We have developed a new microstructure film for wide viewing liquid crystal displays (LCDs). By attaching it to the surface of a conventional LCD, the viewing angle characteristics of LCD has drastically improved without causing a blur of the frontal image and a decrease in the contrast ratio under bright ambient light conditions. This film can be applied to various LC modes including twisted nematic and multidomain vertical alignment by changing its internal micrometer‐size 3D structure. Further, this film can be mass‐produced efficiently by self alignment roll‐to‐roll process.  相似文献

Abstract— Motion artifacts observed in 3‐D LCDs using shutter glasses (SG 3D) has been investigated. A ghost‐like artifact has been observed for static images due to incomplete image separation between the left and right views. The observed motion artifacts are different for the left and right views. And they occur even for images with zero binocular disparity. In this respect, the phenomena of observed artifacts in 3‐D moving images are differentfrom those of 3‐D static images. 3‐D motion artifacts were analyzed and are related to the moving speed of the images and the amount of binocular disparity.  相似文献

Abstract— 3‐D cross‐talk typically represents the ratio of image overlap between the left and right views. For stereoscopic LCDs using shutter‐glasses technology, 3‐D cross‐talk for stereoscopic LCD TV with a diagonal size of 46 in. and vertical alignment (VA) mode was measured to change from 1% to 10% when the stereoscopic display is rotated around the vertical axis. Input signals consist of the left and right images that include patterns of different amounts of binocular disparity and various gray levels. Ghost‐like artifacts are observed. Furthermore, intensities of these artifacts are observed to change as the stereoscopic display is rotated about the vertical axis. The temporal luminance of the LCD used in stereoscopic TV was found to be dependent on the viewing direction and can be considered as one cause of the phenomenon of angular dependence of performance for stereoscopic displays.  相似文献

Abstract— A high‐performance reflective polarization converter which could be used in a backlight recycling system for liquid‐crystal‐display (LCD) devices is proposed. The device consists of a twisted‐nematic (TN) liquid‐crystal film, a uniaxial A‐plate, and a reflector. The configuration parameters, such as thickness and orientation of the films, are optimized using a genetic algorithm. As a result, the design can convert light from TM to TE polarization (or TE to TM) at a maximum 99.7%, minimum 91.3%, and average 96.7% conversion efficiency for the entire visible spectrum and incident angle from 0 to 60°. Such a broadband reflective polarization converter is particularly useful for enhancing the light efficiency and reducing the power consumption of LCDs.  相似文献

Abstract— An achromatic quarter‐wave film using one twisted‐nematic liquid‐crystal (TNLC) cell, a chromatic half‐wave plate, and a chromatic quarter‐wave plate is presented. The Jones matrix is used to calculate the optical properties of the system. An optimal algorithm is used for optimizing the configuration parameters. Simulation results indicate that the designed configuration is capable of turning a linearly polarized light into perfectly circularly polarized light in the wavelength range 400–700 nm. The manufacturing tolerance of the cell gap and twisted angle of the TNLC are good.  相似文献

Abstract— We describe a new 28‐view 25‐in. autostereoscopic display that combines both time‐sequential and multi‐projector technology. It is constructed from four time‐sequential subsystems, which abut behind a single ferroelectric liquid‐crystal shutter. The display has a resolution of 512 × 384 pixels in 24‐bit color. It allows multiple viewers to simultaneously view stereoscopic images without the need for special glasses or headgear.  相似文献

Abstract— It is expected that 3‐D will be the next step in the enhanced viewing experience. At present, there are two competing 3‐D technologies for glasses‐based consumer TVs: active shutter glasses and passive polarized glasses. With the ongoing reduction in response time of liquid‐crystal displays (LCDs), this article will focus on shutter‐glass‐based stereoscopic LCDs. In this paper, the properties of such a display system is described and it is demonstrated that by adding a line‐scanning backlight, the cross‐talk can be reduced to less than 1.4%, allowing for excellent 3‐D portrayal. For images of extreme contrast, this is perceivable, but not judged annoying by a panel of expert viewers. Which characteristics of the display and shutter glasses that should be optimized to create an inexpensive, cross‐talk‐free, 3‐D LCD are discussed.  相似文献

Directional backlight unit (BLU) design concept was applied to realize full‐resolution field alternate auto‐stereoscopic liquid crystal displays (LCDs) with built‐in 3D/2D and 2D/3D. The application‐oriented BLU design requires priority in realizing 2D mode or 3D mode. The switching characteristic of BLU with two confronting illuminating sets was applied to build 2D mode into 3D display and 3D mode into 2D display. An LCD with 2D mode as primary function requires higher double‐sided luminance uniformity than 3D mode. On the other hand, an LCD with 3D mode requires higher single‐sided luminance uniformity than 2D mode. For increasing the double‐sided luminance uniformity for 2D mode as a primary function of the display, the former BLU design was realized by using uniform prismatic structure, that is, using uniform bilateral prismatic structure with a cross section of isosceles triangle on the back surface of the light‐guide plate. For increasing single‐sided luminance uniformity for 3D mode as a primary function of the display, the latter was realized by using graded angle design, that is, unilateral prisms with a cross section of a scalene triangle on the back surface of the light‐guide plate. The LCDs of small‐sized‐handheld game devices and still cameras were fabricated using the 3D/2D and 2D/3D displays.  相似文献

