The relationship between pose and illumination learning in face recognition was examined in a yes–no recognition paradigm. The authors assessed whether pose training can transfer to a new illumination or vice versa. Results show that an extensive level of pose training through a face–name association task was able to generalize to a new illumination (Experiments 1 and 3), but an equal level of illumination training failed to generalize to a new pose (Experiment 2). The transfer of pose training was likely to depend on a relatively extensive level of training because the same faces with reduced level of exposure (Experiment 4) were unable to reproduce the transfer effect. The findings suggest that generalization of pose training may be extended to different types of image variation, whereas generalization of illumination training may be confined within the trained type of variation. To evaluate the effect of variation in illumination on Ortho-Rater scores, acuity measurements were collected from 55 college students. Illumination was varied from 10 to 125% of standard. Near and far acuity scores, for both eyes and for the right eye, were tabulated. Decreases in illumination as great as one-fourth of standard, or increases as great as one-fourth of standard, did not affect visual acuity scores. We explored the relation between individual differences in working memory (WM) and color constancy, the phenomenon of color perception that allows us to perceive the color of an object as relatively stable under changes in illumination. Successive color constancy (measured by first viewing a colored surface under a particular illumination and later recalling it under a new illumination) was better for higher WM individuals than for lower WM individuals. Moreover, the magnitude of this WM difference depended on how much contextual information was available in the scene, which typically improves color constancy. By contrast, simple color memory, measured by viewing and recalling a colored surface under the same illumination, showed no significant relation to WM. This study reveals a relation between WM and a low-level perceptual process not previously thought to operate within the confines of attentional control, and it provides a first account of the individual differences in color constancy known about for decades. "A new set of digits designed to make maximum use of easily discriminated forms was studied. Data on confusion errors are given. The legibility of the new digits is not independent of whether they are presented as black ground. At low illumination levels white on black is more legible, the reverse being true at high illumination levels.
