Summary: Polyelectrolyte multilayer films of poly(acrylic acid) (PAA)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and PAH/poly(sodium 4‐styrenesulfonate) (PSS) based on electrostatic interactions as a driving force are patterned by room‐temperature nanoimprint lithography (RT‐NIL). Under an imprinting pressure of 40 bar for 8 min, well‐defined pattern structures with a line width of 330 nm and a separation of 413 nm are achieved. Meanwhile, hydrogen‐bonding‐directed multilayer films of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVPON)/poly(methyl acrylic acid) (PMAA) and poly(4‐vinylpyridine)/PAA can also be patterned in a similar way by RT‐NIL. The successful imprinting of these films originates from the high compressibility and fluidity of the layered polymeric films under high pressure.

A general approach to fabricate a magnetic field responsive colloidal crystal film has been developed. This is carried out by depositing monodisperse Fe3O4/PS composite magnetic nanospheres on the surface of an agarose‐gel coated substrate. The optical properties of the resultant film can be easily controlled by an external magnetic field, which is caused by assembly of the magnetic nanospheres and alteration of the interparticle distance. With the help of a designed array of small magnets, both the color and pattern of the film can be conveniently modulated and the tuning range covers almost the whole visible spectrum. This work will be important for the potential application of monodisperse magnetic nanospheres in fabricating novel sensors, displays and optoelectronic devices.

Summary: A water‐soluble gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 was prepared by chloroauric acid and a polypseudorotaxane 1 of mono‐6‐thio‐β‐cyclodextrin with poly(propylene glycol) bis(2‐aminopropyl ether) ( ≈ 2 000) in the presence of sodium borohydride in N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. The investigative results indicated that the gold nanoparticle aggregate 2 might act as an efficient DNA‐cleavage reagent.

The synthesis of water soluble star‐block copolypeptides and their encapsulation properties are described. The star‐block copolypeptides, obtained by ring‐opening polymerization of amino acid N‐carboxyanhydrides, consist of a PEI core, a hydrophobic polyphenylalanine or polyleucine inner shell, and a negatively charged polyglutamate outer shell. The encapsulation study showed that these water soluble, amphiphilic star‐block copolypeptides could simultaneously encapsulate versatile compounds ranging from hydrophobic to anionic and cationic hydrophilic guest molecules.

We report the simple one‐pot synthesis of size tunable zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) out of an organometallic ZnO precursor using the self‐assembly of solution phase polystyrene‐block‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) micelles. The resulting hybrid material could be deposited on various substrates in a straightforward manner with the NPs showing size‐dependent absorption and photoluminescence due to the quantum‐size effect. We compare the results to the assembly of preformed NPs which are selectively incorporated in the poly(2‐vinylpyridine) core of the micelles due to the high affinity of ZnO to vinylpyridine.

Interaction chromatography has been employed to validate that adsorption of poly[styrene‐co‐(4‐bromostyrene)] (PBrxS) random copolymers, where x denotes the mole fraction of 4‐bromostyrene (4–BrS) in PBrxS in solution depends on the average number of adsorptive segments, the type of adsorbing substrate, and on the co‐monomer sequence distribution in PBrxS.

Photochromic spiropyran molecules were embedded in electrospun polymer microfibers. Electrospinning of a clear viscous chloroform solution containing a spiropyran and a matrix polymer, such as polystyrene and polyethylene oxide, affords polymer microfibers that are photoswitchable. Photomasked, 365 nm UV irradiation of the microfibers results in the generation of patterned color images owing to the selective transformation of the spiropyran molecules from their ring‐closed SP to ring‐opened MC form. The UV‐irradiated areas display brilliant red fluorescence, which changes to green fluorescence upon prolonged irradiation.

A dielectric elastomer derived from a polystyrene‐block‐poly(ethylene‐co‐butylene)‐block‐polystyrene triblock copolymer swollen with a midblock‐selective solvent is reported to show promise as a nanostructured organic actuator requiring no pre‐strain. This might provide an attractive alternative to conventional acrylic, siloxane, and polyurethane elastomers since the electromechanical properties are composition‐tunable.