In this paper, a design for a fast response display consisting of dual π‐cells is investigated. The thickness of each liquid crystal cell layer is only half of a single LC cell device with the same retardation change, which results in about one quarter of the response time for a single π‐cell device. While this result is obviously anticipated, an additional advantage is that a good viewing angle can be achieved by using negative C plates, which allows a lower cost device with a more uniform black state across the area of the display than the case of a single cell compensated by a discotic compensator. We also propose a solution to solve parallax issue from two‐layer structure of liquid crystal cell, and it opens a window of opportunity for a device with two‐layer structure.  相似文献

Abstract— By using a new pixel design and a novel driving scheme that adds a bias electrode and a bias TFT to the ordinary pixel structure, a high‐contrast‐ratio and wide‐viewing‐angle LCD mode, refered to as the biased vertical‐alignment (BVA) mode, has been sucessfully developed. Compared to the published data on the PVA and MVA modes, the BVA mode has a distinct advantage of lower manufacturing cost due to the elimination of a lithographic process step that forms either ITO cuts or protrusions on the color‐filter substrates. The BVA mode requires ITO cuts on the TFT substrate similar to that for the PVA and MVA modes. The 15‐in. BVA‐mode XGA prototype exhibits a high contrast ratio of 1200:1 and high cell transmittance of 4.3%.  相似文献

Abstract— This study develops an autostereoscopic display based on a multiple miniature projector array to provide a scalable solution for a high‐resolution 3‐D display with large viewing freedom. To minimize distortion and dispersion, and to maximize the modulation transfer function (MTF) of the projection image to optimize 3‐D image quality, a dedicated projection lens and an accurate six‐axis adjusting platform for the miniature projector were designed and fabricated. Image‐blending technology based on a lookup table was adopted to combine images from 30 miniature projectors into a seamless single image. The result was a 35‐in. autostereoscopic display with 60 views ata 30° viewing angle, 90° FOV, and large range of viewing distance. The proposed system exhibits very smooth motion parallax when viewers move around in front of it.  相似文献

Abstract— A flat‐panel display with a slanted subpixel arrangement has been developed for a multi‐view three‐dimensional (3‐D) display. A set of 3M × N subpixels (M × N subpixels for each R, G, and B color) corresponds to one of the cylindrical lenses, which constitutes a lenticular lens, to construct each 3‐D pixel of a multi‐view display that offers M × N views. Subpixels of the same color in each 3‐D pixel have different horizontal positions, and the R, G, and B subpixels are repeated in the horizontal direction. In addition, the ray‐emitting areas of the subpixels within a 3‐D pixel are continuous in the horizontal direction for each color. One of the vertical edges of each subpixel has the same horizontal position as the opposite vertical edge of another subpixel of the same color. Cross‐talk among viewing zones is theoretically zero. This structure is suitable for providing a large number of views. A liquid‐crystal panel having this slanted subpixel arrangement was fabricated to construct a mobile 3‐D display with 16 views and a 3‐D resolution of 256 × 192. A 3‐D pixel is comprised of 12 × 4 subpixels (M = 4 and N = 4). The screen size was 2.57 in.  相似文献

Abstract— A pixel structure for shutter‐glasses‐type stereoscopic 3‐D active‐matrix organic light‐emitting‐diode (AMOLED) displays is proposed. The proposed pixel programs data to the pixel during the light‐emission time of an OLED. Because the emission time of the proposed pixel is extended, it is expected that the proposed pixel not only decreases the peak current of the OLED during the emission period but also reduces flicker. Moreover, the aperture ratio of the proposed pixel is 58.69% for a 50‐in. full‐high‐definition (FHD) condition by minimizing the number of thin‐film transistors (TFTs), capacitors, and control signal lines as seven TFTs, two capacitors, two power lines, and four control lines per unit pixel. Simulation results show that the error in the emission current of the proposed pixel is from ?0.82% to +0.90% when the threshold‐voltage variation of the driving TFT is ±1.00 V, and the maximum variation of the emission current is ?1.35% when a voltage drop in the power line is ?0.50 V on a full‐white‐image display.  相似文献

