In the good old days, the only two-way communications link with a residence was provided by the local telephone company (telco). But the growth of the Internet and the passing, in the United States, of the Telecommunications Act of 1996 have changed that tradition. Today, a competitive local exchange carrier can compete in the turf of the local telco, now called an incumbent local-exchange carrier. In addition, cable TV operators are allowed to offer telephony and Internet access services to their subscribers along with TV programs. The question of who will supply the `last mile' pipe to the home could lead to some of the toughest fights the communications marketplace has ever seen. Winners will gain the revenues from supplying a cornucopia of phone, TV and Internet services. Hybrid fiber-coaxial-cable systems can download data from the Internet at up to 30 Mb/s while also carrying multiple telephone channels and broadcast radio and TV signals-both analog and digital. This paper concentrates on single-access technology-cable modems. The cable modem packs the Internet data in the form of 10BASE-T frames, which are fed over an Rj-45 connection to the Ethernet network interface card (NIC) in a computer. The phone connections at the cable modem are for Internet protocol (IP) telephony, which has yet to come to residences in a big way. The connection between a cable modem and the Internet is packet-switched and so the link is always active. From almost the dawn of the Internet, phone and cable companies have been fighting for the hearts and minds of the savvier consumers all over the world. The key battleground is the so-called last-mile link to the home or business, where the phone companies have been pitting their digital subscriber lines (DSLs) against the cable providers' cable modems. In most places in the world, DSLs have been the more popular option, though in the United States, with its very large cable infrastructure, cable modems have had a distinct edge. All along, however, the Holy Grail has been fiber to the curb-an all-optical link going right into homes or businesses and providing bandwidth and speed that just can't be beat. Now, three of the four US regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs, or Baby Bells)-Verizon, BellSouth, and SBC-intend to start building such fiber-optic networks to the premises as early as the first quarter of 2004. Verizon Communications has by far the most ambitious plans: it says it intends to provide every home and business it serves with a fiber-optic connection during the next 10-15 years, at an estimated total cost of as much as US $40 billion. Verizon, BellSouth, and SBC got together and agreed on a common set of specifications for fiber to the curb. They are considering responses from vendors to their requests for proposed equipment built to those specs.  相似文献

About 2800 lines out of a total of 8,500,000 subscriber lines in Taiwan have been sampled and characterized. Various kinds of physical compositions and transmission characteristics were investigated and measured. It was found that the near-end crosstalk (NEXT) loss of Taiwan's subscriber loops is about 10 dB worse than that of US local loops. A corresponding new foam-skin PIC cable is proposed to reduce the NEXT loss. The new type of cable will be used to replace the paper cable and old foam-skin PIC cable step-by-step. Based on the measured data, the feasibility of HDSL (high bit rate digital subscriber line) service in Taiwan is studied. To improve the HDSL service distance via the existing subscriber lines, several cable models are discussed and suggested  相似文献
