyperbranched PS nanospheres by hydrolysis of poly(t‐butyl methacrylate)‐grafted chains. We established two‐dimensional (2D) regular nanopatterning by aligning continuously such nanospheres on poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) lamellar layers of PS‐block‐P2VP diblock copolymer film. Electrostatic interaction between nanosphere surface having negative charges (? COOCs) and P2VP lamellar layer acted effectively for the 2D nanopattern formation. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐polyurethane‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate) tri‐block copolymers have been synthesized successfully through atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate using telechelic bromo‐terminated polyurethane/CuBr/N,N,N,N″,N″‐pentamethyldiethylenetriamine initiating system. As the time increases, the number‐average molecular weight increases linearly from 6400 to 37,000. This shows that the poly methyl methacrylate blocks were attached to polyurethane block. As the polymerization time increases, both conversion and molecular weight increased and the molecular weight increases linearly with increasing conversion. These results indicate that the formation of the tri‐block copolymers was through atom transfer radical polymerization mechanism. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectral results of the triblock copolymers show that the molar ratio between polyurethane and poly (methyl methacrylate) blocks is in the range of 1 : 16.3 to 1 : 449.4. Differential scanning calorimetry results show Tg of the soft segment at ?35°C and Tg of the hard segment at 75°C. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci, 2008  相似文献

Well‐defined poly(vinyl acetate‐b‐methyl methacrylate) block copolymers were successfully synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) in p‐xylene with CuBr as a catalyst, 2,2′‐bipyridine as a ligand, and trichloromethyl‐end‐grouped poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc–CCl3) as a macroinitiator that was prepared via the telomerization of vinyl acetate with chloroform as a telogen. The block copolymers were characterized with gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H‐NMR. The effects of the solvent and temperature on ATRP of MMA were studied. The control over a large range of molecular weights was investigated with a high [MMA]/[PVAc–CCl3] ratio for potential industry applications. In addition, the mechanism of the polymerization was discussed. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Appl Polym Sci 101: 1089–1094, 2006  相似文献