Abstract— Stereoscopic 3‐D digital imaging holds the promise of improving the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of disease as well as enhancing the training and preparation of medical professionals through use of stereoscopic 3‐D displays in concert with the many volumetric visualization techniques/modalities developed in recent years. While so‐called 3‐D graphics have improved the state of computer visualization in general, 3‐D displays make full use of the human‐visual perception, and thus can provide critical insight in complex computer‐generated and video 3‐D data. The stereo 3‐D applications reviewed in this paper include screening of breast cancer and diabetic retinopathy, visualization for minimally invasive surgery, and the teaching of anatomy. Also included is a discussion of ground‐breaking results from a stereo digital mammography clinical trial under way at Emory University.  相似文献

Abstract— An attractive concept for 3‐D displays is the one based on LCDs equipped with lenticular lenses. This enables autostereoscopic multiview 3‐D displays without a loss in brightness. A general issue in multiview 3‐D displays is their relatively low spatial resolution because the pixels are divided among the different views. To overcome this problem, we have developed switchable displays, using liquid‐crystal (LC) filled switchable lenticulars. In this way, it is possible to have a high‐brightness 3‐D display capable of fully exploiting the native 2‐D resolution of the underlying LCD. The feasibility of LC‐filled switchable lenticulars was shown in several applications. For applications in which it is advantageous to be able to display 3‐D and 2‐D content simultaneously, a 42‐in. locally switchable prototype having a matrix electrode structure was developed. These displays were realized using cylindrically shaped lenticular lenses in contact with LC. An alternative for these are lenticulars based on gradient‐index (GRIN) LC lenses. Preliminary results for such switchable GRIN lenses are presented as well.  相似文献

Abstract— A new method that can present fine depth increments in a stereoscopic display is proposed. In typical stereoscopic displays, depth can be presented by binocular disparity, but binocular disparity of less than one pixel cannot be displayed because, in general, electronic displays have discrete pixels. We combined binocular disparity and modulation of the edge luminance in DFD (depth‐fused 3D) displays. In an experiment, the perceived depth could be continuously changed by modulating the edge luminance only. Therefore, continuous depth can be produced by combining binocular disparity and modulation of edge luminance distribution.  相似文献

Abstract— Under the European Union funded Advanced Three‐dimensional Television System Technologies (ATTEST) project, De Montfort University (DMU) is developing a 3D display system targeted specifically at domestic television applications. This system uses a modified transmissive LCD panel together with novel backlighting and optics to project multiple viewing regions, or exit pupils, into the viewing space. These exit pupils are located in space using a head tracker. The display accommodates multiple viewers simultaneously and imposes no physical constraints, such as special eyewear. Viewers may move freely over a “typical” room‐sized area. The design of the backlighting facilitates many other display regimes beyond the “standard” 3DTV mode in which each viewer sees the same image pair.  相似文献

Abstract— The De Montfort University (DMU) autostereoscopic 3‐D display, intended for television applications, is described. It provides freedom of viewer movement over a typical “living room” sized area, with no restrictions on viewer's head positions. The display is capable of supplying 3‐D images to multiple viewers who do not need to wear special glasses. It operates by producing regions (exit pupils) in the viewing field where either a left or a right image is perceived. The positions of the exit pupils are steered to the viewers' eyes by the use of head tracking. Design issues that became apparent during the construction of a first prototype, and the findings from tests on it, are described. In addition, the current status of a more advanced prototype is reported.  相似文献

Abstract— The benefits of stereoscopic viewing were explored in searching in words superimposed over a background. In the first experiment, eight participants searched for text in a normal 2‐D display, a 3‐D display using a parallax barrier, and a darkened 2‐D display of equivalent brightness to the 3‐D display. Word‐search performance was significantly faster for the bright 2‐D display vs. the 3‐D display, but when brightness was controlled, performance on the 3‐D display was better relative to the 2‐D (dim) display. In a second experiment, the effect of floating text vs. sinking background disparity was assessed across four background conditions. Twenty participants saw only the floating‐text (FT) condition and 20 participants saw only the sinking‐background (SB) condition. Performance of the SB group was significantly better than that of FT group, and the advantage of SB disparity was greater with the more‐complex backgrounds. Thus, when a parallax‐barrier 3‐D display is used to view text or other figural information overlaid on a background, it is proposed that the layer of primary interest (foreground) should be displayed with zero disparity (on the physical display surface) with the secondary layer (background) appearing to be sunk beneath that surface.  相似文献

Abstract— Research described in this paper encompasses the design and building of glasses‐free (autostereoscopic) displays that utilize a direct‐view liquid‐crystal display whose backlight is provided by a projector and novel steering optics. This is controlled by the output of a multi‐user head‐position tracker. As the displays employ spatial multiplexing on a liquid‐crystal‐display screen, they are inherently 2‐D/3‐D switchable with 2‐D being achieved by simply displaying the same image in the left and right channels. Two prototypes are described in this paper; one incorporating a holographic projector and the other a conventional LCOS projector. The LCOS projector version addresses the limitations of brightness, cross‐talk, banding in the images, and laser stability that occur in the holographic projector version. The future development is considered and a comparison between the prototypes and with other 3‐D displays is given.  相似文献