The various end‐to‐end distances of four‐junction polymers are investigated. The sizes of the different kinds of equal length branches and the backbone of two different polymers, with either nine or eleven branches, are estimated by means of both renormalization‐group and MC calculations. The comparisons of first‐order ε = 4 − d predictions with the MC results are satisfactory. The same trends are present in both techniques. The excluded‐volume interactions from additional branches further expand the various parts of the chains so that internal branches are larger than external ones. The branch ratios in the eleven‐branch case are expanded even more than the corresponding ratios of the nine‐branch polymer.

The dual self‐assembling polycondensation of p‐acetoxybenzoic acid (ABA) and p‐acetamidobenzoic acid in Therm S 800 was examined at 300 °C. Needle‐like crystals and lath‐like crystals were formed simultaneously through reaction‐induced crystallization of oligomers at a molar ratio of 30–50 mol‐% ABA in the feed. The needle‐like crystals comprised more p‐oxybenzoyl units, whereas the lath‐like ones contained higher amounts of p‐benzamide moieties.

Polymerizations of methyl methacrylate with (α‐diimine)nickel(II)/methylaluminoxane (MAO) and (pyridyl bis(imine))iron(II) and (pyridyl bis(imine))cobalt(II)/MAO are reported. Effects of structural variation of the ligand on the activities of catalysts and polymer microstructure are described. The catalyst systems gave syndio‐rich poly(methyl methacrylate). The α‐diimine system showed much higher activity than the pyridyl bis(imine) systems under similar polymerization conditions.

Summary: Evidence of clay migration from the core to the surface of poly(propylene)/montmorillonite nanocomposites is provided. A three‐ to fivefold increase in the clay concentration of the surface is obtained during isothermal heating in oxidative atmosphere. The mechanism of migration is investigated by means of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. It is shown that oxygen plays a fundamental role in the migration mechanism.

The quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation technique (QCM‐D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) have been employed to study the interaction of N‐tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TdTmAB) with polyelectrolyte multilayers containing poly(sodium 4‐styrene sulfonate) (PSS) as the polyanion and either poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) or poly(diallyl dimethyl ammonium chloride) (PDADMAC) as the polycations. The multilayers were exposed to aqueous solutions of TdTmAB. This resulted in a selective removal of PDADMAC PSS layers while layers with PAH as polycation remained stable. It is suggested that PDADMAC/PSS multilayers can be employed as strippable protecting layers.

A two‐armed polymer with a crown ether core self‐assembles to produce macroporous films with pores perpendicularly reaching through the film down to the substrate. A possible assembling mechanism is discussed. The pore size can be conveniently adjusted by changing the solution concentration. These through‐hole macroporous films provide a template for fabricating an array of Cu nanoparticle aggregates.

By Monte Carlo simulations we provide insight into the isolated single‐ and double‐tethered (ST and DT) polymer chain attached to an impenetrable surface to elucidate open theoretical questions and guide future experiments investigating the impact of tethering on the genome packaging by concurrent visualisation of multiple loci along the chromosome(s). In the models, either one or both ends (at a grafting distance d) are fixed or the ST and DT chain are “annealed” by permitting the anchor(s) to diffuse laterally along the surface. We analyse chain self‐entanglement, intrachain segment correlations, the relationship between mean square physical distance and corresponding contour length and provide the first report on the diffusion behaviour.

Summary: Transcrystallinity in UHMWPE fiber‐reinforced HDPE composites promotes a significant β transition that is untypical of high‐density polyethylene. Surface profiling by atomic force microscopy identifies two distinct morphologies in the composite without a boundary phase between them, which coincide with the transcrystalline layer and with the bulk spherulitic matrix. As a result, the claim that attributes this transition to loose chain folds at the lamella surface is favored.

Summary: This communication describes a novel kind of PMMA‐PEG semi‐interpenetrating network (semi‐IPN) which shows excellent shape‐memory behavior at two transition temperatures, the Tm of the PEG crystal and the Tg of the semi‐IPN. Based on a reversible order‐disorder transition of the crystals below and above the Tm of PEG, and the large difference in storage modulus below and above the Tg of the semi‐IPN, the polymer has a recovery ratio of 91 and 99%, respectively.
